    The article addresses the issue of badania artystyczne (BA; literal translation: artistic research) in the field of performing arts, with a particular emphasis on movement, dance, and choreographic practices, and set in the Polish context. The authors aim to identify and describe examples of artistic research processes in the field defined above; to explore the specificity of BA practices and the contexts in which they are realized; to share tools, methods, and knowledge about them at the level of the BA practices themselves and of studies on BA. The paper is divided into five parts: 1) a definition of artistic research; 2) an auto-choreo-ethnographic reflection; 3) a spider-map of BA practices; 4) an in-depth analysis of three artistic research processes (I: Przyszłość Materii (The Future of Matter) by Magdalena Ptasznik; II: Badanie/Produkcja (Research/Production) curated by Maria Stokłosa; III: a continuum of practices by Ania Nowak); 5) ‘interlacing’ – a cross-sectional reflection. The structure of the narrative is based on two orders: a) a textual order – the main axis of the article; b) a graphics-mapping order – a complementary collection of visual-textual materials presented on the Research Catalogue platform.

    The main goal of the paper is the explanation and empowerment of understanding methodology as an emergent, dynamic field of scientific knowledge about current research methods applied, constructed and re-constructed, following global socio-cultural changes. The author emphasises dialectic relations between normativity and descriptivity in methodological research, using the figure of scientific legitimization and proposing its three types: “finish”, “ascend” and “departure”. Various arguments are presented on the basis of nature, history and current practice of three research traditions: action research, arts-based research, and autoethnography.

    Photography emerging from the documentary tradition has continued to evolve over the recent years, nearing the scientific practices applied in the study of the social and community-based dimensions of culture. Photographers conduct experiments in the social space, reflect on the interactions and dependencies that they intentionally create, and construct languages of communication subordinated to the interpersonal relationships in which they operate. As authors of their art-based research, they are in charge of both methodology of analysis (by adapting the tools employed by the humanities and social sciences) and the ways in which their results are presented and included in the social mainstream as artistic interventions, collective practices, and photography publications. Given that the latter are the subject of this article, it focuses on three selected publications and identifies engagement as a central category for methods used by artists to establish a relationship with the studied social reality, influence it, and create knowledge about it. Engagement, in both its versions – as an attempt to have an impact on the studied social reality and as a method of intentional relationship building within a community, carries a significant learning potential, allowing us to look anew at the role of photography in qualitative social research.

    The subject of the article is the activity of female art groups, especially their development and dynamics, described in a form of distinct stages. The number of such groups is growing together with changes of women’s position in society and allowing of their activity in art. This analysis belongs to research on environmental aspect of creativity. The article bases on qualitative research - free-form interviews - with representatives of four fine-art groups based in Łódź. Artists belong to different generations. The aim of the research was the reconstruction of experiences and meanings that are attributed to activity in such groups. The patterns of development of female art groups were described on the basis of 18 women’s statements representing various fields of fine arts; and, additionally, analysis of existing documents. On this basis the stages of long-standing activity of such groups and the dominance of artists’ activity were distinguished. Certain stages can be distinguished also during single art enterprise, like exhibition.
    Przedmiotem artykułu jest działalność żeńskich grup artystycznych, w szczególności ich rozwój i dynamika, ujęte w formie wyraźnie zarysowujących się etapów. Analiza działalności takich grup, których liczba wzrasta wraz ze zmianami pozycji kobiet w społeczeństwie i pełnym dopuszczeniem ich do aktywności w sztuce, wpisuje się w badanie środowiskowego aspektu twórczości. Dla potrzeb artykułu przeprowadzono badania jakościowe techniką wywiadów swobodnych z przedstawicielkami czterech grup artystycznych reprezentujących sztuki plastyczne, działających w Łodzi. Badane reprezentują różne pokolenia. Celem badań była rekonstrukcja doświadczeń i znaczeń, jakie profesjonalne artystki przypisują funkcjonowaniu w takich grupach. Na podstawie wypowiedzi 18 kobiet, reprezentujących różne dziedziny sztuk wizualnych (i dodatkowo na podstawie analizy dokumentów zastanych), możliwe okazało się dostrzeżenie prawidłowości rozwojowych kobiecych grup artystycznych. Na tej podstawie wyróżniono etapy w wieloletniej działalności grup oraz cechującą je dominantę aktywności artystek. Określone etapy zarysowują się także w realizacji pojedynczego zadania artystycznego, np. wystawy.

    Celem pracy było porównanie dawnych i współczesnych wyrobów złotniczych w oparciu o stosowane stopy i technologie. Wzorując się na dawnych zabytkach z wykorzystaniem tradycji i nowoczesnej technologii powstała odlewana biżuteria. Dawny twórca zajmujący się wyrobem ozdób musiał nie tylko dobrze opanować techniki złotnicze, w tym odlewnicze, ale także posiadać wiedzę o własnościach surowca. Istotna była podatność metalu do obróbki umożliwiającej podkreślenie dekoracyjnych i plastycznych walorów materiału. Dlatego też w produkcji ozdób częściej niż czyste metale stosowano ich stopy, które wykazywały lepsze właściwości technologiczne. Istotnym, zatem elementem pracy jest poznanie technologii tworzenia elementów złotniczych i porównanie ich z metodami wykorzystywanymi współcześnie a także wykonanie projektu własnej biżuterii i jego realizacja z wykorzystaniem tradycyjnej i nowoczesnej technologii wspomaganej komputerowo. Inspiracją oraz źródłem wiedzy stały się głównie zabytki pochodzące z wykopalisk Rynku Głównego, pozyskane przy współpracy Wydziału Odlewnictwa Akademii Górniczo-Hutniczej z Zespołem Badań Rynku Głównego w Krakowie. Praca ma charakter badawczy i zarazem twórczy. Przedstawia autorskie prace projektowe, prowadzące do wykonania pierścienia przy wykorzystaniu tradycyjnych technologii odlewniczych, w tym metody traconego wosku. Wykonano analizy składu chemicznego metodą spektroskopii fluorescencji rentgenowskiej i obserwacje makroskopowe wybranych zabytkowych pierścionków ze stopów miedzi. Wzory, począwszy od XI wieku, a skończywszy na czasach współczesnych, stały się źródłem wiedzy o starym jubilerstwie oraz początkiem do stworzenia nowej kolekcji. W pracy opisano kolejno etapy wykonania formy ceramicznej opartej na spoiwie koloidalnym i wysokoogniotrwałej osnowie ceramicznej. Praca ta ma szanse stanowić nowe źródło informacji i inspiracji do badań z zakresu rzemiosła artystycznego.
    The research aimed at the comparison of the old and modern jewellery and goldsmith's articles, based on the alloys and technologies used. The jewellery was cast taking the historical artefacts as models, using the old traditions and technologies. The jewellery manufacturer of old, not only had to master the jewellery-making technologies including casting, but also he had to have the knowledge concerning his raw material. An important aspect of it were the metal working properties showing off the decorative and plastic scope of the material. That is why, for ornament production, alloys were used more often than pure metals, because they had better technological properties. It is an important aspect of work then, to get to know the technology of creating gold elements and comparing them with the methods used nowadays, and also preparing our own jewellery project and implementing it, with the help of both traditional and computer-aided modern technology. The inspiration and knowledge came mainly from the historical artefacts coming from excavations at the Market Square in Krakow; the finds were obtained through the cooperation of the Foundry Faculty of AGH, the University of Science and Technology with the Research Team for The Main Market in Krakow. This is both research as well as a creative project. It presents original projects, leading to actual manufacturing of a ring, with the help of traditional foundry technologies, including the lost-wax casting method. The chemical content was analysed with the help of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and macroscopic observations of chosen rings made from copper alloys. Also macroscopic observations of other artefacts were conducted. Historical patterns of ornaments, starting form the 11th century up to the present times, have become the source material about the 'old' jewellery making and the starting point for creating a 'new' collection. The work describes consecutive stages of creating a ceramic mould, and it can become the source material for information and research concerning the artistic craftsmanship field.
