Opis:
The study presents the results of 3-year field tests, the aim of which was to assess the dynamics of initial growth of maize (Zea mays L.) of „stay-green” and classical cultivars characterized by different genetic profile depending on the method of application of nitrogen fertilizer and nitrogen-magnesium fertilizer. The development of annual grain crops, such as maize is divided into a number of development stages, each of which performs a specific role in the life cycle. In the juvenile stage, i.e. from the 6th to the 12th leaf, the maize builds its potential yield structure, because at that time ears are formed and the number of rows in an ear is determined. Understanding the dynamics of initial growth, which is dependent on the selection of cultivars and fertilization, is therefore a very valuable achievement of the study because the yield of maize is closely correlated with the dynamics of the initial growth and nutritional status in the juvenile phase. It was found that band fertilisation, in comparison with broadcast fertilisation and in-row application supplemented with topdressing at the BBCH 15/16 phase, had positive impact on the initial rate of maize growth. The ES Paroli “stay-green” cultivar, in comparison with the traditional ES Palazzo, exhibited faster rate of dry matter increase at the initial stages (BBCH 16/17) of the development. The most significant differences showing the advantages of the “stay-green” cultivars in comparison with the traditional cultivar, as far as the characteristics under examination are concerned, were found with regard to broadcast-applied nitrogen fertiliser. The differences between “stay-green” and conventional cultivars for dry matter weight and for dry matter content per plant were smaller for banded vs. broadcast fertiliser application and were the smallest with banded application supplemented with top- dressing at the BBCH 15/16 stage.

Opis:
The common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale F.H. Wigg) is a perennial plant often found in large concentrations in the sward of natural meadows. This species expands quickly, displacing other species. In literature there is a lack of data relating to the effect of common dandelion on plants growing in its vicinity. It is also not known why this species creates large clusters. Perhaps it competes with different plants through the allelopathic effect. Hence, the aim of this study was to determine the influence of water extracts from leaves and roots of common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) as well as soil extracts from the root layer of this species on seed germination and the initial growth of Lolium westerwoldicum R.Br. The investigated material comprised leaves and roots of Taraxacum officinale. The germination biotest most often used in experiments was applied. The seeds germination energy of westerwolds ryegrass was most inhibited by plant extracts prepared from roots and leaves of Taraxacum officinale. The germination ability of seeds of Lolium westerwoldicum was the highest in the treatments in which soil extracts were applied; however, the value of this feature was limited to a larger extent by the plant extracts from leaves of Taraxacum officinale than from roots. Higher concentrations of both soil and plant solutions had an inhibitory effect both on root growth and the growth of the leaf sheath and leaves of westerwolds ryegrass. The results of the tested parameters can confirm the allelopathic effect of Taraxacum officinale on germination and initial growth of Lolium westerwoldicum, and especially that of extracts prepared from leaves.
W porównaniu do wyciągów glebowych stwierdzono silniejszy hamujący efekt allelopatyczny wyciągów roślinnych, zwłaszcza uzyskanych z liści Taraxacum officinale na początkowy wzrost organów Lolium westerwoldicum. Wyższe użyte stężenia zarówno wyciągów roślinnych, jak i glebowych powodowały hamowanie wzrostu pochewek liściowych, blaszek liściowych i korzeni testowanej rośliny. W odniesieniu do obiektu kontrolnego wszystkie stężenia wyciągów glebowych działały stymulująco na wydłużanie korzeni zarodkowych Lolium westerwoldicum.

Opis:
Inspired by the recent avenues for longitudinal research in second language acquisition (SLA), in this study we aimed to trace changes in language mindsets over time via a curve of factors model. The data were collected from 437 adult English as a foreign language learners’ response to the Language Mindsets Index in four time points. The model fit was accepted and the invariance of the latent factor was attested over time. The findings indicated a negative covariance between the initial level language mindsets and the growth level of the construct. This finding implies that learners with a highly initial level of language mindsets experienced less change in the construct over time and those with a lower level of the construct changed their mindsets more over time. Pedagogical implications of the findings such as language teachers’ consideration of growth language mindsets interventions are discussed.

Opis:
The aim of this research was to characterise the influence of plant spacing on the survival and growth of pines in dry and fresh coniferous forest habitats after almost 40 years since stand establishment. In this study, we compared seven types of spacing, including square, rectangular and triangular configurations, with initial densities ranging from 6944 units/ha to 15 625 units/ha. The research covered two sites where no tending interventions of selective character were performed throughout the growth period. We found that habitat conditions had an influence on tree survival as well as growth in thickness and height in the pine forest stands. In the less fertile habitat, where competition between trees was less intense, about 1,5 to 2 times more trees survived than in the more fertile habitat. Pines growing in the fresh coniferous forest were taller and had substantially larger diameter breast heights (dbh) in comparison to pines of the dry coniferous forest. Additionally, habitat conditions had an influence on the spacing effect correctness of the analysed features. In the poorer habitat this influence was stronger, which showed in a greater differentiation of the analysed parameters as compared to the more fertile habitat. Average dbh values of all trees on the Płock surface increased with decreasing initial density and ranged from 8,24 cm in variant A (15 625 units/ha) to 9,79 cm in variant C (6944 units/ha). On the Łąck surface, trees growing at a lower density (variants C and E) were significantly thicker than trees growing at densities between10 000 units/ha and 15 625 units/ha (spacing variants A, B, F, G). Furthermore, our results showed a significant influence of habitat conditions and plant spacing on the thickness of pines belonging to the 1st biosocial class. Moreover, we found a positive influence of triangular-shaped spacing on the trees' thickness increment in the fresh coniferous forest, which confirms reports from other authors. Hence, we can deduce that triangular spacing enables trees to make better use of their surrounding space which positively impacts on their growth parameters. Based on these results, we can conclude that, in pine forests, there is a significant influence of habitat conditions on tree survival and growth in thickness and height. This study also showed significant differences between the types of plant spacing and their effect on pine shafts in the II age class. However, a relationship between height growth rate and initial density was not observed. In both of the investigated habitats, the highest trees were observed at densities around 11 500 units/ha with triangular spacing enhancing this effect.

Opis:
Tested are three approaches to development of site dependent height age model based on published Scots pine tabular data. The approaches included fitting four−parameter modified Gompertz function individually to all site productivity classes; fitting a one−parameter anamorphic dynamic site index equation to all the data; and fitting a three−parameter polymorphic dynamic site index equation with variable asymptotes to all data. The common fit to all data was based on a base−age invariant approach, in which the site−specific parameters different for each of the site productivity classes are estimated simultaneously with the global model parameters that are common to all site productivities. The best model proved to be based on the polymorphic dynamic equation with variable asymptotes by Cieszewski [2001, Three methods of deriving advanced dynamic site equations demonstrated on Inland Douglas−fir site curves. Can. J. For. Res. 31(1): 165−173], which fitted the data best and provided one common model for all the site classes. The produced model was concluded to be superior to the other models and to the original tables. The presented approach is recommended for modeling of other stand growth attributes.
