    In the article the writers present possible ways of theoretising the process of coming out placing it in the course of changes which were faced by the phenomenon of homosexuality (medicalisation, decriminalisation, strategy of building the minority visibility, HIV/AIDS crisis and queer policy). Coming out is presented as a series of speech acts during which the homosexuality is revealed, which is referred to by the reference books as a risky, but payable turning point in an individual biography. In this meaning of coming out the role of interpellations understood as so call for disclosure is examined. Another meaning of coming out is connected with building a strategy of the visibility of a minority social movement (defining sexual identity). The last of these meanings refers to new “frames of visibility”, where the homosexual community became known through AIDS.

    Celem pracy jest przybliżenie amerykańskich badań dotyczących generatywności wśród gejów jako inspiracji do badań własnych autorki (analiza narracji gejów). Punktem wyjścia jest prezentacja teorii generatywności amerykańskiego psychologa D. Mc Adamsa, która jest twórczym rozwinięciem myśli E. Eriksona. Generatywność przejawia się w ciągu całego życia jednostki, jednak jej znaczenie znacząco rośnie po 40. roku życia, zwanym niekiedy okresem „przełomu” bądź „kryzysu”. Najogólniej generatywność wiązana jest z chęcią wspierania przyszłych pokoleń, najczęściej zaś z rodzicielstwem. Amerykańscy badacze , m.in. Hostetler i Boxer zwracają jednak uwagę na to, że nie można generatywności ograniczać wyłącznie do rodzicielstwa, czego dowody znajdują w badaniach prowadzonych wśród gejów. Czynniki mogące wpływać na ekspresję generatywności to m.in. coming out oraz doświadczanie dyskryminacji ze względu na orientację seksualną. Wnioski z badań amerykańskich stały się dla autorki niniejszej pracy inspiracją do postawienia pytań o przejawy generatywności polskich gejów i możliwości jej badania.
    The aim of this article is to present American research on generativity among gays as an inspiration for the author’s own research (analysis of gays’ narrations). The starting point is a presentation of generativity theory stated by American psychologist D. McAdams which is a creative development of E. Erikson’s ideas. Generativity manifests throughout the whole life of a human being, but its role increases significantly after turning fourty. This period is sometimes called a period of “breakthrough” or “crisis”. Generally, generativity is linked to the willingness to support succeeding generations, and most often – to parenthood. According to American scientists, among others Hostetler and Boxer, generativity cannot be limited merely to parenthood. They claim that proofs of this theory can be found in research conducted among gays. Among factors which might affect expression of generativity they enumerate coming-out and experiencing discrimination connected to sexual orientation. For the author of this article, conclusions of the American research became the inspiration to ask a few questions about signs of Polish gays’ generativity and chances to research it.

    W artykule prezentowane są wyniki badań fenomenograficznych poświęconych znaczeniom coming out (ujawnieniu) konstruowanym przez homoseksualnych mężczyzn. Autorzy poddają dyskusji kategorię inności, która opisuje codzienne doświadczenie homoseksualnych mężczyzn oraz problem ich seksualnych tożsamości – niestabilnych i zmiennych. Ważną częścią artykułu jest problem pedagogicznych narzędzi i strategii używanych przez rodziny, które konfrontują się z homoseksualnością.
    This article is concerned with results of phenomenographic study in which the meanings of coming out constructed by homosexual males are identified. Authors discuss the issue of otherness as a category that describes the self-experience of gays as well as the problem of their constructed sexual identity as unstable and changeable. An important part of the article is the problem of pedagogical tools and strategies used by family members when confronting the homosexual identity.

    This article proposes a more inclusive approach to the concept of gender, identity, and non-normativity. Gender is often used in research as a binary category, leading researchers to misrepresent the more complex reality. Taking a more inclusive perspective on how people differ in terms of their body and body perceptions and accepting gender as a fuzzy category make research in linguistics more inclusive in terms of the communities we study and the methodologies we use. Queer Cognitive Linguistics (QCL) proposes a non-reductive approach to language and cognition, recognising the complexity of the human conceptual system. QCL treats universality in human cognition with caution and posits, after Embodied Sociolinguistics, the two-way embodiment, where the interactions between body and language are both bidirectional and intertwined.

    The article is an analyze of non-heteronormative female teachers experience of their work place. It shows both their personal experience of exclusion (or inclusion) and understanding of that experience. Results are based on qualitative research (life-history interviews) with 8 teachers, analyze of internet phorum and also comparison with other European and American data. There are not a lot of research about such topic, not just in Poland but also in other countries, most of the European articles on this topic is based on qualitative research with few teachers. Results of such research should be presented and also should be an inspiration to other wider analyzes. Results of the research show that the majority of responders has never came out in their work place. They were afraid of discrimination and homophobia. The fear which was the reason of keeping in secret the information about sexual orientation was presented mainly among the teachers who were working in villages and small towns. Just on of my responders hasn’t ever heard any homophobic jokes or comments in her workplace. A lot of teachers indicated that ‘being in the closet’ is not comfortable for them because they have to hide a lot of information connected with their daily life and it separates them from the group of collegues. Most of them have founf one or two collegues and told them about their secret. Most of nonheteronormative teachers have good relations with pupils and these teachers connect their open attitude toward pupils problems with their personal experience of exclusion.

    Qualitative researchers have begun to analyze narratives of individuals’ experiences with coming out in order to explore the social influences that affect these processes. However, most studies on coming out are based on the assumption that “coming out” has a singular shared meaning. The present study is centered on challenging this very assumption by taking a constructivist grounded theory approach to exploring the meaning of coming out for 30 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) individuals via open-ended interviews. Coming out does not have a universal meaning among LGBQ persons; rather, it varies on the basis of individuals’ experiences, social environment, and personal beliefs and values. All 30 participants in the current study agree that coming out is a transformative process and an important element in identity formation and maintenance, thus challenging the notion that coming out is no longer a relevant concept. For some participants coming out is more of a personal journey of self-affirmation, while for others it is about the sharing of their sexuality with others – and oftentimes a combination of these two characteristics. Implications for future research on coming out are included.

    The article examines how Maria Reimann’s autoethnographic book Nie przywitam się z państwem na ulicy: szkic o doświadczeniu niepełnosprawności (I Won’t Greet You in the Street: A Sketch about the Experience of Disability, 2019) addresses and problematizes such essential concepts for contemporary disability studies as: disability identity, coming out as disabled and, most importantly, disability community. It focuses on the way in which the book seeks to reconcile the seemingly contradictory and conflicting ideas about disability. It also argues that by deconstructing the disabled/non-disabled dichotomy, Reimann reinvents the idea of disability community, imagining it as a galaxy of individuals who can only find a sense of connection by recognizing the uniqueness and distinctiveness of another’s bodily and social experiences.

    This paper aims to reconstruct the biographical work (Corbin and Strauss) undertaken by parents of non-normative people. The initiating event of biographical work is the disclosure of a non-normative sexual orientation and/or gender identity by the child. For many parents, this is an event that causes a breakdown of previous schemes of action, a gradual loss of control, and suffering. The empirical data consist of autobiographical narratives of parents of people with non-normative sexual orientation and/or gender identity. The study involved mothers and fathers residing throughout Poland, who were selected according to the snowball procedure. The data were collected through the narrative interview technique and compiled according to the analytical procedure proposed by Fritz Schütze, which is part of the interpretative research paradigm. In the course of four parallel biographical processes (contextualizing, coming to terms, reconstituting identity, and recasting biography), the new experience is integrated into the biography, its consequences are understood and accepted, a coherent identity is reconstituted and a new course for one’s life are charted. The analysis of the narrators’ biographical work has made it possible to identify three categories that organize the course of the parents’ lives and identities—stigma, normalization, and activism.

    Artykuł prezentuje analizę genologiczną ważnego społecznie tekstu – wywiadu Anny Dziewit-Meller z Janiną Bąk pod tytułem „58 blizn”. W tym konkretnym tekście autorka odnalazła dwa moduły interakcyjne: wywiad jako intymne wyznanie (perspektywa upublicznienia prywatności, coming out) oraz wywiad – jako społeczny manifest. Te dwie splatające się perspektywy zostały rozpoznane na poziomie gatunkowych aspektów: struktury, miejsc strategicznych, przywołanego tematu choroby psychicznej oraz celu wywiadu. Na poziomie pragmatycznym analiza wypowiedzi dziennikarki i bohaterki wywiadu świadczą o świadomości gatunkowej, o świadomości publicznego odbioru tekstu. Kompozycyjne połączenie intymnego wyznania z publicystycznym, społecznym wymiarem ma wyraźny edukacyjny charakter, ma wręcz funkcję społecznej interwencji. Analizowany wywiad jest także realizacją dyskursu. Stanowi bowiem ważny ślad dyskursu o wykluczeniu, chorobie, ujawnieniu intymności. Jednocześnie jego społeczny kontekst wyraża się w umiejętności definiowania własnej tożsamości, nazywania trudnych doświadczeń ze świadomością „publicznego” funkcjonowania w świecie mediów.
    This article presents a text genre analysis of a socially significant text: an interview by Anna Dziewit-Meller with Janina Bąk, entitled “58 blizn” (58 scars). This text features two interactional modules: the interview as an intimate statement (making privacy public, coming out) and the interview as a social manifesto. These two intertwined perspectives are represented at the level of the text genre: structure, strategic points, the discussed topic of mental disorder, and the purpose of the interview. At the pragmatic level, the analysis of the statements made by the journalist and the interviewee of the text testifies to their being aware that the interview is a genre intended for public reception. The compositional combination of an intimate testimony with a journalistic, interventionist and social dimension has a clear educational character, and can even serve as a social intervention itself. The analysed text, as far as its genre is concerned, also has a discursive dimension. It is an evident manifestation of the discourse on exclusion, illness, and the disclosure of intimacy. At the same time, its social context is expressed through the ability to define one’s own identity, to speak openly about difficult experiences with the awareness of “being public” when functioning in the world of the media.
