Opis:
The work deals with the mechanical properties and biological behaviour of composite materials made of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) polymer and carbon fibers (CF) designed for laryngeal biomaterials. Two types of PEEK–based matrix composites containing carbon fibers in the form of cloth (2D) and short fibers (MD) were made. The composite samples were obtained via hot mol-ding of PEEK/CF prepregs. Mechanical durability of the composite samples aging in Ringer’s solution at 37oC was analyzed. The samples were dynami-cally loaded under bending force up to 106 cycles. The ultrasonic wave propagation method was applied to study changes in the composites. The mechanical changes were analyzed, taking into consideration the anisotropic structure of the composite samples. The layered composite samples were modified with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The changes in mechanical stability of the composite samples were not significant after fatigue testing up to 1·106cycles. The biological tests were carried out in the presence of hFOB-1.19-line human osteoblasts and HS-5-line human fibroblasts. The level of type I collagen produced from both types of cells was determined by ELISA test. The tests showed differen-ces between the samples with regard to the viability of the cells.

Opis:
In modern nanomaterial production, including those for medical purposes, carbon based materials are important, due to their inert nature and interesting properties. The essential attribute for biomaterials is their biocompatibility, which indicates way of interactions with host cells and body fluids. The aim of our work was to analyze two types of model carbon layers differing primarily in topography, and developing their interactions with blood plasma proteins. The first layer was formed of pyrolytic carbon C (CVD) and the second was constructed of multi-walled carbon nanotubes obtained by electrophoretic deposition (EPD), both set on a Ti support. The performed complex studies of carbon layers demonstrate significant dissimilarities regarding their interaction with chosen blood proteins, and points to the differences related to the origin of a protein: whether it is animal or human. However the basic examinations, such as: wettability test and nano sctatch tests were not sufficient to explain the material properties. In contrast, Raman microspectroscopy thoroughly decodes the phenomena occurring at the carbon structures in contact with the selected blood proteins. The 2D correlation method selects the most intense interaction and points out the different mechanism of interactions of proteins with the nanocarbon surfaces and differentiation due to the nature of the protein and its source: animal or human. The 2D correlation of the Raman spectra of the MWCNT layer+HSA interphase proves an increase in albumin β-conformation. The presented results explain the unique properties of the Clayers (CVD) in contact with human albumin.

Opis:
Nowadays, scientists may learn a lot about the organisms studied just by analyzing their genetic material. This requires the development of methods of reading genomes with high accuracy. It has become clear that the knowledge of the changes occuring within a viral genome is indispensable for effective fighting of the pathogen. A good example is SARS-CoV, which was a cause of death of many people and frightened the entire world with its fast and hard to prevent propagation. Rapid development of sequencing methods, like shotgun sequencing or sequencing by hybridization (SBH), gives scientists a good tool for reading genomes. However, since sequencing methods can read fragments of up to 1000 bp only, methods for sequence assembling are required in order to read whole genomes. In this paper a new assembling method, based on graph theoretical approach, is presented. The method was tested on SARS-CoV and the results were compared to the outcome of other widely known methods.
