Opis:
In the communication process, it is necessary to use specific collocations that language users begin to include in their lexical resources at an early stage of language acquisition. The aim of this study is to investigate the productive collocation competence (i.e. the ability to use collocations that are fixed connections of at least two words with integrated meaning) in preschoolers. The research group consisted of forty five‑year-olds whose mother tongue was Polish, and whose task was to provide fourteen verbal collocations with the lexemes telefon ‘telephone’ and komputer ‘computer/laptop’ based on the situation described to them.

The article considers the phenomenon of consumerism, in particular its objective dimension. The aim of the study was to present objects desired by children, and therefore their desires and hierarchy of values. In this article some letters to St. Nicholas, which were created by the students of 4th, 5th and 6th class of primary school, are analysed. The form of letters is as interesting as their content. It often does not implement the genre pattern, and is similar to a shopping list. Among the coveted items children listed computer games, electronic equipment, as well as objects associated with appearance. These reflections are located on the border between sociolinguistics and cultural anthropology.

The article presents an attempt to develop methods of research showing the impact of multi-dimensional reading on the child’s language. According to the author, a multi-faceted study to measure the impact of reading on child’s language ability and disseminate the results of such studies should be implemented in order to promote reading effectively. It should be pointed out that a modern man in fact pays attention on precise figures as well as quantitative and qualitative methods. The author examined the length of child’s utterance (a number of words), an exact number and the average number of words included in the utterance, frequency and an increase of vocabulary, fluency (a number and types of pauses), repetition of words and phrases, a number of words and unfinished words and a number of elements in texts for children.

Children entering institutional education can activate the linguistic and non-linguistic norms they bring from home. These norms, however, are very diverse in their nature and children from the same age-group remain at different levels in terms of language-acquisition. In our paper we seek to identify where and what sort of problems may arise in acquiring the mother-tongue, what factors may hinder the acquisition of the first language, what are the symptoms of backwardness in the field of linguistic–communication and which areas measuring tests tend to focus upon. Finally by presenting an indication system we would like to show what opportunities observation may have in purposeful development.

Opis:
The following reflections are born from some practical and theoretical trajectories undertook by the writer – already since a few years in my research scope – around philosophy for children/community and philosophical practices. The experience of some activities proposed at the Liceo Vasco/Beccaria/Govone in Mondovì during the Cespec Summer School 2017 around the issue of Humanitas in the contemporary society was recently added to these reflections. It is a theme that engaged us in several experiences of Philosophy for Community. Throughout these gatherings, we proposed a cartographic writing and philosophical approach. In particular, this contribution will explore the concept of children cartography (cartografia d’infanzia), as an occasion of translating the philosophical discourse into a map of a philosophical debate, also mutuating the concept of philosophical confluence considered by Pierpaolo Casarin. The adopted perspective is the transdisciplinary border where human geography, philosophy, and writing, as disciplinary subjects, can confound their identities and boundaries in a space of immanence in the making. Summarizing, we intend to highlight the themes, concepts, and practical propositions around some practical and theoretical research trajectories, current and future, which hold implications for all of us (and for humanity). Such practices allow again – and still – the possibility of orienting and losing oneself thanks to the Humanitas.

The aim of this paper is to present results of critical analyses of Polish children’s songs. Having analysed the lyrics of more than eighty Polish children’s songs, the author couched main categories construing the image of the social world presented in them. The qualitative research revealed propaganda role of the language used in children’s songs: the features of social world (i.e. people, places, relationships, behaviours and values) that are presented in these songs often transmit strongly stereotypical and oversimplified vision of the social reality. In this sense, social education is based on manipulation in which lyrics are the main tool of symbolic violence.

The purpose of the current study was to compare for the first time in Cyprus deaf and hard of hearing (d/hh) children’s written ability with that of adult d/hh persons. One group consisted of young children who were between 12–13 years of age and with congenital hearing losses (mean 80 dB HL in the better hearing ear at .5, 1, 2, 4 kHz), but without additional disabilities, who were attending the last grade of various general high schools in Cyprus (N = 11). They were trained orally in general schools, which they attended exclusively. The comparison group consisted of 11 adult d/hh persons (mean 75 dB HL in the better hearing ear at .5, 1,2, 4 kHz), all of whom were between 41–58 years of age, without any disabilities; they all are signing Deaf and had attended the school for the deaf in Cyprus. All participants were asked to produce written texts on topics of common interest (about everyday life). The analysis of the written texts was both quantitative and qualitative. Regarding the quantitative analysis, the written language was analysed by focusing on a) text content and structure, b) syntax, and c) vocabulary. Qualitative analysis was applied for further elaboration on the characteristics observed in the texts of the sample. This study revealed that d/hh children reached better levels of competence in written Greek compared with adult d/hh people, at least for the investigated aspects. The findings of the study may be of importance for educators and policy makers in Cyprus and elsewhere.

Opis:
Picturebooks (and silent books, with images only and without words) are children’s books commonly considered suitable only for young children of pre-school age or in the earliest years of schooling. For this reason, picturebooks are mostly neglected in teaching in higher educational stages. Nevertheless, the educational potential of picturebooks is considerable, especially in the later years of primary school. For example, in Italian language teaching, they can be extraordinary tools for planning didactic projects that allow instructors to integrate the teaching/learning of all linguistic skills and of metalinguistic reflection, which are the main elements in the curricula related to Italian language teaching in Italian-speaking countries and contexts. The article aims to show the validity of the above claim by establishing a possible classification of picturebooks into six distinct types and by describing some didactic projects and activities developed in primary schools in Canton Ticino (Italian Switzerland). Focusing on the pleasure of reading engaging stories and on motivation, picturebooks enable teachers to pursue ambitious and challenging goals, such as creating one or more new picturebooks inspired by the one read initially or transposing a picturebook into a theatre script. At the same time, picturebooks enable students to develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

Every day a teacher, especially a speech therapist who works with the youngest children, uses a variety of texts that are helpful in improving the child language. Cognitive, therapeutic and educational values (and learning outcomes) presented in A Songbook for Children [Śpiewnik dla dzieci] by Maria Konopnicka multiply educational and therapeutic benefits, which is usually achieved by a set of repeated language and articulation exercises. It should be emphasized that the poet uses a beautiful poetic language that is tailored to the developmental needs of the child. What is more, even in the 21st century Konopnicka’s style of writing should be appreciated as it is so simple that makes a child repeat her songs easily and with pleasure. This is why, frequently repeated sequences of words may contribute to correct pronunciation.

The authors of this article concentrate on the use and role of fairy tales in foreign language teaching to primary school children. They discuss these notions on the basis of scholarly literature and questionnaire responses of 2nd- and 3rd-year students of pedagogy and language studies at Wielkopolska University of Social and Economic Studies in Środa Wielkopolska. Apart from pointing to the necessity of introducing fairy tales in education, particularly foreign language education, they identify and describe in their account a number of tools which can be helpful for the presentation and discussion of content from fairy tales in a foreign language class at the primary school level. They also enumerate a number of effects which children’s work with fairy tales brings and in the end they draw conclusions with regard to the subject in question.

Opis:
In the 1950s the poetry for children involves the elements of language poetry (movement in Polish literature characterized by the domination of linguistic forms over fiction), draws on absurdity, and combines the Interbellum period traditions with the tendencies in literature which began after the events of October 1956. These features are manifested in the works of poets who debuted in the second part of the 1950s, as well as in the poems of prior writers, molded by the pre-war culture and the avantgarde tradition. Books with poetry for children in the late 1950s stimulate imagination and respond to children’s needs to experiment with language, test its flexibility and potential. Also, thanks to the enclosed unique illustrations, the books develop aesthetic sensitivity. Despite the ongoing changes in the outside world, the books haven’t lost their relevance and can successfully be used in teaching.

Our research intends to find selection parameters for children’s literature to be used as a fundamental part of a foreign-language curriculum. We achieve this through an analysis of the educational and cultural-linguistic advantages of this literature. Our project’s goal is to expose our students to Italian literature using their second language, rather than their first one, as a way to convey cultural meaning. This educational project was conducted in 2015, in a school in Chicago that offers classes of Italian Language and Culture to children at various linguistic levels, including the English-Italian bilingual one. Our research paper is divided into three parts. The first part introduces a theoretical excursus on the meaning of children’s literature and on the fable’s structure as a literary genre. The second part presents examples of how a specific text (L’albero delle fiabe by Roberto Piumini) was selected and used during the project; this part also includes our comments based on the observations of the child participants. Finally, the analysis stage describes the generalisation of our data within a framework indicating how to select a literary text, which may be useful for other teachers when deciding which children’s books to use and how to apply them to educational curricula.
