Opis:
For many years, the subject of aggressive marketing campaigns conducted by pharmaceutical companies has been raised in Poland. Drug ads are everywhere, on television, the radio, magazines and on the Internet. Therefore, it is extremely important is to ensure both their legal and ethical dimension. This article will present the differences between direct-to-consumer advertising of medicines in Poland and in the US. The dissimilarities result mainly from differences in legislation. In Poland, the law is much stricter than in the US. For example, in the United States companies are allowed to advertise prescription drugs directly to patients. In the whole of the European Union, and thus in Poland, it is strictly prohibited. The article will also present other regulations existing in Poland and in the United States and it will compare them. It will offer examples of violations of the law and ethics in the advertising of medicine in both countries. Lastly, it will briefly outline the negative consequences of unacceptable pharmaceutical marketing.

Opis:
The pharmaceutical industry remains today a prominent high-technology sector of the economy, and consistently maintains its competitiveness on the world market at a very high level. Similarly to aircraft and spacecraft manufacturing and the electro-energy industry, pharmaceutical industry belongs to a group of innovative high-technology industries, which are based on scientific research results processed for industrial activities. The purpose of this study is to present and analyse global trends currently observed in the pharmaceutical industry in the world. In an era of increasing globalization, new prime movers of the development of the pharmaceutical industry are the countries from peripheralregions, mainly members of the BRICS group. For this reason, this article focuses on the emerging Asian and Latin American markets, next to the United States and countries of Western Europe. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Brazil and China deemed the stimulation of the pharmaceutical industry one of the prime determinants of their future economic development. The following paper at first presents characteristics of the pharmaceutical industry products: innovative and generic medicines, medications available without prescription, biological agents, biosimilars and pharmaceutical substrates. Furthermore, the author specifies the properties and rates the dynamics of changes that are taking place in the global pharmaceutical market, while explaining the specifics of the relocation of the pharmaceutical industry. By comparing the number of publications in the field of pharmacy in selected countries of the world, the author confirmed the increasing importance of this industry on the global economy. In the last part of the article, the author presents the structure, number and distribution of clinical trials on a global scale. To illustrate the trends currently taking place in the development of the pharmaceutical industry, the author used raw statistical data in the field of pharmacology and literature on the subject.

There are several burning issues that we need to face on this field, such as: How to deal with the conflict of interests within the medicine? How to mark the vanishing boundaries between information and advertisement concerning the pharmaceutical education? How does the drug advertisement lead to the pharmaceuticalization of society? In the text all of these problems will be briefly analysed. The article has an introductory character, it may serve as an overview of the burning issues in the pharmaceutical industry ethics – all questions that are posed in the text need further examination.

This article demonstrates that journalists and their publications influenced the rise of ethical standards of pharmaceutical marketing in Poland. Nowadays media perform a substantial role in creating and changing reality. In this article, investigations of Polish journalists concerning the relation of doctors with medical sales representatives are described. The author analyses Polish pharmaceutical law and existence of the self-regulation of ethical organizations of pharmaceutical companies and of doctors in Poland. It also presents the results of in-depth interviews with medical sales representatives and shows their opinion whether journalistic investigations and other disapproving publications in the media influenced their work and the functioning of their company. Before reporters started revealing possible reservations about the cooperation of physicians with industry representatives, this subject was largely neglected. Published press reports caused further examinations, and often led to the arrest of persons associated with corruption. It is possible that first journalistic, and then prosecutor’s investigations sharpened the the Polish pharmaceutical law of 2007.

The involvement of the pharmaceutical industry in medical education can be seen as something completely natural. Who better than the producer of the med-icine would know how the drug was developed, how the process of it being au-thorized for sale proceeded, and what the side effects of it are? Today in the United States, more and more colleges are implementing strong pharmaceutical conflict-of-interest policies. Interaction between students and medical school staff with these companies is undesirable, because they share marketing materi-als more often than honest data, and their representatives use various ways to influence these current and future physicians during their meetings. This article will describe research which shows what pharmaceutical mar-keting directed at students looks like in the USA – its character, frequency, and potential impact on future medical decisions. Also, ways of regulating interac-tion between medical schools, their staff and students and the pharmaceutical industry will be expressed. Guidelines of the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Institute of Medicine and the American Medical Student Associa-tion will be described. At the end, questions about their influence on reality and whether medical schools’ policies can be an effective barrier for pharmaceutical marketing on medical schools will be asked.

This article examines how the communication network of the Japanese pharmaceutical industry operated around the turn of the century to create spatial interactions across the national medicine market during a period of intense industrialization. In 1901, pharmaceutical wholesalers in Osaka compiled The Telegraph Codebook of Pharmacies in Japan to facilitate national trade in medicine, although its use was restricted to only the 177 pharmacies that joined the Pharmaceutical Telegraph Communication Alliance. This alliance had close ties with wholesalers in Osaka and comprised national-level qualified chemists. The use of this communication network by telegraph enabled the integration and progression of the Japanese pharmaceutical market in the early 20th century; however, pharmacies also began to build diferent and layered communication networks that corresponded to their respective business styles. Findings indicate that pharmacies used diferent communication networks of diferent spatial scales, thereby operating regional specialization and national integration networks simultaneously.

The patents regime in healthcare sector and its tussle with right to public health is a long controversial saga. The crux of matter which is debated focuses upon providing patent rights that reduces the accessibility of cost-effective healthcare services, particularly in developing country. The counter point to this has remained that providing patent allows nurturing of research and development in the healthcare sector, which promotes the healthcare industry to take initiatives to tackle various health related problems and provide better treatment. According to the rival opinions presented in the aforesaid, the centre of the issue is health, therefore it is necessary to discuss the corresponding rights of citizens and duties of the government to make healthcare industry favourable.

The current Indian national drug policy has its roots in two documents originated in the 70-ties and the 80-ties of the XX. century. Although the first National Drug Policy was declared in 1978, it has been revised thrice since then, in 1986, 1994 and 2002. Also, in 1986 another document on the Indian drug policy, titled “Measures for Rationalisation, Quality Control and Growth of Drugs and Pharmaceutical Industry in India” was evolved. The drug policy has been implemented under some legal acts related mainly to the fields of health care, family welfare, scientific research and development, and industry. It emerged from the findings of the Hathi Committee (a committee commissioned to study the operations of multinational drug companies vis-à-vis indigenous companies and public sector undertakings).

In world literature a lot is written about contacts of physicians with pharmaceutical industry, however less research are dealing with the cooperation of business with medical students. In Poland this problem have not been studied, yet. The article will discuss those issues and will show the results of the quantitative research conducted with the self-administered questionnaire amongst medical students from the Warsaw Medical University and four medical schools from Philadelphia in US. In Poland 52,5% of total number of medical students and in US 34,6% have participated at the lecture, seminars, presentation or other educational meeting organized by the pharmaceutical company. Among Polish respondents 49,1% and among American 21,4% have received a gift from pharmaceutical company. US students (41,0%) more often than Polish ones (37,7%) have talked with pharmaceutical representative about drugs, but Polish (10,0%) more often than American students (5,8%) have talked with reps about personal issues. All the problems connected with proper cooperation with industry such as: critical look at marketing materials from pharmaceutical companies; seeking the reliable information about drugs; methods of the manipulation and influence used by reps; ethical standards of the cooperation of physicians with pharmaceutical industry; legal standards of the cooperation of physicians with industry; revealing potential and existing conflicts of interest – were brought up statistically significant more rarely in Polish medical schools than in US medical education. Polish students more often have contact with different forms of pharmaceutical marketing than their US colleagues and weaker education concerning. Those results should arise concern and willingness of changes.
