Opis:
Following the requirements of ISO 10140, to determine the acoustic insulation, measurements of the sound pressure levels in the source (L1) and receiving (L2) rooms and the reverberation time measurements in the receiving room (T) should be performed. However, the standard does not indicate the measuring signal to be used for the measurements. Various measurement methods can be used, including the use of the broadband noise or MLS method. The article examines the influence of the applied measurement methodology on the determined spectra of acoustic insulation and the weighted sound reduction index Rw. The total uncertainty of determining the acoustic insulation properties and partial uncertainties in determining L1, L2 and T were also calculated. The analysis of the obtained results allows concluding that the applied measurement method has no significant impact on the obtained acoustic insulation values, and the obtained measurement differences may rather be the result of an insufficient sample size.

Opis:
The main problem in the measurement of airborne sound insulation is the measurement of the sound power radiated by the barrier, in practice performed by measuring the sound pressure level and the acoustic absorption in the receiving room. Large variations of the sound pressure level in a reverberation room indicate the presence of dominating strong standing waves, so that it becomes necessary to install diffusing elements. In ISO 10140, the limits have been defined in which the reverberation time at frequencies at and above 100 Hz should be included. Sometimes, however, in the case of rooms with a large volume, obtaining the required parameters is difficult and sometimes even impossible. It should then be checked whether the measured sound insulation depends on the reverberation time. The paper presents the results of sound insulation measurements at various reverberation time lengths in subsequent stages of diffusing elements installation in the receiving room. An analysis of diffusing materials amount and arrangement influence on the uniformity of the sound pressure level distribution and reverberation time in the room as well as the value of the measured sound insulation was carried out. Uncertainty of sound insulation measurement with partial uncertainties was adopted as a criterion supporting the assessment of the obtained results.

Opis:
The research concerning the future of sound in towns and cities is focused on two main issues: studies are conducted separately on the comfort, i.e., assessment of visual scenery and sound levels in a cityscape and separately, on the health protection issues. The policy of the acoustic environment control with regard to the health of its inhabitants is traditionally connected with measurements of noise levels presented with the help of the coefficients Lden and Lnight noise indicators, while the models based on tranquillity rating (TR) with the help of the coefficients LAmax, LAmin, LAeq, LA10. None of these coefficients refers to the soundscape. In this paper, we present a justification of the necessity to enter into discussion on the need to combine these research areas. The authorities managing towns and cities of the future should be provided with tools enabling them to assess modernisation projects from the point of view of both health and comfort of inhabitants. We present our ideas treating them as an invitation to a scientific discourse, in the form of analysis of actual projects concerning modification of existing cityscapes. The modifications are aimed at returning some unfavourably developed spaces to the inhabitants. When analysing the changes proposed in the projects, we take into account two models of the revitalised area quality assessment. The first model is used to assess the effect of noise on health. The second model, based on the indicator known as the TR, serves simultaneous assessment of an area from both visual and acoustical aspects. The models used contemporarily by scientists show multiple flaws, therefore, for the TR indicator we propose a modification taking the sound structure into account. The modification embodies the idea of masking unpleasant sounds with friendly ones. The changes to the model are presented, in this paper, in the context of two projects which were worked out in the framework of 12th edition of the intercollegiate workshop cycle The New Cityscapes. In the course of each workshop of the cycle, we combined art, science, and technology in order to seek solutions creating a better future. In view of the importance of this issue and the need to introduce a certain level of universalism, the authors offer an invitation to join a discussion on the future of sound in urban agglomerations.

Opis:
Far sometime residents of big cities have been encouraged to charge their means of transport, that is, to swap passenger cars for public transport vehicles. This is meant to help to reduce the problems associated with heavy traffic and air pollution. The authors of the article decided to check if such a change is also beneficial from the point of view of comfort and health of a person who uses public transport. For this purpose values of vibration acceleration and sound pressure level to which Cracow’s commuters are exposed to have been analyzed, depending on the type of vehicle they choose. In this respect measurements have been carried out for passenger cars, buses and trams. Two vehicle models of each type, significantly different from each other (old and new) have been selected for the tests. The measurements during a few trips in each type of vehicle on a predetermined route have been conducted. This arte presents a comparison of measured values of vibroacoustic parameters in the time domain. It attempts to assess vibration and noise parameters, taking in to account their impact on the health and comfort of the traveler.

Opis:
The specific working conditions of the wind turbine in strong wind cause a number of problems in the measurement of noise indicators used in its short and long-term assessment. The wind is a natural working environment of the turbine, but it also affects the measurement system, moreover, it can be a secondary source of other sounds that interfere with the measurement. One of the effective methods of eliminating the direct impact of wind on the measurement system is placing the microphone on the measurement board at ground level. However, the obtained result can not be directly compared with the admissible values, as it has to be converted to a result at a height of 4 m. The results of previous studies show that this relation depends, inter alia, on the speed and direction of the wind. The paper contains the results of measurements on the measurement board, according to EN 61400-11:2013, and at a height of 4 m above ground made simultaneously in three points around the 2 MW turbine at various instantaneous speeds and changing wind directions. Analysis of the impact of measuring point location on the measurement result of noise indicators and the occurrence of additional features affecting the relationship between the values measured on the board and at the height of 4 m, and especially the tonality, amplitude modulation and content of low frequency content, was made.

Opis:
The Tranquility Rating coefficient (TR) is a tool proposed for assessing the quality of urban green areas, which considers both visual and acoustic aspects. This paper aims to verify how the proposed TR coefficient works for the assessment of the audiovisual quality of a typical urban space in a vicinity of an arterial road. Three different versions of the same urban space are considered: loud and visually unappealing (current state), quiet and visually unappealing (after considerable traffic reduction), and visually appealing and quiet (after redesigning). The values of noise levels required for the calculation of TR are taken from the noise maps based on the in-situ measurements, and the values of the percentage ratio of the features which are natural or man-made but contained within the visual scene (NCF) are taken from a survey conducted in the research. The results show that for the urban areas, even with very low noise levels, the TR is described as “unacceptable”. This may indicate the need for introducing an amendment for TR to be used in typical urban areas.

Opis:
The article presents a comparative analysis of determined spectral responses of the airborne sound insulation of single homogeneous baffles using computational and experimental methods. Calculations using theoretical models, such as mass law, the Sharp and Davy models, SoundFlow software and laboratory tests concerned nine plates made of plastic, steel, aluminium and rubber, which are homogeneous materials. These materials are used in the construction of walls in vibroacoustic protection, such as acoustic barriers, machine operating field shields and sound insulating enclosures. Apart from analysing the spectral responses of the sound insulation of the plates, the weighted single-number sound reduction indices Rw, calculated by using prediction methods and laboratory measurements, were compared. Research has shown computational errors of about 6-7 dB for mass law and the Sharp model and about 3 dB for the Davy and Davy-Sharp models and SoundFlow software.

Opis:
This paper presents an overview of the indices used in evaluating ILFN noise, based on C and G weighting curves and LC-LA difference parameter, as well as curves compared to the loudness threshold curve. The research section includes measurement results of wind turbine (WT) noise along with proposed indicators for evaluating this noise in the infrasound and low-frequency bands at distances of 250 m, 500 m and 1000 m from the turbine. The results obtained indicate low noise levels in the infrasound band, lower than the threshold curves from a dozen or so dB in the upper part of this band to nearly 60 dB in the lower part. The LC-LA indicator has been shown to be of poor utility for evaluating low-frequency noise, with the LG indicator reasonably useful for evaluating infrasound noise.
