Opis:
This article tries to diagnose possibilities and limitations of the online media as a digital agora — a virtual space for citizens’ deliberation which could potentially strengthen and enhance democracy in Poland, as well as in other Central European countries. Considering the key features of the public sphere indicated by Habermas (inclusiveness, rationality, autonomy, lack of hierarchy), the analysis focuses on three problem areas. The first one includes the impact of digital exclusion upon availability of the digital public sphere for citizens. The second part of the study is devoted to rationality and interactivity of online discourse. The last part of the analysis addresses the impact of the relative anonymity of online communication on the equality and autonomy of citizens’ deliberation on the internet.

Every day social media provide an enormous amounts of information and knowledge through language and multimodal texts. The most common topics in Internet communication are political events, their description and comments on them. Thus, by Internet texts knowledge is created and transferred. Depending on the country and political culture, this constructed knowledge of a particular political event may cover different areas. In order to demonstrate similarities and di erences in the constituting of knowledge, this article focuses on the semantic construction of tweets, that have been published by the German and Polish political stakeholders on President Donald Trump’s election win and his assumption of office.

The observations presented in this paper fall within the confines of a plan covering a broader scope of research on the key notions underlying the constitution and polarisation of the Polish economic discourse on popular web portals. The idealised cognitive models (ICMs) of “work”, actualised in the discourse, are subject to a linguistic reconstruction and the methodological principle consists in an analysis of semantic profi les of the key symbol and recurrent collocations as well as the standard phrases invoking the identified central notion. The divergent views on the operation of the economy presented by two distinctive groups of discourse participants: advocates and critics of capitalism provide an important interpretative framework determining the diverse profiling of the category “work” in the online debate. The controversy of the notion manifests itself also in the fact that the two contradictory cognitive models built around it are composed not only of the axioms accepted by a given group but also of the ones it ascribes to their opponents.

Im Artikel wird am Beispiel von LeserInnenkommentaren im Schweizer Online-Newsportal watson.ch der Frage nachgegangen, inwiefern sich bei Online-Communities Merkmale von traditionaler Vergemeinschaftung (sensu Max Weber) nachzeichnen lassen und ob sich das Konzept der Diskursgemeinschaft(en) damit in Verbindung bringen lässt. Dafür wird der Begriff der Diskursgemeinschaft zunächst im widersprüchlichen Spannungsfeld zwischen sprach- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaftsverständnissen verortet. Anschliessend wird anhand ausgewählter Kommentare untersucht, wie sich klassische Vergemeinschaftungsmerkmale in Kommentarforen auf empirischer Ebene manifestieren. Abschliessend wird ein Lösungsvorschlag skizziert, wie die Systemtheorie nach Niklas Luhmann die Aporien zwischen verschiedenen on- und offline Vergemeinschaftungsformen überbrücken und damit einen integrativen Rahmen für die konfligierenden Gemeinschaftsverständnisse der klassischen Soziologie und der Diskursanalyse anbieten kann.  
Using examples from comment sections in the Swiss online news site watson.ch, we investigate the question whether such online reader communities show traces of communal relationships (in the sense of Max Weber) and if such an understanding is compatible with the concept of discourse communities. To this end, we first outline the conflicting theoretical assumptions that linguistic and sociological understandings of communities imply for the concept of discourse communities. Afterwards, we use selected online reader comments to show how traditional features of community formation can be detected empirically in the comment section. To conclude, we argue that Niklas Luhmann’s systems theory can serve as a framework to integrate different types of community formation processes on an empirical and a theoretical level.

The work is an attempt to show how the concept of fuoco (fire) is conceptualized in Italian persuasive discourse regarding the health and beauty of women. The conducted research (mainly based on the notion of metaphor by G. Lakoff and M. Johnson) reveals a number of relationships among the analysed concept and many others – related to both the physical and mental sphere of a modern woman. The valuation of fire is also noteworthy, as the fire functions in the linguistic system as a neutral concept, while in the corpus subjected to analysis, depending on the context, it gains positive or negative characteristics.

Increasing popularity and dynamic expansion of online newspapers creates a need for an in-depth analysis of online press, genre and discourse properties of online news in particular. The aim of the following analysis is to investigate genre characteristics of a newly developed news structure – a news abstract. The analysis examines the basic conventions concerning the purpose, form and content of these text types. The study encompasses news abstracts published on the websites of leading British, German and Polish newspapers. The inclusion of websites of culturally distinct newspapers was designed to evaluate the degree of universality and internationalization of the structure.

Effective opinion writing should present the author’s viewpoint in a convincing way but also engage the reader. Whether the author makes more references to their own viewpoints or to the reader is determined by the context of the text. Metadiscourse is a pragmatic framework of explicit linguistic devices used to make references to the reader, the writer and their evaluations, as well as references to the textual organisation. This paper employs the corpus-driven method Multi-Dimensional Analysis to study statistically significant correlation patterns between metadiscourse markers. Four patterns emerge from a specialized corpus of opinion writing online in English by (semi-)professional writers (285,000 words). The patterns are here thought to represent writers’ strategies to define the relationship between themselves, the reader and the topic. While there are some overlaps and cross-genre tendencies, the metadiscoursal style is to some extent be determined by the prevailing norms of the sub-genre of the text – here, whether the publication platform is a blog, a news site, or the website of a print-newspaper. Blogs tend use a writer-oriented strategy with more self-mentions, and news sites a reader-oriented strategy or a solidarity strategy uniting the reader and writer under a shared “we”-pronoun. The results of the study may be of value both in understanding the journalistic online genres and for the development of the metadiscourse framework.
Skutecznie napisana opinia powinna w przekonujący sposób przedstawiać punkt widzenia autora, ale też i angażować czytelnika. To, czy autor czyni więcej odniesień do swoich punktów widzenia czy do czytelnika zależy od kontekstu pojawienia się danego tekstu. Metadyskurs stanowi pragmatyczną strukturę jawnych strategii lingwistycznych wykorzystywanych do tworzenia odniesień do czytelnika, do autora i do ich sądów, jak również tworzenia odniesień do organizacji tekstualnej. W niniejszym artykule wykorzystano metodę wielowymiarowej analizy (Multi-Dimensional Analysis) do zbadania statystycznie istotnych wzorców korelacji między znacznikami metadyskursowymi. Badanie specjalistycznego korpusu pisania online opinii po angielsku przez (pół) profesjonalnych autorów (285 000 słów) wyłoniło cztery wzorce. W zaproponowanej tu interpretacji reprezentują one strategie autorów, mające na celu zdefiniowanie relacji między nimi samymi, czytelnikiem a tematem. Mimo zazębiania się i istnienia tendencji międzygatunkowych, użycie metadyskursu jest w pewnym stopniu zdeterminowane przez obowiązujące normy podgatunku tekstu – tutaj, na przykład określenie czy platforma publikacji jest blogiem, portalem z wiadomościami lub stroną internetową gazety drukowanej. Blogi zazwyczaj wykorzystują strategię nakierowaną na autora, z większą ilością auto-odniesień. Z kolei portale informacyjne stosują strategię zorientowaną na czytelnika, lub też strategię solidarnościową, łączącą czytelnika i autora w inkluzyjnym zaimku "my". Wyniki badania mogą mieć wartość zarówno w zrozumieniu dziennikarskich gatunków internetowych, jak i dla rozwoju ram metadyskursywnych.

The present research study was carried out in an online learning environment in a small group of eighth-grade students. The research proposes a learning framework that relies on collaborative mathematical discourse with the intention to promote the reasoning ability of students with difficulties in mathematics. The aim of mathematical discourse is the reciprocal building of the ability of the learner with difficulties to provide explanations during the discourse between the learner and his peers and between the learner and the teacher. This type of learning was found to be effective, and the communicational continuum between the learner and the material and between the learner and the group is preserved. The learning process built on authentic mathematical tasks strengthened the learners’ ability to create communication among themselves. The discourse encouraged the development of mathematical thinking abilities among the learners with difficulties, such as posing arguments and drawing conclusions while explaining and justifying these arguments. The mathematical discourse also encouraged students to choose and to monitor the form and processes of their thinking and increased their problem-solving ability.

The following paper focuses on newspaper live blogs. The aim of the analysis is to investigate the structure and discourse properties of this news format. The analysis examines the basic conventions concerning the form and content of these text types, including structural components of live blogs, multimedia, quoting and linking patterns, as well as discourse strategies used to underline “liveness”, interactivity and evaluation. The analysis proves that the discourse of live blogs constitutes an example of open structure news discourse, and reflects a blending of discourse properties typical of blogs as well as of broadcast and newspaper reporting.

Opis:
The article is aimed at determining the topical structure of sexist hate speech as form of intolerant discourse. Sexist hate speech is viewed as a type of gender-based hate speech that is influenced by the same social, political and legal, cultural and ethical factors as sexual orientation-based or gender identity-based hate speech. The article proposes a topical structure of hate speech in general and provides the examples of verbalization of sexist hate speech topics and subtopics in the Belarusian online discourse.
Celem artykułu jest określenie struktury tematycznej seksistowskiej mowy nienawiści jako formy nietolerancyjnego dyskursu. Seksistowski język wrogości rozpatrywany jest jako rodzaj genderowo uwarunkowanego języka wrogości, na który wpływają te same społeczne, polityczno-prawne i kulturowo--etniczne czynniki, co na język wrogości, oparty na orientacji seksualnej lub identyfikacji genderowej. W artykule zaproponowano całościowe ujęcie struktury tematycznej języka wrogości, przytaczane są przykłady werbalizacji tematów i podtematów seksistowskiego języka wrogości w dyskursie internetowym Białorusi.
Целью статьи является определение тематической структуры сексистского языка вражды как формы интолерантного дискурса. Сексистский язык вражды рассматривается как вид гендерно обусловленного языка вражды, на который влияют те же социальные, политико-правовые и культурно-этические факторы, что и на язык вражды, основанный на сексуальной ориентации или гендерной идентичности. В статье предлагается тематическая структура языка вражды в целом и приводятся примеры вербализации тем и подтем сексистского языка вражды в интернет-дискурсе Беларуси.

The dual nature of water (acqua) in feminine portals – The work is an attempt to show how the concept of acqua (water) is conceptualized in Italian persuasive discourse regarding the health and beauty of modern women. The conducted research mainly based on the notion of imagery in language (Langacker) and linguistic picture of the world (Bartmiński) reveals a number of semantic and axiological aspects involved by the analyzed concept. The valuation of acqua is also noteworthy, as water functions in the linguistic system as a neutral concept, while the corpus subjected to the analysis shows that it has a double face: it is benevolent and destructive at the same time.
Praca jest próbą pokazania, w jaki sposób pojęcie acqua (woda) jest konceptualizowane we włoskim dyskursie perswazyjnym dotyczącym zdrowia i urody współczesnych kobiet. Przeprowadzone badania, oparte głównie na pojęciu obrazowania w języku (Langacker) i językowym obrazie świata (Bartmiński), ujawniają szereg aspektów semantycznych i aksjologicznych związanych z analizowanym pojęciem. Na uwagę zasługuje również wartościowanie wody, gdyż pojęcie to w języku generalnie ma neutralny charakter, natomiast w analizowanym korpusie nabiera cech zarówno negatywnych jak i pozytywnych.

This paper examines the Czech online news media representation of Vladimir Putin during three presidential elections (American of 2016, Czech and Russian of 2018). The portrayal of the Russian leader is examined using the methods of the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), mainly by the approach formulated by Teun van Dijk. The results showed a negatively biased portrayal of the president, Russian policy and the country itself, which corresponds with the historical-political context of the Czech-Russian relations, and which is in accordance with the Western media discourse. Applying the methods of global coherence revealed that the overarching theme of the coverage is Putin’s efforts to re-establish Russia as the global power and to restore the binary world as it was during the Cold war, while the methods of local coherence disclosed many implications, categorizations and the ubiquitous sarcasm and negativity in most of the texts.

The study concentrates on the phenomenon of user-generated content on the internet. The article presents an introductory analysis of various rhetorical strategies used by the authors of commentaries on one of the popular user-contributory sites, i.e. www.iReport.com. The analysis of this site shows that there exists a range of diverse means of expression used by the enthusiasts of broadcasting online, involving the submission of written articles, live video commentaries, audio files and cartoons. The study shows that users shape the features of the content in different manners and resort to the use of a variety of rhetorical devices. To the main properties of discourse belong personalization, interactivity, use of figurative and vivid language.

Without access to physical cues normally present in face-to-face interaction or extralinguistic information, like ethnographic background or physical attributes, multiple salient online identities, (collectively labelled as a personal identity cluster), can be crafted by exploiting the tools available within the online medium. By examining the language choices of a single participant to an online discussion board, it is shown how identity can be created through interaction, utilizing principles of emergence, indexicality (labels, stances), relationality (positive and negative), and positionality (temporary roles) and partialness. Identity, as described through the standpoint of sociocultural linguistics, is thereby a performance created for and modified through interaction with others. Examples from a case study are shown to validate and enrich this theoretical position.
W komunikacji za pośrednictwem internetu uczestnicy muszą obejść się bez informacji pozajęzykowych, które są normalnie dostępne w komunikacji bezpośredniej, takich jak pochodzenie czy wygląd. Dlatego w kontekście komunikacji online możliwe jest tworzenie różnorakich tożsamości (zwanych zbiorczo zlepkami tożsamości osobowych) przy wykorzystaniu jedynie środków dostępnych w tym medium. Analizując wybory językowe jednego uczestnika forum dyskusyjnego, autorka pokazuje jak można skonstruować tożsamość poprzez interakcję. W swoich badaniach autorka używa pięciu reguł tworzenia takich tożsamości zaproponowanych przez Bucholtz i Hall w 2005: zasady pojawiania się, indeksowania (etykiet, podejścia), zależności (pozytywnej i negatywnej), reguły pozycyjności (tymczasowych ról) oraz zasady złożoności. Tożsamość, opisana z punktu widzenia lingwistyki socjo-kulturowej, jest więc definiowana jako produkt, który jest wynikiem komunikowania się z innymi. Przykłady zaczerpnięte z badań autorki nad internetowym forum dyskusyjnym potwierdzają tę teorię i oferują możliwości jej dalszego rozwinięcia.
In der Online-Kommunikation, anders als es in der direkten Kommunikation der Fall ist, haben die Kommunikationspartner keine Informationen über ihre Herkunft oder das Aussehen. Aus diesem Grund entsteht die Notwendigkeit, in der Online-Kommunikation die Identität (auch Konglomerat von Identitäten genannt) mittels sprachlicher Mittel, die in der online Kommunikation zugänglich sind, auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise herzustellen. Die Autorin zeigt, wie man durch eine Online-Interaktion die Identität konstruieren kann, indem die Sprache eines Teilnehmers von Online-Diskussionsforum analysiert wird. Dabei bezieht sich die Autorin auf fünf Regeln der Identitätskonstruierung, die von Bucholtz und Hall (2005) entwickelt wurden, z. B. das Prinzip der Emergenz, der Indexikalität, der Relationalität, der Positionalität und der Komplexität. Aus der Perspektive der sozio-kulturellen Linguistik ist die Identität ein Produkt, das erst in der Interaktion entsteht. Die angeführten Beispiele bestätigen die Theorie und bieten die Möglichkeit ihrer weiteren Entwicklung.
