Opis:
Introduction. The birth of a sick child, as well as the infant’s subsequent hospitalization in an neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), is undoubtedly stressful for the parents of the infant. Most studies conducted in groups of parents of such children focus on the assessment of the negative changes in their functioning due to such stress. The authors were interested in positive changes in the psychological functioning of parents that may occur after traumatic experiences. These changes are referred to as post-traumatic growth (PTG). Objective. The aim of this study was to examine whether parents experience post-traumatic growth and to determine the predictors of PTG in fathers and mothers, depending on the coping strategy adopted. Materials and method. The study involved 82 parents, whose children were previously hospitalized in neonatal intensive care unit. The methods used included the following standardized psychological tests: the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory, the Impact of Event Scale-Revised, and the COPE Inventory. Socio-demographic and medical data were also collected. Results. Analysis of the data proved that the illness and hospitalization of a child are significantly associated with the occurrence of post-traumatic growth in parents. PTG in mothers is higher than in fathers. Predictors of PTG in fathers include the use of strategies aimed at seeking emotional support and positive reinterpretation and growth, while in the group of mothers, seeking emotional support, religious coping and planning were the coping strategies used. Conclusions. Research on post-traumatic growth should be expanded. Knowledge of the predictors of positive growth in a difficult situation can contribute to the widespread implementation of primary and secondary prevention of post-traumatic stress symptoms as well as increase positive changes in individuals who have experienced traumatic events.

Opis:
The Upper Silesian Branch of the Polish Geological Society (PGS) was established in 1962 as one of the first regional branches of the PGS. Due to the specificity of the region, geologists working in Upper Silesia were most often concerned with the exploration and exploitation of hard coal in the USCB, but also undertook research on the geology of the USCB margin, polymetallic deposits, hydrocarbons, hydrogeology, and environmental protection in areas of mining activities. These problems were expressed in the topics of PGS annual meetings, field sessions and seminars. During the 60 years of activity, five PGS meetings were organized, the topics of which concerned the latest achievements in geology in the region. Already in the first years of operation of the Upper Silesian Branch of PGS, it was noticed that a special feature of this branch is the considerable dispersion of geologists working in various cities of the voivodeship. However, despite the difficulties resulting from this fact, the Upper Silesian Branch is active and it has been consolidating the scattered community of geologists in the region of Upper Silesia since its establishment.

The article presents the current state of the CNG market used as an alternative fuel for car engines. Attention was paid to European Union directives requirements and the current state of the directives’ fulfillment. The economic aspect of CNG usage was analyzed and the approximate costs of driving 10,000 km on different fuels in the last four years were presented. The PtG process which uses electric energy (hydrogen production) and carbon dioxide captured from the flue gas for the production of synthetic methane were discussed. The scheme of the SNG plant with the indication of its most important components was presented, and attention was paid to the mutual complementation of PtG technologies with carbon dioxide capture technology. The benefits of synthetic methane production are presented and the use of compressed natural gas to power engines in vehicles has been described. First, the focus was on the single-fuel use of CNG in bus and truck engines, paying particular attention to the ecological aspect of the implemented solutions. It has been shown that the use of compressed natural gas will reduce almost 100% of the particulates emission from the combustion process. The advantages and disadvantages of the alternative fuel supply are given. Next, the aspect of dual-fuel use in diesel engines was analyzed on the example of a smaller engine. The degree of reduction of harmful compounds emission from the combustion process is shown. Finally, attention was paid to the possible scale effect, referring to the number of motor vehicles in Poland.

Opis:
Years go by. Time obliterates the memory of people and events that they initiated or inspired. Events, being fruits of efforts made by individuals, frequently driven by fascination, necessity or even chance, build the history of different spheres of social life, and in the case which is of interest to us – of the discipline which is now known as remote sensing. This sketch aims to outline the origin of remote sensing in Poland and the milestones in its development during the past five decades. It does not intend to offer a detailed substantive analysis of various studies, directions of research or numerous practical applications. In the sketch’s final part, the programme of training specialists in geinformatics and remote sensing offered at the University of Warsaw is shortly discussed. In 2009, 45 years passed since the conference of geographers and specialists in aerial photographs interpretation which was held in Warsaw, at the Institute of Geography, Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences of the University of Warsaw. The conference was organised by the Laboratory of Aerial Photographs Interpretation at the Chair of Regional Geography of the Institute of Geography. The aim of the meeting – which took place in May 1964 – was to familiarise the participants with the findings of research and didactic work at academic centres abroad and at home, in order to develop a new and uniform curriculum for all geography specialisations in Poland. In addition to that, directions of research work conducted by individual laboratories of aerial photograph interpretation were also discussed. The first classes in remote sensing were conducted at geographical studies at the University of Warsaw, specialisation of regional geography, as early as the academic year 1960/1961. Similar classes were also held at the University of Wrocław, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin. In Poland, aerial photography started to be in use from the very first years of independence. In 1921-1924, photoplans on the scale of 1:10 000 covering an area of 3000 km² were made for the Polish-Soviet border areas. 1930 saw the setting up of a specialised enterprise, FOTOLOT. The establishment of the Polish Photogrammetic Society in 1930 was a momentous event as its activity played an important role in the development of photogrammetric methods based on aerial photographs, catering to different needs of the national economy. The most significant achievements in the years 1920-1939 included: a 1931 study by Roman Gryglaszewski, which described the methodology of taking and interpreting aerial photographs for land improvement works on the rivers of the Polesie region, and a 1935 study by Roman Feliński on the analysis of cities, villages and spas in the settlement organisation of the country, in which he highlighted the role of aerial photographs in studies on the country’s spatial development. In 1937-1939, aerial photographs were used in land classification and forestry. We should also mention the work of the Polish geologist Stanisław Zuber, who conducted geological surveys on the Caspian Sea and was a pioneer of using aerial photographs in geology and geotectonic research. In the inter-war period, the Lvov Polytechnic Professor Kasper Weigl, organiser of aerial photography courses, was the most eminent personality in the teaching of remote sensing. Some aerial photographs taken by the German army survived until today from the times of the Second World War; one of such photographs is an aerial photograph of Warsaw taken on 5 August 1944, at the very beginning of the Warsaw Uprising. In it, one can see areas engulfed by fi res and military operations, and the area of the ghetto, razed to the ground, in the form of a light tone. The first aerial photographs after the Second World War were taken already in 1945. The first years after the War, and later, until the end of the 1950s, were not easy for the development of remote sensing in Polish geography despite the systematic character of aerial photography of Poland at the time. In 1957, Bogodar Winid set a long-term plan for himself to change the neutral to negative approach of the geographers’ community to a new research methodology – interpretation of aerial photographs. The plan included familiarisation with the theoretical foundations of photointerpretation, development of materials for this type of classes, gradual training of specialists, gradual introduction of classes in interpretation of aerial photographs for students specialising in regional geography, and later in other specialisations and disciplines, conducting research in this field, and starting cooperation with state bodies and institutions to familiarise them with the socalled “aeromethods”. Looking at this programme fifty years later, we can say that – probably mostly owing to Bogodar Winid’s outstanding drive and energy – this programme was implemented in full. In 1966, interpretation of aerial photographs was made a compulsory subject in geographical studies. To coordinate the development of photointerpretation, on 23 October 1964 a specialised body, the Photointerpretation Committee, was set up as part of the Polish Geographical Society (PTG). A specialised series entitled Fotointerpretacja w geografii [Photointerpretation in geography] was initiated for scientific exchange purposes; currently, it is known as the Teledetekcja Środowiska [Remote sensing] series. By the end of 2008, a total of 40 volumes with 480 papers was published. The Photointerpretation Committee, later transformed into the Remote Sensing Club of the Polish Geographical Society, in the years 1964-2009 organised 19 nation-wide conferences on issues of photointerpretation and remote sensing. The range of remote sensing applications was expanded to other areas ane institutions owing to cooperation with government institutions, as a result of which OPOLIS, the Centre for Processing Aerial Photographs and Satellite Images, was set up as a part of the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography.

Opis:
W ostatnim czasie można zaobserwować rosnące zainteresowanie dodawaniem do sieci gazowej wodoru pochodzącego ze źródeł odnawialnych, tzn. technologią power-to-gas. Umożliwia ona przekształcenie wyprodukowanej energii elektrycznej do postaci wodoru i zmagazynowanie go w systemie gazowniczym.
Recently, there has been a growing interest in adding hydrogen from renewable sources to the gas network, i.e. Power-to-Gas technology. This technology makes it possible to convert the produced electrical power into hydrogen and to store it in the gas network. It may become one of the significant factors of increasing the share of renewable energy in the overall energy mix. The addition of hydrogen to natural gas will result in the presence of a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen in the gas networks through which it will reach end users, including household customers. The physicochemical properties of hydrogen, such as specific density or viscosity, differ significantly from those of natural gas components, such as methane, ethane, propane, butane, nitrogen, etc. As a result, the properties of a gas mixture, after adding hydrogen, will be significantly different from those of the natural gas currently in use. Thus, both gas network components and gas appliances of end users will be exposed to hydrogen. It is therefore necessary to ensure long-period operation of gas network components and gas appliances, within the limits of anticipated hydrogen concentrations, without deterioration in their functional properties and technical safety. This paper discusses the results of research conducted at INiG – PIB in terms of resistance to a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen (up to 23%) on: gas appliances for household and commercial use, gaseous fuels metering and billing, gaseous fuels quality, diaphragm gas meters and medium pressure regulators.

Opis:
Since 2016, Oil and Gas Institute – National Research Institute (INiG – PIB) has been conducting new research to determine the relationship between ambient temperature and gas temperature in industrial diaphragm gas meters during the measurement, and to develop new recommendations for billing systems using industrial diaphragm gas meters with a throughput of until 25 m3 /h. In the first stage, work was carried out, in which the obtained test results confirmed that the heat exchange process in an industrial diaphragm gas meter depends on the ambient temperature, the gas temperature at the inlet to the gas meter, the flow rate of the gas flowing, as well as the casing surface and the gas volume of the gas meter. In the next stage, work was carried out to determine the relationship between ambient temperature and gas temperature at the industrial diaphragm gas meter connection during the measurement. The obtained results undermined the thesis, which indicated that the gas inlet temperature is equal to the gas temperature at the depth of the gas network. In the last stage, work was carried out to determine the course of changes in gas temperature in industrial diaphragm gas meters as a function of ambient temperature and cyclical changes of the gas flow rate, which were to reflect the work of gas meters installed at customers’ premises. The analysis of the obtained test results once again showed a strong dependence of the gas temperature inside industrial diaphragm gas meters on the ambient temperature, but also on the flow rate of gas. The obtained results of laboratory tests will be used to carry out a thermodynamic description of the heat exchange process in an industrial diaphragm gas meter, which would allow the determination of the gas billing temperature as a function of the ambient temperature, the temperature of the inflowing gas and the gas flow rate. The calculated gas temperature values could be used to determine the temperature correction factors applicable when settling gas consumers billed on the basis of measurement with the use of industrial diaphragm gas meters.
