Opis:
The Mole (Krtek) was produced in the years 1957–2002 by Czech studio Bratři v triku. All episodes were directed by Zdeněk Miler (1921–2011), creator of the title character. The series achieved a global success (it was presented in eighty-five countries), and the title character found its permanent place not only in the children’s culture, but also in pop culture in general. This article presents the observations about the music in Krtek which were gathered by the analysis of The Mole episodes produced before 1991 (Perestroika) — the essay is a part of a wider research on music in children’s animated films produced in the Central and Eastern Europe in the era of the USSR. The musical analysis is carried out using the descriptive method. The author describes the selected, representative parts of the film including the accompanying soundtrack, to present the most interesting solutions applied in the films developed by the four composers: Jaroslav Křička (1882–1969), William Bukový (1932–1968), Miloš Vacek (1928–2012) and Vadim Petrov (1932–). They have created the soundtracks rich in grasping musical ideas, at the same time referring more than once to a variety of styles and genres. However, the most common is the neoclassical aesthetics, and manifested in its two variants popular in the communist Europe — i.e. the archaic and folklore-like. The music of each composer varies in respect of the dependence on the movie itself — it is often marked by a desire to give music its autonomy (while still taking the film narration into account).

Opis:
The article looks at treatments of Poland’s 20th-century history in Polish films made over the last several years. Since 2007, Polish cinema has seen an explosion of films dealing in various ways with the history of the last century. These include mega-productions by directors known for making historically themed films, like Wajda’s Katyń or Hoffman’s 1920. Battle of Warsaw, and traditional historical dramas dealing with iconic personalities (Rafał Wieczyński’s Popiełuszko. Freedom Is Within Us) and moments in time (Antoni Krauze’s Black Thursday. Janek Wiśniewski Fell). However, a number of other works make use of historical settings from the last century in new and innovative ways. Most choose smaller-scale, less grand approaches to the past, though without abandoning an ambition to accurately depict the times they portray. Films focused on issues related to family and personal relationships, such as Jan Kidawa-Błoński’s Little Rose or Borys Lankosz’s Reverse, likewise speak about life during communism, but attempt to do so without repeating clichéd images by engaging new problems or returning to familiar ones using new techniques. Lastly, memory often plays an important role as a source of knowledge about the past, and as a filter for mediating experiences of it. This can be best seen in Rafael Lewandowski’s The Mole, Władysław Pasikowski’s Consequences (Pokłosie), and Wojciech Smarzowski’s Dark House. Archival evidence, memories of relatives, and the camera itself are used in the films to pose questions about the subjectivity inherent to film as a means of learning about the past.

Opis:
The issue of settling accounts with modern history is a topic often taken up in contemporary Polish cinematography. The delicate and intriguing problems of lustration, memory, guilt, and forgiveness are, however, not only a Polish concern. In 2009, Kawasaki’s Rose, directed by Jan Hřebejku, was presented during the Berlinale. Almost a year later, Rafael Lewandowski’s debut film The Mole was released in Polish cinemas. Both the Czech and the Polish productions constitute attempts at facing the embarrassing problem faced by Poles and Czechs in terms of the problems mentioned above. A closer look at the phenomenon, viewed from two different perspectives (Polish in The Mole and Czech in Kawasaki’s Rose), provides a particularly interesting angle for analyzing this subject. In the article, the works of Rafael Lewandowski and Jan Hřebejk are compared in an effort to answer the question of what image of society emerges from these films. How do different historical and cultural conditions influence the process of shaping people’s attitudes in the face of similar problems. The author performs a film study analysis on these works, based on interviews with their authors and important reviews of them. Literary works that are topically connected with them, including Revised Edition by Péter Esterházy and The Curtain by Milan Kundera, constitute an essential context.

Opis:
The paper presents the International Avogadro Coordination (IAC ) and the problem of redefinition of the unit of amount of substance (the mole) in the context of a comprehensive reform of the international system of units (SI ) that is expected to conclude in a few years. The redefinition program, known as the New SI or the Quantum SI , draws on Maxwell’s concept of replacing artifact standards with atomic standards, which are considered stable and available – at least in principle – to everybody, everywhere and at any time; the idea has been generalized and the present tendency is to define base units in terms of physical constants. Redefinition of the mole is a spin-off project associated with redefinition of the kilogram; two high-purity, 28Si-enriched silicon spheres were manufactured to make possible very accurate measurements of their parameters in order to determine (“count”) the number of silicon atoms in each of the two spheres. Initially, the project has been designed to determine the Avogadro constant, with the intent to redefine the kilogram as the mass of an exactly specified number of atoms. Once the consensus had been reached that the kilogram should be defined by fixing the numerical value of the Planck constant and the unit of mass should be realized with the use of the watt balance, the Avogadro project of silicon spheres was reinterpreted and became the basis for the redefinition and realization of the mole. In this paper, I discuss the origins of the Avogadro project (IAC ), the physical principle of a very accurate measurement of the Avogadro constant and technical details of the realization of that project. The problem of resolving the discrepancy between results of the IAC and the watt balance project is reviewed. The current status of the IAC is discussed and difficulties with the proposed wording of the New SI redefinition of the mole are indicated. It is expected that all the technical problems can be resolved before the next meeting of the CGPM, where voting on implementation of the New SI is expected.
