A city is a cluster of buildings and areas of activity. The spaces between urban structures are often treated as a side effect, an accidental phenomenon present due to the location of buildings. However, in contrast to the buildings that have their functions established once they are erected, urban voids contain the potential for rapid change of use constituting an important element of both planned and unplanned activities. Empty spaces are possibilities for future arrangements and evolution of needs that are often unknown at the time of construction. The main objective of the article is to define the concept of ‘urban void’ and to analyze the hidden potential of it. The author emphasizes the need to create empty spaces as deliberately as architecture itself, including them in the urban tissue.

Opis:
Void initiation and growth serve as an important mechanism in ductile failures in metals. Particularly, on the micron-level, the extra hardening effect associated with strain gradient is accounted for by adopting strain gradient elasto-plasticity instead of the conventional plasticity. Effects of inertial, strain gradient hardening and thermal softening are formulated analytically for the case where a spherical void expands under external hydrostatic stress. As demonstrated by our results, the inertia effect firstly tends to hinder but then promotes the void growth. The threshold stress required for rapid void growth is lifted due to extra hardening of strain gradient so that the growth of a smaller void is delayed more remarkably. A considerable thermal softening phenomenon is observed here, which is caused by plastic work during the deformation process. The final void growth rate is mainly related to the maximum loading, which is consistent with the prediction based on the classical plastic theory.

Opis:
Single point incremental forming process is a most economical Die-less forming process. The major constraint of it is that it is a time consuming process. In this work, a new attempt was made in incremental forming process using Multipoint tool for SS430 sheets to increase the formability and to reduce forming time. Fractography analysis was made to study the size of voids that were formed during fracture. The forming limit diagrams were drawn and compared for single point incremental forming and the multipoint incremental forming of SS430 sheet. It was proved that the formability of SS430 sheet in the multipoint forming was better than the formability of that in single point forming and the time consumed was reduced. The strain distribution in both processes had also been studied along with surface roughness.

Technology advancements entail a necessity to remove huge amounts of heat produced by today’s electronic devices based on highly integrated circuits, major generators of heat. Heat transfer to boiling liquid flowing through narrow minichannels is a modern solution to the problem of heat transfer enhancement. The study was conducted for FC-72 boiling in a rectangular, vertical and asymmetrically heated minichannel that had depths of 0.5–1.5 mm, a width of 20 mm and a length of 360 mm. The heat flux increased and decreased within the range of 58.3–132.0 kWm-2, the absolute pressure ranged from 0.116 to 0.184 MPa and the mass flux was 185–1139.2 kgm-2s-1. The boiling process took place on a flat vertical heating surface made of Haynes-230 0.1 mm thick acid-proof rolled plate with the surface roughness of 121 μm.

With respect to Parmenides’ thought Melissus was regarded as a dissident thinker already in antiquity. His polemical introduction of the concept of void and the relative idea of infinite Being seemed particularly controversial. The aim of the present paper is to examine the origins of the Melissian understanding of void in order to trace its philosophical genesis to the criticism of the Atomist Leucippus. According to the philosopher from Abdera, the Eleatic fundamental principles had to conform to the obviousness of bodies’ motion, which is why the Eleatic not-Being had to be understood as void. Melissus took issue with this view and criticized the idea of the void’s reality by means of a methodical argument. In the course of doing so, the philosopher from Samos distorted the original Parmenidean ontology, which is why his theories were often criticized severely as theoretically weak.

This article is devoted to the issue of reflecting ideas, motifs, themes, types of protagonists and conflicts of the novel The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov in Pelevin’s novel Chapayev and Void. The central figure in Pelevin’s novel – Peter Emptiness (other versions of his name: Pyotr Pustota, Pyotr Voyd), reminds the reader of a hero from Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel – Ivan Homeless. The life situations of the respective heroes are analogous. The model of master and pupil is also an allusion to the relationship between Ivan and the Master. Pelevin’s reminiscence code also concerns the female hero Anna, who reflects Margarita as the ideal of beauty. Moreover, Pelevin seems to continue Bulgakov’s deliberations upon the evolution of Russian history, the constant and still valid conflict between the hero and Russian society. Additionally Pelevin uses the theme of spiritual initiation as the only way of escaping from the misery of Moscow’s reality

One of the non-intrusive and accurate methods of measuring void fraction in two-phase gas liquid pipe flows is the use of the gamma-transmission void fraction measurement technique. The goal of this study is to describe low-energy gamma-ray densitometry using an 241Am source for the determination of void fraction and flow regime in water/gas pipes. The MCNP code was utilized to simulate electron and photon transport through materials with various geometries. Then, a neural network was used to convert multi-beam gamma-ray spectra into a classification of the flow regime and void fraction. The simulations cover the full range of void fraction with Bubbly, Annular and Droplet flows. By using simulation data as input to the neural networks, the void fraction was determined with an error less than 3% regardless of the flow regime. It has thus been shown that multi-beam gamma-ray densitometers with a detector response examined by neural networks can analyze a two-phase flow with high accuracy.

In the first part of the paper the author focuses on the way the great historian and thinker Gershom Scholem understood the Lurianic idea of tsimtsum (i.e. divine contraction as the first act of creation) as the key category of Jewish theology. Next, he combines the conceptual structure emerging from the Scholemian understanding of tsimtsum with Jacques Derrida’s analysis of space. He suggests that the Platonic notion of khora as read by Derrida can be identified with the idea of tehiru, i.e. the void that comes into existence as a result of divine contraction. In the second part of the paper the author extends the equation even further by pointing out how the notion of khora-tehiru can be fruitfully combined with the idea of the “Freudian void,” the space created by the separation of the mother from the child in Freudian analysis of the emergence of the human subject. One of the benefits of such a conceptual merge is that the Scholemian/Derridean/Freudian space thus understood can be seen as permeated with a complex affective and libidinal dynamic. Drawing on various post-Freudian psychoanalytic theorists (Lacan, Klein, Winnicott, Green), the author proceeds to analyze this dynamic, focusing on the notions of mourning, anxiety and desire.

This paper is concerned with the critical void volume fraction fF representing the size of microdefects in a material at the time of failure. The parameter is one of the constants of the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) material model that need to be determined while modelling material failure processes. In this paper, an original experimental method is proposed to determine the values of fF. The material studied was S235JR steel. After tensile tests, the void volume fraction was measured at the fracture surface using an advanced technique of quantitative image analysis The material was subjected to high initial stress triaxialities T0 ranging from 0.556 to 1.345. The failure processes in S235JR steel were analysed taking into account the influence of the state of stress.

This paper present the results of experimental investigations of condensation of R134a refrigerant in pipe minichannels with internal diameters 0.64, 0.90, 1.40, 1.44, 1.92 and 3.30 mm subject to periodic pressure instabilities. It was established that as in conventional channels, the displacement velocity of the pressure instabilities distinctly depends on the frequency of their hydrodynamic generation. The void fraction distinctly influences the velocity of the pressure instabilities. The form of this relationship depends on the internal diameter of the minichannels and on the method of calculating the void fraction.

Przedstawiono metody wyznaczania współczynnika przejmowania ciepła przy wrzeniu w przepływie płynu chłodniczego w minikanale. Zastosowana technika termografli ciekłokrystalicznej pozwala określić wystąpienie inicjacji wrzenia. Zagadnienie rozwiązywane jest za pomocą funkcji Trefftza, którymi aproksymuje się nieznane temperatury. Ponadto funkcje Trefftza służą do tworzenia funkcji bazowych w metodzie elementów skończonych (MEST). Porównano wyniki otrzymane przy wykorzystaniu obu metod.
Results of research of three-phase air - water - oil flow in vertical pipes are presented in the paper. The limitations and possibilities of using two- and three-phase flow calculating methods available in literature to predicting void fractions in three-phase flow are described. The analysis and evaluation of accuracy of these models confirmed that the drift-flux model was the most advantageous. A new model-based method for void fractions calculations in three-phase upflow is presented.

The void fraction is one of the most important parameters characterizing a multiphase flow. The prediction of the performance of any system operating with more than single phase relies on our knowledge and ability to measure the void fraction. In this work, a validated simulation study was performed in order to predict the void fraction independent of the flow pattern in gas-liquid two-phase flows using a gamma ray 60Co source and just one scintillation detector with the help of an artificial neural network (ANN) model of radial basis function (RBF). Three used inputs of ANN include a registered count under Compton continuum and counts under full energy peaks of 1173 and 1333 keV. The output is a void fraction percentage. Applying this methodology, the percentage of void fraction independent of the flow pattern of a gas-liquid two-phase flow was estimated with a mean relative error less than 1.17%. Although the error obtained in this study is almost close to those obtained in other similar works, only one detector was used, while in the previous studies at least two detectors were employed. Advantages of using fewer detectors are: cost reduction and system simplification.

In the present study, we have developed a code using Matlab software for solving a rectangular aluminum plate having void, notch, at different boundary conditions discretizing a two dimensional (2D) heat conduction equation by the finite difference technique. We have solved a 2D mixed boundary heat conduction problem analytically using Fourier integrals (Deb Nath et al., 2006; 2007; 2007; Deb Nath and Ahmed, 2008; Deb Nath, 2008; Deb Nath and Afsar, 2009; Deb Nath and Ahmed, 2009; 2009; Deb Nath et al., 2010; Deb Nath, 2013) and the same problem is also solved using the present code developed by the finite difference technique (Ahmed et al., 2005; Deb Nath, 2002; Deb Nath et al., 2008; Ahmed and Deb Nath, 2009; Deb Nath et al., 2011; Mohiuddin et al., 2012). To verify the soundness of the present heat conduction code results using the finite difference method, the distribution of temperature at some sections of a 2D heated plate obtained by the analytical method is compared with those of the plate obtained by the present finite difference method. Interpolation technique is used as an example when the boundary of the plate does not pass through the discretized grid points of the plate. Sometimes hot and cold fluids are passed through rectangular channels in industries and many types of technical equipment. The distribution of temperature of plates including notches, slots with different temperature boundary conditions are studied. Transient heat transfer in several pure metallic plates is also studied to find out the required time to reach equilibrium temperature. So, this study will help find design parameters of such structures.

In order to study the mechanical behavior of concrete-filled steel tube(CFST) short column with different void ratios under a certain eccentricity. A fiber model of concrete-filled steel tube section with different void heights was established. Compared with existing model test data, the axial force and flexural moment strength models of concrete-filled steel tube columns with different void ratios were established. The results show that, in the case of different void ratios, the cross-section strength envelope shows an overall contraction tendency with the increase of void ratio, and each line is basically parallel. A model for calculating the coefficient of axial load degradation was established. The Han’s flexural moment strength model of the flexural component was revised, and the strength model of concrete-filled steel tube column under eccentric compression considering void ratio was established, which provides a theoretical basis and method for the safety assessment during the operation of concrete-filled steel tube arch bridges.
