Opis:
Although developmental dyslexia is frequently diagnosed in Poland, little knowledge of effective treatment for this disorder is available in Polish society. Remedial teachers for many years have applied traditional methods aimed at correction and compensation for affected cognitive functions and academic skills. Otherwise, although western therapies are regularly advertised in the media, their effectiveness has rarely been subject to scientific investigation. Since the assumptions underlying some approaches are not consistent with current understanding of cognitive function, they may attract negative expert appraisal. Unfortunately, it seems that fashion in dyslexia therapy is resistant to rare expressions of criticism from the scientific community. The purpose of this article is to promote awareness about effective treatment for specific reading disorders. Teachers’ greater understanding in this area should help Polish dyslexic children and their parents, who may be confused by offers of misguided therapy and sharp business practise. It is hoped that this article will clarify the situation. In this review of modern English journal articles, focus is on remedial teaching of reading, and more specifically, support for dyslexic students experiencing difficulties in decoding. Here we are concerned only with therapy in alphabetic languages in which individual speech sounds correspond to letters. Analysis of articles from the last six years leads to the conclusion that the most effective therapy for the reading disorder is training in phonological awareness and consolidation of letter-sound knowledge. However, these skills should be practised in the context of reading.

An age appropriate, research-based systematic program that teaches a flexible strategy for decoding multisyllabic words may be the foundation for increased reading abilities of middle school male and female students struggling with grade level text. To meet this need, the REWARDS reading program (Archer, Gleason, & Vachon, 2000) was used with struggling 6th grade readers with learning disabilities (LD). The quasi-experimental research design used in this study is non-randomized control group (n = 20), pretest posttest design. The Basic Reading Inventory along with DIBELS measure of reading fluency were the instruments used to calculate findings. In a five week period, students' decoding levels increased by 1.72 grade levels, instructional reading levels increased by 1.45 grade levels, while the reading fluency rates were increased by 28% at instructional reading levels and 17% at grade level. Decoding ability was highly correlated to reading comprehension with the relationship of .88.

The names play a main role in understanding of Miljenko Jergović’s literary works and it is argued through analysis of collection of stories called Inšallah Madona, inšallah. The names have  their history,  they  describe  and  determine actors, and function  as axioms with initial stabile meaning. By decoding of related code, new complex components of semantic field of the name as symbol are revealed to us. In chosen text, the names operate as curse in form of general principle. Through curse as a main motive,  it is implied performative dimension of the  names  which  symbolize  pain  or misery,  evoke  tragedy  and  in  the  end  fulfill  inscribed curse.

The problem of religious profi ling and the increase of animosity, exclusion and maltreatment of Muslim minorities in the West have reached an unprecedented level in a community where racism and segregation are usually denounced. The paper investigates the concept of Islamophobia as presented in 25 selected caricature images, along with their accompanying texts, chosen from magazines and specialized cartoon websites. Multimodality and its related analytic tools are utilized for making explicit the interactive messages encoded within these caricature images. The theoretical framework upon which this study is conducted incorporates Halliday’s (1978) three metafunctions, and Kress and Van Leeuwen’s (1996) adaptation of them for the analysis of images and their captions.

This paper develops a novel approach, dubbed a Mind Story, to the thoughts of writers through decoding the writing and then constructing the deconstructed story into mind. It is beyond the traditional decoding reading for college learners in the curriculum of literature, wherein the interaction between authors and readers is processed as a story, being the most recognizable interface of minds. The principles and proceedings on the construction of mind story are firstly presented and then manifested by the teaching of “Hills Like White Elephants” written by Ernest Miller Hemingway. The differential results show that the construction of ‘Mind Story’ in decoding reading not only gives students interesting aura but also enhances the students’ English abilities throughout the curriculum of literature reading.

The most important skills tested were the abilities to decode academic content. The study show that the student have very poor language skills of decoding the academic content on every level of its complexity. They have also noticable problems with the definition of basic academic terms. The significance of gained results are high because of the innovational topic and character of the study, which was the first such study conducted on students of a Polish university. Results are also valuable for academic teachers who are interested in such problems as efefctive communication with students.

A high-performance polar code introduced as a product polar code can be constructed by concatenating two short length polar codes. The punctured structure of this code was achieved by puncturing one of its constituent codes. The constructed polar code provided better performance than a single polar code in the error floor region. However, its performance in the waterfall region was not as good as that of single polar codes. This paper proposes a new puncturing algorithm for product codes constructed by two identical polar codes. Puncturing is conducted on both constituent codes, to ensure that the new code outperforms the previously punctured product polar and single polar codes. This is evident in both waterfall and error floor regions.

Land degradation, including pasture lands is one of the global problems. Currently, one of the most urgent problems of the West Kazakhstan region is the preservation and restoration of the vegetation cover of pasture lands. To date, large areas of the region have been occupied by agricultural land. Several main reasons negatively affect agriculture, one of which is land degradation associated with anthropogenic impact in terms of the irrationality of land use. Thus, to preserve the biodiversity of the pastures of the West Kazakhstan region, it is necessary to fully study the projective cover of the vegetation, determine the dominant plant species, and also monitor the condition of pastures to prevent land degradation on time by conducting land and forest improvement activities. The study aimed to carry out a phyto-ecological assessment of degraded pastures of the Karatobinsky district of the West Kazakhstan region using geoinformation technologies and field study results. The paper presents the results of desktop decoding of high-resolution satellite images and ecological profiling of the studied territories. Decoding features of landscape types allowed making a preliminary map of landscape contours. The use of this technique makes it possible to monitor the condition of degraded pasture lands in a short time and justify the organization of pastures with a regulated grazing system in the study area.

The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive, theoretical overview of how proverbs are used as a communicative and discursive strategy, taking into account the speaker’s communicative intention. I will pay attention both to the benefits of the use of this type of formulaic sequence in the construction of the speech, and to the illocutionary force and pragmatic implications entailed by these utterances. In order to do so, some considerations will be required – the encoding of the meaning of the proverbs, the decoding process by the addressee, and the way proverbs are inserted in the discourse. This paper inspects the importance of such factors as the need for articulation of fluent speech, the assumption of cultural patterns, the appeal to proverbiality that aligns the speaker with power structures of the community, or the masking of the speaker’s voice behind a collective entity in order to socialize and release tensions related to interpersonal contact.

People use their voices to communicate not only verbally but also emotionally. This article presents theories and methodologies that concern emotional vocalizations at the intersection of psychology and digital signal processing. Specifically, it demonstrates the encoding (production) and decoding (recognition) of emotional sounds, including the review and comparison of strategies in database design, parameterization, and classification. Whereas psychology predominantly focuses on the subjective recognition of emotional vocalizations, digital signal processing relies on automated and thus more objective vocal affect measures. The article aims to compare these two approaches and suggest methods of combining them to achieve a more complex insight into the vocal communication of emotions.

The purpose of this study was to compare the reading speed, phonological decoding, and comprehension between a group of children with anisometropic amblyopia (amblyopic group) (N = 21) and a group without visual problems (control group) (N = 37). Mean (± SD) age in amblyopic group was 10.3 ± 1.7 and 10.7 ± 1.3 years in control group (p = 0.130). The reading speed measurement was conducted with the use of Konopnicki test, phonological decoding and comprehension using the Prolexia tests – string words test and string sentences test. All reading tests were made binocularly with spectacle correction (subjective refraction result). The median (range) of the Konopnicki test in the amblyopic group was 62 words per minute (from 32 to 108), while 92 words per minute (from 51 to 125) in the control group (p < 0.0001). The mean (± SD) of the string words test for amblyopic group was 3 min and 55 s (± 1.68), while in control group it was 2 min and 55 s (± 0.95) (p < 0.0001). Median (range) of the string sentences test for amblyopic group was 4.18 min (from 1.52 to 10.32) and for control group was 2.50 min (from 1.30 to 5.12) (p < 0.0001). This study indicates that children with anisometropic amblyopia achieve significantly worse results in reading speed, phonological decoding, and comprehension.

High-level languages (HLL) for defining hardware implementation are important in both academic and commercial research. Impulse C could be an example of such language. This environment provides a programming model and library of functions for parallel applications, targeting FPGA-based platforms with the ability to partition the algorithm between software and hardware. This article’saim is to briefly describe DVCPRO HD, one of the intra-frame video-coding algorithms widely used in consumer equipment. DVCPRO HD is a DCT -based lossy video coding algorithm which uses variable-length coding (VLC) and runlength encoding (RLE) to achieve a 5:1 compression ratio. This paper presents DVCPRO HD video-coding-standard principles as well as decoder implementation working in real-time, compliant with the afore-mentioned standard and implemented in Impulse C. According to the authors’ knowledge, the presented solution is the first FPGA implementation of this coding standard which includes all three VLC stages of data re-arrangement. What is more, this is the first DVCPRO HD implementation which utilizes Impulse C.

As android robots become increasingly sophisticated in their technical as well as artistic design, their non-verbal expressiveness is getting closer to that of real humans. Accordingly, this paper presents results of two online surveys designed to evaluate a female android’s facial display of five basic emotions. Being interested in intercultural differences we prepared both surveys in English, German, as well as Japanese language, and we not only found that in general our design of the emotional expressions “fearful” and “surprised” were often confused, but also that Japanese participants more often confused “angry” with “sad” than the German and English participants. Although facial displays of the same emotions portrayed by the model person of Geminoid F achieved higher recognition rates overall, portraying fearful has been similarly difficult for her. Finally, from the analysis of free responses that the participants were invited to give, a number of interesting further conclusions are drawn that help to clarify the question of how intercultural differences impact on the interpretation of facial displays of an android’s emotions.

The primary intention of the presented paper is to contribute to the understanding of 1. what deductive-hypothetical reasoning is and 2. what deductive inference is, manifested in the ability to decode and learn words from context. The WCT - WORD CONTEXT TEST (D-KEFS; Delis, Kaplan & Kramer, 2001) was used for measuring the two dependent variables (level of hypothetical thinking and ability to infer the meaning of words from context). This test is a separate part of the Delis Kaplan Executive Function System test battery (D-KEFS; Delis, Kaplan & Kramer, 2001). On the basis of the results obtained in the process of the administration of the tool on a sample of 9–10 year-old pupils attending standard schools and pupils educated in classes for the gifted, we explore the level of hypothetical-deductive thinking in both groups of pupils. We use the obtained data to make the following analysis of the relationship between a pupil’s intelligence and: a) level of hypothetical reasoning; and b) level of ability to infer the meaning of words from context among standard pupils; analysis of differences in: a) level of hypothetical reasoning; and b) level of ability to infer the meaning of words in context between gifted pupils and standard pupils.
