The regional varietz of German als a cultural phenomenon with examples of the Austrian GermanUntil recently the German language of Germany was the main language taught as a foreign language. Other varieties as e.g. the Austrian German were devaluated as regional or as a dialect. in this essay the author wants to underline that there is a tendency (as well in the European language politics as well as in the linguistic sciences) that the pluricentricity is accepted as a cultural phenomenon. But this fact should have consequences in the field of translation (studies), in the field of research of languages for specific purposes and also in teaching foreign languages.

Der Band enthält die Abstracts ausschließlich in englischer Sprache.
For some years now scientists have been dealing with multi- and intercultural phenomena. After presenting definitions of interculturalism and the integration policy in Germany for foreigners in the 70s, the author states that nowadays teachers start to understand the problem of migration and therefore multicultural and -lingual classrooms better. Many teachers try to take advantage of an additional culture/ language as a certain value. How to start dealing with those subjects and to motivate students to think these topics over is shown on the example of two films, a German one (Italian immigrants and their life for twenty years in Germany) and an Austrian film from the early 90s (an Iranian guy, former German teacher in his home country, comes to Vienna, taking his teenaged son and sister with him and tries hard to start a new life in Vienna. It is stated that a teacher can work with a film as a medium to reach his goal of discussing the current global topic foreign cultures.

The author's diagnosis of the modern German language has found that it is full of English terms and phrases, especially in the mass media, where many of them are already intruding into the everyday language. Some language researchers fear the worst - but is this fear really justified? The author of this article explains the old tendency of traditionalists to keep the language „clean" and not to accept words which are borrowed from other fashionable" languages. Because of globalization and modern technology there are more English words coming into the German language. Another reason is that the youth find English more fashionable and attractive. The process of borrowing a word from another language is usually a slow process and many words are not kept and disappear later. Those that are practical and useful are kept and this is shown in the case with Anglicism. Although it is sometimes difficult to put the English word into the German Grammar structure, the average German is able to incorporate them into their language. This importing and exporting of words (but why only from English?) is only an example of an evolving language that changes every day.

Religion as a part of culture has similarities to language: it is characteristic for nearly every individual. As there are processes of interculturality (contact of different cultures) there are also processes of inter-religiosity. On the examples of John Paul II. and Benedict XVI. the author explains the development and the theological background of the growing dialogue between religions. Although the differences are often a base for conflicts, there are many (worldwide) interreligious movements that are exemplary and therefore worth discussing.

Pictures/caricatures – as a part of culture are characteristic for a society (nation). In the process where different cultures get in touch pictures may play a role in teaching a foreign language. Introduction into an intercultural topic, intensive discussion – there are many possibilities for a teacher to show his/her students the life in a German-speaking country in its various facets. Caricatures can combine politics, society, religion, culture and sense of humour with an enrichment of the language used in classroom – at the same time supporting the development of the intercultural competence of the students.

Das Buch „Migrationslinguistik. Eine Einführung“ von Nikolas Koch und Claudia Maria Riehl bietet eine umfassende Auseinandersetzung mit sprachlichen Phänomenen im Kontext von Migration, insbesondere in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und Europa. Die Autoren betonen den kulturellen und sprachlichen Reichtum, den Migranten in ihre Aufnahmeländer bringen, und illustrieren dies mit Fallbeispielen wie dem eines iranischen Mädchens, das mehrere Sprachen beherrscht. In the discussion about the pluricentric languages the term of a “standard language” sometimes appears. Lately we also differentiate between the written and the oral standard language. On the given examples I will show that the term “standard” is often misinterpreted, e.g. in the Duden, where Austrian terms are reported, but not German terms. That is why the term, in respect of dictionaries, should be thought over and certain conclusions should be drawn. Even Austrians, when they want to express themselves nobly and elegantly, often use German terms because they are not conscious that their Austrian terms are also correct (they know too little about pluricentric languages) and because of the fact that Germany is very dominant they suffer from a linguistic inferiority complex.

In the development of languages (including varieties) nationalities or countries play an important role. That is how pluricentric languages have developed. In the field of German as a pluricentric language many articles have already been published in scientific magazines. In spite of that the pluricentricity of languages is hardly acknowledged – the effects can be seen in dictionaries, in programs of teaching at universities (literature, linguistics as well as translation studies), but above all in text books for students, where elements of pluricentricity are usually absent. That is why some desiderata for the future teaching German as a Foreign Language ought to be expressed.
