Opis:
The paper discusses the position of women in Romani society. The author presents the var- ious roles a romni (Romani for woman) plays. She refers to the rules of the moral and ethical code (romanipen) that significantly affects female behavior, determines the relationship be- tween females and males, and assigns women a lower position in society than men. The paper also discusses the ‘impurities’ that constitute a specific weapon Romani women can wield against men. The author observes the changes that are taking place in the world of modern romnis. They are increasingly more educated, professionally active and make independent decisions con- cerning their own future. It should be borne in mind, however, that they continue to live in a closed community that guards its traditions, language and privacy. To change the life of Romani women would mean their leaving this community and abandoning the fundamental principles of Romani life, which is difficult. Romani women do not struggle for these princi- ples to be abandoned completely, thus giving them equal rights. They continue to guard their traditions and hearth and home.

Opis:
The history of the Gypsies concentrate on the research of their language because the language itself gives proof of their Indian origin. Scientists compared romani dialects with Sanscrit and New Indo-Aryan languages, which let them acknowledge that the Gypsies probably come from India. They left India in 10th century for unknown reasons. The romani language has been an oral language despite many trials to codify it. It has gone through a basic evolutionary way of being formed spontaneously by people. Nowadays, a lack of langauge standards and loanwords cause a problem for the Gypsies all over the world to communicate. However, whole Gypsy`s culture, including a language, is a mosaic of different cultures met on their century-old journey. The romani language illustrates routes of Gypsies migration and outer influences. Comminucation in the romani let the Gypsy save their tradition, sustain group identity and strengthen inner solidarity. The language is for them a certain code, known and used almost exclusively by the Gypsies. Although it is not single and common for all their speakers, it plays a linking role.

Opis:
The submitted article is based on a fragment of a thesis entitled “The Image of the Roma and Artistic Bohemia in the Literature of the Young Poland”. The subject matter of the research is the description of two communities living in the period of the Young Poland: the Roma people, and Bohemians. The adopted research method embraces the range of broadly defined anthropological research, including analysis and interpretation of texts in a cultural context, and, above all, various aspects of life referring to Bohemians and the Roma community in Poland at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The research objective of this article is to show the similarities and differences between Bohemians of the Young Poland and the Roma living in this period, concerning originality of their lifestyle, customs, outfit and other phenomena. The in-depth analysis of the life aspects of the Roma and Bohemians from the Young Poland has demonstrated the similarities and differences between the two groups. They both functioned as “others” who had no relationship with the society. They were accompanied by a sense of loneliness, outsiderness, consciousness of rejection, tragedy of their situation and a sense of incomprehension and injustice.

Opis:
This paper deals thematically with the emancipation of Romani women in the Slovak Republic, their position in the society, as well as delimitation of their social status and role. Emphasis is put on differences in culture, cultural patterns and behavioral models, differences in the upbringing of children and the position of the Romani woman in the Romani family, compared to the society’s majority. Obstacles to the formation of an independent and emancipated Romani woman are described, for whom the concepts of emancipation and equality of rights are unknown and nearly inconceivable. Emancipation and equality of Romani women is particularly relevant in terms of opportunities for education, employment, position in the society and awareness of one’s rights. The objective is to present educated, successful, independent, and equal Romani women, enlightenment amongst the Romani population, engagement of Romani women in public and social life, and support them through various projects, etc.

Opis:
Miejsce języka i kultury Romów w Polsce.
This article presents an overview of the Romani culture and language in Poland and discusses the results of the Romani-related research in the form of an online questionnaire addressed to Poles. The first opening sections of the paper constitute an introduction into the world of Roms—their history, lifestyle and major elements of culture. We also include a brief description of Romani which, as an Indo-Aryan language, is very different from Polish. The aim of the research we describe was to determine the prevalent attitudes of Poles towards the Romani community and discover how much Polish people know about Roms. It was also our intention to identify the existing stereotypes of Gypsies and their possible sources. We hope that our research findings will support endeavors to improve Polish-Romani relations and abolish the stereotypes that upset the peaceful cohabitation of the two communities. We also subscribe to the view that cultural diversity should be both protected and popularized as it contributes to the cultural heritage of Europe.

Opis:
This contribution deals with scientific goals for whole period of this project, its characte-ristic, realisation outputs and output user and description of applied methods and their explanation. Stereotypes and prejudices against differences, nations and national minori-ties are spread in lay society and they are supported by massmedial campaign and society accepts them as the fact and the true. Long time period of spreading these prejudices can lead to ascribe individual negatives to specific group of people or minority of people. A lot of negative characters (laziness, crime and misusing of the social system, etc.) are ascribed to “Romany” or to inhabitants from settlements. We try to show if these differences are cultural or if the reason of these social pathological phenomenon is Romani’s‘ expulsion of the society. We can become society where every individual will feel like an equal hu-man being only in case we all will cooperate together. Society must be built on principles where every person knows differences and understands them. Information and knowledge Michal Kozubík,about individual cultures has a strong influence on forming attitudes and opinions. is is important when we want to remove negative stereotypes and intercultural interactions. It is not easy to accept different cultural traditions and to open our heart and mind for other people. is is the long time process and this process is not always successful. But it is the start of long process which will lead to mutual understanding, better coexistence and better every day life.
