Opis:
Ceramic membranes are among one of the most promising candidates for membrane applications, owing to their excellent resistance to mechanical, chemical, and thermal stresses. These advantages make them an attractive filter material. An additional benefit which is extremely important for the industry, is their possibility of continuous operation at high efficiency while maintaining constant transmembrane pressure. Due to the inorganic material from which they are made, ceramic membranes have the possibility of being cleaned by steam sterilization and are resistant to micro-organisms. Although, due to low production costs, ceramic membranes are one of the most cost-effective membrane filtration technologies they are prone to substantial fouling. When used, a layer of contaminants is formed on the active surface, often reducing or completely filling the membrane pores resulting in fouling and concentration polarization. These phenomena cause a decreased efficiency of the process, which leads to the need for the membrane to be replaced with a new one. However, ceramic membranes have the possibility of being regenerated through a series of activities and the use of various chemical agents. The use of regenerated membranes would provide the opportunity to reduce exploitation costs. Although membrane regeneration does not guarantee a return to the initial parameters, it does allow for the recovery of high permeation flow. The aim of the research was to compare operating parameters of the ceramic membranes after multiple use and longtime storage with different condition of storage.

Opis:
New generation of membrane materials can play role in regeneration process in living organism e.g. creation of optimal conditions for regeneration of bone tissue (GBR/GTR technique) or defected peripheral nerve (GNR technique). However, biodegradable polymeric materials which are now widely used in GNR technique (PLA, PCL, collagen) does not have satisfactory mechanical properties such as strength (RM) or Young's modulus (E) because it is difficult to control their porosity [1,2]. Materials suitable for nerve regeneration should exhibit electrical properties which stimulate the regeneration [3]. The main idea of the guided nerve regeneration is utilisation of a membrane separating two tissues i.e. defected nerve tissue and connective tissue. Inside the defected nerve tissue surrounded by the membrane should be present factors influencing the regeneration process such as: ECM protein, nervotrofic factors. On the other hand, the membrane should act as a barrier for fibroblast cells inflowing into the defected area. The work presents results of investigations on porous nanocomposite materials basing on bioresorbable aliphatic polyesters i.e. poly-(L/DL)-lactide and carbon nanotubes (CNT). All materials i.e. nanocomposite foils and porous materials were prepared using synthetic co-polymer of L/DL-lactide with L/DL ratio of 80/20 from Purac®. The polymer had the FDA attestation confirming its biocompability. As the nanofillers, two types of CNTs produced by Nanostructured and Amorphous Materials (Inc. Huston, USA) were used: MWCNTs (multi-wall carbon nanotubes; diameter 10-30 nm and length 1-2 μm) and SWCNTs (single-wall carbon nanotubes; diameter 0.7-2 nm and length 15-30 μm). Nanocomposite membrane materials (PLDLA/0.5% wt. MWCNTs and PLDLA/0.5% wt. SWCNTs) were prepared using combined methods: phase inversion and freeze-drying. Porous microstructure of the nanocomposites was investigated using SEM/EDS. It was found, that the presence of the CNT influenced shape, size (5-50 μm) and distribution of pores in the material (total porosity of PLDLA/ MWCNTs was about ~65% and PLDLA/S WCNTs was about ~35%). The nanoadditives increased mechanical properties of the membrane materials. For example addtition of the SWCNTs increased the membrane strength (RM) form 16 to 24 MPa. Physicochemical properties of the materials surface were investigated by means of wettability and surface energy measurements. It was shown that dispersion part of surface free energy decreased when SWCNTs were used as additives (from 4.5 mm/mJ PLDLA membrane to 0.7 mm/mJ PLDLA/SWCNTs), while in the case of the MWCNTs addition dispersion part of surface energy increased from 4.5 mm/mJ to 6.9 mm/mJ. Such PLDLA-based materials modified with CNTs (MWCNTs, SWCNTs) may be an attractive support for adhering cells. SWCNTs were more suitable nanoad- ditives for PLDLA-matrix membranes than MWCNTs, because such membranes were stronger, hydrophilic and much more bioactive.

Opis:
One of the major challenges in biomaterials and tissue engineering is to guide the cell differentiation to the specific phenotype, therefore allow the formation of the tissue of certain type. This can be achieved by manipulating the structural, geometrical and chemical characteristics of the tissue engineering constructs. In our studies we concentrated on the chemical modifications of the polymer based materials for tissue engineering. The primary aim of our study was to incorporate nano size hydroxyapatite (n-HAp) crystals into the polymer fibres and form membranes, which are a core to the construction of novel scaffolds for tissue regeneration. We hypothesised that n-HAp will significantly improve the bioactivity of the polymer based membranes due to the presence of chemical cues. We developed a simple method to fabricate PLDL/n- HAp composite membranes using electrospinning process. The investigation showed that the incorporation of the n-HAp particles in the polymer spinning solution induced changes in the material surface morphology. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of apatite on the surface of the membrane' fibers. The bioactivity analysis, which was based on SEM observation of the membranes surface, showed that after only 7 days immersion in SBF, the PLDL/n-HAp -membranes were completely covered by the apatite layer. This was not observed for pure PLDL membranes.

Opis:
Two types of composite imprinted membranes, i.e., composite membrane comprised of D-Phe imprinted beads and D-Phe imprinted membrane or DCM and composite membrane comprised of L-Phe imprinted beads and L-Phe imprinted membranes or LCM, were synthesized by phase inversion technique after a uniform dispersion of beads within the polymeric solutions using simple physico-mechanical process. The assemblies of the prepared DCM, LCM and control membranes were employed in ultrafiltration for chiral separation of D, L-Phenylalanine racemate solution. DCM and LCM showed an improved adsorption capacity (0.334 mg g-1 and 0.365 mg g-1 respectively), and adsorption selectivity (2.72 and 2.98 respectively). However, the percent rejection of the template and counter enantiomer were lower than that of control membranes. Compared to control membrane, the DCM and LCM showed inverse permselectivity. These composite membranes having better adsorption and separation ability for Phenylalanine racemate solution will be suitable in the future for various other applications.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to prepare and evaluate the properties of a new membrane dedicated for the treatment of bone defects in periodontology according to guided tissue regeneration (GTR) technique. The first part of this study was to prepare the membrane from resorbable poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) and verify its microstructure. Biological evaluation was lead using the cells interesting from the point of view of GTR, e.g. human fibroblasts and mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC). It was found that the obtained membrane has asymmetric microstructure and defined pore size. Cell culture experiments show that the membrane is biocompatible with fibroblasts and hMSC. Both types of cell proliferated well on the membrane. HMSC cultured on the membrane exhibited better osteogenic differentiation and higher mineralization as compared to control tissue culture polystyrene.

Physically crosslinked membranes were prepared by treating chitosan (Ch) with pentasodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) at different reaction conditions. The equilibrium swelling ratio, Seq, of Ch/TPP membranes in water, buffer and salt solutions at 37 C were determined. The experimental data indicated, that Seq depended on pH of buffer solution and type and concentration of salt solution. Swelling capacity in water depended on the content of TPP ions in the membrane and crosslinking density

Chemically and physically crosslinked chitosan hydrogel membranes were obtained by treatment of chitosan (Ch) with glutaraldehyde (GA) and with GA and subsequently with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP). The formation of covalent and ionic crosslinks between Ch, GA and ionic TPP was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The studies of dynamic swelling behaviour of synthesized membranes in buffer solutions of different pH (1.0, 7.4, 9.0) indicated that the swelling process obeyed a second-order kinetics. Values of an apparent swelling rate constant for Ch/GA and Ch/GA/TPP membranes were of the same order for acidic and neutral swelling media but they increased for alkaline solutions.

The presence of toxic heavy metals in industrial wastewater is a serious pollution problem. The ability of chitosan membranes as an adsorbent for cadmium ions in aqueous solution was studied. Experiments were carried out as function of contact time and concentration of cadmium ions. This study has shown that chitosan is capable of removing cadmium from aqueous solution. The removal efficiency depends on reaction time and concentration of cadmium. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were applied to describe the isotherms and isotherm constants. Equilibrium data agreed very well with the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of the Langmuir isotherm equation was 94 mg/g and the Langmuir adsorption equilibrium constant was 1.6 × 10-3 dm3/mg at 25 °C.
