This essay undertakes a brief engagement with Martin Heidegger’s reading of Sophocles’ “Ode to Man” to orient hermeneutic engagements with three paintings (Goya’s Saturn Devouring His Children, El Greco’s Purification of the Temple, and Hodler’s Truth) to say something about hermeneutic education, truth, and violence.

Opis:
In his piece, the author of the article ponders on the experience of loss in human life. It is this particular experience, as well as the accompanying longing, that form the basic components of an elegiac attitude. However, in its broader sense, loss becomes one of the most universal experiences in literature and the arts of the twentieth century. After all, they shared the conviction that reality, no matter how looked upon, was never fully accessible to us and that man always played a losing game with it. Contrary to outward appearances, the above also applies to the creators of avant-garde movements. An analysis of the poem Do NN***, written by Miron Białoszewski, carried out first within the context of elegy and then with reference to the techniques and the program of cubism, makes us aware that Białoszewski somehow evades both elegiac mood and the avant-garde principles such as they are underlined in its program. The driving force for his writing is then curiosity. And it is curiosity, and just curiosity, independent and one that cannot be reduced to just the desire to know, that forms the only real alternative that, in a way, always remains metaphysical.

This paper examines the letters exchanged between Vadim Sidur and Karl Eimermacher, and Julia Sidur and Karl Eimermacher in the context of the influential testimony of the 20th century. In the letters from Vadim Sidura addressed to Karl Eimermacher — the German Professor of Slavic Studies — the predominant issue discussed is the artistic work of the former and his future plans: exhibitions, books, catalogues; it also covers in detail the culture of the epochs of Leonid Brezhnev, Yuri Andropov, and the early years of Mikhail Gorbachev’s activity. Letters authored by Vadim Sidura’s wife Julia, written after his death, convey descriptions of perestroika and the atmosphere within the culture of the 80s. It is worth noting that both addressers are critics not only capable of noting particular phenomena, but also keen of providing analytical judgements. This exchange happens to be a significant testimony of the times of perestroika and the convoluted events accompanying the political transformation. Importantly enough, it shows both that part of society which yearns for preserving the old political system, and those citizens who actively participate in the creation of the new society and its structures. Both collections of letters along with the facts, descriptions, and evaluations they cover, boil down to a testimony of an epoch in which dialogue has been — and still is — possible.

This paper describes the self-portraits of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (1885-1939) who was a painter, writer, philosopher, theoretician, and critic. The author has selected twelve most interesting works, analysed them and interpreted in the context of the whole literary, philosophical, and epistolographic output of the artist, including his biography. The text is supplemented by coloured oil reproductions, pastels, and drawings. They are described in detail in a chronological order. All the elements of Witkacy's works become meaningful, starting from typically historical and artificial: representations, views, colours, techniques, and signatures or the author's title. This paper is based on a master's thesis and it contains also some remarks concerning the whole collection of self-portraits. The author sought to show Witkacy's self-portraits. Witkacy was a professional portrait painter in the perspective of dandy painting. Now drawing on the studies written by historians of art and literature, she sought to indicate how useful are the categories used in literature or journalism for painting. Dandy painting is a key of interpretation that helps to explain not only why the author of A Farewell to Autumn was so eager to paint his physiognomy (there are eighty-two self-portraits), but also the varied character of the collection of self-portraits. We may find among them representative portraits painted with care, and some sketches drawn in haste under the influence of drugs, or self-caricatures attached to correspondence.

The author argues that although William Shakespeare sometimes allows for minor inconsistencies in his plays, which more often than not pass unnoticed during their performances, he meticulously weaves their structures. In the course of analysing two examples of the playwright’s works, The Comedy of Errors and Much Ado About Nothing, the author suggests that in the former the Bard offers an hour-after-hour image of the fictional reality, whereas in the latter he not only provides us with a detailed account of the events placed within the calendar, but also seems to take advantage of this structure to suggest some hidden meaning.

Opis:
This paper attempts to acquaint Polish readers with the Russian Orthodox philosopher Pavel Florensky’s (1882–1937) thinking on the category of space‑ness, which together with the categories of symbolism and light is one of the key‑words in his theory of aesthetics. The concept of space is, according to Florensky, a criterion for distinguishing art types, although for him it is only a model, which can be used to help form judgments about the world. It is also the basis of being for the artwork itself. Painting and printmaking, among other arts types mentioned by Florensky (poetry, music, theatre, and architecture), have their own particularities in their organization of space. Painting and printmaking are, for Florensky, the truest art forms — art par excellence. The presentation of a threefold interpretation of the category of space‑ness, together with the description and justification of the divisions which are made in art based on these spatial categories by the philosopher is the leitmotiv of this paper. The aim of the paper is to present and discuss the opinions and arguments of the Orthodox thinker from his work Анализ пространственности (и времени) в художественно‑изобразительных произведениях, which has not yet been translated into Polish or English.

Opis:
Nothing intrigues more than performing tasks that disability renders impossible. Overcoming physical limitations and mental restraints raises an interesting issue of the human creative potential broadly investigated by scientists and acutely experienced by the disabled. A cruel disease that leads to complete blindness appears even more dramatic when affects visual artists. A blind artist painter sounds an oxymoron, but the stories of Sargy Mann and John Bramblitt prove that a human being can always defy comfortable schemes. A sighted observer may be puzzled by complexity of this multipolar drama marked with painful turning points, but also, perhaps surprisingly, with a feeling of gain, sense, and reward. The artists’ personal and subjective perception of the loss inspires a discussion that presents universal values in a broader perspective. Beauty and truth, uncertainty and courage are to be found in the narrations of the artists above and the essays of a distinguished Polish philosopher Fr. Józef Tischner. The article portrays the silhouettes of the blind painters focusing on their artistic strive to a meaningful and rewarding life in the light of philosophical reflections based on the axiomatic concepts of beauty and truth.

Opis:
Późnogotycki obraz tablicowy z przedstawieniem Madonny Apokaliptycznej z Alwerni cechuje wyjątkowo ciekawa historia, a także dość oryginalna technika i technologia wykonania. Powstało ono najprawdopodobniej w samodzielnie funkcjonującej pracowni stolarskiej w Małopolsce i wykazuje dużo podobieństw do innych tego typu obiektów z regionu.
The late Gothic panel painting with a representation of the Apocalyptic Madonna from Alwernia is characterised by an exceptionally interesting history as well as quite original technique and technology of creation. According to the archival materials, the picture was painted before 1491 by a monastic painter, Francis of Hungary, for the main altar of the Bernardine church in Krakow, and in the 17th century it was moved to the newly founded monastery of the same order in the town of Alwernia. Analysis of the technique and technology of its creation leads to the conclusion that they are not typical for the Małopolska region (Lesser Poland). For this reason – and also because the artist was most probably from Spiš region, and did not belong to any of the Krakow guilds – it seems that in the mentioned respects the painting should be closer to works from Spiš region. However, the juxtaposition of Francis’ working methods with the objects created in Spiš does not reveal many common features either. To some extent, the exception is the Strážky altarpiece, dated back to the 1550s or 1560s on which the ornaments from the robes of figures resemble formally and technically similar elements of the Alwernia painting. The similarities are so great that we can conclude that Francis was the creator of some parts of the Spiš altarpiece. Since the works in question were created 20-30 years apart from each other, the painter in question was probably still an apprentice, at the time when he was working on the Strážky altarpiece. The painting support on which the Alwernia picture was created is a separate issue. It was probably made at an independent carpenter’s workshop in the Małopolska region and shows many similarities to other artefacts of this type from the region.

Opis:
The text is a scholarly interpretation of the manuscript of Wlastimil Hofman's lecture on Czech art, delivered on 16 January 1934 in the Jagellonian University in Cracow. The manuscript comes from Jiài Karásek's collection that since 1960 has been kept in Prague, in the collection of Památník národního písmnictví. Seventy years ago in his lecture Wlastimil Hofman gave an outline of the history of Czech painting, starting from the period of the early Gothic, up to the artists and works from the break of the 19th century that were most important for Czech art. The choice of the Czech artists and their works presented to Polish students was influenced by both the Polish painter's personal views of social-historical nature and his artistic preferences – Hofman knew well Prague's artistic circles of those times and historical and political determinants, also of art, of the then young Czechoslovakia. In the text of his lecture Wlastimil Hofman did not conceal the fact that he did not know the old Czech art very well, so he fully based his opinions about artists and about their works, especially of the Gothic, Renaissance and baroque periods, on opinions expressed by the Czech historians of art who specialized in those periods, like Vincenc Kramaø or Vojtéch Volavka. Only the 19th century Czech painting that Hofman knew well was treated by the Polish painter more broadly and in greater detail. In this part of his lecture the artist expressed his personal tastes and likings, especially in reference to Czech artists of the period of the so-called “national awakening” that started at the break of the 18th century, when, first on the grounds of the Enlightenment ideology, and then of the 19th century nationalism the Czechs undertook actions aiming at revival of their nation. Along with building the foundations of a new economic structure and modern forms of political life they created the basic elements of the literary Czech language, of literature and of their own national art. Owing to the efforts they undertook, in all domains of life – starting from economy and ending with the problems connected with developing the nation's creative powers and national consciousness (with a special emphasis on the element of education, ethics and art), Czech entered the 20th century as the only nation in Central and Eastern Europe that did not have its own state, and after World War I, in 1918, they established Czechoslovakia, a country that was an element of Europe of that time within the so-called Versailles order, and one that was the crowning of the many centuries of Czechs' and Slovaks' national aspirations.

The article titled „Lubomir Tomaszewski – emotionalist” is dedicated to the work of the artist who died on November 15, 2018. The text reveals both less and more known aspects of Tomaszewski's life and creative work. It is chronologically presents his artistic career, starting from school times and less known facts about the artist's participation in the Warsaw Uprising, which influenced his later work. The author reached little-known documents and works from the Warsaw Rising Museum’s collection. Presenting Lubomir Tomaszewski one can not omit his animal and human figurines and coffee services designed for the Ćmielów Porcelain Factory, which made the artist famous. Successes in this field contributed to the artist's departure to the United States, where he became famous as a sculptor using natural materials such as wood, stone or metal. In the 90s the artist developed his own technique of painting with the use of smoke and fire. This technique allowed him both to reflect his wartime experiences and to create a series of works that show various aspects of movement, such as dancing. At the end of his life, he returned to cooperate with the Ćmielów Porcelain Factory and designed new models of figurines. Lubomir Tomaszewski was the leader of the international artistic assosiation „Emotionalists”, whose members in their works refer to the return to nature.

The article concerns the way in which the eye topos functions in Paweł Hertz’s Sedan and Kazimierz Brandys’ The Wooden Horse, works representing Polish literature of retribution written in the 1940s. The role of the process of seeing is interpreted by means of the category of melancholy, and the protagonists in these works are presented as melancholics. Standing in front of a window or in the quiet of European museums, members of the intelligentsia do not so much focus on passive contemplation but rather protest against History. The desire to constantly use the eyes has an existential and political sense. Recognition of the phenomenon of a melancholic gaze in the literature of retribution enriches the traditional interpretation of this trend in literature by lending it a new context and allowing rehabilitation of the intellectuals portrayed in it.
