Opis:
The aim of the article is to analyze methodological aspects of implementing research project in a culturally different environment, where a language and national identity difference between interviewee and interviewer is present. The analysis is based on the fieldwork done by the Polish researcher in Ukraine. I try to answer whether different nationality influences in such situation the interaction with the interviewees and the results of the research, whether it is a burden or an advantage, and how this possible influence can be controlled. I am interested in issues of contact with the interviewees and interaction during the interview as such, as well as various kinds of the narrative’s modification by the interviewee because of the different nationality of the researcher. I illustrate the following problems with citations of the interviews conducted in the frame of the project.
Celem artykułu jest analiza metodologicznych aspektów prowadzenia badań w obcym kulturowo środowisku, w sytuacji różnic językowych i różnych identyfikacji narodowych badacza i rozmówcy. Analiza problemu podjęta została na przykładzie badań terenowych zrealizowanych przez polską badaczkę na Ukrainie. Staram się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy odmienna narodowość ma w takiej sytuacji wpływ na interakcję z rozmówcami oraz otrzymywany materiał, czy jest ona obciążeniem czy zaletą, a także w jaki sposób można ten wpływ kontrolować. Interesuje mnie kwestia kontaktu z rozmówcami i interakcji podczas samego wywiadu oraz różnego rodzaju przypadki modyfikowania narracji przez rozmówcę ze względu na odmienną identyfikację narodową badacza. Prezentację poszczególnych problemów pojawiających się w toku realizacji badań i analizy materiału ilustruję fragmentami nagranych w ramach badań wywiadów.

Arka Przymierza jest symbolicznym artefaktem, którego obraz stworzony?/zwizualizowany? oparty? jest na opisie biblijnym. Jest ona generatorem licznych narracji, których akcja toczy się w wyjątkowych miejscach (Jerozolima, Etiopia, Egipt, zamki templariuszy, katedry gotyckie, Jamajka…). Buduje wokół sieć innych przekazów i ruchów (templariusze, masoni, katarzy, rastafarianie); pobudza do działania (wycieczki objazdowe do Etiopii, przeszukiwanie dawnych komandorii templariuszy, langwedockich zabytków, średniowiecznych katedr); włączona jest w konflikt izraelsko‑palestyński; prowokuje eksplorację Internetu; uczestnictwo?/ członkostwo? w „klanach” gier komputerowych. W katolicyzmie utożsamiona z Matką Boską, co tworzy zaczątek nowej, mitycznej narracji. Jej etiopska legenda Kebra Nagast stanowi pożywkę dumy narodowej i uwiarygodnienie dynastii salomońskiej – władającej Etiopią do trzeciej dekady XX wieku. Buduje przekaz ambiwalentnych wartości – pokój : zagłada, relatywizacja za‑/nakazów : bezwzględne posłuszeństwo, wartości absolutne : większe/mniejsze zło/dobro. Łączy się ponadto z zapowiedzią końca świata.
The Ark of the Covenant is a symbolic artifact, whose image is based on the Biblical description. It generates numerous narrations, whose action takes place in exceptional places such as Jerusalem, Ethiopia, Egypt, Templar castles, gothic cathedrals. It is surrounded by other traditions and movements: Knights of the Temple, Masons, Cathars, Rastafarians. It spurs into action: trips to Ethiopia, visiting Templar commandery, old ruins in Languedoc, medieval cathedrals. It is part of the Arab‑Israeli conflict, and motivates people to search the internet or join online computer game clans. In the Catholic tradition it is associated with Mother of God, which is a starting point for another mythical narration. Its Ethiopian legend Kebra Nagast feeds the national pride and gives credibility to the Solomon dynasty which ruled Ethiopia until the 1930 s. The Arc conveys ambivalent values such as peace ‑ destruction, imperatives ‑ prohibitions, unquestionable values – the lesser evil. Moreover, it is connected with the prophecy of the end of the world.

The fantastic is one of the elements in the narrative poetics of Joan Barceló, a seminal Catalan writer of the 70s. The purpose of this article is to analyse the fantastic from a theoretical perspective, including its specific uses in Barceló’s stories and novels, how it works and why. Thus, the paper draws on the concept of the neofantastic to reveal a literary space of aesthetic and ideological transgression that moves among three thresholds: the magical or fairy, the unusual and the absurd or nonsense.

The paper presents the concept of fundamentally new direction in the field of narratological studies – historical narratology. The author suggests turning to the research experience accumulated in Russian historical poetics by A. Veselovsky, P. Ricoeur’s and W. Schmid works. Narratology is seen as a theory of forming, storing and transmitting the event experience of the presence of the human self in the world. In particular, the work deals with diegetic picture of the world, with the historical dynamics of the most important types of narrative intrigue, and with the ethos of narrative. The most important characteristics of narrative are integrated into the concept of narrative strategy of a particular discourse. The emergence, spread and coexistence of narrative strategies in the diachronic dimension of the culture of storytelling as a form of human communication is at the core of research interest in historical narratology.

The paper is an attempt at shedding light on the issues related to the dystopian vision of postmodern society metonymically represented by Vado, an imaginary city, in the novel Un incendio invisible written by Sara Mesa. This abandoned urban space causes us to reflect on crucial topics in postmodern society, such as incorporation into unknown place, redefinition of the concept of parenthood, liquid and perverse love, social inequalities, abandoned elders, consumption, role of shopping malls and their significance, human alienation, all phenomena that we find in the novel. The city of Vado plays symbolic role in that piece, hence its devastation and ruin show a close connection with the consumer society and the actions of Homo consumericus. We base our analysis on the philosophical and sociological postulates of Gilles Lipovetsky, Zygmunt Bauman, Erich Fromm and anthropological one of Marc Augé, as well as on the proposal of how to read a novel by Javier del Prado Biezma in order to describe the nature of all these mentioned problems and expose the criticism of Homo consumericus concealed in the novel.

The article concerns women’s presence in the area of art, especially the complex conditions of mothers’ literary activities. The author analyses the most important inhibitors of mothers’ literary works infuenced, among others, by material, psychological and socio-cultural factors in the context of “anxiety of authorship” and indicates their connections with the process of tradition and literary communication building. The works of contemporary mothers (among others S. Plath, E. Şafak, R. Cusk, J. Jagiełło) related to the record of individual experience is, in the context of the subject matter and emancipatory issues, a gesture of regaining “one’s own room” and one’s own voice as well as a basis to re-vise (A. Rich) the canon of creative imagination.

This paper discusses the concept of the hero and the role of memory as an object of (re)construction of the world in the narrative of the Nintendo digital game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Through the analysis of how memory is reconstructed in Link and the characters that inhabit Hyrule, memories, historical and social memory, monuments, documents, space, and gameplay within the same digital game are also reconstructed. Testimonial memory, in turn, will help remember and construct the narrative of Link’s personal and social history by reconstructing the story. The personal experience that the player has while interacting with the game through the act of playing can build the metadiscourse between memory and narrative to understand the hero and his journey through the world. In this sense, the importance of the character Link within the game is affirmed, as he is a much more complex subject than a simple archetype within the game mechanics.

The artistic dominant of the essay by I.S. Turgenev is to be found in the confessional nature of the author's lyrical and philosophical thoughts. The artist removes the keyword “note” from the title of the work and, instead, repeats it in the text. The work expresses the tragic worldview of the hero, who keenly felt the powerlessness of humanity and the values it created in relation to the vastness of the universe and the power of nature. The obvious subjectivity of the essay, however, does not allow us to identify the writer and the narrator, because Turgenev manages to maintain the position of “out–of–place” (M. Bakhtin) in relation to his hero.

The article juxtaposes the problems of spatiality and repetition in video game narrative with Gertrude Stein’s notion of the landscape play, in which the linear plot dissolves in favour of a complex network of connections between different elements of the work. Several examples are discussed, from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to the Dark Souls series, showing the possible links between video games and Stein’s writing techniques, especially in the field of open world games, where the large, easily accessible spaces make it more difficult to build coherent, organised plots.

Opis:
The paper aims to consider the phenomenon of the cliffhanger as one of the narrative techniques for ending a work of art. A cliffhanger involves creating intrigue or intense anticipation of the outcome both in the final part and in individual episodes of the work. In literary texts, the cliffhanger is presented as a meta-narrative phenomenon, as the writer offers a multi-vector development of the plot line involving complex situations and conflicts, the causes and solutions of which are often hidden or unclear. Such plot modeling leads to in uncertainty, a sense of mystery and an emotional climax. It is the reader who must build a hypothetical relationship between the events and characters described, determining their place and role in the development of the topic, based on textual data, their own reading experience, associations and perceptual abilities. Thus, a cliffhanger is an integral part of building and resolving artistic conflicts. In the novel The Secret of the Yellow Room, it is represented by the actual linguistic and stylistic parameters and extralinguistic characteristics that stimulate the perceptual activity of the reader.
