The article reconstructs selected problems of critical and publicistic discussion around Artur Domosławski’s book Kapuściński non-fiction concerning the status of the biographical narrative, the role and duties of the biographer and the limits of biographical disclosures. The themes discussed in this sketch made it possible to indicate current issues related to workshop deficiencies and duties of the contemporary biographer, including the exposition of issues related to modernity, subjectivity and ethics of biographical undertakings.

In the article, the inventory of Antoni Malczewski’s belongings, the author of the romantic poem Maria, is published. The document was found in the archive of Jan Feliks Wilski, a nineteenth-century Varsovian notary. The only time the document was sourced was in the biography of Malczewski by Władysław Kazimierz Wójcicki in 1854 (1855). Besides presenting the document, the author collates the rediscovered list with a reading by the nineteenth-century biographer.

The article was dedicated to professor Hanna Tadeusiewicz, a scientist from Lodz. Her scientific, didactical and organizational activities are connected with the University of Lodz. Her activities were focused on a particular field which was the workshop of the Dictionary of the Polish Book Labourers where she was a co-organizer and continuator. She also transferred her experience in biographical studies to Kalisz Society of Friends of Sciences. The article discusses the Professor's achievements in the field of biography studies. It puts a particular emphasis on the researcher's merits in the field of book studies.

Starting from the contemporary trends in biography and referring to findings in the field of anthropology of writing and new materialism, the author analyzes poetic forms created in painting studios. She considers the works of O. Boznańska, W. Weiss and T. Tchórzewski as poetic manifestations of the literary practice of everyday life, a type of poeticised documents. The presence of poetry in artists’ lives is multi-faceted: loose pages preserved in a scrapbook, entries in a journal and autonomous works printed in the press, hence their role in creative biography is different. The common ground is a syncretic perception of creativity; the preserved texts co-create a kind of artistic site where the boundaries between the publication, the exhibition and the project performance blur, requiring special editing operations.

Artykuł omawia najważniejsze uwarunkowania przemian dwudziestowiecznej biografistyki, stawiając sobie za cel ukazanie ograniczeń i nowych ścieżek biografii, w odniesieniu do trzech obszarów: praktyki literackiej (na przykładzie Virginii Woolf i Juliana Barnesa), dydaktyki akademickiej (na przykładzie doświadczenia autorki tekstu) oraz jednej z klasycznych prac z zakresu biografistyki w literaturoznawstwie polskim: Zagadnień biografii literackiej Marii Jasińskiej z 1970 roku, która bliska jest refleksjom Philippe’a Lejeune’a na temat biograficznego paktu referencjalnego. Biografistyka, będąca od początku swojej historii dyskursem hybrydycznym, łączącym literackość, dokumentarność i (popularno)naukowość, w wieku dwudziestym z jednej strony rozwinęła się na skalę dotąd nieznaną (tendencja ta jest podtrzymana i w obiegu akademickim i popularnonaukowym; powstał też odrębny gatunek reportażu biograficznego), z drugiej strony stała się przedmiotem zainteresowania modernistycznych i postmodernistycznych twórców, traktujących konwencje i tradycje biografii jako asumpt do pytań o jej filozoficzne inklinacje.
The article discusses the most important factors behind transformations in the twentieth-century study of biography, setting as its aim demonstrating the limits on and new paths for biography in relation to three areas: literary practice (working with the examples of Virginia Woolf and Julian Barnes), university pedagogical practice (using the example of the author’s experience), and one of the classic works in the area of the study of biography in Polish literary studies: Maria Jasińska’s 1970 book Zagadnienia biografii literackiej (Problems in Literary Biography), which touches on common ground with the work of Philipp Lejeuene on the biographical “referential pact.” Biography, having been since its inception a hybrid discourse, joining together literariness, a documentary aspect, and a (popular-) scholarly aspect developed in the twentieth century on an unprecedented scale (this tendency is sustained in academic and popular-scientific discourse; the separate genre of biographical reportage also emerged), while the topic also became a focus of interest among modern and postmodern writers who treated the conventions and traditions of biography as pretexts for questions about its philosophical direction.

The article discusses the issue of the so-called “new biography” by underscoring ambiguity of the term and presenting the different variants of “new biography” it encompasses. In order to do that, an introduction is made where the tenets of  the classical biography are outlined. The inquiry focuses chiefly on England and the USA, although remarks are also made with respect to biographical writing in other countries. It appears that the term is contemporarily mainly associated with Lytton Strachey’s model of biography which, having been formulated in 1918, proved  a breakthrough in life writing, since it operated with ironic detachment from the protagonist. Strachey perceived biography as an art and was determined to speak openly about all spheres of the biographee’s life. The article proves that although other  attempts at creating a “new biography” were made after Strachey (by Leon Edel and Jo Burr Margadant), their newness is either derivative and supplementary to Strachey’s achievement, or advances a wholly new notion of biography, with the concept of multiplicity of the protagonist’s self. As the Stracheyan biographical model is almost a century old, one can assume that what is understood as “new biography” is not  so new after all. In the meantime, though, biographical practice has taken a turn and  a novelistic mode of writing, i.e. biofiction, has become the current paradigm. The author therefore suggests that the present-day understanding of “new biography” be reconsidered by recognizing biofiction as one of the figures of biographical “newness”.

The author attempts to reconstruct a short history of modern Polish literary studies not from the perspective of schools or methodological orientations that are usually applied, but from the perspective of what is known in sociology as cultural themes. This point of view offers the opportunity to (re)construct the process of continuity /discontinuity in the whole field of research focused on the problem of reference, which has been recognized as the most important one in Polish studies (as well as in Polish literature, and art) since its beginning in the first decade of the 20th century. In the broader scope the article attempts to rearticulate the definition of the discipline conventionally called “the theory of literature”, and to propose a new way of writing its history.

This article aims to expand information on the life and academic career of a historian from Łódź, the co-founder of Polish post-war Byzantine studies – Halina Evert-Kappesowa. Based on student files preserved at the University of Warsaw, as well as employee and promotion records in the Archives of the University of Łódź, the author has established facts such as the date and place of Kappesowa’s birthday, subsequent stages of education and reasons for her delayed promotions. She has also addressed Evert-Kappesowa’s achievements and their reception. This paper provides vital additions to the debate on the contribution of female historians to the development of Polish history. The text consists of two parts; the first is devoted to the biography of the heroine and her research interests. The second concerns the course of her scientific career.

This article concerns the book Prus. Śledztwo biograficzne [Prus. A biographical investigation] by Monika Piątkowska, a new biography of the nineteenth-century writer that enjoys great readership. However, it contains many superficial interpretations and simplifying applications. Piątkowska argues that in his stories and novels, Bolesław Prus included many autobiographical elements. This interpretation key fails. The schematic depiction of the psychological layer of literary works, the lack of references to previous studies of the work and life of Prus, disregarding the intellectual dimension of his biography – these are the most significant drawbacks of this book. The author of the review shows examples of the researcher’s simplifications and lack of competence.

Autorka bada związek gender i (auto)biografii. Asumptem do rozważań jest ukazanie się Encyklopedii gender. Płeć w kulturze – pierwszej tego typu publikacji w języku polskim, która w formie haseł prezentuje terminologię i metodologię gender studies w różnych dziedzinach nauki. W artykule kategorię (auto)biografizmu potraktowano w kontekście, który wykracza poza literaturoznawstwo - encyklopedia bowiem jest wydawnictwem interdyscyplinarnym, sięgającym także do kulturoznawstwa, socjologii, historii, antropologii i medycyny. Autorka zwraca uwagę na tożsamość (także jako konstrukt społeczno-kulturowy), która jest elementem biografii. Wskazywane przez autorkę tropy (auto)biograficzne w hasłach encyklopedycznych potwierdzają fakt, że kategoria gender ma wpisaną w siebie autobiograficzność.
The author of the article explores the connection between gender and (auto)biography. The release of the Encyklopedia gender. Płeć w kulturze [Encyclopedia Of Gender. Gender In Culture] is the ocassion for reflections on the subject. It is the first publication of its kind issued in Polish language. It presents in the form of entries the terminology and methodology of gender studies in various fields of science. In the article the (auto)biographical category is treated in a context which goes beyond literature. The encyclopedia is an interdisciplinary publication, spanning from cultural studies, sociology, history to anthropology and medicine. The author draws attention to the identity (also as a socio-cultural construct) which is an element of the biography. The author indicates (auto)biographical traces in the encyclopedia's entries in order to confirm the fact that the category of gender has autobiography inscribed in it.

The article presents Dimitar Dobrev’s perspectives on the literary work of Wilhelm Mach and his understanding of his friendship with the Polish author. The arguments are mainly based on forgotten materials documenting the relationship between Dobrev and Mach. The most interesting aspects of the friendship between the writers are those causing conflicts and misunderstandings. The authors disagree over the definition of realism and the role of literature in the contemporary world, and those differences are intensified by Dobrev’s and Mach’s opposite comprehension of the ideals of a socialist society. The paper’s main topic is how the discrepancies between Mach and Dobrev influence their style and – particularly in Mach’s case – how they affect his experimental prose. The disagreements between the writers are both frustrating and inspiring for them as authors and they also distort the perception of Mach’s work as presented for his Bulgarian readers in Dobrev’s essays.

Autorka artykułu skupia się na biografii i prozie Włodzimierza Odojewskiego – jednego z najważniejszych współczesnych polskich pisarzy. Od 2008 jego spuścizna literacka jest gromadzona na Wydziale Filologii Polskiej i Klasycznej Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu. Celem pracy jest wskazanie, jak zbiór archiwalny może być wykorzystany w dydaktyce na różnych etapach kształcenia. Tekst stanowi również swego rodzaju propozycję dla nauczycieli, jak zaznajomić uczniów i studentów z twórczością Odojewskiego. Część pierwsza pokazuje dokumenty archiwalne (rękopisy, maszynopisy, korespondencję powstałe w różnych etapach życia pisarza) jako źródło wiedzy o biografii autora i dziejach jego twórczości, jak również przybliża pracę archiwisty. Druga część przedstawia znaczące dla Odojewskiego miejsca w Wielkopolsce, opisane w jego opowiadaniach, które stanowią indywidualne zapisy pamięci zachowane w tekstach literackich.  
The author of the article focuses on the biography and prose of Włodzimierz Odojewski – one of the most important contemporary Polish writers. Since 2008, his literary archive has been collected at the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. The aim of the work is to indicate how archival collection can be used in the didactic work at various stages of education. The text is, as well, a kind of proposal for teachers how to familiarize students with Odojewski’s work. First part of the article shows the documents (manuscripts, typescripts, correspondence related to stages of writer’s life cycle) as a source of knowledge about the author’s life and history of his literary output, and also describes some of the archivist’s tasks. The second outlines the places in Greater Poland significant for the writer – Poznań and Kłecko, described in his short stories. These stories are examples of individual memory saved in literary texts.

Opis:
Ważnym etapem w rozwoju umysłowym Zofii Izabeli Łuszczkiewicz były jej studia uniwersyteckie. Zgodnie z tradycją rodzinną odbyła je na uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim. Studiowała tam w latach 1917/18-1921/22. W okresie tym kobiety miały już na krakowskiej uczelni dość ugruntowaną pozycję chociaż nie zostały całkowicie zrównane w prawach w mężczyznami. Pierwsze trzy studentki pojawiły się w Krakowie w r. 1894, na Wydział filozoficzny zostały formalnie dopuszczone w r. 1897 na lekarski w r. 1900 natomiast na prawo dopiero w r. 1900. Zofia Łuszczkiewicz studiowała na Wydziale Filozoficznym nauki chemiczne. Uczęszczała na wykłady i ćwiczenia wybitnych uczonych takich jak Karola Dziewońskiego profesora chemii organicznej, Tadeusza Estreichera kierownika katedry chemii nieorganicznej i analitycznej wybitnego erudyty i popularyzatora wiedzy ora Bohdana Szyszkowskiego specjalisty z zakresu termodynamiki. Poza zajęciami z wybranego kierunku studiów uzupełniała wiedzę w zakresie biologii na wykładach Władysława Szafera, fizyki i u Władysława Natansona a także na prelekcjach z filozofii prowadzonych przez Witolda Rubczyńskiego i Władysława Heinricha. Uzyskała zaliczenia ze wszystkich obowiązujących przedmiotów otrzymując w dn 4 X 1922 absolutorium. Na uczelni krakowskiej zdobyła rzetelną wiedzę a także uczestniczyła w działalności społecznej (Koło Chemików) i miała możliwość pogłębienia religijności w Sodalicji Mariańskiej.
University studies, conducted in accordance with the family tradition at the Jagiel-lonian University, in the years 1917/18-1921/22, were an important stage in the intel-lectual development of Zofia Izabella Łuszczkiewicz. In this period, the position of women at the University was quite well-established, although their rights were not yet equal to those of men. The first three female students appeared in Cracow in 1894, they were formally accepted by the Faculty of Philosophy in 1897, by the Faculty of Medicine in 1900, while by the Faculty of Law only in 1900. Zofia Łuszczkiewicz studied chemical sciences at the Faculty of Philosophy. She attended lectures and classes of outstanding scientists such as Karol Dziewoński, professor of organic chemistry, Tadeusz Estreicher, the head of the department of inorganic and analytical chemistry, a distinguished erudite and science populariser and Bohdan Szyszkowski, a specialist in thermodynamics. Apart from classes in the chosen branch of studies, she supplemented her knowledge in biology at the lectures of Władysław Szafer, in physics at the lectures of Władysław Natanson as well as philosophical lectures of Witold Rubczyński and Władysław Heinrich. She received her credits from all com-pulsory subjects and graduated on October 4, 1922. At the Jagiellonian University, she gained solid knowledge, participated in social activity (Chemistry Circle) and had a possibility to develop her religiosity in Marian Sodality.
