Opis:
Since 1991, the Foundation for Cardiac Surgery Development in Zabrze has been implementing research on the artificial heart. In 1995, an artificial ventricle, POLVAD, was implanted to a patient, and in 1998, the prototype of a clinical controller, POLPDU-401, was created. A further development of the studies on an implantable artificial heart requires an integrated approach and an application of advanced methods of materials sciences in order to develop new materials suitable for the contact with blood, as well as to apply a multilateral biomedical diagnostics in hydrodynamic conditions. The estimation of the cell–material interaction plays an important role in the biomaterial design. An analysis of the influence of the carbon content in titanium nitride on the biological and biophysical properties of biomaterial coatings was studied. The cell-material reactions were considered in dynamic and static conditions. Three groups of materials were under examinations – titanium nitride (TiN), as well as titanium carbonitride with a low and high carbon content – of which the best properties were observed for TiN. We found a strong influence of the stoichiometry of TiN (atomic ratio of Ti/N) on the biocompatibility. A non-stoichiometric TiN could have a negative influence on the surrounding tissue.

Hydroxyapatite layers were deposited on Ti6Al4V substrates with TiN buffer layers by use of pulsed laser deposition method. With this technique two pressed pellets consisted of hydroxyapatite [formula] and hydroxyapatite doped with magnesium [formula] were ablated using ArF excimer laser (lambda=193 nm). The use of different targets enabled to determine the influence of target composition on the nature of deposited layers. The obtained deposits were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction method (XRD). The analysis from XRD showed that Mg-doped HA layer had crystalline structure and composition of layer deposited from pure HA material is characterized by amorphous nature.

Opis:
The aim of the work was to obtain thin bismuth oxide films containing, at room temperature, the Bi1,5Er0,5O3 phase. This phase corresponds to the structure of the high-temperature δ-Bi2O3 phase, in pure bismuth oxide, characterized by the highest ionic conductivity of all known solid state ionic conductors. The high-temperature δ-Bi2O3 phase with the face centered cubic structure, in pure bismuth oxide, occurs only at temperature above 730°C. Stabilization of the δ-Bi2O3 phase at room temperature was achieved by an addition of the erbium together with the employ-ment of the Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique. The influence of an amount of Er alloying and the film thickness on surface morphology, microstructure, phase composition of thin films were investigated. The velocity of deposition of thin layers of bismuth stabilized with erbium in the PLD process using the Nd: YAG laser was about 0.5 nm/s.The investigation results of erbium doped bismuth oxide thin films deposited onto (0001) oriented Al2O3 monocrystalline substrate are presented. Thin films of uniform thickness, without cracks, and porosity were obtained. All deposited thin films (regardless of the film thickness or erbia (Er2O3) content) exhibited a columnar structure. In films stabilized with erbium, up to approx. 250 nm thickness, the columns have a diameter at the base from 25 to 75 nm. The columns densely and tightly fill the entire volume of the films. With increasing of the film thickness increases, porosity also significantly increases. In thin layers containing from 20 to 30 mole % Er2O3 the main identified phase at room temperature is Bi1,5Er0,5O3. It is similar to the defective fluorite-type structure, and belongs to the Fm-3m space group. This phase corresponds to the structure of the high-temperature δ-Bi2O3 phase in pure bismuth oxide.

Opis:
Functionalization of surfaces is an important task for nanotechnology to add specially designed physico-chemical properties to materials. Besides chemical modification of surfaces, physical adaptations gain increasing interest. Thus, understanding the influences of film deposition on surface topography formation is the basis for future developments. For physical or chemical vapour deposited (PVD, CVD) films, structure zone models were developed, clearly showing the influences of temperature and vapour energy and, thus, surface and bulk diffusion on film structures based on four different structure zones. Generally, similar zones are also found in PVD coatings on polymeric substrates; However, due to restrictions in coating temperatures due to the thermal resistance of most polymers, the coating temperature is restricted to mostly 50°C, excluding thermal activation of at least surface diffusion of inorganic materials (metals and their nitrides, oxides, carbides, etc.) and resulting in columnar growth with dome-shaped column tops. Additionally, the high difference in mechanical properties between “stiff” inorganic coatings and “flexible” polymers implicates stress-induced growth phenomena, resulting in wrinkling, cracking and finally the formation of a superseding structure, depending on substrate and film materials and the vapour energy of the deposition method.

Opis:
The article presents preliminary results of investigation on structure, morphology and mechanical properties of boron nitride thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition on various steel substrates. In order to improve adhesion and reduce internal stresses, substrates were subjected to gas nitriding. To increase gas ionization in the chamber and provide the deposited particles with higher energy RF discharge generator was used. Structure and morphology of coatings were examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Mechanical properties like nanohardness (sclerometric) and elastic modulus (using approach curves) were characterized by UNMT. Adhesion of coatings was measured by scratch tests; critical load was determined on the basis of microscopic observation and friction force and acoustic emission runs. On the basis of obtained results, possibility of using steel as substrate for BN thin films deposition was confirmed. Stable, crystalline, multiphase coatings with good adhesion to the steel substrate were obtained. It was also proved that mechanical properties of prepared coatings and their adhesion to the substrates strongly depend on the type of the substrate. In the next stage tribological properties of BN, coatings will be examined in particular in terms of wear resistance and friction coefficient between coatings and steel.

Seeding of cells on functional, biocompatible scaffolds is a crucial step in achievement the desired engineered tissue. In the present study, a pulsed laser modification onto inorganic substrate was made to promote endothelium cells migration and spread. Presented scaffolds were fabricated on carbon and titanium based coatings. Fabricated films provided very good mechanical properties together with a chemical stability preservation. The substrate modification consisted of grid-like template fabrication of micrometer size meshes. The microstructure analysis of laser traces revealed the grain size increase in the zone of laser beam interaction, which exerts an influence on a surface topography. Endothelium cells locomotion was observed within 10 day time period. As a result it was shown that the modified area enhanced cells adhesion with a preferred static behavior. The performed research work improved our understanding on the pulsed laser ablation process and template size influence on cells spatial arrangement. It constituted an important step towards fabrication of inorganic, biocompatible scaffolds for successful substrate endothelialization.

The availability of reliable modeling tools and input data required for the prediction of surface removal rate from the lithium fluoridetargets irradiated by the intense photon beams is essential for many practical aspects. This study is motivated by the practical implementation of soft X-ray (SXR) or extreme ultraviolet (XUV) lasers for the pulsed ablation and thin fi lm deposition. Specifically, it is focused on quantitative description of XUV laser-induced desorption/ablation from lithium fluoride, which is a reference large band-gap dielectric material with ionic crystalline structure. Computational framework was proposed and employed here for the reconstruction of plume expansion dynamics induced by the irradiation of lithium fluoridetargets. The morphology of experimentally observed desorption/ablation craters were reproduced using idealized representation (two-zone approximation) of the laser fluence profile. The calculation of desorption/ablation rate was performed using one-dimensional thermomechanic model (XUV-ABLATOR code) taking into account laser heating and surface evaporation of the lithium fluoridetarget occurring on a nanosecond timescale. This step was followed by the application of two-dimensional hydrodynamic solver for description of laser-produced plasma plume expansion dynamics. The work consisted in functionalizing gold nanoparticles to analytically detect heavy metals in contaminated water; in Tayacaja-Huancavelica-Peru, using physical method of laser ablation. The 450 mJ/p Nd:YAG was used as a pulsed laser generator for the production of colloids from AuNPs by the top-down approach; the target was a 1 cm x 1.5 cm high purity gold metallic plate with a thickness of 1 mm, inside a 20 ml cuvette of deionized water, containing 5 ml of L-Cysteine ≥ 75% purity. Nanoparticle colloids were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy from 200 to 1160 nm range. Using a convex lens, the gold metal plate was ablated by the laser equipment, located 10 cm from the focus; with λ = 1064 nm and λ = 532 nm with energy equivalent to 60.28 mJ/p and 32.99 mJ/p respectively, with a ratio of 2 Hz, for 30 and 60 min. All the samples produced were subjected to the dispersion process by sonication at 40 KHz for one hour. The functionalized nanoparticles presented a resonance displacement of the maximum wavelength peak with respect to the reference at approximately 22.51 nm; consequently, the increase in diameter occurred at 52.10 nm. The sensitive capacity of the functionalized nanoparticles was verified for different concentrations of analytes in water, made up of divalent heavy metal ions Cd2+, Pb2+, and trivalent nonmetal As3+. At a concentration greater than 500 uM, the color of the functionalized nanoparticles turned bluish, due to the presence of positive ions. Therefore, it was stated that the functionalized nanoparticles enable the detection of heavy metals in water by color variation.

In vestigation of influence of TiN thin film morphology on deformation inhomogeneities is an overall subject of the research. Numerical modelling approach that was selected for the study is based on the digital material representation concept, which gives an opportunity to directly replicate columnar microstructure morphology of an investigated thin film. Particular attention in this paper is put on the discussion of the influence of cellular automata neighbourhood on thin-film digital morphologies and their further deformation behaviour. Additionally, an evaluation of representativeness aspects of the digital models, in particular, the analysis of the influence of a number of columns, their dimensions and variations in their properties on the material behaviour during compression tests is also presented. The non-periodic boundary conditions are assumed during the investigation. Obtained data in the form of equivalent stress distributions as well as homogenized stress-strain curves from analyzed case studies are presented and discussed within the paper.

Purpose With the ever-growing demand for conventional fuels, the improvement in the efficiency of the photovoltaic system is the need of the hour. Antireflection coatings enhance the availability of solar power by reducing the percentage of light reflected. A new coating has been developed to improve the solar cell's overall efficiency. This study focuses on enhancing the efficiency of the monocrystalline solar cell when a coating of ZnO-MoO3 is applied at a certain thickness. Design/methodology/approach A layer of ZnO followed by MoO3 is deposited on a Silicon solar cell substrate using a Pulsed Laser Deposition process. Due to the transmissivity d between the two materials, they act as excellent antireflection coating. The layer thickness has been engineered to lie in the maximum absorption spectrum of monocrystalline silicon solar cells, which is between 400 and 800 nanometers. Findings Based on the calculation of transmissivities for a given layer thickness of coating material, the coating has been done, and the efficiencies of the coated specimen were compared with the uncoated solar cell. The percentage improvement in the electrical efficiency of a single crystalline silicon solar cell with an anti-reflection coating at 1059 W/m2 is about 35.7%. Research limitations/implications Among the available antireflection coating materials, the combination that provides better efficiency when coated on top of a solar cell is hard to find. Practical implications This anti-reflection coating could be a better solution to enhance the overall efficiency of the single crystalline silicon solar cell. Originality/value Although ZnO and MoO3 coatings have been investigated separately for improvement in solar cell efficiency with varying levels of success, the hybrid coating of ZnO/MoO3 with a performance enhancement of 35.7% is a great leap.

Opis:
In this study, an attempt was made to investigate the antimicrobial activity on polypropylene (PP) hydroentangled nonwoven fabrics coated with transition metal oxides. After etching the nonwoven fabrics with RF plasma, nano-scale coatings of ZnO and CuO were done using the KrF excimer based pulsed laser deposition technique (PLD). Morphological and antimicrobial studies were carried out to elucidate the mechanism of antibiocidal behaviour of the coated fabrics. Results showed significant antibacterial activity of ZnO and CuO coated PP hydroentangled nonwovens with a better activity against gram positive S.aureus than gram negative E.coli. Inherently non-toxic, PP has excellent chemical resistance and the use of specialised PP fibres for hydroentangled nonwovens could offer scope in addition to metal oxide coatings; nano-scale biological materials such as enzymes and drugs could add specific functionality for their use as medical textiles.
W pracy podjęto próbę zbadania aktywności przeciwdrobnoustrojowej polipropylenowych włóknin pokrytych tlenkami metali. Przeprowadzono badania morfologiczne i przeciw- drobnoustrojowe powlekanych włóknin. Wyniki wykazały znaczną aktywność antybakteryjną włóknin pokrytych ZnO i CuO, przy czym wyższą aktywność antybakteryjną zaobserwowano wobec bakterii Gram-dodatnich (Staphylococcus ureus), niż wobec Gram-ujemnych (Escherichia coli).

This paper presents an investigation into effect of nitrogen content of shielding gas mixture on weld geometry, microstructure and hardness of pulsed laser welded 2205 duplex stainless steel. Full penetration autogenous welding was performed on 2 mm thick plates using a low power pulsed Nd: YAG laser. light and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the resulting microstructures. It is observed that 2 mm full penetrated joint decreases to 1.8 mm by dominating nitrogen in argon-nitrogen mixture. Different morphologies of austenite phase as well as an increase of 8% of its content can be observed in pure nitrogen shielded welds. Average weld grain size in sample which is welded in nitrogen atmosphere stands at approximately 41 μm which is smallerthan that of argon atmosphere which is about 51 μm. Micro-hardness test reveals that hardness values increase from 280 HV in base metal to 307 HV in weld center line and the shielding gas mixture does not significantly influence the weld hardness.
