Autor przekonuje, że inteligencja, która dominuje w sferze symbolicznej tego regionu, produkuje „ideologie wschodniości” – dyskursy petryfikujące polityczną i kulturową zależność regionu od Europy Zachodniej. Do analizy dyskursu wytwarzającego zniekształcony obraz Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej Zarycki wykorzystuje kategorie Orientu i orientalizmu Edwarda W. Saida. Niniejszy esej jest próbą dyskusji z tezą o trwającej do dziś kulturowej dominacji inteligencji w Polsce oraz problematyzacją ograniczeń proponowanej przez Zaryckiego krytycznej pespektywy.
The aim of the article is to present Tomasz Zarycki’s book “Ideologies of Eastness in Central and Eastern Europe” and to discuss selected arguments made in the book concerning Eastern European intelligentsia’s approach to the ideas of East and West. The author argues that intelligentsia, which dominates in the region’s symbolic sphere, produces the “ideologies of Eastness” – discourses that preserve the political and cultural dependence of the region on Western Europe. Zarycki applies Edward W. Said’s categories of Orient and orientalism to an analysis of discourse which produces a distorted image of Central and Eastern Europe. The present essay is an attempt to challenge and discuss the thesis that intelligentsia still dominates in Polish culture and to point out problems with the limitations of Zarycki’s critical perspective.

Celem artykułu jest krytyczna refleksja nad pojęciem dyspozytywu u Michela Foucaulta i jego aplikacją do badań społecznych. Dyspozytyw oznacza heterogeniczną kompozycję dyskursywnych i niedyskursywnych elementów rzeczywistości społecznej połączonych dynamicznymi relacjami władzy. Od dwóch dekad w ramach postfoucaultowskiej analizy dyskursu podejmowane są próby operacjonalizacji kategorii dyspozytywu. Jako kategoria analityczna dyspozytyw odnosi się do mechanizmów społecznie rozproszonej władzy, które można badać empirycznie na podstawie danych dyskursywnych i niedyskursywnych. Rezultatem zainteresowania dyspozytywem jest perspektywa badawcza analizy dyspozytywu. W artykule prezentowane są główne założenia tej perspektywy i typologia zastosowań Foucaultowskiej kategorii dyspozytywu w badaniach empirycznych, zilustrowana przykładami prac niemieckich i polskich badaczy. Prezentacji towarzyszy namysł nad niekonsekwencjami i ograniczeniami tego podejścia metodologicznego.
The aim of this paper is a critical reflection on Michel Foucault’s concept of dispositive and its application in social research. Dispositive means a heterogenic composition of discursive and non-discursive elements of social reality linked together with the dynamic relations of power. Since two decades in the frames of post-Foucauldian discourse analysis the attempts at operationalizing the category of dispositive have been made. As an analytical category dispositive refers to the mechanisms of socially dispersed power, which can be studied empirically on the basis of discursive and non-discursive data. A research perspective of dispositive analysis has emerged as a result of an interest in dispositive. This paper presents the main guidelines of this perspective, as well as a typology of applications of the Foucauldian category of dispositive in empirical research, illustrated with chosen examples of German and Polish scholars’ works. This presentation is accompanied by a consideration of inconsistencies and deficiencies of such methodological approach.

Artykuł dotyczy medialnych i spolaryzowanych debat publicznych, których przedmiotem staje się polskość i model osobowy Polaka-patrioty, a kontekstem jest obrachunek z polsko-żydowską przeszłością. Problematyka ta zostanie przybliżona na przykładzie sporu o film Pokłosie w reż. Władysława Pasikowskiego z 2012 roku. Celem badania jest rekonstrukcja dynamiki medialnej debaty oraz strategii dyskursu publicznego, które regulują, intensyfikują lub wygaszają spór o tzw. „trudną” przeszłość. Postawiono pytanie o kondycję współczesnych debat medialnych i o ich produktywny wymiar, a także o symptomatyczność stosowanych w debacie odniesień do kategorii polskości wobec napięć i podziałów w polskim społeczeństwie. Podstawą prezentowanych wniosków jest analiza dyskursu przeprowadzona na podstawie 54 artykułów z prasy ogólnoinformacyjnej.
The paper discusses polarised public debates in the media that deal with the category of Polishness and with the role model of a Pole and a patriot in the context of the reckoning with the Polish-Jewish past. This problem is illustrated by the case of a debate on Władysław Pasikowski’s film Aftermath in 2012. The aim of the study is to reconstruct the dynamics of a media debate and the strategies in public discourse that regulate, intensify or suppress a dispute over the so called difficult past. The study questions the condition of contemporary media debates and their productivity and it discusses symptomaticity of the references in the debate to the category of Polishness towards the tensions and divisions in Polish society. The present argumentation is based on the discourse analysis carried out on the corpus of 54 articles from the Polish press.

Teoria postkolonialna, inaczej postkolonializm, jest poststrukturalnym nurtem krytycznym prężnie rozwijanym od lat 80. XX w. W ostatniej dekadzie można jednak zauważyć narastające wątpliwości wokół repertuaru zastosowań tej perspektywy, koncentrującej się na relacji kolonizator – skolonizowany. Niniejszy artykuł rekonstruuje etapy rozwoju teorii postkolonialnej oraz takich wymiarów tego nurtu, które można ogólnie określić mianem kobiecych (genderowych). Szczególny nacisk jest położony na konfrontację postkolonialnego postulatu odzyskiwania narodowo-kulturowej podmiotowości i perspektywy feministycznej. Instytucjonalizacja teorii postkolonialnej i pojawienie się grupy znaczących badaczek, pochodzących głównie z byłych kolonii, przyczyniło się do powstania socjologiczno-etnograficznej odmiany postkolonializmu o charakterze interwencyjnym. Przedmiotem analiz postkolonialnych stają się praktyki, w których wyraża się kobiecość konstruowana w społeczeństwach doświadczających politycznej i kulturowej dominacji. Na przełomie XX i XXI wieku pojawiły się oparte o instrumentarium pojęciowe postkolonializmu analizy świata postsowieckiego. We wschodnioeuropejskim wariancie teorii postkolonialnej kluczową pozycję zajmuje wizja zniewolonego narodu jako kobiety, m.in. w analizach M. Janion, E. Thompson (Polska) i N. Shevchuk-Murray, T. Hundorovej (Ukraina). Mimo nadziei wiązanych z adaptacją postkolonializmu do badań Europy Wschodniej to podejście, podobnie jak klasyczna teoria postkolonialna, spotyka się z silną krytyką. Czy feminizacja tego nurtu rozsadza go od środka?
Postcolonial theory, or postcolonialism, is a poststructural critical approach dynamically developing since 1980. In the recent decade one can observe increasing doubts about this focused on colonizer – colonized relation perspective. This article reconstructs the stages of the rise of postcolonial theory and such dimensions of this approach which concern gender matters. The stress is put specially on the confrontation between postcolonial claim of regaining national-cultural subjectivity and feminist perspective. The institutionalization of postcolonial theory and apparition of a group of significant female researchers, majority of whom comes from ex-colonies, contributed to emergence of a sociological-ethnographical variant of postcolonialism: an interventionist one. The practices in which the constructed in politically and culturally dominated societies womanhood express itself are becoming an object of postcolonial analysis. At the turn of the XX and XXI centuries the analysis of postsoviet world based on the postcolonial categories emerged. In the Eastern European variant of postcolonial theory the key position is taken by the vision of a enslaved nation as a woman, inter alia in the analysis by M. Janion, E. Thompson (Poland) and N. Shevchuk-Murray, T. Hundorova (Ukraine). Despite the hopes interlinked to the adaptation of postcolonialism to studies of Eastern Europe, this approach, similarly to classic postcolonial theory, is strongly criticized. Is the feminization of this perspective about to disrupt it from inside?

Michel Foucault introduced the notion of dispositif of sexuality in The Will to Knowledge (1976). Soon afterwards he took part in a discussion organized by a French magazine 'Ornicar?' during which he was asked to explain synthetically his concept of dispositif. Over the next decades this short, and rather forced utterance was translated into German and English. These translations differ from each other not only with regard to their solutions how to substitute a French term dispositif with another word - accordingly German or English - but also because of a variety of details that are meaningful for the profiles of dispositif analysis and based on Foucault's thought postulated in research. This theoretical and methodological perspective has being developed since Foucault's death in 1984, especially since the 1990's. One can indicate numerous and significant differences between the German- and English-language dispositif analysis, as well as between both of them and the Foucault's original concept. There is a need to question if the researchers who identify dispositif with a social network or with a material infrastructure of discourse (inter alia communication technology and social practices mediated through this technology) still follow Foucault's concept of power-knowledge to which they refer so willingly? This problem seems to be notably important at present - when more and more researchers in Poland show their interest in dispositif's concept. Therefore, a demand to translate its key terms into Polish emerges. In this article the dilemmas of Polish and other translations are presented on samples of several Foucault's utterance in 'Ornicar?' translations and fragments of contemporary texts from the field of German- and English-language dispositif's analysis.

Social sciences are interested in ethnic entrepreneurship as a chance for migrants to (better) integrate into the host labour market, and in consequence into a host society. Th e multidimensional models capture a wide range of factors at the bottom of the economic behaviour of migrant entrepreneurs, and they increasingly consider that migrants might profit in business from sustaing their social ties with the country of their origin. Looking at Polish migrant entrepreneurs in eastern German regions bordering to Poland we plead for a relational perspective which considers migrants’ business activities in relation to the patterns of trans-border residential mobility and complex social and economic transformations in Polish and German border regions.

Wprowadzenie do tomu Perspektywa Foucaultowska we współczesnej refleksji badawczej składa się z dwóch części. Celem pierwszej z nich jest zwięzłe zaprezentowanie głównych kierunków współczesnych inspiracji bogatym dorobkiem Michela Foucaulta, do których należą między innymi studia nad biopolityką, rządomyślnością/urządzaniem (governmentality), krytyczne analizy neoliberalizmu, analiza dyspozytywu oraz refleksja nad kategoriami krytyki i parezji. W drugiej części charakteryzowany jest tematyczny zakres tomu, który odzwierciedla wieloaspektowość i wielowątkowość postfoucaultowskiej refleksji badawczej.
The introduction to the volume Foucauldian Perspective in Contemporary Research consists of two parts. The aim of the first part is a brief presentation of the main directions in contemporary studies inspired by Michel Foucault’s legacy to which belong, for example, studies in biopolitics, governmentality studies, critical analysis of neoliberalism, dispositive analysis, and reflection on the categories of critique and parrhesia. The second part characterizes the thematic field of the volume, which reflects the multidimensionality and complexity of post-Foucauldian research.

Postfoucauldian discourse analysis is a vigorously developing approach to discourse studies focusing on the analysis of power, discourse, knowledge and social practice. This comprises studies deriving from Michel Foucault’s thought, reinterpreting it, however, with the aim at application to an analysis of empirical data, also from the field of pedagogy and education. The purpose of this paper is to present main concepts and categories of postfoucauldian discourse analysis (e.g. enunciation, discursive formation, discursive practice, procedures for the control of discourse, dispositive, regime of truth) and guidelines for conducting research on the example of an analysis of chosen public texts concerning the debate on liquidation of middle schools in Poland as a result of the reform of education carried out by Law and Justice’ government.

Post-Foucauldian discourse and dispositif analysis, a methodological approach inspired by the work of Michel Foucault and developed in Western Europe, over the last decade has gained an increasing amount of attention from Eastern European researchers. Yet, this interest has not been accompanied by sufficient reflection on the post-Foucauldian perspective’s adequacy for studying power, governance, and subjectification in post-socialist societies. In particular, there is little criticism that would take into account the current discussion on Foucault’s ambivalent attitude towards neoliberalism. The goal of this article is to examine this line of criticism of Foucault’s late works and to point to its importance for dispositif analysis carried out in Eastern and Central European societies (e.g., Poland) in comparison to analyses carried out in Western Europe (e.g., Germany). I propose a number of methodological recommendations that aim at adapting post-Foucauldian research instruments to facilitate analyzing power relations in the post-socialist context; these include: an interdisciplinary combination of discourse analysis and an analysis of macroeconomic and macrosocial factors; an analysis of the practices of normalization in post-socialist societies with reference to the Center-Periphery relationship; introducing elements of semiology, anthropology of the contemporary and cultural identity analysis to dispositif analysis.

The article regards the public debate focusing on the assessment of the political transformation andthe model of modernisation implemented in Poland after 1989. In recent years, the conservative and right-wingcriticism, which focused on pro-Western modernisation and the liberal discourse of transformational success,is more and more often accompanied with self-criticising statements uttered by the former liberal leaders ofthe democratic transformation and with appeals for a radical retribution of the past which are put forward bythe young generation of Polish intellectuals. On the basis of the analysis of the public discourse between 2013and 2017, the author differentiates between the retribution and reckoning dimensions of the liberal and leftistdiscourse, reconstructing its interpretative and argumentative structures. The discourse of ‘being disappointedwith the transformation’ is considered a symptom of the condition of public debate in Poland.
