This study presents the behavior of vertically confined square footing on geogrid-reinforced sand under centric inclined loading through a series of experimental tests. The load was applied at 5°, 10° and 20° angles of inclination with the vertical. The tests were conducted on surface footing, footing with confiner and footing with confiner and horizontal reinforcement configurations subjected to inclined loading. Parametric variations like depth of the confiner (d=1B, 1.5B, 2B), number of geogrid layers (N; varies with variation in depth of confiner), and spacing between horizontal reinforcements (Y=0.25B, 0.5B, 0.75B, 1B) have been investigated at the top surface dimension of confiner (D) as 1.0B, 1.5B and 2.0B (where B is the width of the model footing). Results show that combined effect of confiner and horizontal reinforcement increases the ultimate bearing capacity of footing significantly compared to only confiner for all angle of inclinations. It can also be observed that load bearing capacities decrease with increase in angles of inclination and record the minimum improvement at 20° angle of inclination. Improvement in bearing capacities and reduction in settlement of footing analyzed in terms of bearing capacity ratio (BCR) and settlement reduction factor (SRF) are compared for all footing configurations. To summarize, the test results showed that confiner along with reinforcement can be considered as an economic ground improvement technique for shallow foundations to counter against heavily inclined loading.

The paper has been intended to introduce a probabilistic method to estimate - from the standpoint of fatigue - the risk of a catastrophic failure to rotating (moving) members of an aircraft engine, i.e. to compressor blades. It has been assumed that there is a hidden defect in the material's structure, which initiates a small-size crack. Load-affected, the crack keeps growing. The crack propagation dynamics, when approached in a deterministic way, remains consistent with the Paris formula. The crack growth is effected by some random load characterised with the servicing load spectrum. While determining the load spectrum, all possible operational events are taken into account, excluding ones that could result in an immediate damage to the component. It has been assumed that random instances of load increase, which may result in an immediate damage, compose a separate set of events; hence, they have not been taken into account in this model. A partial differential equation of the Fokker-Planck type has been used to describe randomly approached dynamics of crack propagation. Having solved this equation enables a density function of the fatigue crack length to be found. This function, in turn, has been used to determine the risk of a catastrophic failure to a compressor blade. Furthermore, this function can also be used to find safe service life of the structure under consideration.

Structural components are often operated under combined stress conditions (primary and secondary stresses), but the stress levels generated by residual stress (or secondary stress) is hardly ever evaluated. Hence, stress intensity factors at the crack tips of a compact tension (CT) specimen under a pre-compressed load condition are analyzed using the finite element method. Then, the average residual stress intensity factor is calculated and analyzed. As the crack length α0/W increases, the average residual stresses σave/σ0 grows under the same pre-compression load. σave/σ0 increases rapidly at a low range of the pre-compression load but tends to a constant in a high range of the load. The distribution of the average residual stress intensity factors Kave and Κave/σ0 of the CT specimen with same crack length under different pre-compression loads have the same tendency. Additionally, the distribution of Κave and KFEM under different pre-compression loads are also similar. Nevertheless, Kave estimated by the average residual stress is too conservative and not accurate, and the method is complex, which depends on the analysis of simulation. Therefore, a simple method for calculating Mode I stress intensity factor K for this model is presented. A group of examples is presented to verify the accuracy of the method.

Opis:
This article presents numerical finite element method (FEM) analysis of the stress concentration at toes and crack-like faults in load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints with transversal slits resulting from non-fused root faces. Potential fatigue damage of such joints subjected to cyclic tensile and bending loads appears in the form of fatigue cracks starting from the weld roots or toes. The aim of this article is to find qualitative and quantitative relationships between geometrical parameters of the load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joint subjected to tensile and bending loads and the stress concentration at weld toes and roots. The results of the analysis represented by the stress concentration factors (SCFs) and the stress intensity factors KI and KII are shown in the form of tables, graphs and mathematical formulas, which may be applied for fatigue assessment of such joints.

The bending problem of an infinite, piecewise homogeneous, isotropic plate with circular interfacial zone and two coaxial radial cracks is solved on the assumption of crack closure along a line on the plate surface. Using the theory of functions of a complex variable, complex potentials and a superposition of plane problem of the elasticity theory and plate bending problem, the solution is obtained in the form of a system of singular integral equations, which is numerically solved after reducing to a system of linear algebraic equations by the mechanical quadrature method. Numerical results are presented for the forces and moments intensity factors, contact forces between crack faces and critical load for various geometrical and mechanical task parameters.

The present paper attempts to attribute the role of bioclimatic indexes and their importance in the development and evolution of cultures. With the aid of GIS, a case study is presented aiming to point out the use of GIS is the study of bioclimatic indexes in theoretical study fields, such as, in this case, in Archaeology and more specifically, in the field of Geoarchaeology. Geoarchaeology is not a discipline, but an interdisciplinary approach, which has everything to gain by taking geomorphological methods and techniques into account (Fouache et al., 2010). Τhe study area is the Prefecture of Messenia, located in south west Greece. The Prefecture of Messenia is one of the best documented areas of mainland Greece. It has been both extensively surveyed and excavated. The archaeological finds are numerous, dating from prehistory to the modern times. Thus, a vast amount of information has helped historians, archaeologists and other scientists to recreate the past.

W pracy zaproponowano kompleksową metodę obliczania natężenia deszczu granicznego, uwzględniającą charakterystyczny przepływ wody w odbiorniku (Q270) oraz wpływ stopnia zanieczyszczenia zrzutów burzowych na odbiornik Przy jej tworzeniu uwzględniono wyniki badań krajowych i zagranicznych (Niemcy, Szwajcaria i Wielka Brytania), dotyczących projektowania przelewów burzowych. Przedstawiona metoda uwzględnia wpływ dwunastu charakterystycznych parametrów zrzutów burzowych (ß, z, Qs, cs, Qp, cp, QB, Q1, Q270, ts, Hz, q15) oraz uwarunkowania ochrony odbiornika (kategorie A, B i C), który nie jest źródłem wody do celów wodociągowych. Wykazano, że największe znaczenie w proponowanej metodzie mają parametry określające wpływ biofilmu i osadów wypłukiwanych z kanałów (ß), zanieczyszczenia pochodzące ze spływów powierzchniowych (z), relacje między ilością ścieków a przepływem wody w odbiorniku (Q1/Q270) oraz współczynnik uwzględniający jakość ścieków bytowo-gospodarczych i przemysłowych (kc). Zaletą omówionej metody jest jej kompleksowość oraz możliwość uwzględnienia granicznego natężenia deszczu w szerokim zakresie 5÷20 dm3/s/ha, w zależności od wymogów ochrony odbiornika. Wykazano, że zaproponowana metoda obliczania natężenia deszczu granicznego umożliwia projektowanie i ocenę pracy przelewów burzowych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem liczby i objętości zrzutów, ładunku zanieczyszczeń oraz czasu zrzutów w średnim roku hydrologicznym.
Making use of the results of investigations into storm overflow design (reported for Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom), a complex method of computing critical rain intensity is proposed. The method includes the characteristic flow (Q270) in the recipient, as well as the effect of storm water pollution on the recipient. Consideration is given to the effect of 12 characteristic parameters of storm water discharge (ß, z, Qs, cs, Qp, cp, QB, Q1, Q270, ts, Hz, q15) and the conditions of recipient protection (Categories A, B and C). In the method proposed, the following parameters were found to be of crucial importance: (effect of sludge washed away from the channels), z (pollution from surface runoff), Q1/Q270 (relations between wastewater amount and characteristic water flow in the recipient) and kc (quality of domestic sewage and industrial wastewater). There are two major advantages inherent in this method: its complexity, and the possibility of considering a wide range (5 to 20 dm3/s/ha) of critical rain intensity, according to the pollution control requirements for the recipient. The study has produced the following findings: the proposed method of calculating critical rain intensity allows the design of storm overflows and the assessment of their performance, particular consideration being given to the number and volume of discharge, the load of pollutants, and the time of discharge in an average hydrological year.

The dimensional analysis method was used to estimate the influence of the axial static load on the bottom-hole, angular speed of the drill bit rotation, stiffness, and damping of the drilling tools on the integral indices of well drilling. The mathematical models of the mechanical drilling speed, average values of torque on the bit, and energy consumption for the rock destruction process on the well bottom-hole were developed for two interlayers of the Vorotyshchenska formation with the hardness of 1440 and 2050 MPa.
