In the present investigation, 15 first term university students were faced with 80 context-based idioms in English (L2) and Swedish (L1) respectively, 30 of which were in the source domain of animals, commonly used in both languages, and asked to explain their meaning. The idioms were of varying frequency and transparency. Three main research questions were thus addressed:1. How well do students master idioms in their L2 as compared to their L1?2. How do (a) degrees of transparency, (b) idiom frequency and (c) the choice of source domain affect students’ L1 and L2 comprehension?3. To what extent is context used when interpreting L1 and L2 idioms?Results show that while the frequency of an idiom does not appear to play a part in whether it is comprehended or not in either language, the degree of transparency is of great importance in students’ L2. Also, students make extensive use of context in their L2.

This study is an attempt to explore proficient Taiwanese senior high school students’ difficulties and strategies in L1 (Chinese) and L 2 (English) Reading. A total of eight proficient students participated in this study. An in-depth face to face interview was adopted for data collection. Thanks to the enthusiastic response of the students, we could gain an overall understanding of their reading difficulties and strategies in Chinese and English reading. This study shows that there are some similarities and differences between Chinese and English reading perceptions. Based on the findings of this study, classroom teachers will be able to design more effective reading strategy curricula and instruction geared to their students’ needs.

This paper investigates native and non-native speech rhythm in the speech of Polish learners of English at an intermediate/upper-intermediate level. More specifically, it attempts to explore the relationship between rhythm measures scores in L1 Polish and L2 English within individual speakers. Phonological vowel reduction in terms of duration is present in English and crucial for the perception and acoustic measurements of linguistic rhythm. Polish, on the other hand, has no phonological reduction of that kind. The acquisition of L2 vowel reduction is highly determined by the level of language proficiency and influences non-native rhythmic patterns. The study tests six speech rhythm measures: %V, ΔV, ΔC, VarcoV, VarcoC and nPVI-V in two tempos: normal and fast. The results show that most of these measures are positively and significantly correlated with each other between L1 Polish and L2 English across the subjects and for two tempos, although to a different degree. Highly significantly correlation has been noted for %V and ΔC in fast tempo. Moderate significant correlations between the two languages are observed for ΔV, ΔC (normal tempo), VarcoV and nPVI in fast tempo.

Although various dimensions of speech fluency have so far generated a great deal of research interest, very few accounts have tackled the issue of the relationship between L1 and L2 fluency. Also, little empirical evidence has been provided to support the claim that language users are more fluent in their mother tongue than in a foreign/second language. This study examines the fluency gap between L1 and L2 fluency using a battery of objectively quantifiable temporal measures of speed and breakdown fluency. It also attempts to identify those temporal fluency variables which are affected by the individual way of speaking rather than the degree of automatisation of speech processing and which underlie oral performance both in L1 and L2. The analysis draws on transcriptions of elicited speech samples in L1 (Polish) and L2 (English).

Opis:
Two opposing views exist on the structure of the mental lexicon and the usage of the regular and irregular inflection. According to the first one, all inflected forms are stored in the lexicon (Seidenberg/Joanisse 2005). The opposing view (Pinker/Ullman 2002) holds that regular forms are inflected by the application of morphological rules. Longitudinal data from four children are examined in the present study. The children were first exposed to German as their second language in the early childhood. The predictions of both models of the mental lexicon are investigated in the collected data. The results show that the use of past participles by children acquiring German as their early second language can provide some insights into the structure of the mental lexicon. However, the effect of age at which learners are first exposed to their second language has to be taken into account.

Objet : l'usage que les italophones font de la dérivation modificative italienne afin de comprendre les besoins de formation en L2. Protocole: Un dessin affiche des oppositions dimensionnelles (petit homme vs. homme grand) et qualitatives (chien gentil vs. chien méchant) parmi les référents, ce qui devrait motiver l’usage des suffixes modificatifs. Quelques résultats : – utilisation fréquente des suffixes diminutifs -ino/-etto/-ello et de l’augmentatif -one ; – priorité donnée aux formes modificatives nominales, au signifié dimensionnel et aux modificatifs lexicalisés. Conclusion : en L2 il faudrait donner la priorité à l’apprentissage des constructions les plus simples, productives et fréquentes.
Subject. The student’s needs in Italian as a Foreign Language on the basis of how the native Italian speakers use the modifying morphology. Protocol. An image displays some dimensional oppositions (small man / big man) and qualitative oppositions (friendly dog / naughty dog) among the referents, which could be translated using the modifying suffixes. Some results. – The most common modifying morphemes used are the diminutive suffixes -ino/-etto/-ello, the augmentative -one. – The nouns are the most frequently modifying words. The dimensional sense and the lexicalized modifying forms are privileged. Conclusion. The most simple, productives and frequent modifying constructions should be favored in Foreign Language learning.

In line with our previous work on L1 (Hebrew, as the source language)/L2 (French, as the target language) TAM (time-aspect-mood) discrepancies in FFL classes in Israel – for instance, divergences related to the past tense system – the present paper pursues the study of the conditional mood, especially the study of the semantics related to its modalities. If Hebrew-speaking learners of FFL assimilate effectively theoretical aspects relevant to conditional modalities, they struggle to put this knowledge into practice. The reason is that, just like for indicative compound tenses expressing an extra level of completion or anteriority, Hebrew uses lexical denotation (adverbial expressions) instead of morphological devices. While reviewing the discrepancies between L1 and L2 relevant to the use of linguistic modality, this paper aims at rendering accessible – through a metaphorization of modality by means of linguistic approximation – French conditional modalities to Hebrew-speaking students, for whom the most natural option of meaning expression is the use of lexical components instead of verbal morphology.

Given a graph G and a vertex coloring c, G is called l-radio connected if between any two distinct vertices u and v there is a path such that coloring c restricted to that path is an l-radio coloring. The smallest number of colors needed to make G l-radio connected is called the l-radio connection number of G. In this paper we introduce these notions and initiate the study of connectivity through radio colored paths, providing results on the 2-radio connection number, also called L(2, 1)-connection number: lower and upper bounds, existence problems, exact values for known classes of graphs and graph operations.

The present study, in the form of a questionnaire, aims to analyse students’ subjective perception of directionality in translation. Additionally, it places a particular emphasis on the aspects which are perceived as difficult in each direction. Although for most students, L2 translation is more cognitively demanding, and they prefer to translate into L1, such preferences may change as the result of the amount of translation training. Students with a longer span in translation training frequently encounter more problems in L1 translation and may not have any preferred direction of translation. Nevertheless, the importance of practicing translating into L2 has been emphasized in many aspects, like expanding L2 competence or translation market demand; additionally, it is also a preferred language of translation for some students. Vocabulary and terminology have been described as the most problematic in both directions of translation. Other aspects which pose many problems and require some training are both L1 and L2 grammar as well as punctuation.

An L(2, 1, 1)-labeling of a graph G is an assignment of non-negative integers (labels) to the vertices of G such that adjacent vertices receive labels with difference at least 2, and vertices at distance 2 or 3 receive distinct labels. The span of such a labelling is the difference between the maximum and minimum labels used, and the minimum span over all L(2, 1, 1)-labelings of G is called the L(2, 1, 1)-labeling number of G, denoted by λ2,1,1(G). It was shown by King, Ras and Zhou in [The L(h, 1, 1)-labelling problem for trees, European J. Combin. 31 (2010) 1295–1306] that every tree T has Δ2(T) − 1 ≤ λ2,1,1(T) ≤ Δ2(T), where Δ2(T) = maxuv∈E(T)(d(u) + d(v)). And they conjectured that almost all trees have the L(2, 1, 1)-labeling number attain the lower bound. This paper provides some sufficient conditions for λ2,1,1(T) = Δ2(T). Furthermore, we show that the sufficient conditions we provide are also necessary for trees with diameter at most 6.

This paper proposes a model for the analysis of spelling mistakes that Slovene speakers make in written production in Italian as FL/L2. This model is based on a grid produced by other authors and adapted for the specific needs of the present research. The grid comprises four categories: phonological errors, non-phonological errors, phonetic errors, and punctuation errors. Each category is further divided into sub-categories. The aim of the research is to discover which category yields more errors and what their origin is, in order to propose scientific bases for improvements in teaching Italian to Slovene students. The conclusion is that students and teachers have to deal with first-language interference as well as negative transfer from English as FL/L2, another foreign language that students acquire, and universal strategies comprising generalisation, simplification, and regularisation.
Il presente articolo propone un modello per l’analisi di errori ortografici che L1 sloveni commettono nella produzione scritta in italiano L2/LS. Questo modello si basa su una griglia ideata da altri autori e adattata alle esigenze specifiche della ricerca presentata in questo contributo. La griglia comprende quattro categorie: errori fonologici, non fonologici, fonetici e di interpunzione. Ogni categoria è ulteriormente suddivisa in sottocategorie. L’obiettivo del presente contributo è scoprire quale categoria sia la più rappresentata e quale sia l’origine per proporre delle basi scientifiche sulle quali si potrà migliorare l’insegnamento dell’italiano a slovenofoni. La conclusione è che gli apprendenti e i docenti si devono confrontare con l’interferenza dalla L1, con il transfer negativo dall’inglese L2/LS e con le strategie universali comprendenti la generalizzazione, la semplificazione e la regolarizzazione.

This study investigates the production of vowels in unstressed syllables by advanced German learners of English in comparison with native speakers of Standard Southern British English. Two acoustic properties were measured: duration and formant structure. The results indicate that duration of unstressed vowels is similar in the two groups, though there is some variation depending on the phonetic context. In terms of formant structure, learners produce slightly higher F1 and considerably lower F2, the difference in F2 being statistically significant for each learner. Formant values varied as a function of context and orthographic representation of the vowel.

An $L(2, 1)$-labeling of a graph $ \Gamma $ is an assignment of non-negative integers to the vertices such that adjacent vertices receive labels that differ by at least 2, and those at a distance of two receive labels that differ by at least one. Let $ \lambda_2^1 (\Gamma) $ denote the least $ \lambda $ such that $ \Gamma $ admits an $ L(2, 1) $-labeling using labels from $ \{ 0, 1, . . ., \lambda \} $. A Cayley graph of group $G$ is called a circulant graph of order $n$, if $ G = \mathbb{Z}_n$. In this paper initially we investigate the upper bound for the span of the $L(2, 1)$-labeling for Cayley graphs on cyclic groups with “large” connection sets. Then we extend our observation and find the span of $L(2, 1)$-labeling for any circulants of order $n$.
