Dans le siècle où les théories néo-platoniciennes imposent la prééminence de la poésie sur tout autre forme de discours, le mépris dirigé contre la poésie en général ou contre certains poètes en particulier accompagne la célébration des Lettres. Le corpus poétique protestant du XVIe siècle est souvent interprété à la lumière de l’idéal de la poésie religieuse (Véronique Ferrer, Julien Gœury, Christophe Bourgeois) ou du thème de la uanitas propre à la poésie morale baroque (Terence Cave, Michel Jeanneret, Michèle Clément). Dans le présent article, je m’efforce de présenter le mépris des Lettres, ou plus précisément des vers profanes comme un élément constituant d’une identité poétique calviniste à travers une étude de trois moments significatifs : la publication des premiers textes méta-discursifs de Jean Calvin et de Théodore de Bèze vers la moitié du XVIe siècle, la « querelle des Discours » des années 1562-1563, et finalement la publication des recueils protestants individuels et collectifs dans les années 1570 et 1580.
In the century in which neo-Platonic theories impose the predominance of poetry over any other form of discourse, the contempt aimed at poetry in general or against certain poets in particular coexist with the celebration of letters. The corpus of the sixteenth century Calvinist poetry is often interpreted in the light of religious ideals (Véronique Ferrer, Julien Gœury, Christophe Bourgeois) or the theme of uanitas characteristic of baroque literature (Terence Cave, Michel Jeanneret, Michèle Clément). In this article, I present the contempt of letters, or more specifically of the profane verses, as a constituent element of Calvinist poetic identity through a study of three significant moments: the publication of the first meta-discursive texts by John Calvin and Theodore Beza in the mid-sixteenth century, the so-called “Quarrel of Discourses” in 1562-1563, and finally the publication of several important individual and collective volumes of Calvinist poetry in the 1570s and 1580s. - Źródło:
