The void fraction is one of the most important parameters characterizing a multiphase flow. The prediction of the performance of any system operating with more than single phase relies on our knowledge and ability to measure the void fraction. In this work, a validated simulation study was performed in order to predict the void fraction independent of the flow pattern in gas-liquid two-phase flows using a gamma ray 60Co source and just one scintillation detector with the help of an artificial neural network (ANN) model of radial basis function (RBF). Three used inputs of ANN include a registered count under Compton continuum and counts under full energy peaks of 1173 and 1333 keV. The output is a void fraction percentage. Applying this methodology, the percentage of void fraction independent of the flow pattern of a gas-liquid two-phase flow was estimated with a mean relative error less than 1.17%. Although the error obtained in this study is almost close to those obtained in other similar works, only one detector was used, while in the previous studies at least two detectors were employed. Advantages of using fewer detectors are: cost reduction and system simplification.

The resistance of 8 tomato varieties to cotton white fly, Bemisia tabaci (Genn) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), was evaluated in four greenhouse experiments. In the first experiment, we evaluated the attractiveness and preference for oviposition in a free-choice test (randomized blocks, 8 treatments, and 5 replications). In the other experiments, we evaluated the no-choice preference for oviposition (randomized blocks, 4 treatments, and 4 replications). The whitefly egg-adult cycle was monitored using a statistical design in randomized blocks with four replications. The percentage mortality of immature stages was also determined (randomized blocks with four replications). In the free-choice test, the tomato variety Rio Grande was the most attractive to adults, while the variety Cheffalat had the lowest number of adults. Also in this assay, the variety CAL-JN3 presented the lowest number of eggs, while the variety Ergon presented the highest number of eggs. In the no-choice test, the varieties Chef-falat and CAL-JN3 remained resistant. Consequently, for these two varieties non-preference is the oviposition resistance mechanism. The egg-adult cycle varied from 26.02 days (Ergon) to 26.66 days (CAL-JN3). The total mortality varied from 20.52 (Ergon) to 33.97 (CAL-JN3). Considering all the characteristics, the variety CAL-JN3 was the most resistant to B. tabaci among all the tomato varieties studied, while variety Ergon was susceptible.

Stenting is one of the most important methods to treat atherosclerosis. Due to its simplicity and efficiency, the use of coronary stents in interventional procedures has rapidly increased, and different stent designs have been introduced in the market. In order to select the most appropriate stent design, it is necessary to analyze and compare the mechanical behavior of different types of stents. In this paper, the finite element method is used for analyzing the behavior of stents. The aim of this work is to investigate the expansion characteristics of a stent as it is deployed and implanted in an artery containing a plaque and propose a model as close to real conditions of stent implantation as possible. Furthermore, two commercially available stents (the Palmaz-Schatz and Multi-Link stents) are modeled and their behavior during the deployment is compared in terms of stress distribution, radial gain, outer diameter changes and dogboning. Moreover, the effect of stent design on the restenosis rate is investigated by comparing the stress distribution in the arteries. The results show the importance of considering the plaque in finite element simulation of mechanical behavior of the coronary stent. According to the findings, the possibility of restenosis is nonsignificantly lower for the Multi-Link stent in comparison with the Palmaz-Schatz stent, which is in good agreement with clinical results.
