- On the eve of the 100th anniversary of the publication of a brochure “The fiasco of the German policy towards Poland” (1919) by Hellmut von Gerlach. Consideration of the limits of an argumentative deconstruction of stereotypes This article is an analysis of a political brochure published in 1919 entitled The fiasco of German policy towards Poland (original title Der Zusammenbruch der deutschen Polenpolitik) written by a well-known German politician, publicist and peace activist Hellmut von Gerlach. The author’s profile and the main message of the brochure, in which Hellmut von Gerlach advocates a change of the paradigm in Polish-German relations in favour of a policy of understanding, is presented. A particular emphasis is placed on the strategy of the deconstruction of German stereotypes about Poland and Poles that prevailed in public opinion in Germany during the “long nineteenth century.” Conclusions are also formulated on the limits of the deconstruction of national stereotypes solely by way of argumentation.
