This article deals with the dichotomy of static and dynamic valency. Although the attribute static means constancy and characteristic dynamic is most associated with changeability and variantibility, both types of verbal valence show (although very different) fixed and variable aspects. Quite obviously this is related to the specificity of valency – to its multilayered qualities. This paper presents attempts to show in what sense static valency implies variantibility, and what fixed and what variable aspects are included in dynamic valency.

This paper presents the aspect of the dynamics of the verb valency and discusses the question of valency grammar. There are two primary conditions that cause the valency to change: grammatical (in the diachronic view: Tesnière 1959, 1980, Sadziński 1989) and contextual (Růžička 1978, Nikula 2003, Storrer 1992, Agel 2000). The point of this discription is to define changes of valency and to rank them in order to simplify the use of German constructions.

The aim of the present article has been to show on the example of the three Latin verbs – emere, admonere and aestimare – the relations occurring between valency on the semantic plane and valency on the syntactic plane. Analysis of the syntactic valency of the verbs and of their semantic valency expressed in terms of deep cases confirms the thesis that there is no univocal correspondence between valency on the semantic plane and valency on the syntactic plane. On its basis it may be said that the same semantic case is realized in a different way as the actant of the surface structure, and in turn actants that are the same as far as their morphological form is concerned have different semantic roles.

Valency of Russian verba sentiendi in the light of explicative syntaxThe subject of this article are syntactic (distributional) properties of Russian sentimental verbs (denoting emotions, moods, affects, passions etc.) in a synchronistic view. 319 units of modern Russian language are studied using a theoretical model of explicative syntax, i.e., representation of the propositional structure at the level of grammaticalization of certain argument positions (defined in terms of grammatical classes). The author distinguishes some distributional patterns noted in the source material (explicative schemes), describing them with reference to the meaning of the lexical class as well as to their frequency (functionality). Walencja rosyjskich verba sentiendi w świetle składni eksplikacyjnejPrzedmiotem niniejszego artykułu są składniowe (dystrybucyjne) właściwości rosyjskich verba sentiendi (nazw uczuć, emocji, afektów, nastrojów i in.) w ujęciu synchronicznym. Przy zastosowaniu teoretycznego modelu składni eksplikacyjnej zbadano 319 jednostek współczesnego języka rosyjskiego. Autor przedstawia wyodrębnione w materiale źródłowym wzorce/modele dystrybucyjne (schematy eksplikacyjne) i opisuje je z uwzględnieniem znaczenia klasy leksykalnej, jak również ze względu na ich częstość reprezentacji (funkcjonalność).

Wahrend sich die Valenztheorie in der Germanistik schon seit den siebziger Jahren groser Beliebtheit erfreut, sodass praktisch alle seitdem erschienenen Grammatiken des Deutschen sich ihrer bedient haben, um die deutsche Syntax zu beschreiben, ist die Theorie in der Hispanistik lange Zeit einfach ignoriert worden. Untersucht wird in diesem Beitrag, wie sich die Rezeption der Theorie in der spanischen Grammatikschreibung entwickelt hat.
While the theory of valency has enjoyed great acceptance in the German language since the 70s in such a way that since then, almost all German grammars have used it to describe German syntax, in Spanish it has been ignored for a long time. In the present article, I analyse how the reception of the theory in Spanish grammaticography has developed.

In this paper, we study specific relations between uses of the same verb lexeme that stem from changes in the linking of situational participants, valency complementations and surface syntactic positions - we refer to them as alternations. The focus is on the types that are expressed by lexical-semantic means and result in changes in valency frames of verbs. Lexicalized alternations can be exemplified by the well-known pair naložit seno na vůz - naložit vůz senem 'to load hay on the truck - to load the truck with hay'. We present and analyze three basic types of lexicalized alternations in Czech. They may be characterized as either conversive, or non-conversive. The conversive lexicalized alternations represents central ones in the language system and are here reffered to as (i) the lexical-semantic conversions (e.g., the locative alternation, the Bearer-Location alternation, Material-Product alternation, spread alternation etc.). On the other hand, the non-conversive alternations are rather peripheral; we can introduce/mention? esp. (ii) different structural expressions of a single situational participant (e.g. vyjít na kopec - vyjít kopec 'climb up the hill - climb the hill') and (iii) the structural splitting of a situational participant (e.g., theme-dictum splitting for Czech verbs of communication and mental action). Furthermore, we propose a formal framework that allows us to represent different types of lexicalized alternations in the valency lexicon of Czech verbs, VALLEX. For this purpose, the lexicon is divided into the data component and the rule component. In the data part, each lexical unit of a given lexeme is characterized (primarily) by its valency frame; moreover, a list of applicable lexical alternations is atached to it. Presented in the rule part are general lexical rules specifying changes in the linking of situational participants and valency complmentations typical of indyvidual lexicalized alternations.

The article concerns the basic linguistic notion of "a language unit", in particular the term: "open class" that is essential in the structuralist theory of language units. The authors present possible misinterpretations of this term and their consequences for delimitating language units. A more detailed analysis is devoted to expressions ani (+preposition) + noun and ani + verb. The authors justify the thesis on semantic and functional homogeneity of ani in the expressions of both types. By doing so, they set against the lexicographic tradition of noting multiple idiomatic expressions consisting of the sequence ani.

In this paper we present a contribution to the transformation of PolNet, a Polish wordnet developed at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Pozna, into a Lexicon Grammar of Polish. The current step consists in including verb-noun collocations and relations linking the verbal synsets to noun synsets. We focus on the concept of synonymy for two kinds of predicative entities: verbs and verb-noun collocations and on synset granularity problems that emerged at this stage of the project. Ziel dieses Beitrags ist die Vorstellung des 2017 erschienenen Valenzlexikons Deutsch-Spanisch (VLdsp), das eine Reihe von Valenzwörterbüchern fortsetzt, die Ulrich Engel vor Jahrzehnten begonnen hat. Neben der Skizzierung der Haupteigenschaften des Werkes wird insbesondere auf wichtige Erneuerungen gegenüber vorigen Valenzwörterbüchern sowie auf kontrastive Entscheidungen zwecks einer eindeutigeren und ausführlicheren Darstellung der Äquivalenz eingegangen. Zudem wird auf mögliche Anwendungen der darin enthaltenen syntaktisch-semantischen Angaben bei der Entwicklung weiterer Ressourcen hingewiesen.
The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the German-Spanish valency dictionary (VLdsp) published in 2017, which continues the tradition of a range of valency dictionaries that Ulrich Engel initiated decades ago. In addition to outlining the most important features of our dictionary, with special attention to the most relevant innovations of the VLdsp in comparison to earlier valency dictionaries, we discuss the decisions which were taken when compiling the dictionary aimed at providing a clearer and more detailed representation of equivalence. Finally, the paper also examines potential applications of the syntactic-semantic valency information included in the dictionary for the development of further resources.

Strict headedness is a common idealization in the structural analysis of linguistic entities, particularly in syntax. This contribution takes a critical look at its premises and applications by demonstrating the surprising sloppiness of both the defining concepts and the test procedures, and by showing how strict headedness is nevertheless implemented as an important axiom into virtually all mainstream grammar formalisms. Subsequently, I present a non-trivial head-agnostic analysis based on Tree Unification & Constraints (TUCO) in order to show that there actually is a choice and that strict headedness can be avoided in principle.

P demotion is an umbrella term which refers to an operation performed on verbal valency. This mechanism results in a range of different constructions sharing two characteristics: the P argument loses the properties of a core argument without affecting the semantic role of the A argument. This study examines a particular case of P demotion operation called antipassive. Until recently, the antipassive construction was regarded as a particularity of a morphologically ergative type of alignment, which, triggered by an explicit verbal marker, stands in a symmetrical relationship to the passive construction. These false beliefs blindly repeated for decades were, however, at hte time well-justified. They resulted from the misinterpretation of the definition proposed by Silverstein (1972, 1976) and more importantly from the lack of adequate crosslinguistic data. However, a growing body of recent studies enables the questioning of the traditional view of the antipassive. It also provides new insights into the form and function of this construction as well as into language-specific and crosslinguistic variations. This contribution provides an overview of the most important issue involved in this particular type of the P demotion construction, with an attempt to expain the factors  which could have biased its investigation.

Das Ziel der Untersuchung ist festzustellen, welche Qualitat ausgewahlte deutsch‑polnische Online‑Worterbucher in Bezug auf die Darstellung der Valenz von Phraseologismen prasentieren. Um dies zu erreichen, werden die phraseographischen Nennformen einerseits auf ihre valenzbezogene Charakteristik hin, vor allem aber hinsichtlich der externen und qualitativen (semantischen) Valenz, uberpruft. Es soll in diesem Kontext auch der Frage nachgegangen werden, ob das Mehr der elektronischen Lexikographie, u.a. keine Platzgrunde beachten zu mussen, auf das Niveau der Valenzbeschreibung von Phraseologismen einen positiven Einfluss hat. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung geben die Antwort auf die Frage, in welchen Online‑Worterbuchern nachzuschlagen und von welchen Nachschlagewerken abzuraten ist.
The aim of the article is to show the level presented by chosen German‑Polish online dictionaries when it comes to the way of describing phraseme valency. In order to achieve it, the quality of outer and quality (semantic) valency characteristics of dictionary forms have been researched. This analysis allowed, among the others, to give an answer to the question whether predominance of electronic lexicography consisting, among the others, in overcoming some space limits, result in more precise information on phraseme valency and in which of the dictionaries this information is worked out in the best way.

Traces of the idea of verbal valency structure in nineteenth-century grammars – This paper aims to show how K.F. Beckers’s notion of “subjektive” and “objektive Verben” (i.e. those always used with an “ergänzende Objekt”, a ‘completive object’) is a rough forerunner to the modern idea of dependency grammar. In Italy, this theoretical core was assumed by Raffaello Lambruschini in 1840 (and, after him, by the basic school grammar La grammatica del mio Felicino written by Ulisse Poggi, 1865, 18722), but with a huge trivialisation: subjective verbs were identified with intransitive verbs and objective verbs with transitive ones.
