Opis:
Recently, algae have become significant organisms for biological purification of wastewater since they are able to accumulate plant nutrients, heavy metals, pesticides, organic and inorganic toxic substances and radioactive matters in their cells/bodies. Biological wastewater treatment systems with micro algae have particularly gained importance in last 50 years and it is now widely accepted that algal wastewater treatment systems are as effective as conventional treatment systems. These specific features have made algal wastewaters treatment systems an significant low-cost alternatives to complex expensive treatment systems particularly for purification of municipal wastewaters. By this method 70 % of biological oxygen demand, 66 % of chemical oxygen demand, 71 % total nitrogen, 67 % of phosphorus, 54 % volatile solid and 51 % of dissolved solid was reduced.

The facility operators, in accordance with Regulation of the European Parliament and the Council of 18 January 2006, No. 166/2006 concerning the establishment of a European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register, are required to deliver an annual E-PRTR report. Currently industrial plants use for this purpose literature available factors for a given pollutant released into the air. For most pollutants from the PRTR list, there is no emission factors based on European data. In order to estimate these factors for the lime industry emissions from PRTR list were measured on four shaft kilns.

Opis:
Non-point source pollution is a primary cause for concern globally. Various models have been developed to tackle this situation with much emphasis placed on best management practices. This practice has, however, proven to be insufficient to solve the NPS pollution situation. Existing non-point source models are watershed- -based and complicated both in operation, parameter estimation and data requirements. A non-point source model is proposed using the concept of the Hybrid Cells in Series model. The model is a three-parameter model made up of three zones, which describes pure advection through time delay in a plug zone, with combined advection and dispersion occurring when the other two zones are considered as thoroughly mixed. The proposed model is tested using synthetic data and field data from the Snake River, Colorado, USA, obtained from literature. Simulations were performed at four sample points; two from the tracer injection point along the Snake River before a confluence and two further downstream after the confluence. A regression analysis was carried out to determine the model’s capability to simulate pollutant transport for the four sampling points. The coefficients of determination are 0.98, 0.94, 0.84 and 0.97 while the standard error for each reach is 2.28E-2, 2.70E-2, 2.32E-2 and 9.35E-3 respectively. The results show good agreement between the measured and the simulated data. The response of the C-t profiles produced by the proposed model for both synthetic and field data demonstrates its ability to effectively simulate pollutant transport in natural rivers subject to non-point source pollution.

Opis:
Reduction of pollutant emission by exhaust systems due to stricter limits has drastically increased the impact of previously ignored factors on the results of emission tests. One such factor is the cooling of the engine by the chassis dynamometer's external fan. Improper cooling can increase the temperature of the engine and the catalytic converter. Preliminary studies conducted by the Motor Transport Institute have confirmed that the configuration of the cooling fan influences exhaust system emissions. This article discusses the results of tests aimed at identifying the cause of changes in emission levels. To achieve this aim, emission levels were measured for various configurations of the chassis dynamometer (including both the fan speed and the distance from the front of the vehicle). During the tests, measurements were taken of temporary pollutant levels in the CVS and of the temperature of exhaust before and after the catalytic converter. The results confirmed the findings of preliminary tests. Increased exhaust emission levels were noted, though not, as anticipated, during the urban driving cycle, but rather during the final phase of the extra-urban driving cycle. Measurements were taken using a single-roller chassis dynamometer equipped with a cooling fan with a regulated fan speed specified by a second-degree curve.

Opis:
In the first part of this article, a mathematical model of conservative and passive pollutant propagation in one-dimensional flow of ground water (including advection and adsorption processes) has been presented. Basing on laboratory studies of pollution concentrations on a model for measuring adsorption and adopting the numerical solution for this mathematical model, adsorption parameters kI and n were also cal-culated (for non-linear function describing this process). In the second part, taking advantage of the calculated values of these parameters of adsorption, empirical re-lationships subjecting these adsorption parameters on both those characterising an aquiferous layer (competent diameter d10, spatial ground porosity p) and ground wa-ter flow (water level or pressure line slope of ground water) were worked out. At the same time, the values of pollutant concentration reductions as a result of adsorp-tion both from parameters characterising ground medium (competent diameter d10, spatial ground porosity p), ground water flow (pressure line slope I) and estimated adsorption parameters (k1, n) have also been worked out. At the end of this article basing on the empirical equations for adsorption parameter values, the calculated values of pollutant concentrations have also been calcu-lated and compared with the measured pollutant concentrations on a physical model.

This work is devoted to studying the dynamics of changes in phytotoxicity of oil-contaminated meadow soils in the process of microbial bioremediation. The research was conducted under laboratory and field conditions. Winter rye (Secále cereále) was selected as the test object. In order to assess the degree of toxicity in the laboratory, the indicators of seed germination – germination rate and germination energy-were determined. In a field experiment, the ecological state of oil-contaminated soils was evaluated by the germination rate and the amount of aboveground plant biomass. The research results showed that the content of petroleum products significantly affected the percentage of germination of rye seeds. There are differences in the size of seedlings for different experimental schemes: in all tests, the average height of cleoptila on polluted soil was less than on unpolluted soil, but at the same time it varied for different experimental bioremediation schemes. The use of potassium humate and modified vermiculite as additives significantly reduced the toxicity of the oil-contaminated soil.

Floristic composition in three industrial areas with soils contaminated by heavy metals (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Zn) and organic pollutants (polychlorinated biphenyls) was studied. The content of Pb was only significantly correlated with the floristic composition and explained 13.8% of its variability considering spatial dependency of the sites. No correlation was found for PCBs. Altogether, 237 plant vascular species were found at three study sites (117, 133 and 105, respectively). The three study areas differed in their species composition represented by their own characteristic species. The gradient in the content of natives/non-natives, species number, prevailing life forms and indicator values for plant species investigated was revealed. Based on our results, for phytoremediation purposes we can select productive plant species with high biomass and ability to accumulate large amounts of heavy metals or organic compounds and surviving on soils with low mineral content.

Opis:
Energy industry sector is one of the major environment pollutants. This branch also generates significant amounts of by-products such as slugs, slug-ash mixtures, ashes and microspheres, which can be very harmful for the earth ecosystems. Statistically the microspheres (MIC) constitute from 0.6% to 2.5% of the total amount of post combustion wastes. MIC occurs mainly in fly ashes (less often in slugs) as the smallest, hollow, spherical particles. MIC is composed mainly of crystalline and amorphous aluminosilicate phases. The combustion conditions have strong influence on MIC composition. Mineral and chemical composition of MIC is very similar to F type of fly ashes; consequently there is a possibility to use them as substrates for zeolite synthesis. Zeolites are minerals from microporous, aluminosilicate group (Szala et al. 2015). Among others, they are characterized by specific channels and chambers occurrence in their structure, which results in a number of important features like: ion exchange, sorption, molecular sieve or catalytic properties. This is the reason for wide use of zeolites in numerous industrial sectors (Ahmaruzzaman 2010). The aim of this study is a synthesis of Na-P1 zeolite at semi-technical scale by conversion of microspheres under hydrothermal conditions in an alkaline medium. This study involves also research of Na-P1 zeolite structure ripening in order to optimize the synthesis conditions. Microspheres from Stalowa Wola Power Plant (Poland) were used as a substrate. For the synthesis of Na-P1 phase the following conditions were applied: 90 dm 3 of water, 15 kg of microsphere, 11 kg of sodium hydroxide (3 mol/dm 3 ), temperature: 80°C, and reaction time up to 26 h (Franus et al. 2014). The zeolite conversion was performed on semi-technical scale installation (Wdowin et al. 2014). During the conversion, samples were collected from the reactor after 2, 4, 6, 10, 14, 26 hours. To investigate the influence of time for zeolitization process efficiency these samples were analyzed in terms of chemical and mineral composition, structural and textural properties. The main attention was paid to the evolution of the Na-P1 unit cell parameters observed as a function of time (calculations and models were performed for every sample). The phase’s composition was determined with powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) method using a PANalytical X’pert MPD diffractometer (with a PW 3050/60 goniometer), Cu lamp, and a graphite monochromator. The analysis was performed within the angle range of 5–65 2θ. PANalytical X’Pert Highscore software was used to process the diffraction data. The identification of mineral phases was based on the PDF-2 release 2010 database formalized by the ICD and IZA-SC Database of Zeolite Structures. The experimental calculations of the unit cell parameters were performed using UnitCell software. The spatial model of Na-P1 zeolite cell was prepared using Mercury 3.7 Windows software. The morphological forms and the chemical composition of the main mineral components were determined with scanning electron microscope (SEM) FEI Quanta 250 FEG equipped with the SE detector and a system of chemical composition analysis based on energy dispersive X-ray-EDS of EDAX company. N 2 adsorption-desorption measurements were carried out at 77 K using ASAP 2020 volumetric adsorption analyzer (Micromeritics). The specific surface areas (S BET ) of the samples were evaluated using the standard Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method for nitrogen adsorption data in the range of relative pressure p / p 0 from 0.06 to 0.3. The total pore volumes were estimated from single-point adsorption at a relative pressure of 0.98. XRD data indicates that main phases in microsphere are amorphous aluminosilicate glass, mullite and quartz. The obtained product is dominated by Na-P1 phase. Experimental calculations of cell parameters and fabricated models confirm crystallographic similarity to Na-P1 pattern. Noteworthy is the fact that the unit cell parameters depend on reaction time. Calculations indicate that the cell parameters (walls length: a , b , c and cell volume) increase with time towards to pattern values. This phenomenon may be interpreted as a ripening of crystalline structure. An in-depth look at this matter can lead to better estimation of synthesis conditions, which have a significant impact to the total cost of zeolites production – especially at a larger scale. SEM shows progressive dissolution (also as a function of time) of aluminosilicate glass in favor of crystallization of zeolite phase. EDS analysis confirms similarity of chemical composition of the obtained samples to a standard Na-P1 zeolite. Calculated textural properties indicate increase of S BET with the reaction time. Simultaneously, the average pore diameters decrease. The S BET of synthetized Na-P1 was 4.62 m 2 /g after 2 h but it increased to 47.92 m 2 /g after 26 h. This is an effect of growing contribution of zeolite phase in relation to the initial substrates in the sample during the reaction time. The experimental conditions allowed synthesizing Na-P1 zeolite from microsphere particles in the prototype installation. Zeolitization process strongly influences the textural properties by increasing S BET and improving pore structure. The microsphere from Stalowa Wola Power Plant is a promising material for the synthesis of Na-P1 zeolite in the prototype installation. Still, the reaction parameters should be reconsidered, basing on the obtained results, in order to reduce the cost of the zeolite production as much as possible. This is required before proceeding to the full technical production scale. To observe increase of zeolite amount in entirety synthesis batch (and to link it with cell behavior) the Rietveld analysis will be provided.

The objective of this research project was to evaluate the implementation of a phytoremediation system for the effluents generated by the National Cancer Institute (INCAN), Central Department, Paraguay to contribute to the management of the liquid waste that it generates. The system consisted of a set of three pools, in which were made up of floating Typha domingensis Pers plants, at an approximate density of 10 plants per m2, all the roots formed a filter, which was in direct contact with the effluent. The effluent was of continuous flow; the flows of entry and exit were regulated according to the generation of liquid waste by INCAN. There were 5 measurements made with an interval of 7 days for each measurement, at a point of entry and exit of the effluent, to determine the system. The parameters evaluated were: BOD5, COD, NTK, PT, pH, temperature, conductivity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and fecal coliforms. The results showed a considerable reduction of the pollutants generated for all the parameters evaluated, obtaining an efficiency of 67.9 to 92.4% in the evaluated parameters, indicating that it is very feasible to implement this type of systems for phytodepuration of liquid waste.

The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of point pollution sources on nitrogen concentrations in well water. Water samples were collected twice, in fall and in spring, at 13 selected water intake points in the villages Radzieje, Dłużec and Solanka, located in the Province of Warmia and Mazury. Water pollution was significantly affected by the distance from manure heaps and well depth. In all water samples organic nitrogen dominated over mineral nitrogen. Water in 9 out of 13 wells was characterized by elevated levels of biogenic forms: NO₃⁻, NH₄⁺, NO₂⁻. In addition, seasonal changes were observed in nitrogen concentrations. Higher values were recorded in water samples collected in spring, as compared with those collected in fall. The technical condition of wells and farm management methods had a considerable influence on water quality.

The environmental legislation in Ukraine is changing rapidly. These changes are related to the adaptation of Ukrainian laws to the requirements of the European Union. In this regard, the paper considers the unintentional production of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the Odessa Industrial-and-Urban Agglomeration (next – Odessa agglomeration) in the context of new regulatory and legal requirements of Ukraine. In many countries around the world, the issue of pollution of environmental components by POPs has a large focus, because POPs pose a global threat to the environment and human health. The work aims to assess the main sources of unintentional production of POPs in the Odessa agglomeration during one year (2017), taking into account the new territorial features of the Odessa agglomeration. For the first time for Odessa agglomeration, the mass of POPs formed by main sources using the newest European methodological approach was calculated, sources of unintentional production of POPs on volumes of these substances were ranked, and their total mass of generation on the territory of Odessa agglomeration was calculated. The number of POPs molecules equivalent to 2,3,7,8-TСDD, which infiltrate into the air basin of the Odessa agglomeration, hence into the organisms of the agglomeration inhabitants, was calculated. The obtained results were compared with the allowable number per capita of the agglomeration, the relevant conclusions were drawn. Priority sources of unintentional production of POPs were identified, which allows taking appropriate preventive measures to reduce the scale of their generation.

Opis:
W pracy dokonano oceny stopnia zanieczyszczenia powietrza pyłem i związanymi z nim WWA na obszarze pozamiejskim w regionie Polski północno-wschodniej (Puszcza Borecka). Analizie poddano wpływ warunków meteorologicznych na obserwowane ilości WWA w powietrzu atmosferycznym w latach 2008–2012, w ujęciu rocznym i sezonowym. Statystycznie istotne wyniki korelacji zawartości WWA w powietrzu z parametrami meteorologicznymi uzyskano w przypadku temperatury, natężenia całkowitego promieniowania słonecznego oraz usłonecznienia i parowania. Stwierdzono, że w ciepłym półroczu większy wpływ na zawartość WWA w powietrzu miała temperatura i wysokość opadów, zaś w chłodnym – natężenie promieniowania, usłonecznienie i parowanie.
In Poland, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are emitted into the atmosphere mainly from the non-industrial fossil fuel combustion and energy production sector, transport and industry. PAHs in ambient air are transported over long distances and their concentration in a given area depends primarily on the emission size and local meteorological conditions. Our study assessed the level of air pollution with particle-associated PAHs in rural area in North-Eastern Poland (Puszcza Borecka). Impact of weather conditions on PAH concentrations in ambient air in the period from 2008 to 2012 was analyzed on annual and seasonal basis. Statistically significant correlation results between PAH concentrations and meteorological parameters were achieved for temperature, total solar radiation intensity, sunshine duration and evaporation. It was established that the temperature and precipitation level had stronger influence on PAH air content in the warm half year, while radiation intensity, sunshine duration and evaporation – in the cool half-year period.
