This research aims to determine the effect of seaweed flour and carrageenan addition to freshwater pomfret meatball products which are preferred by panelists. This research was conducted in the fisheries technology laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University in December 2018. The method used in this research was experimental method with 15 semi-trained panelists and 3 treatments namely control treatment, carrageenan addition, and addition of seaweed flour based on pomfret surimi weight percentage. The parameters observed in the study were the hedonic test with organoleptic characteristic parameters including appearance, aroma, texture, and taste of pomfret meatballs, and folding test. The results showed that all treatments were still preferred by panelists, however the treatment of seaweed flour addition produced pomfret meatballs with a better level of preference compared to other treatments, with the average value characteristic of appearance 5.7; texture 8.2; taste 7.1; and aroma 7.1. The highest alternative was 7.49 and value of pomfret meatballs taste 0.43; the folding test result was equal to 4 which indicates that pomfret meatballs can be considered as elastic.

The present study investigates phytochemical screening and antibacterial efficacy of various solvent extracts of marine algae such as Sargassum swartzii against some selected human and fish pathogenic bacteria. The brown seaweed Sargassum swartzii was collected from Kudankulam, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, India. Soxhlet extraction method was used to get the extracts of different solvents like aqueous, ethanol, methanol, acetone and were tested for their qualitative phytochemical screening using common standard tests. Quantitative phytochemical analysis such as total phenolic content and total flavonoid content of S. swartzii and antibacterial activity against human pathogens viz., Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Stephylococcus aureus and fish pathogens viz., Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio vulnificus bacteria using disc diffusion methods. Preliminary phytochemical screening of sixteen different chemical compounds were carried out. The maximum biochemical compounds were present in the ethanol extract and the minimum compounds were present in aqueous extract. The ethanol extract was significantly higher in phenolic content (15.35 ±2.61 mg of GAE/g) and the methanol extract was significantly higher in flavonoides content (26.92±7.14 mg of QE/g). In human pathogen the highest antibacterial activity was present in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (18.00±0.00mm) and the fish pathogen was significantly higher in Aeromonas hydrophila. The present study showed that the ethanol extract of marine brown seaweed Sargassum swartzii contains bio active constituents with highest antibacterial activity against human and fish pathogen.

This research aims to determine the amount of addition of locust bean gum to produce the best characteristics of alginate grains. The research was conducted in January - February 2018 at the Fisheries Product Processing Laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University. The method that was used in this research is the experimental method with Completely Randomized Design with four treatments and three repititions. The parameters observed in this research include viscosity, gel strength, syneresis, stability, pH, water content, and ash content. The results of the research showed that the addition of locust bean gum in the alginate gel increases viscosity, gel strength, and decreases syneresis. The addition of 30% locust bean gum produced alginate grains with the best characteristics which had a viscosity of 337 cP, gel strength (), syneresis 3.10%, pH 3.10, moisture content 93.70%, and ash content 0.4%.

Opis:
In this research, the batch removal of Pb2+ ions from wastewater and aqueous solution with the use o two different modified algae Gracilaria corticata (red algae) and Sargassum glaucescens (brown algae) was examined. The experiment was performed in a batch system and the effect of the pH solution; initial concentration and contact time on biosorption by both biomasses were investigated and compared. When we used S. glaucescens as a biosorbent, the optima conditions of pH, Pb2+ concentration and equilibrium time were at 5, 200 mg/L and 70 min, in the range of 95.6% removal. When G. corticata was used for this process, pH 3, 15 mg/L pb2+ concentration and 50 min contact time, resulted in the maximum removal (86.4%). The equilibrium adsorption data are fitted to the Frundlich and Langmuir isotherm model, by S. glaucescens and G. corticata, respectively. The pb2+ uptake by both biosorbent was best described by the second-order rate model.

Vegetative plants of certain seaweeds were collected from the natural habitat of Kilakarai and Mandapam coast were subjected to SEM-energy dispersive spectroscopic analysis and quantified the following minerals viz., Na, Mg, Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Mn, P, Fe, Zn and Cr during summer, pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons in 2007-2008. The order of preferential accumulation of elemental composition during summer 2007 in Sargassum wightii: Ca > Mg > Na > S > Fe > Si > Cl > K > Mn; Stoechospermum marginatum: Ca > Si > S > Mg > Mn > P > Na; Gracilaria corticata: Ca > Mg > Na > Si > Cl > S > Mn > K > Fe > P; Gracilaria verrucosa: Ca > Cl > Si > Mg > Na > P > S > Mn > Fe > K and Grateloupia filicinia: Ca > Cl > P > Si > Na > Cr > K. Seasonal distribution of elemental composition in the seaweeds showed that most of the minerals were high during the summer followed post-monsoon and monsoon seasons. This could perhaps be due to an ambient concentration of these minerals was high during these seasons thereby facilitating their uptake by seaweeds.
