The article concerns the analysis of contemporary codes of ethics in social work from two perspectives. The first is the axiological justification and embedding a code in a specific concept of general ethics. In the second, pragmatic part, the code appears as a set of moral principles that represent the fundamental values of this profession. The article is not a holistic attempt to gather the arguments of supporters and opponents of the creation of codes. Nor is it an attempt to defend or undermine the sense of the existence of modern codes. The article is only a reflection on their condition, form and main assumptions.

The paper attempts to analyse the ethical duties of engineers contained in selected engineering codes of ethics and indicates a few problems arising in teaching professional engineering ethics in technical studies. The codes of ethics under analysis, both Polish and foreign (American), show similarities and differences. The author indicates the likely causes of these similarities and differences and suggests the need for further research on the development of ethical standards as well as their implementation, application and enforcement. The author discusses teaching ethics based on his own experience and compares a few American textbooks used for engineering ethics teaching. The author indicates a lack of necessary teaching materials in Polish and the existence of no Polish forum for discussing ethical problems of engineering in Poland both in the areas of teaching and research.

Katarzyna Sikora’s question about the nature of ethical good that underlies the codes of psychologists’ professional ethics is justified. It leads to reflection on the nature of good, which, however, does not preoccupy the authors or users of ethics codes very much. What they focus on is mainly practical regulations concerning various kinds of professional conduct, which experience proves to be indispensable for keeping practitioners of the profession within the bounds of its ethos as well as within the standards of its knowledge and skills. The good that the recipient of psychological services should enjoy and the psychologist should strive to provide remains vague. This is visible in comparison with other professions rich in axiological content, such as medical or legal professions. Good in the form of health or enjoying one’s rights in society, which determines the axiological content in those professions, is elusive in the case of the psychologist. This axiological content in turn determines and constitutes the basis for the ethics of medical and legal professions, respectively. Psychologists have no such basis, or, at any rate, such a basis has not been clearly and distinctly identified for them. Personal integrity is proposed as the kind of good that psychologists should seek to provide the recipients of their services with when practicing their profession.

Społeczeństwo oczekuje od socjologów, by posiadali wysokie kwalifikacje zawodowe, stale doskonalili własne umiejętności i podnosili poziom fachowej wiedzy, a także zachowywali wysokie standardy etyczne. Jedynie solidne badania realizowane przez uczciwych socjologów będą zasługiwały na uznanie, a jeśli ich opinie będą bezstronne, zostaną przez społeczeństwo przyjęte i pozytywnie ocenione.
The code of professional ethics for sociologists attempts to define moral standards of sociologists’ professional activity, derived from general ethics being particularized. Professional ethics in sociology, through reference to specific model situations, gives the grounds for establishing rules of sociologists professional functioning. It indicates how a sociologist should and should not act. Observing moral standards is an expression of care not only for sociologists’ common good, but also for the society’s common good, as the society is examined by sociologists, and uses and benefits from the research results. The society expects that sociologists will be highly qualified, will perfect their skills and improve their expertise as well as keep high ethical standards. Only solid research conducted by reliable sociologists deserves to be acknowledged, and if sociologists' opinions are unbiased, they will be accepted and positively appraised.

Professional ethics is a set of rules and norms determining how – from a moral point of view – representatives of a particular profession should behave. Codes of ethics are a tool for developing ethical principles and values adapted to specific professional groups, including professional accountants. For several years, there has been the Code of Professional Ethics in Accounting (CPEA) to be followed, adopted by the Association of Accountants in Poland. According to the Code, the basic principles for accounting professionals include honesty, objectivity, professional competence and due diligence, maintaining the confidentiality of information, and professional attitude. The research problem is an attempt to answer the question: Do the individual ethical principles and ethical values of students coincide with the ethical principles of the professional community of accountants that CPEA presents? The aim of the article is to identify moral and potential unethical behaviors among accounting students in the context of the ethical principles of CPEA. To achieve the goal of the article, an empirical study was carried out. The pilot study using the PAPI technique was used in the research process. The quantitative methods were used in the development of the survey results. As results from the research, students pointed to general, well‑known ethical values. However, the students’ individual behavior is not always consistent with what is considered to be appropriate and ethical according to the standards of the professional environment. It is clearly visible that the students are guided by their own ethical principles, even if they violate the law, make choices to behave following their own interest. The obtained research results reveal the tendency of many respondents towards various kinds of unethical activities that threaten the implementation of general ethics in accounting, both among people who intend to work and those who declare their participation in internships in accounting professions.
Etyka zawodowa to zbiór zasad i norm określających, w jaki sposób, z moralnego punktu widzenia, powinni zachowywać się przedstawiciele określonego zawodu. Kodeksy etyki stanowią narzędzie rozwinięcia zasad i wartości etycznych zaadaptowanych do konkretnych grup zawodowych, w tym zawodowych księgowych. Od kilku lat istnieje Kodeks zawodowej etyki w rachunkowości (KZEwR), przyjęty przez Stowarzyszenie Księgowych w Polsce. Według niego do podstawowych pryncypiów osób zajmujących się rachunkowością zalicza się uczciwość, obiektywizm, zawodowe kompetencje i należytą staranność, zachowanie tajemnicy informacji, profesjonalną postawę. Problemem badawczym jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie: „Czy indywidualne zasady i wartości etyczne studentów są zbieżne z zasadami etycznymi wspólnoty zawodowej księgowych, które przedstawia KZEwR?”. Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja moralnych i potencjalnie nieetycznych zachowań wśród studentów rachunkowości w kontekście zasad etycznych KZEwR. Dla osiągnięcia celu publikacji przeprowadzono badanie empiryczne. W procesie badawczym posłużono się badaniem pilotażowym z wykorzystaniem techniki PAPI. W opracowaniu wyników badań ankietowych wykorzystano metody ilościowe. Jak wynika z analiz, studenci wskazali na ogólne, powszechnie znane wartości etyczne. Jednak nie zawsze indywidualne zachowania studentów są zgodne z tym, co uważa się za właściwe i etyczne według standardów środowiska zawodowego księgowych. Wyraźnie daje się zauważyć, że studenci kierują się własnymi zasadami etycznymi, nawet jeśli naruszają prawo, podejmują wybory przez pryzmat osobistego interesu. Decydujące znaczenie w ich postępowaniu odgrywają czynniki endogeniczne. Uzyskane wyniki badań ujawniają skłonność części ankietowanych do różnego rodzaju działań nieetycznych, zagrażających realizacji ogólnych zasad etyki w rachunkowości, zarówno wśród osób zamierzających pracować, jak i deklarujących staż w zawodach księgowych.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wybranych aspektów etycznych psychoterapii. W chwili obecnej w Polsce nie istnieją ustawowe regulacje wykonywania zawodu psychoterapeuty, a zasady obowiązujące w psychoterapii wynikają z innych ustaw oraz kodeksów etycznych poszczególnych towarzystw psychoterapeutycznych. Mimo pewnych różnic wynikających z założeń konkretnych szkół terapeutycznych wśród psychoterapeutów panuje zgoda co do podstawowych założeń etycznych psychoterapii. Obejmują one troskę terapeuty o dobro klienta, poszanowanie jego podmiotowości i autonomii, obowiązek stałego doskonalenia zawodowego psychoterapeuty oraz przestrzeganie zasady poufności. Artykuł poświęcono wymienionym zagadnieniom, należy jednak podkreślić, że nie wyczerpuje on poruszanego tematu, a jedynie sygnalizuje pewne jego aspekty, na podstawie aktualnych przepisów regulujących pracę psychologów oraz wybrane opracowania.
The aim of the article is to present the chosen ethical aspects of psychotherapy. In the present moment in Poland there are no statutory regulations regarding the profession of psychotherapists, and the rules present in psychotherapy result from other regulations and ethical codes of certain psychotherapy associations. Despite several differences resulting from the assumptions of given psychotherapy schools, among psychotherapists there is a consensus regarding basic ethical rules in psychotherapy. They consider a care of clients’ wellbeing, respect of their subjectivity and autonomy, an obligation of an ongoing professional development of psychotherapists and keeping of professional secrecy. The article is devoted to the above issues, it should be noted, however, that it does not fully elaborate on a given topic, it merely signals some of its aspects basing on the current regulations which refer to psychologists practice and chosen essays.

Representatives of business ethics examine the economic challenges of our time. They believe that in the use of ethics they are able to keep under control this sphere of human activity. Alas, this attempt meets the following obstacle. This ethical claim does not work as an objective criterion for measuring good vs evil as long as it is not supported by epistemological evidence (on its validity). Therefore business ethicists focus their attention on the codes of ethics which they see as the expected solution to the problem. A code of ethics is drawn up by an economic organisation which – in this way – declares its acceptance. Meanwhile, this declaration leads to the question of how to sift the ethical guarantees from empty promises? Can the social addressee of an ethical code trust its author? This doubt relates in particular to professional associations. Having a legal prerogative they are expected to recognize their fiduciary duty of loyalty to their social interlocutor. When they do not want to meet these obligations, they may use a code of ethics as a tool of manipulation. Under those circumstances, the code is something opposite to what is expected.

The definition of social work is relatively young but at the same time it is of the most progressively developing professions nowadays. The aim of the article is the analysis, the comparison and the description of global trends and national standards of ethics in social work practice. Ethics is presented as an integral part of social work - as a profession and an academic discipline. Codes of ethics are important tools for sensitising people who perform and study social work, although these do not replace their own, internally motivated sense of responsibility. This article discusses not only the current International Code of Ethics and the Slovak Code of Ethics for Social Worker and Social Work Assistant but also it demonstrates the diachronic aspect with regards to changes in the last two decades in the international and national understanding of the profession and ethics of social work.

The point of departure for the remarks made in my text is Katarzyna Sikorska’s paper, opening a debate on ethical issues involved in the profession of psychologist. The paper itself is, in my opinion, a solid presentation of these issues as they appear in international and Polish codes. Against this backdrop, my remarks concern the situation in Poland. They describe this situation as advanced disintegration of the community of Polish psychologists caused by the weakness of Polish Psychological Association (PTP) and by the failure to take into account the cultural rootedness of most treatments used in psychologists’ work. The latter remark refers to the failure to take into account both the cultural identity of clients and the cultural rootedness of products imported into the country.

Mid-sized countries face a changing security environment, and cannot be certain that the knowledge and practices of the past will serve the future. The officers, professors, and researchers in defence universities are the custodians of military sciences that must adapt to these changing situations. Practitioner research should be modelled and encouraged in defence universities as a vehicle for advancing military sciences to meet new challenges. Previous practitioner research in higher and adult education has highlighted the need for experiential learning in other professions. The authors report on practitioner research by professors at pre-commission military academies to improve cadets’ understanding of peace and conflict. Military and police education is often experience-based, but there are few reports of practitioner research on its effectiveness, nor of combining peace and conflict education with out-of-classroom experiences. Legitimation Code Theory provides tools for understanding different teaching approaches. Comparing four cases of practitioner research on experiential learning the authors present models for practitioner research on teaching peace and conflict through out-of-classroom experiences, and conclude with means of evaluating learning experiences by pre-commission cadets, drawing on legitimation code theory. This is increasingly important for military academies striving to meet academic standards, but also to preserve professional values and young officer motivation to confront new challenges.

The need to establish the Code of Ethics of a Laboratory Diagnostician stems from the development of medicine in which the specialized laboratory diagnostics has been playing an increasingly important role. Not only does it help determine accurate diagnostics which enables effective therapy, but also contributes to the development of wider health service and preventive medicine. It is thus understandable that with the service providers and patients becoming increasingly aware of the importance of laboratory diagnostics, it has gained the status of the profession of public trust. In practice, it means that laboratory diagnosticians set themselves high moral and professional standards, The Code of Ethics of a Laboratory Diagnostician, the signatories of which are individual laboratory diagnosticians through their representatives who attended the Extraordinary National Meeting of Laboratory Diagnosticians on January 13, 2006, will be very important in education of specialists, the Code expresses the moral awareness of the laboratory diagnostics community, and also provides the basis for assessment of professional involvement and moral stance of the members of the Corporation. The Code of Ethics of a Laboratory Diagnostician is grounded in generally accepted ethical standards as well as the principles originating from the professional tradition, the principal standard of conduct of a laboratory diagnostician involves consideration of the welfare of a human being, which should be protected both in the individual and social context, this principle provides for the obligation to respect human dignity and establishes reference for professional practice so that its primary objective would cover service to a patient in accordance with commonly respected values such as honesty, reliability and competency.

Professional ethics of teachers is one of the most important areas of interest of pedeutology. Not only traditions of that profession, but also the contemporary challenges facing it seem to be indicative of it. In the considerations presented, professional ethics of teachers is shown from two perspectives, i.e. the universal and the pluralistic ones. Each of these perspectives is characterized by diverse understanding of professional ethics of teachers and, in particular, its nature. Generally speaking, the first of these perspectives can come down to the establishment of professional ethics of teachers in the form of a code, while the other moves away from such a strictly code-orientated perception of ethics. Certainly, this does not mean a rejection of any ethical stipulations characteristic of teacher circles, but rather adopting a position according to which such exclusive and only correct stipulations do not exist, but there are a lot of them, which one should bear in mind characterizing the ethical aspects of the teaching profession.

The Code of Conduct for European Lawyers, adopted by the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), purports to be adopted as enforceable rules in relation to the cross-border activities of the lawyers. The object of this article is to examine whether the Code is a binding act for attorneys at law and attorneys. The professional self-governments have recognised the Code as a binding act for their members, but the analysis leads to the conclusion that there is no basis for this in Polish law. Furthermore, the Code is not an internal act within the meaning of Article 93 of the Polish Constitution. This means that neither attorneys at law nor attorneys can be held disciplinarily liable for breaches of the Code. In order to ensure the effectiveness of the provisions of the Code, they should be included in the professional codes of ethics of these professional self-governments.
Kodeks Etyki Prawników Europejskich, przyjęty przez Radę Adwokatur i Stowarzyszeń Prawniczych Europy, zakłada związanie nim prawników prowadzących działalność transgraniczną. Przedmiotem artykułu jest zbadanie tego, czy Kodeks jest aktem wiążącym radców prawnych i adwokatów. Samorządy zawodowe tych prawników uznały Kodeks za akt wiążący ich członków, jednak analiza prowadzi do wniosku, że w polskim prawie nie ma do tego podstaw. Co więcej, Kodeks nie jest aktem wewnętrznym w rozumieniu art. 93 Konstytucji RP. Oznacza to, że radcowie prawni ani adwokaci nie mogą odpowiadać dyscyplinarnie za naruszenie Kodeksu. Aby zapewnić skuteczność przepisom tego aktu, powinny one zostać uwzględnione w kodeksach etyki zawodowej wskazanych samorządów.

In the discussion on my article, a number of important issues have been raised. Despite the variety of opinions, the participants in the discussion were unanimous about the fact that although defining client welfare is essential for professional ethics, it is more important to build a sense of professional identity and to make efforts to obtain accurate knowledge of the nature of the client as a person. Implementing ethical standards into the relationships between psychologists, namely between researchers and practicing professionals, seems to be an extremely important issue. In my response I try to indicate the possible directions of further reflection in this area.

Opis:
The Code of Ethics for Veterinary Surgeons (the Code), as a legal act of the selfgovernment within the profession in which the public repose confidence, should not go beyond the limits set by Article 17 of the Polish Constitution. Under this provision, the self-governments in professions of public confidence are to represent the practitioners and concern themselves with the proper practice of those professions in accordance with, and for the purpose of protecting, the public interest. Moreover, since the Code is a normative regulation of internal nature, it should be drawn up in line with the principles of legislative drafting and may not infringe the acts of universally binding law. The aim of this paper is to find out whether the Code conforms to the above assumptions. Special attention is drawn to the relations between the Code and the practice of the veterinary profession. The compliance of the Code with the Polish Constitution and other legal issues relating to the Code are also discussed. The paper concludes with proposed amendments that should be introduced to the Code.
