Opis:
The aim of this paper is to verify several assumptions concerning genderlects on the basis of an experiment carried out with a group of Polish teenagers. We enquire whether there are any significant differences in the use of diminutives, colour terms, markers of emotional language and verbosity by Polish teenage males and females. The experiment involved 40 16–17 year-old pupils of a senior secondary school, who were asked to respond in writing to the offered stimuli. It has revealed some significant differences in the language of male and female participants in all the examined categories.

Research on the representation of emotion in human memory has focused on the ways in which words that label an emotion (e.g., love, joy) or represent emotional components (e.g., death, butterfly) are learned, stored, and retrieved from memory. The current work reviews the ways in which these types of words have been distinguished from concrete and abstract words, the types of methodologies used to distinguish among word groups, and the ways in which these words are automatically processed in the bilingual speaker. While emotion words may be more readily processed and retrieved when they appear in the first language, other word types that are neutral with regards to arousal and valence may be processed similarly across languages. The current work also illustrates the ways in which this knowledge is important in advancing theories of language and cognition, attention, perception, and mental health. Future directions are discussed that elucidate the further applications of these interesting lines of research.

Opis:
A new type of dictionary – a psychological linguistic dictionary was compiled as a result of analyzing 15918 Russian adjectives from the perspective of their relationship with emotions originating in reference to various senses. The dictionary contains information on “the emotional load” of these adjectives, that is how pleasant or how unpleasant emotions a given adjective evokes. The analyzed lexemes were assessed by respondents on the scale of emotions: slightly (un)pleasant – moderately (un)pleasant – very (un)pleasant, which was marked with an appropriate number of pluses or minuses. Although it is believed that representatives of different cultures experience universal emotions, their quality and intensity hidden behind particular linguistic units can diverge for different cultural linguistic communities. Emotions are conditioned socially, culturally and historically; they play an important role in international communication. Thus, when they are incompetently and mistakenly interpreted, this can disturb dialogue between various cultures and even lead to conflicts. In the article, considering equivalents mięsny/мясной and other counterparts, it can be said that not all the examples have a parallel emotional value. Despite the genealogical relationship between the languages and cultures in question, emotive contrasts are not rare. This leads to considering a significant issue of emotive adequacy of dictionary equivalents, which has to be addressed by translators and language teachers.

The article shows the problem of the importance of emotions as one of the soft competencies. The author bases her reflectionson the thesis that an individual understanding of the emotions experienced by oneself and others may influencethe internal (spiritual) integration of a person as well as the sense of acceptance and belonging to the community. Child’s emotions, due to their primarily pre-interpre-tation of reality, also affect other developmental processes such as perception, memory and attention. The author of the article focuses on the importance of the emotional competence of the child expres-sed in a verbal way. She notes that skilfully used rich dictionary of concepts related to emotions can influencethe subsequent proper functioning in community. Also, citing research, the author states that early emotional education influencesthe development of qualities such as sensitivity, ability to empathize and openness to another person. The combination of language education with emotional, moral and social education becomes the starting point for axiolinguistic education.

Linguistic routines are characteristic for human communication. They give the communication partners a certain security. This allows the producer to take the time to structure the content of the following in an appropriate way. They belong to certain rituals: the recipient has the opportunity to adopt a certain attitude towards what is expected before making a statement. The paper starts from a case that is not that frequently used in contemporary German, but salient, namely „Ehrlich gesagt, ... “, and examines the functions of routine formulas in emotional language / in emotional speaking and also which changes they are subject to.

The bilingualism and the cultural identity of the subjects investigated have been presented as individualized phenomena and as an ongoing lifetime process. Applying the affective criterion, the author has distinguished six types of identity attitudes, the most important of which is the “over‑particularist cultural and national identity”, an attitude not oriented around a specific language or culture, but related to an emotional state or a psychological need predominant in the respondent’s life.

The aim of this study was to gain more in-depth understanding of students’ emotions in an EFL context by applying dynamic assessment (DA) procedures to the development of learners’ emotional intelligence. The study with 50 intermediate learners aged 12-15 used three modalities: a control group, which was taught under institute’s normal procedures; a comparison group, which received DA; and an experimental group, which received emotionalized dynamic assessment (EDA) procedures, in the form of an intervention focusing on emotional characteristics of Goleman's emotional intelligence framework with the express purpose of inducing them to work with their emotions. The study shows the potential of EDA for increasing one’s emotional intelligence and affords practical guidelines to language teachers as to how to incorporate behaviors relating to emotional intelligence into assessment procedures.

This study aims to enhance bilingual language acquisition in very young children in a Portuguese kindergarten. The promotion of children’s language and cognition is done through access to another language – English – in their daily context by incorporating the language into the children’s routines and school daily activities. We collected data from an immersion teacher training program towards bilingualism use, the development of their assistants’ English language fluency, the parents’ awareness and beliefs about English and children’s language development. The sample includes 140 children, aged 5 months to 6 years, teachers and teaching assistants. Teachers have changed their language beliefs concerning English and the program has influenced their practice. The results showed that children develop communicative skills in both languages when surrounded by a bilingual friendly and emotional environment. They use both languages in their everyday life and have created a positive and emotional relationship with the English.

As recipients, patients with right hemisphere brain damage, for instance, interrupt their interlocutor’s utterance, cannot understand jokes, mockeries, or ambiguous messages. The paper describes language and communication defi cits arising from right hemisphere brain damage and cases of patients suffering from right hemisphere disorder. The data obtained in the course of examining people with right hemisphere damage show that the most disturbed aspects of language include: lexical and semantic processing, processing complex language information, discourse, and prosody.

nest (hatred)
Opis:
This paper presents an analysis of the usages of words from the nest (hatred) in the works by Jan Kochanowski against the semantic development of these words in Polish. Their original etymological meaning is related to seeing someone unwillingly, disliking someone. In the Old and Middle Polish periods, they were used fairly often, but the usages were different from the present ones: many of them had a less negative meaning than they do in Modern Polish. It was shaped after the 16th century, yet the beginnings of the process are assumed to go back to the century of the last Jagiellons. The author formulates a hypothesis that Jan Kochanowski, who noticed the trend in the semantics of the words from the nest , restricted their usage in his works only to the translations of the Old Testament psalms, consciously not referring them to the contemporary interpersonal relationships.

Opis:
W artykule podjęto analizę pojęcia tzw. kodu kulturowego, rozumianego jako splot kulturowych i społecznie uwarunkowanych elementów, przez pryzmat których nadajemy (najczęściej nieświadomie) rzeczom i zjawiskom określone znaczenia. Użytkownik języka ojczystego nabywa tenże kod w procesie wychowania i socjalizacji w społeczeństwie, a także naturalnej akwizycji języka pierwszego. Proces opanowania języka obcego podlega jednak dalece większym ograniczeniom, stąd też centralnym problemem tekstu jest zagadnienie ‘wyuczalności’ kodu kulturowego w języku obcym. Mimo, że elementy obcojęzycznego kodu kulturowego wpływają negatywnie na procesy rozumienia i tworzenia znaczeń w języku obcym, mogą zarazem pozytywnie kształtować świadomość kultury ojczystej oraz relacje bikulturowe pomiędzy nią a kulturą obcą.
The article analyses the notion of the so-called cultural code, understood as a complex interweaving of culturally and socially conditioned elements, through the prism of which we give (most often unconsciously) things and phenomena their particular meanings. The native language user acquires this code in the process of upbringing and socialisation in the society and during acquisition of the first language. However, the process of mastering a foreign language is subject to far greater constraints. Hence, the main problem addressed in the text is the issue of ‘learnability’ of the cultural code, which is specific for each language. Although the foreign-language specific elements have a negative impact on the processes of understanding and expressing the intended meanings in the foreign language, they can at the same time positively shape the awareness of native culture as well as the bi-cultural relations between the native and the foreign culture.
