Opis:
Although the number of publications on gully erosion has increased over the last decade, there are still various aspects of gully erosion that deserve more research efforts. Some of these, discussed in this contribution, are gully erosion in historical times, measuring techniques, processes of gully initiation, development and infilling, the interaction between gully erosion with hydrological and other soil degradation processes (e.g. piping, landsliding, tillage erosion and erosion induced by land levelling), gully erosion models, effective and efficient gully prevention and control measures. A better understanding of these aspects would allow one to better predict the impact of environmental change, gully prevention and control measures on gully erosion and gully infilling rates at a range of temporal and spatial scales and for various types of environments, and the effects of gully erosion on sediment yield, hydrological process intensities and landscape evolution.

Opis:
This study investigates how medium-term gully-development data differ from short-term data, and which factors are responsible for their spatial and temporal variability. Eight actively retreating bank gullies situated in Spanish basin landscapes were monitored for up to 11 years with high-resolution aerial photographs using unmanned remote-controlled platforms. The results of planimetric and volumetric change analysis using GIS and photogrammetry systems show a high variability of annual gully retreat rates both between gullies and between observation periods. The varying influences of land use and human activities with their positive or negative effects on runoff production and connectivity appears to play the most important role in these study areas, both for short-term variability and medium-term difference in gully development. The study demonstrates the importance of capturing spatially continuous, high-resolution three-dimensional data for detailed gully monitoring. It also confirms that short-term data are not representative of longer-term gully development, but they are still required to understand the processes - particularly human activity at varying time scales - causing gully-erosion variability.

Opis:
The pinhole test is an empirical test based on the qualitative evaluation of the dispersivity (colloidal erodibility) of compacted fined-grained soils. This study evaluates the pinhole test device for the quantitative assessment of the susceptibility of soil horizons to piping. The experiments performed on different loess-derived soil horizons, with different hydraulic head and using distilled water show that the clay-enriched horizon (Bt horizon) is less susceptible to piping than the decalcified (C1) and the calcareous horizon (C2). This study demonstrates that the pinhole test is suitable for assessing the susceptibility of soil horizons to piping in a quantitative way.

Opis:
Field observations and literature reveal that land use and soil characteristics play an important role in the development of piping. In this study, the hypothesis is tested that discontinuities in the soil profile favour piping erosion in loess-derived soils in a temperate humid climate. Abiotic characteristics (clay content, bulk density, Ksat, penetration resistance) and the biological activity in the soil were measured for each soil horizon until a depth of at least 40 cm below the pipes (ca. 1.30 m) for 12 representative soil profiles with different land use (pasture with and without collapsed pipes, arable land and forest). No clear discontinuities in abiotic characteristics were observed at soil depths where subsurface pipes occurred, but pastures with piping had significantly more earthworm channels and mole burrows at larger depths than pastures without piping, arable land or forest.

Opis:
This study investigates area-specific Sediment Yield (SY) in Mediterranean badland areas at different spatial scales using a SY-database compiled from scientific literature. Relationships between the plot and catchment characteristics and the corresponding SY-data are analyzed. Results indicate that in Mediterranean environments SY is larger than in other environments, especially in badlands where a high variability of SY is observed depending on the spatial scale. In intensively gullied badlands,a complex plot or drainage area (A) -SY relationship is observed: for A ranging between 10-5 and 10 ha,SY is very high (mean SY equals 475 t ha-1 yr-1),whereas for A greater than 10 ha,SY decreases with increasing A (mean SY less than 100 t ha-1 yr-1).

This study investigates the effects of land use changes between 1956 and 2006 on runoff and soil erosion in two Mediterranean catchments (South Spain)with active gullies, by applying the RMMF Model and by comparing the erosion channel network from both years. Results underline the complexity of soil erosion dynamics in gullied catchments where a general increase in soil erosion due to land use changes can occur simultaneously with a decrease in erosion rates within the gully system.

Opis:
Repeat photography offers a valuable tool for assessing gully erosion development over the past 140 years in North Ethiopia. From a dataset of 57 repeated historical photographs that display gully cross-sections, this study demonstrates that a gully incision phase took place in the second half of the 20th century. At present, thanks to the successful implementation of soil and water conservation measures, most gullies are stabilizing.
