Opis:
The common problems of learners that contribute to absenteeism in school include malaria, cough/catarrh, typhoid, headache and stomach ache. This led to the formulation of national school health policy in Nigeria to promote health services in schools. In view of the foregoing, this study assesses principals’ perception of health services in secondary schools. The study population consists of 551 principals of secondary schools (public and private) in Kwara State, Nigeria. Purposive and convenience sampling techniques were employed to select 20 principals. Instrument tagged “Interview Protocol on Health Services (IPHS)” was used to elicit data from the participants. Data collected was transcribed and analysed via thematic approach. Findings revealed that majority of the schools does not have school clinic to dispense health services to learners. Our fidings also show that most of the schools lack health personnel and equipment. This study concludes that comprehensive health services were not provided for learners. The study recommends that the government should come up with policy statement on school health services that will help to provide quality health services to the learners. Adequate budget should be made by the government for the implementation of the policy. Lastly, the study provides practical and methodological contributions to the body of knowledge in the fild of education.

Health promotion requires intervention in social systems and encouraging them to develop a healthy environment. School is one of the important social systems contributing to health promotion. “The health promoting school” (HPS) programme was established in the 1980s while looking for ways of putting the health promotion concept into practice. The milestones in developing this programme were: the pilot project “The Health Promoting School” (1992–1995), establishing the European Network of Health Promoting Schools (1992) (transformed into Schools for Health in Europe in 2008) and four European conferences organized within the framework of these networks (1997, 2002, 2009, 2013). This article presents a discussion of the four resolutions which were the final documents of these conferences. They described the basic principles of HPS and the aims and directions of activities for further programme development. The documents are addressed to the people who create the educational and health policy, teachers and researchers in European countries who should support the development of HPSs – recognized as an investment in health, education and democracy.

Elaboration of the concept of inclusive education demands the continu ation of the research in order to clarify its effectiveness under various conditions and with different contingent. The research objective was to compare the effect of segregative and integrative physical education classes (PE) upon physical development indicators in the apparently healthy middle secondary school age students and the students with minor health problems. Two separate groups of schoolchildren (N=1417, aged 10 -15) underwent a medical examination. One group of students attended segregative phys ical education classes, for the other group physical education classes were conducted integratively according to the students’ health status. The ratio of the total number of physical development significant growth rates in the sets of segregative and int egrative mode of PE classes indicates a slightly higher efficiency of integrated PE classes as compared to segregative ones, which was confirmed statistically.

Opis:
Wstęp Przedstawiono wybrane wyniki ewaluacji 3-letniego projektu „Promocja zdrowia pracowników szkół promujących zdrowie” oraz osiągnięcia i trudności w jego wdrażaniu. Materiał i metody W 21 szkołach zbadano 644 nauczycieli i 226 pracowników niepedagogicznych. Opracowano 2-częściowy model ewaluacji wyników. Zastosowano metodę sondażu i autorskie kwestionariusze ankiet. Background This article presents selected outcomes of a 3-year project “Health promotion of school staff in health-promoting schools,” as well as the achievements and difficulties in its implementation. Material and Methods The research was conducted on 644 teachers and 226 members of non-teaching staff in 21 schools. The method involved opinion poll and authored questionnaires. A 2-part model of outcome evaluation was developed. Results Most participants appreciated the changes that took place within the 3 years of the project implementation. These included the improved level of their knowledge about health, health-conducive behaviors (62–93%) and the physical and social environment of the school (50–92%). Changes were more frequently acknowledged by teachers. About 80% of the participants had a positive attitude to the project, but only 20% assessed their involvement as considerable. About 90% believed that health promotion activities should be continued. According to the project leaders, insufficient support and financial resources, and difficulties in motivating school employees, particularly the nonteaching staff, to undertake health-promotion activities were the major handicaps in the project implementation. Conclusions The project outcomes can be assessed as satisfying. They revealed that it is posssible to initiate health promotion among school staff. This can be effective on condition that participants are motivated, actively engaged in the project and supported by the head teacher and the local community. Necessarily, school leaders should be prepared to promote health among adults and to gain support from school policy decision makers, school administration, trade unions and universities involved in teacher training. The quantitative research, the partial results described in this article, was carried out as part of the COVID-HL network (covid-hl.eu). They aimed to determine to what extent health promotion and safety measures were taken in Polish schools during the COVID-19 pandemic for members of school communities. A survey method was used to conduct the research, which included an online distributed questionnaire. The research sample consisted of principals and deputy principals of schools located in eight provinces (N = 803). The research showed that school principals were highly involved in implementing health promotion activities and were, at the same time, severely burdened with tasks related to ensuring the safety of all school community representatives and maintaining proper organisation of school work during the pandemic.

Faculty of Natural and Technical Sciences and Faculty of Medical Sciences starting from December 2012, launched joint study in order to investigate personal noise exposure and associated health effects in general school teachers population, starting from kindergartens up to high schools in Stip, Macedonia. In order to determine workplace associated noise exposure and associated health effects in this specific profession, a full shift noise exposure of 40 teachers from 1 kindergarten, 2 primary and 2 high schools were measured in real conditions using noise dosimeters. A-weighted equivalent-continuous sound pressure levels (L) of each teacher were recorded during single activities (classes). Normalized 8-hours exposure, termed the noise exposure level (Lex;8 h) was also computed. Daily noise dose is another descriptor for noise exposure that was determined as a measure of the total sound energy to which workers have been exposed, as a result of working in the varying noise levels. Health effects were assessed trough a full scale epidemiological study which included 231 teachers from the same schools. Specific questionnaire was used to extract information about subject’s perception on occupational noise exposure, as well as theirs occupational and medical history.

Recent studies suggest that students fail to meet the international guidelines for physical activity. Therefore, an increased number of physical activity interventions attempt to change this trend. The current paper reviews the intervention studies which were based on the Self-Determination Theory (SDT). Three databases (PsycINFO, Medline, and SPORTDiscus) were scrutinized in the current review, which yielded 437 potential articles. Employing the recommended selection based on the population, intervention, comparators, and outcome (PICO), 14 articles could be included in the narrative analysis. The results showed that interventions based on the SDT were very heterogeneously operationalized in these studies. Despite different interventions, the results suggest that SDT-based interventions have the potential to increase students' physical activity through both, autonomy and supportive environment. Teachers' professional development in implementing SDT-based physical activity interventions for students is highly recommended.
