Opis:
The aim of this article is to analyze and interpret way in which a topos of Cain was evoked in literary works and other texts of culture in the light of the concept of transgression. An approach adapted in analysis will be inspired by comparative hermeneutics, yet not only literary contexts will be taken into consideration, but also religious, philosophical, and scientific ones. In the very structure of the topos one can discern a series of binary oppositions, which become valuated in various ways in different historical contexts. It is above all the opposition between destructive and constructive component of the theme. Interpretations of the topos in the works of George Byron, Władysław Orkan, and Jerzy Andrzejewski are discussed deeper. The analysis leads to the conclusion that in the historical development of a significant change in its valuation is taking place. Regarded as a symbol of evil in the Middle Ages, it is ennobled as a patron of rebels, reformers and creators in the twentieth century.

This study is devoted to the problem of the appearance of variants in the translation of the text of the Holy Scriptures on the example of the analysis of Ps. 2:12. The aim of the study is to find out the reason for the occurrence of discrepancies in the translation of this psalm. The significance of the work lies in identifying the genesis of modern Russian translations of Ps. 2:12, as well as the reasons for linguistic difficulties that arise when translating the Hebrew and Greek Psalms into other languages. The results of the research may be used when translating and commenting on the studied text. The main conclusion is that the reason for the appearance of a “dark” place for the modern reader in the second psalm – “Accept the punishment, may the Lord not be angry” – stems from the polysemy of the Greek word “παιδείας”, which can be translated as “education, training, culture’ as well as “youth”. The Hebrew translators have interpreted this verse as “worship purely”, “worship with purity”, “arm yourself with purity”. Some of the translation options for this verse are based on the Septuagint, which gives a literal translation into Greekof the Hebrew text: “Accept / keep the lesson”. The variety of translation options for Ps.2:12results from the polysemy in the Hebrew language, superimposed on the borrowed meaningof the word “bar” from the Chaldean language and on the Greek ambiguity in the recipientlanguage; later on, the complexity of this verse increased even more due to the literalism of the Church Slavic translation. The value of this research lies in comparing the variants of the Russian translations of Ps. 2:12 and clarifying their history.

The present article is the result of comparative studies devoted to some preselected versions of the Bible with a focus on pragmatics and semantics. The conducted research was guided by the following assumption: the meaning of Biblical texts is directly related to pragmatism but despite similarities and differences between the analyzed versions of the Bible, it is possible to find such divergences in relation not only to pragmatics but to semantics, as well. This article is preoccupied with analysis of the structure of the Bible, ways of its translation, the most popular English and Polish versions of Holy Scripture, and the ways in which some words have been translated. The paper has been written on the basis of Biblical source materials, the literature of the discipline, and journals as well as with the help of WWW and ORG websites, that deal with the Bible and its translation. The research method employed is strictly comparative and applied to juxtapose equivalent English and Polish words as used in the Bible.

The culture of German language owes much to the dynamic development and permanent work on translation of the Bible. The national character of the translations, which accompanied the waves of evangelization also matched the phases of the devel-opment of German language, and had an accordingly huge influence on the literary works of the German speaking territories. Since the gothic translations a continual tendency may be observed that the Bible has to reflect, as precisely and accurately as possible, the mentality and notions of the inhabitants of the German lands. The many sections of Christianity which existed in Europe, decided about the diversity of transla-tions and interpretations of the Holy Scripture.

The contemporary phase of the investigation of the religious sources of Taras Shevchenko’s art is not a well analysed aspect of literature studies, even though Biblical motifs in the works of this Ukrainian poet are still an inexhaustible source for literary research. The works of Taras Shevchenko contributed to the artistic embodiment of the Christian topography and inspired the artistic interpretation of the basics of patristics. Nowadays the topic of the Bible and Shevchenko is analysed in its interconnected aspects: general cultural, hermeneutic, linguistic, discourse and sociological, identification and descriptive, comparative, intersemiotic, religious, etc. On the basis of the reception strategies of translation studies as part of comparative studies and cultural approaches, embracing the wide circle of social codes, conventions and representations, the article focuses on the typology of Shevchenko’s poetic adaptations of psalms in the context of Ukrainian literature, and religious, ceremonial and spiritual traditions.

This paper discusses translations of biblical passages into Kashubian, which originated in the Lutheran circles between the 16th and the 19th centuries, followed by translations made in the Catholic circles in the 20th and the 21st centuries. The history of these translations has been divided into two periods: “old translations” and “contemporary translations.” The former comprise various bibli[1]cal texts preserved in manuscripts and printed monuments, which came into being between 1586 and the second half of the 19th century. The fundamental texts of this period include the works by Szymon Krofey (1586), Michał Pontanus (1643), and Perykopy smołdzińskie (1699–1701). The old translations were done from German in the Protestant circles in West Pomerania. In turn, the “contemporary trans[1]lations” of biblical texts into Kashubian embrace translations from the second half of the 20th century, which were produced in the Catholic environment of Gdańsk Pomerania: from Latin (Mk 4:3-20) by Alojzy Nagel (1973), from Latin (four Gospels) by Rev. Franciszek Grucza (1992), from Polish (the New Testament and the Psalms) by Eugeniusz Gołąbek (1993–2007) and my own translations from Hebrew and Greek (the Four Gospels, the Pentateuch, Ecclesiastes) prepared in 2001–2020.

Between the year 1925 and the outbreak of World War II, the Diocese of Częstochowa had 473 priests. Apart from their pastoral duties, some priests engaged in writing. They were educated for that purpose, and some of them had had previous authorship experiences in other Dioceses. The most prolific were priests coming from the Diocese of Włocławek. Essays and papers by the Częstochowa Diocese priests were published by university and Diocese publishing houses. Clerical publishing was strongly supported by the Diocese leaders, such as Bishop Teodor Kubina, who emphasized the importance of these activities. The publications in question concerned a variety of issues and domains. Most works concerned theology. Some of these were strictly scientific papers, others were of more popular character, yet others were targeted at a wider public. The publications were in Polish and Latin. Apart from theology, some priests wrote texts in the field of humanities: literature, documentaries and journalism. Altogether, in the years 1925-1939, at least 57 priests were active writers, which equalled 12% of the total of the clergy in the Diocese.

The article deals with the problems of translation and interpretation of certain places in the biblical text. As a pretext for the considerations undertaken, the author used Tadeusz Szymański’s sketch published in the “Język Polski” magazine in the final years of the last century, in which the Cracovian Slavist proves that the translation of the pericope “about the camel and the eye of a needle”, found in all the synoptic gospels (Mt 19:24; Mk 10:25; Lk 18:25), is erroneous in the Polish translation‑biblical tradition. According to the author of the study, Tadeusz Szymanski’s sketch reveals both some misunderstandings and gives rise to the need for more integrated, philological and biblical research in the field of translation and biblical exegesis.

Te Holy Scriptures Lectures at the St. John Paul II Major Seminary of the Dio-cese of Siedlce from 1918 to 2018 Tis article was intended to show how the St. John Paul II Major Seminary of the Diocese of Siedlce over the last hundred years fulflled the basic requirement of formation for the priesthood, which is the intellectual introduction of alumni into the knowledge of the Holy Scriptures. In the 20th century, the Church in Poland experienced many dif-fculties connected above all with the First and Second World Wars and the communist regime. Nevertheless, the seminary of the Diocese of Siedlce, thanks to the continuous reading of the current Magisterium’s guidelines and the involvement of more and more educated lecturers, constituted an environment for preparing alumni for the demanding and responsible ministry of the Word.

The article is focused on Theological Philosophy constructed by Peter van Inwagen and modern Fundamental Theology which has been cultivated at KUL. Both disciplines try to present reasonable justification for Christian fundamental convictions. P. van Inwagen − specially in his book God, Knowledge, and Mystery: Essays in Philosophical Theology − knowing well modern philosophy and the mentality of people living today tries to legitimate the main Christian beliefs. He writes about how Christians can justify the existence of personal God, he legitimates the authority of the Bible (which is questionable according to some scientific theories) and he defends the specific position of the Christian Church among other religions. In conclusion he suggests that Christian beliefs are not certain for non-Christians but it does not mean that they are not reasonable and acceptable. Fundamental Theology cultivated at KUL is very similiar to P. van Inwagen's project in some points. But in some other aspects his position should be deepened.

A literary and biblistic monograph entitled Hermeneutica Sacra written by Zorâna Lanovik, an Ukrainian professsor of literature at the University of Ternopil, is a very good example of a sacrological scholarly study. Professor Lanovik deals with Russian and Ukrainian literature, theory of literature, comparative studies and the Bible. She has created her own concept of sacrology and sacrological hermeneutics, especially in the sphere of biblical motifs in literature. This extensive monograph (586 pages), written in Ukrainian, is a very important work concerned with the theme of the sacrology of literature and hermeneutics of biblical literature. The monograph consists of an introduction (pages 6-13) and three main chapters, divided into many small parts (subsections). In the first chapter entitled The Bible and literature: specificity of artistic nature of the biblical texts as the basis of biblical hermeneutics (p. 14-57) the author deals with the following questions: 1) the Bible and artistic literature in the context of textual interpretation (p.14-19), 2) the history of the world (Weltgeschichte) and the holy history (Heilsgeschichte) in relation to the problems of historicism and mythologicism (mythology in scholarly cognition) in the Bible (p.19-37), 3) lingual concepts in the Bible (p. 38-43), 4) poetics and rhetoric (artistic nature of the biblical texts, (p. 43-50)), polysemantics and dialogic multiplicity of the Bible (p.50-57) The second chapter entitled Genesis of the biblical hermeneutics: an aspect of literary studies (p.58-280) presents the following issues concerning the history of biblical hermeneutics (‘historiography’ of the theory of the interpretation of the Bible): 1) intertextuality and allegorism as dominants of the ancient Jewish hermeneutics of sacred texts (p.58-74), 2) principles of literary interpretation of The Old Testament in the early apologetics (p.75-79), 3) development of allegorical and historical and literary method of interpretation of the Bible in patristic exegetics (p.79-93), the conception of textual interpretation in scholasticism in the Middle Ages (p.93-107), 5) philological change in the period of humanism and renaissance hermeneutics (p.108-111), 6) transformation of biblical hermeneutics in the Reformation era (p.112-128), 7) inductive basis of ancient texts in scholarly paradigm of modernism (p.128-153), including such problems as: a) biblical rationalism (p.128-130), b) historical and literary criticism (p. 131-140), c) grammar interpretation (p.140-144), d) philosophy and cultural studies (p.145-150), d) biblical irrationalism (p.150-153) and, moreover, 8) interpretive model of the latest biblical hermeneutics (p.154-270), including issues such as: a) the liberal school of hermeneutics (p.154-180), b) the mythological school of hermeneutics (p.180-184), c) the biblical existentialism (p.184-193), d) the most recent phenomenological hermeneutics (p.194-218), e) extra-hermeneutical model of analysis of biblical texts (p.218-234), f) return to the assumptions of "pure hermeneutics" (p.235-270), 9) non-secular schools of Biblical Studies (p.270-280). In the third chapter entitled Methodological system of analysis of biblical texts (p.281-541), the author presents the following questions: 1) the basis of ‘extra-textual’ context of the Bible as an interpretative paradigm of the historical and critical method in hermeneutics (p.281-331), including issues such as: a) the historical paradigm (p.283-305), b) paradigm of cultural studies (p.305-321), c) the geographical paradigm (p.321-331), moreover, 2) the generic paradigm and critical-literary method of interpretation (p.332-387), including issues such as: a) the specificity of the epic (prose) and types (species) of prose in the Old Testament (p.335 -342), b) ancient Jewish poetry and wisdom literature (p.342-358), c) the stories of the prophets: creating genological factors and artistic-figurative curiosities (p.358-371), d) Gospel as the basis of generic description of the New Testament (p.371-381), e) literary analysis of the letters of the New Testament (p.381-387), f) the generic nature of apocalyptic literature: the specificity of artistic organization of the text (p.388-396); besides 3) the author’s paradigm and psychological method of interpretation (p.396-417), 4) the paradigm of language and grammatical method of interpretation (p.417-439), 5) contextual and intertextual principles of the hermeneutical analysis (p.439-465), 6) metatextual paradigms of the Bible and principles of their interpretation (p.465-541), including such problems as: a) the archetypal paradigm (p.465-481), b) the symbolical paradigm (p.481-505), c) the allegorical paradigm (p.505-519), d) the typological paradigm (p.519-541). The author presents the conclusions of the analysis separately (p.542-562), and includes an extensive bibliography (i.e. the literature of the subject - p.563-586). In my opinion, it would be useful to translate this book into English to make it possible for scholars from other European countries to become familar with the conceptions of the Ukrainian sacrological school.

Biblical glossary as a research problemThe Biblical glossary is one of the most important phenomena in the history of medieval scholarship, it combines the text of the Scriptures with a commentary in a special graphic layout. It played an important part in the popularisation of the Biblical studies. The glossary appeared around the turn of the twelve century in northern France in the milieu of cathedral school at Laon, with the key figure of Master Anselm. Already before the mid-twelve century glosses to individual books of the Bible gained huge popularity, and had hundreds of copies. At a certain time – it is thought today that it was the early thirteenth century – the text of the Glossary got stabilised. And although in the thirteenth century its popularity began to fade, it was copied to the end of the medieval period, and then many times published in print.Modern research into the glossary, although initiated in the nineteenth century, has in fact been developed in the 1980s. But ambitious source research and comparative analyses have shown that the Biblical glossary is a very difficult discipline. It was comparatively easy for researchers to have got through hagiographical legends that grew up around the glossary (for example the alleged authorship of Walafrid Strabon), but despite all the efforts only one book (Song of Songs) and some other fragments were published in a critical edition. In the course of ongoing studies more and more apparently “sure” points in our knowledge about the glossary are discredited, such as, for instance, the conviction that the glossary text had stabilised at one point of time. What hampers the research is mainly an enormous number of manuscript copies containing glosses, amounting to thousands of them. What is more, the production of those manuscripts was strictly standardised, making it difficult to establish not only their actual chronology, but also their place of origin. The research into the Biblical glossary is still a growing field of study.

Particular books were matched with their owners and thus catalogues of private libraries came into existence. In some cases these “catalogues” contain only one or two printed books. The private libraries stored in the chapter library contain monuments of printing since the fifteenth century. The priests who owned these books were either members of the chapter house or curates of the Kielce collegiate church in the period from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. The members of the chapter house as well as the curates owned printed books connected with their sacerdotal activity, such as collections of sermons, handbooks for priests or liturgical books. Some of them owned also works of the Fathers of the Church as well as biblical, theological and legal prints. The contents of the private book collections cast light on the interests and the theological culture of the environment of the Kielce chapter.

Opis:
Niniejszy artykuł jest przyczynkiem do interpretacji dwóch metaforycznych wypowiedzi Jezusa z Kazania na Górze, za pomocą których określa On tożsamość swoich uczniów: „sól ziemi” i „światłość świata” (Mt 5,13-14). Na podstawie analizy tekstów starotestamentalnych, ukazuje on obecne w nich różnorakie znaczenia motywu soli. Wyniki naszej pracy, uzupełnione o badanie innych pism judaizmu I w. (np. starotestamentalne apokryfy, pisma żydowskich pisarzy pozabiblijnych, pisma wspólnoty z Qumran, najstarsze tradycje rabiniczne zawarte w Talmudzie, inne pisma Nowego Testamentu i nowotestamentalne apokryfy), mogą przyczynić się do właściwej interpretacji słów Jezusa, który nazywając swoich uczniów „solą ziemi”, wyraźnie zamierzał podkreślić rolę, jaką mają oni do spełnienia wobec świata.
This article is a contribution to interpretation of two metaphorical statements of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount, with which he defines the identity of his disciples: "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world" (Mt 5:13-14). Based on the analysis of Old Testament texts, it shows the various meanings of the salt motif present in them. The results of our work, accompanied by an analysis of other writings of 1st century Judaism (e.g., the Old Testament Apocrypha, writings of Jewish extra-biblical writers, the writings of the Qumran community, the oldest rabbinic traditions in the Talmud, other New Testament writings and the New Testament Apocrypha), may contribute to accurate interpretation of the words of Jesus, who describing his disciples as "the salt of the earth", clearly intended to emphasize the role they have to fulfil in the world.
