The article examines the labour migration of Ukrainians to the Warmia-Masuria province. Such research methods as systematic, comparative, behavioural, statistical data analysis, document analysis, focused interviews and case study helped to identify current trends and key challenges presented by migration flows of Ukrainians to the province. The main factors affecting Ukrainian labour migration to the province are analysed, with particular emphasis placed on quantitative descriptions of the features of Ukrainian employment in the region. It is concluded that there are prospects for further labour migration of Ukrainian workers to Warmia-Masuria.

W prezentowanej pracy przedstawiono województwo warmińsko-mazurskie pod kątem możliwości pozyskiwania biomasy pochodzącej z różnych źródeł, w tym także biomasy pochodzenia rolniczego na podstawie przeprowadzonej w gminach badaniach ankietowych. Przedstawione zostały także możliwości wykorzystania tej biomasy z energetycznego punktu widzenia oraz występujące w województwie warmińsko-mazurskim bariery to wykorzystanie ograniczające.
The presented paper demonstrates the analysis of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship from the point of view of the possibilities to acquire biomass originating from various sources, also including biomass from agricultural industry, carried out on the basis of surveys completed in individual boroughs. Moreover, the work presents the potential for using this biomass for energy production purposes, and barriers limiting the use occurring in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.

The opportunities for urban investment co-funding which emerged in Poland after its accession to the European Union are not taken to a satisfying extent, especially in towns, e.g. those with a population up to 20 000. Despite many difficulties there are attempts to break the deadlock. Such attempts may be found for example in towns of Warmia and Mazury Province whose idea of funding their revitalization programmes – apart from applying for money allocated to Regional Operational Programme (ROP) – has become participation in the Cittaslow international network of cities.

This paper presents the results of a mineralogical and petrological study of the Sołtmany meteorite, which fell on April 30, 2011 in northern Poland. The meteorite was found almost immediately after it fell and has been little altered by weathering. Sołtmany is not the only observed fall of an L6 chondrite over Europe in the past few years. The preceding fall of this type, Jesenice (Slovenia), was also witnessed in April of 2009. However, it was not until several weeks after the fall that the first specimen of Jesenice was found, whereas Sołtmany was collected after a few minutes and submitted for analysis within a couple of days. The author presents mineral and petrographic features and chemical characteristics of mineral phases in Sołtmany. The mineral components are represented by metallic phases (kamacite, taenite, tetrataenite, native copper), as well as chromite, olivine, low and high-calcium pyroxene, feldspar, chlorine-bearing apatite, and merrillite. This study also describes the texture of the meteorite and takes notice of a low number of preserved chondrules and the presence of oval chondrule like areas, which exhibit a metamorphosed, recrystallized texture. Sołtmany was classified as an L6 ordinary chondrite with a weathering grade of W0. A shock stage S2 was determined on the basis of undulose extinction and lack of planar fractures in olivine crystals.

Artykuł omawia wzajemne oddziaływania przyrodnicze i środowiskowe ludzi i bobrów na terenie ziem pruskich (Warmii i Mazur) od czasów najdawniejszych po współczesność. Charakteryzuje środowisko bytowania bobra, który należy do grupy największych gryzoni Eurazji. Bardzo ważną rolę w tworzeniu i zarządzaniu rezerwatem bobrowym na rzece Pasłęce po II wojnie światowej odegrał nadleśniczy z podolsztyńskich Kudyp – Otokar Rudke. Dokumenty przekazane przez jego spadkobierców, a także znalezione w Archiwum Dyrekcji Lasów Państwowych oraz Instytucie Pamięci Narodowej, pozwoliły na zaprezentowanie biografii tej nietuzinkowej postaci i jej roli w ochronie bobrów. Zakończenie artykułu wskazuje na obecny stan liczebny bobrów w województwie warmińsko-mazurskim i szkody wynikające z ich bytowania. Tekst ten może być wykorzystany do badań komparatystycznych w innych regionach Polski i Europy.
The article discusses the natural and environmental relationships between people and beavers in the former Prussia (present Warmia and Masuria) from the earliest periods to the present day. It characterises the natural habitat of the beaver which belongs to the largest rodents of Eurasia. Otokar Rudke – the forest district manager from Kudypy near Olsztyn – played a very important role in the development and management of the beaver reserve on the Pasłęka river after the World War II . The documents handed over by his heirs as well as those found in the archives of the Directorate of State Forests and the Institute of National Remembrance, allowed to present this ouststanding personality’s biography and his role in the protection of beavers. The end of the article points out the current number of beavers in Warmia and Masuria region and damages resulting from their existence. This text can be used for comparative studies in other Polish regions and Europe.

W artykule została przeprowadzona analiza wypowiedzi mieszkańców Warmii i Mazur zanotowanych w czasie badań dialektologicznych prowadzonych w latach pięćdziesiątych XX wieku. Obserwacji poddane zostały zapisane opinie i sądy, będące przejawami świadomości językowej ludności. Bardzo liczne wypowiedzi tego typu dotyczyły słownictwa, umiejętności rozróżniania i używania wyrazów gwarowych, ogólnopolskich i niemieckich. Autochtoni wykazywali się także dobrą orientacją w zagadnieniach fonetycznych – zwracali uwagę na mazurzenie (określali je mianem szczypania) i wymowę samogłosek nosowych. W związku z sytuacją polityczną w pierwszej połowie XX wieku wykazywali zainteresowanie pochodzeniem rodzimej gwary i jej stosunkiem do innych języków (polskiego, niemieckiego) i funkcjonowaniem w społeczeństwie. Wypowiedzi Warmiaków i Mazurów ukazują także pozytywne emocje łączące się z językiem przekazywanym dzieciom zwłaszcza przez kobiety (matki, babcie, prababcie).
This article analyzes statements of the inhabitants of Warmia and Masuria recorded during dialectological research in the 1950s. Observations have been made of opinions and judgments that are manifestations of the linguistic awareness of the population. Numerous statements of this type concerned vocabulary, the ability to distinguish and use dialectal words, national and German. The autochthons also showed good awareness of phonetic issues – here they pointed to mazurzenie (they called them szczypanie ‘tingling’) and the pronunciation of nasal vowels. In connection with the political situation in the first half of the twentieth century, they remained interested in the origin of the native dialect and its relation to other languages (Polish, German) and functioning in society. The statements from Warmia and Masuria also show positive emotions connected with the language, transmitted to children especially by women (mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers).

Celem opracowania była analiza przestrzennego zróżnicowania poziomu życia w województwie warmińsko-mazurskim. W tym celu zastosowano metodę wzorcową Hellwiga, a następnie dokonano grupowania powiatów do czterech klas, uwzględniając wartość syntetyczną obliczonego wskaźnika. Na podstawie dokonanych analiz okazało się, że najwyższy poziom życia stał się w 2012 roku udziałem mieszkańców powiatów Krainy Wielkich Jezior Mazurskich, a więc oleckiego, giżyckiego, mrągowskiego i węgorzewskiego. Na szczególną uwagę zasługuje ponadto sytuacja powiatu grodzkiego Elbląg, którego poziom życia jest najniższy w całym regionie i znacznie odstaje od pozostałych. Sytuacja społeczno-gospodarcza tego powiatu winna stać się przedmiotem szczególnej troski władz samorządowych oraz instytucji odpowiedzialnych za infrastrukturę społeczną miasta.
The aim of the study was to analyze the spatial differentiation of living standards in the Warmia-Mazury using cluster analysis. It was found that highest standard of living was noticed in the counties of Great Masurian Lakes, such as: olecki, gizycki, mragowski and wegorzewski. It was also noticed that the situation in Elblag was very bad. Socio-economic situation of the county should be deeply analyzed by the local government and the institutions responsible for social infrastructure in the city.

Along with the change in the agricultural policy in 1948 that was inspired by the Kremlin and imposed during the 2nd Cominform in Bucharest, the collectivisation of the rural area became a doctrinal issue in the agricultural policy of Communist states. Apart from the direct methods of collectivisation that concerned strong administrative and economic pressures towards the peasants, the authorities also undertook actions that were to introduce the production cooperatives in a more clouded manner. These included, among others, establishing self–help villages, joint agreements between the villagers and State Machinery Centres (Pol. Państwowe Ośrodki Maszynowe, POM) for machinery services for their fields, developing simple forms of agricultural cooperation in the arbitrarily created units for cultivation, grassland, farming, etc. These activities, aided by a system of concessions and preferences, brought certain results, especially towards the end of the discussed period. They prove the wide array of measures and methods used by the Communist authorities in their attempts at collectivisation.

The article concerns the problem of public school teachers’ daily lives in Masuria. The analysis took into account such components of everyday life as: travel to Warmia and Masuria, reasons for choosing the profession, education, work areas, the conditions and working methods, types of nourishment at school, the financial conditions of schools and some elements of private life. The issue of teachers’ daily lives deserves special attention because of the specific situation of Polish education in Warmia and Masuria in the school years 1944/1945–1945/1946. Teachers were mainly engaged in organizing Polish schools from the start in order to promote the Polish language among youth and children from different nationalities and cultures. Their daily lives were strongly influenced by determining the final borders of the District of Masuria, the action for preserving this land, the constant risk and problems with the staff, rooms and money. The article is not only about daily professional life (part I) but also about teachers’ personal lives (part II). The sphere of private life refers to issues such as food supplies, households, salaries, housing, family matters, forms of spending leisure time. There is certainly a need for broader studies using a variety of source materials. The sources of an autobiographical nature, memories and diaries, have been mainly used to present the issue.

Opis:
Gradually shaping for ages the rural landscape, according to the tradition and experience, is subject to the violent transformation. Confronted with the investment pressure, global process and progress in cultural landscape degradation observing in the 90s of the 20th century, it started to come back, very lively at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the ideas of regionalism. Since the mid-90s the landscape shaping and its preserving has been in the Warmia and Mazuria region actively and creatively undertaken by the olsztyńskie association the Cultural Community "Borussia". From that circle came out the impulse to invite tenders for the design of the modern house which had been inspired by the local tradition. In 2010 the competition "Twój dom - dialog z tradycją" ["Your house - the dialogue with tradition"] was organized by the Warmian and Mazurian Marshal Office, National Center for Historical Monuments Studies and Documentation (presently National Heritage Board of Poland) and Polish Architecture Association - Local Division in Olsztyn. The main goal of that competition was to find out and to popular some new models of the family housing for the rural lands which could have been a kind of the traditional building continuation. a point of departure for the creative interpretation of the most characteristic and valuable landscape and Warmian and Mazurian architecture motives was the monograph concerning the tradition of the regional housing and farm building. 184 designs from all over Poland entered into this project. Many of the participants made an attempt in creative and modern interpretation of the historical motives both in the form and the details and being also inspired by the farm buildings. Prized (4) and awarded (24) projects were prepared to be sold and have also been presented in the catalogue which was distributed in the region. The competition organizers believ, that the designs will wind the purchasers and the constructed houses will soon appear in the Warmian and Mazurian region raising its landscape value.

Historiografia polska do 1945 roku wykazywała zainteresowanie tylko znakomitymi postaciami, głównie Warmii. Liczne artykuły i publikacje książkowe pojawiły się na temat Igancego Krasickiego, Stanisława Hozjusza i Marcina Kromera. Dopiero w latach sześćdziesiątych, gdy w Olsztynie zawiązało się instytucjonalne środowisko humanistyczne pojawiły się poważne biograficzne artykuły odnoszące się głównie ludzi związanych z działaniami na rzecz Polski. Niewątpliwym dorobkiem biografistyki polskiej dotyczącej Warmii i Mazur są słowniki biograficzne Tadeusza Orackiego, które były odpowiedzią na podobny słownik wschodniopruski wydany w pierwszej połowie XX wieku. Gdy powstała oficyna wydawnicza Pojezierze i Ośrodek Badań Naukowych im. W. Kętrzyńskiego zaczęły pojawiać się serie biograficzne znakomitych ludzi ale działajacych na rzecz kultury i nauki polskiej na ziemiach pruskich. Nie brakowało wówczas też biografii związanych z kulturą niemiecką, pojawiły się książki o Herderze czy Ernście Wiechercie. Dorobek powojennej biografistyki historycznej jest spory a nawet duży jeżeli go porównamy z innym regionami Polski. Biografie znakomitych ludzi żyjacych na ziemiach też byłych Prus Wschodnich zaczęto publikować w licznych regionalnych czasopismach a także monografiach miast i powiatów wydanych po 1990 roku. Zaczęto wówczas traktować owe dziedzictwo kulturalne jako wspólne europejskie. Nie sposób wyliczyć ile biograficznych publikacji powstało wskutek inicjatyw działaczy regionalnych a wpływały one wszystkie na kształtowanie się świadomości regionalnej.

The article contains a critical analysis of the opinions of dialectologists studying the dialects of Warmia and Masuria. In their view, firmly established since the 1960s, the influence of the German language on the regions’ dialects was insignificant and superficial. The article recalls and studies the sources used in the compilation of Słownik gwar Ostródzkiego, Warmii i Mazur, presents the linguistic material published therein. It poses a thesis that, although the language system of the studied dialect is Polish, the naming system comprising all fundamental spheres of life was shaped under a significant and versatile influence of German. Loanwords, semantic borrowings, replicas from the German language enter into numerous relationships of synonymy, hyponymy antonymy or hyperonymy with Polish words, creating complex and cohesive semantic fields within which the users of a dialect moved freely.

Opis:
There are many existing and planned wind farms in the Province of Warmia and Mazury, despite numerous administrative and societal obstacles to prevent this. The main aim of the study was to identify the factors involved in the planning and development of wind turbines based on the examples in Warmia and Mazury. The research consisted of analyzing collected source materials on the placement of wind farms as well as the social and legal aspects of wind power generation. According to data obtained from government offices in the Warmia and Mazury province, there are 242 wind power turbines that in total generate 460 MW. Wind farms erected in Warmia and Mazury stir up strong reactions from local residents and organizations aimed at preserving the natural and cultural heritage of this region.

Opis:
Celem tego artykułu jest ukazanie instytucjonalnego wymiaru regionalizmu na Warmii i Mazurach. Z regionu po 1945 r. wyemigrowała większość etnicznych Warmiaków i Mazurów, pomimo tego inteligencja rodzimego pochodzenia organizowała instytucje, których działalność można nazwać „starym regionalizmem”. Mimo ograniczeń nakładanych przez peerelowski socjalistyczny nacjonalizm starano się zachować i propagować regionalną kulturę. Przełom roku 1989 przyniósł pojawienie się instytucji, które dążyły do budowania nowej regionalnej kultury i tożsamości. Chodziło o stworzenie syntezy kultur i tożsamości wszystkich grup zamieszkujących Warmię i Mazury. Nowy typ działalności można zasadnie określić mianem „nowego regionalizmu”.
The aim of this article is to describe regionalism in the Warmia and Mazuria region. Although the majority of indigenous inhabitants emigrated from the region after 1945, some intellectuals who did not leave Poland established several organizations that focused on activities which may be described as ‘old regionalism’. Taking into account the political context, they tried to save the regional culture. After 1989 (the beginning of the transition period in Poland) new organizations were founded. Their members try to create a new type of regional culture and identity – a synthesis of cultures and identities of all cultural and ethnic groups living in Warmia and Mazuria. These new kinds of activities should be called ‘new regionalism’.
