Chronic diseases determine children’s functioning in different areas of their life. It is caused very often by unclear experiences which are result of typical disease unit (such as physical pain, activity restriction), impact into environment (feeling of danger, fear, physical suffering).Very important seems to be here unit’s activity which play main role in coping process1. Because of many experiences child gain knowledge referring to concrete events strictly connected to therapy process. Basing on this child have a possibility to choose proven strategies which are foundation to effective coping with disease and give possibility to gain wellbeing, efficiency, independence which lead to effective development.

Opis:
Life is of great value to any human being and can be considered to be a fundamental concept. It has a determined temporal dimension, although it remains unknown to a given individual. An overview of relevant literature demonstrates that much has been written on the subject of health and ability and it has been quite extensively discussed. Yet this concept remains valid because its meaning is constantly changing. People are not able to completely free themselves from diseases/disabilities. During one’s lifetime one is exposed to periodic or permanent difficulties or limitations. Human life involves functioning on the border of health and disease, full ability and disability. It is important, however, how one deals with difficulties that one must face, who one will meet on one’s way and what kind of help will be offered. This paper aims to present a theoretical framework of health and disease, including chronic disease and disability.

The purpose of the studies was to search for personality correlates of psychosocial adjustment of chronic disease patients. The group of 246 male patients with coronary heart disease was included into the studies. Correlations were analysed between the intensity of some selected personal traits, the intensity of limitations resulting from the disease process and its therapy, and the level of patients’ psychosocial adjustment and well-being. The studies have confirmed that the neuroticism, extraversion and openness are the essential correlates of the adjustment. In order to predict the psychosocial adjustment of chronic patients accurately, it is necessary to consider some variables connected with the disease. They can be the independent predicators of the adjustment, they can also modify the adjustment level when interacting with personality variables.

This paper attempts to synthesize the theoretical knowledge and generalize the empirical results regarding self – perception in children with chronic disease. It should be emphasized that the process of self – perception and own possibilities and restrictions in different areas of life is very complicated, long lasting and multifactorial, especially in children, taking into consideration the characteristics of particular disease entities.

It is worth looking at chronic illness with its pain, suffering and increasing limitations from the perspective of time. By time we mean subjective time relating to the perception and dynamics of the malady in the patient’s impressions and the role which time plays in the structuring of the patient’s life and experience. The main focus of this article is the experience of progressive kidney failure (uraemia), a condition which requires regular dialysis or kidney transplantation. Due to its specific crises, hopes and periods of waiting, painstaking medical procedures lasting many hours and turning points in the disease’s trajectory, time and its passage are a particularly adequate instrument with which to analyse the experiences of patients with uraemia. These experiences are discussed against the backdrop of selected elements of health care and attitudes towards transplantation which provide the social context for patients’ struggle with illness.

Purpose: To analyse the frequency of chronic diseases among Romani people who are sixty and older as well as their health-promoting lifestyle. Materials and methods: This research was conducted as a descriptive study between January 2015 and June 2015. The study included 98 elderly Romani people lived in Samsun, Turkey. The study data were collected using the questionnaire included 22 questions along with the Health-promoting Lifestyle Scale II. The statistical analysis of the data was made using percentage means, t-test, correlation, and ANOVA test. Results: The average age of the participating Romani people was 66.7±5.3. Of these Romani people, 83.7% had a chronic disease, and 80.6% had a medication that they used regularly. The mean score of the Romani citizens in the study sample on the Health-promoting Lifestyle Scale was 115.98±15.82. They obtained their highest score on the inter-personal relations sub-dimension and the lowest score on the stress management sub-dimension of the scale. There was a statistical correlation between the Romani people's gender, social insurance, income level, education level, family type, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure monitoring and their scores on the scale (p<0.05). The study found that a health-promoting lifestyle did not affect the frequency of chronic diseases (p˃0.05). Conclusions: This study proved that the Romani people had risks of chronic diseases, did not attach sufficient importance to a health-promoting lifestyle and their health-promoting lifestyle is weaker compared to the elders in the rest of the population.

The aim of the study is to determine the effects of a multidisciplinary lifestyle intervention (including a short period of physical exercise) on some health-related variables, particularly on blood pressure, in an overweight/obese adult group. The main outcome was blood pressure lowering. The study involved 378 subjects affected by obesity or type 2 diabetes. The intervention included exercise, nutrition and psychological aspects. Before and after the intervention, several anthropometrics, cardiovascular risk related measures (height, body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, body composition and WHTR index) and physical exercise measures (aerobic capacity, flexibility and dynamic muscle strength) were evaluated through fitness tests. We observed a significant reduction in: blood pressure values, body weight, BMI, waist circumference, WHTR, fat mass and an improvement of fat free mass and physical exercise measures. The C.U.R.I.A.Mo. multidisciplinary approach is effective for reducing blood pressure, after relatively few exercise sessions (three weeks), particularly in patients with hypertension. The intervention can ameliorate the health status and physical performance in the short term, in normotensive and hypertensive adult subjects with overweight/obesity.

The article contains theoretical reflections on diabetes as a chronic disease, on the lifestyle and its conditioning. The author presents results of her own research on the lifestyle of people with type 2 diabetes. Based on achieved results the prevailing and the most widespread style has been determined as ‘Avoiding existential choices,’ accompanied by alternative styles: ‘Active in the network of restrictions,’ ‘On the border between dedication and sacrifice,’ ‘Focus on enjoying pleasures of life and “using life”, ’ adopted by few.

Chronic disease is often connected with huge dose of uncertainty. Some sick people suffer from isolation from family and lack of other intimate relationships. Patients struggling with chronic disease seek variety forms of support. One form of coping with a chronic illness is writing about emotions. The main contribution of this article is to present selected forms of coping with chronic disease through expressive writing. Writing a blog is an increasingly popular way of describing patient’s experiences of cancer. It allows patients to express negative emotions such sadness, guilt and loneliness without speaking aloud. We analyzed hundreds of blogs written by women with cancer on most popular websites in Poland in 2016 year. Very important for patients with chronic disease is how they talk about illness and how they treat it. The growing importance of blogging, as well as the increasing availability of various forms of blogging motivate people to try blogging as a way of coping with cancer. It is becoming increasingly a real treatment for cancer patients.

Introduction and objective. The rapid aging of the human population is an increasing challenge to public health. Effective strategies are required to prevent disability and dependency of the elderly. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of body weight on the prevalence of disability and chronic diseases among 60–80-year-old people living in south-eastern Poland. Materials and method. The study included 1,800 randomly selected people aged 60–80 years living in the Podkarpackie region of south-eastern Poland. Respondents, holders of a – personal identification number (PESEL), were randomly drawn by the Ministry of Interior and Administration (MSWiA) in Poland. The study was conducted in the form of a face-to-face interview at the respondent’s residence. The WHODAS 2.0 questionnaire was used to assess disability and functioning. Socio-demographic data were also collected, and the body weight measured in 5% of the respondents after completion of the study. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistica 10. Results. Respondents with Body Mass Index (BMI)<18.5 and BMI ≥35.0 had significantly higher disability levels than those in the normal weight and overweight categories. The greatest limitations were found in participating in everyday life, household activities, getting along and mobility. There was also a statistically significant relationship between BMI and the number of chronic diseases (p<0.001). Conclusions. When planning a healthcare strategy for people aged 60–80 living in Poland, additional support should be provided to those at risk in the categories of underweight and obesity. The obtained findings indicate that the health behaviour of seniors should be assessed – especially regarding their diet and eating habits, physical activity, and participation in social life – in order to tailor prevention programmes specifically to their needs.

Background. Obesity is well known cause of various diseases. However, there are only a few studies which enable to compare directly the magnitude of risk in different groups of chronic diseases. Objectives. The aim of presented paper was to identify a magnitude of the risk of chronic diseases attributable to overweight and obesity on the basis of data on weight and height self-reported by respondents. Material and methods. The survey was conducted among 402 Warsaw inhabitants selected by non-random method. Overweight and obesity was measured by Body Mass Index (BMI) on the basis of the data of weight and height reported by respondents. According to WHO criteria the normal weight is defined as BMI 18.5 - 24.9 kg/m2, overweight as BMI 25.0 - 29.9 kg/m2, and obesity as BMI 30 kg/m2 or more. The following groups of chronic diseases were included: cancer, diabetes and other endocrine diseases, mental disorders, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, digestive diseases, arthritis and allergy disorder. Results. Obesity measured by self-reported method was recognised as significant risk factor for diabetes (OR=9.6, Cl: 2.0152.8), respiratory diseases (OR=10.6, Cl: 3,0-333,7), cardiovascular diseases (OR=5.2, Cl: 1.9-108.3), arthritis (OR=6.3, Cl: 2.4-266.7), digestive diseases (OR=3,8, Cl: 1.3-83.6) and mental disorders (OR=5.8, Cl: 1.5-29.1), while overweight significantly increased the risk of diabetes (OR=4.4, Cl: 1.2-10.8), respiratory diseases (OR=3.2, Cl: 1.4-22.2), cardiovas- culardiseases (OR=2.9, Cl: 1.2-6.4) andarthritis (OR=3.0, Cl: 1.1-9.6) Conclusions. Our findings showed that data on weight and height collected by survey method provide some information about the magnitude of the risk regarding particular groups of diseases attributable to overweight and obesity, nevertheless, underestimation ofBMI calculated in this way should be taken into account.
Wprowadzenie. Otyłość jest dobrze poznaną przyczyną różnych chorób. Jednakże istnieje jedynie niewiele badań, które umożliwiają bezpośrednie porównanie wielkości ryzyka w różnych grupach chorób przewlekłych. Cel. Materiał i metody. Włączono następujące grupy chorób przewlekłych: cukrzyca i inne choroby przemiany materii, choroby nowotworowe, układu krążenia, układu oddechowego, układu trawiennego, reumatyczne, zaburzenia psychiczne i alergiczne. Wyniki. OR=9.6, CI: 2.0-152.8), chorób układu oddechowego (OR=10.6, CI: 3.0-333.7), chorób układu krążenia (OR=5.2, CI: 1.9-108.3), chorób reumatycznych (OR=6.3, CI: 2.4-266.7), chorób układu trawiennego (OR=3.8, CI: 1.3-83.6) i zaburzeń psychicznych (OR=5.8, CI: 1.5-29.1). Nadwaga znacząco zwiększała ryzyko cukrzycy (OR=4.4, CI: 1.2-10.8), chorób układu oddechowego (OR=3.2, CI: 1.4-22.2), chorób układu krążenia (OR=2.9, CI: 1.2-6.4) i chorób reumatycznych(OR=3.0, CI: 1.1-9.6). Wnioski. Wyniki niniejszych badań pokazały, że dane o wadze i wzroście zebrane metodą ankietową mogą w pewnym stopniu dostarczyć informacji o wielkości ryzyka, jakie można przypisać nadwadze i otyłości, niemniej jednak należy uwzględnić niedoszacowanie BMI obliczonego w ten sposób.

Opis:
Maintaining high levels of well-being in the face of a chronic disease requires utilization of many psychosocial resources in the coping process. The efficacy of this process depends on using coping strategies that fit to the specificity of a particular chronic disease. The aim of this study was to show the relationships between well-being and coping strategies, and less studied constructs such as resiliency and personal empowerment among people with diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. The study comprised 100 participants (59 with type I diabetes and 41 with rheumatoid arthritis) who completed a set of questionnaires measuring wellbeing, strategies of coping with stress, resiliency and personal empowerment. As expected, there was a significant indirect effect of resiliency on well-being through mediators such as personal empowerment and disease-specific coping strategies. The results support the significant determinants of well-being among people with chronic diseases. They also indicated a more complex structure of the variables in which resiliency plays a major role for the well-being by the means of coping strategies and personal empowerment.
