Opis:
In this paper the method of creating indices for description leaf blade roundness and asymmetry, based on division of the leaf into 10 equal parts perpendicularly to the long axis was proposed. Along each division line the distance between the midrib and the leaf edge was measured separately for the left and right site of the blade. Sum of all 18 measurements, 9 on each side, may be treated as an index of the roundness of the leaf blade. Differences between sums of all measurements of the left and right leaf site could be a base for calculations of various asymmetry indices, including indicators of fluctuating asymmetry. Indices obtained by this method are quite sensitive and may be analysed using standard statistical methods.

Opis:
Maintaining the body underwater in the so-called vertical position, where the body is inverted (head down) and balanced, is made possible by performing the support scull movement by the upper limbs. In synchronized swimming, the main criteria for judging this vertical position are maintaining body stability and the maximum height of the lower limbs one is able to extend out of the water. Therefore, it seems important to examine for any correlations between the symmetry of the upper limb’s movement (sculling) and the ability to maintain balance of the body. The aim of this study was to use a dynamical asymmetry index (DAI) to assess the symmetry of the upper limb movements performed in synchronized swimming. The use of the dynamical asymmetry index is considered to be advantageous over the asymmetry coefficient, which is better known in literature on the subject and has been used by numerous authors, as it not only evaluates the magnitude of the asymmetry, but also indicates in which phases of movement asymmetry is the greatest or where it is the least significant.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to derive reference values for a four-level scale intended to evaluate variation in free gait asymmetry measurements in healthy subjects. Methods: This evaluation is based on kinetic values for the left and right lower limbs during gait, registered with advanced measurement systems and assessed using the symmetry index (SI) developed by Robinson. Results: For the majority of parameters, the SI does not follow normal distribution. As such, quartile values were used to create intervals for a four-step scale of assessing symmetry of free gait in healthy subjects for each studied gait parameter. The SI rating intervals were from 0% (very good symmetry) to 21.2% (very poor symmetry) for kinetic parameters. The poorest symmetry was observed for horizontal force F3. Conclusions: The four-step scale of assessing symmetry in free gait in healthy subjects can be used in diagnosing gait disorders, devising surgical treatment strategies, and monitoring the rehabilitation process. Reference values for intervals of symmetry indicators in healthy subjects can be used as criteria for comparing individuals with/without disabilities.

Opis:
Background. Short-track speed skaters who regularly participate in training are exposed to the occurrence of asymmetry in the lower limb loading. Objective. The study aimed to assess the symmetry of the lower limb loading in short track skaters and the relationship between age, training experience and anthropometric variables and symmetry of lower limb loading. Methods. The examined group consisted of 20 short-track speed skaters (12 men and 8 women), and the control group comprised 28 university students (14 men and 14 women). Two scales were used to assess the symmetry of lower limb loading, and the lower limb's loading symmetry index (LSI) was calculated. Results. In the studied groups 65% of skaters and 82% of students have LSI within the normal range. Most short-track speed skaters (85%) put weight on the right lower limb, and there was no clear trend among students (p < 0.001). In the group of skaters, the majority of men (83%) properly loaded their lower limbs, compared to 37.5% of women (p = 0.036). In short-track speed skaters, positive correlations were found between LSI and the age and length of training. Conclusions. Long-term asymmetric loading of the lower limbs in short-track speed skaters causes the advantage of the load on the right lower limb and increases the asymmetry of the load on the lower limbs, especially in women.

Opis:
The neo-tectonic research is interested in the study of the movements of Earth’s crust in recent geological times. It could explain the deformation mechanisms that lead to the structuring of drainage catchments. The Morsott-Tebessa-Youkous (Chabro) collapsed basin corresponds to a subsiding depression framed by brittle structures and filled with thick deposits. Our work aims to unveil the neo-tectonic activity and reconstruct the morphometric evolution of the landscape and the drainage network of the basin. For this task, our investigation applies a quantitative analysis of geomorphic indices extracted from the DEM of the study area. We used a GIS-based approach to compile seven morphometric factors namely Integral Hypsometry (HI), the Sinuosity of mountain fronts (Smf), the Valley Floor width to height ratio (VF), the Asymmetry Factor (AF), Basin Shape index (BS), and the topography (T). All these thematic parameters were processed in a Geo-database to calculate the study area’s Relative Tectonic Activity Index (IRAT) as a result. The IRAT map was categorized into three classes. The result highlighted the distribution of relative tectonic activity in the region and unveiled some unknown faults. It associated the sinuosity of rivers and the deformation of the substratum with active tectonic anomalies. This research work succeeded in drawing up a new scheme of the neo-tectonic activity and morphostructural evolution in the collapsed basin.

Opis:
Using the results of psychophysical and biomechanical experiments, NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) Recommended Weight Limit (RWL), the Lifting Index (LI), the form of the asymmetry multiplier, and the criterion for compression force were investigated. Analysis of the results indicated a significant difference between the NIOSH RWL and the reported Maximum Acceptable Weight of Lift (MAWL). Contrary to the NIOSH lifting equation, the form of the asymmetry multiplier was found to be non-linear. The overall average of peak compression force on the L5/S1 was 3685 N. Fifty-eight percent of all compression forces reported in the biomechanical experiment were found to exceed the suggested 3400 N set by NIOSH guidelines. These results support previous research findings on the validity of NIOSH guidelines.
