Structural properties of various kinds of room-temperature synthesized C60 fullerene nanowhiskers were investigated by TEM and XRD. The C60 nanowhiskers prepared by use of toluene lost their initial solvated hexagonal structure faster than the C60 nanowhiskers prepared by use of m-xylene. The hexagonal structure of C60 nanowhiskers prepared by use of toluene was stabilized by adding C60[C(COOC2H5)2]. These results suggest that large solute molecules in the C60 nanowhisker matrix stabilize their initially solvated hexagonal structure. Furthermore, the addition of a sufficient amount of C60(2-methoxycarbonyl-N-methylpyrrolidine) into the m-xylene solution of C60 produced the C60 nanowhiskers indicating the formation of ordered solid solution of C60 and C60(2-methoxycarbonyl-N-methylpyrrolidine).

The Clar number of a fullerene graph with $n$ vertices is bounded above by $ \floor { n // 6 } − 2 $ and this bound has been improved to $ \floor{ n//6 } − 3 $ when $n$ is congruent to 2 modulo 6. We can construct at least one fullerene graph attaining the upper bounds for every even number of vertices $ n \ge 20 $ except $n = 22 $ and $ n = 30 $.

We show that band electrons in A$\text{}_{n}$C$\text{}_{60}$ crystal (C$\text{}_{60}$ fullerene doped with alkali ions A) are in highly chaotic quantum state. We describe intensity of the chaos by means of the Shannon information entropy, which we calculate using single particle Bloch functions. The entropy provides a quantitative measure of scars as well as degree of electrons delocalization in gaps between C$\text{}_{60}$ molecules. Implications of our results for conductivity in A$\text{}_{3}$C$\text{}_{60}$ are discussed.

We use quantum billiard with many scattering centers to describe conducting electrons properties in A$\text{}_{n}$C$\text{}_{60}$ crystals, where A denotes alkali metal. We focus our attention on the A$\text{}_{3}$C$\text{}_{60}$ crystal, for which we calculate the band structure, density of states, and conductivity for normal electrons. Conductivity shows linear dependence on temperature in this model, which agrees well with experimental data. We also discuss consequences of our results for superconductivity mechanism in A$\text{}_{3}$C$\text{}_{60}$ and possibilities of analogous approach to describe electron properties in fused fullerenes and multiply connected carbon clusters.

The structure, topography and morphology of Pd–C films were studied by AFM (atomic force microscopy), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), Raman and FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) methods. It was found that an increasing content of palladium in films causes a decrease in their roughness and size of nanograins. The topography and morphology of Pd–C films depend on the content of palladium in the film, what was found from the analysis of SEM and AFM images. FTIR and Raman spectra show that the content of fullerene and palladium in the film strongly depends on technological parameters of PVD (physical vapor deposition) process.

Opis:
Molecules of C$\text{}_{60}$ form Van der Waals type crystals. The observations reported here concern EPR investigations of such C$\text{}_{60}$ samples with only a slight amount of Rb or K. Detected defects are (C$\text{}_{60}$)$\text{}^{+}$ or (C$\text{}_{60}$)$\text{}^{y-}$ ion-radicals. A hole (h) or trapped electron (t) are localized on one fullerene ball. In the case of potassium fullerites C$\text{}_{60}$:K the line shape of EPR signal was of the Dysonian form which is characteristic of conducting electrons in metal. The EPR lines of holes (C$\text{}_{60}$)$\text{}^{+}$ are characterized by g$\text{}_{h}$ ≥ g$\text{}_{0}$ whereas for electrons g$\text{}_{t}$ is below the value g$\text{}_{0}$ = 2.0023 characteristic of a free electron (g$\text{}_{t}$ ≤ g$\text{}_{0}$). The EPR linewidth 2ΔB$\text{}_{1s}^{h}$ of the (C$\text{}_{60}$)$\text{}^{+}$ weakly increased with decreasing temperature whereas the EPR linewidth attributed to the electron 2ΔB$\text{}^{t}$$\text{}_{1s}$ significantly decreases with decreasing temperature. The C$\text{}_{60}$:K sample reached superconducting phase below T$\text{}_{c}$ = 11 K which is significantly less than T$\text{}_{c}$ = 16.5 K observed for K$\text{}_{x}$C$\text{}_{60}$ where 2 ≤ x ≤ 4.

Modelling of the quantum interaction properties of nitrone on the fullerene C60 has been investigated by the use of PM3 calculations. It has been found that the interaction potential of the nitrone with the fullerene C60 led to stable complexes when the fullerene reacted with the carbon atom ($C^1$-centered) and metastable conformations with carbon atom ($C^2$-centered). We have studied the effect of two rotation characteristics (nitrone and $NOCH_2$ group) on the binding between the fullerene C60 with the nitrone. Our results suggested that the binding energy is lower as the nitrone rotation increases and the $NOCH_2$ group rotation showed more effect. The fullerene C60 may be able to do more linking with molecules of nitrone.

We present high temperature dc, ac and contactless microwave conductivity results on solid-state C$\text{}_{60}$ (films and crystals) from room temperature up to 850 K. Heating pristine samples, which were exposed to the ambient atmosphere, under dynamic vacuum at first leads to a reduction of the electrical resistance and finally, above ≈700 K, to an increase in the resistance. The decrease is ascribed to oxygen desorption and the increase to the chemical reactivity of residual chemisorbed oxygen with the C$\text{}_{60}$ host molecules, respectively. Samples, annealed above 800 K, display a reversible temperature dependence of the resistance. The high temperature regime of their resistance exhibits an activated behaviour with an universal activation energy of 2E$\text{}_{a}$ = 1.85 ± 0.04 eV for crystals and films, which is identical to the HOMO-LUMO splitting of the C$\text{}_{60}$-molecules.

One of critical factor in determining the performance of solar cells is the morphology of the active layer. The drying process of the active layer prepared by inkjet printing technique plays a key role in obtaining high quality surface morphology. This paper reports the effect of thermal annealing on the morphology of printed active layer. The printed active layer is a blend of poly(3-octylthiophene-2,5-diyl) and (6,6)-phenyl $C_{71}$ butyric acid methyl ester dissolved in a mixture of dichlorobenzene:mesitylene. The printed films were then annealed at three different temperatures, namely 120, 140, and 160C for 60 min to obtain the best performance of solar cells. It was found that the performance of solar cells strongly depends on the annealing temperature. The devices with the active layer annealed at 140C exhibits the highest performance with short circuit current density and open circuit voltage as high as 2.88 μA/$cm^2$ and 0.85 V, respectively. The effect of annealing on the properties of printed active layer will be discussed.

K+@C60 endohedral fullerenes inside armchair, zigzag and chiral nanotubes were simulated using the MD technique. The structure of the endohedral fullerene sample was estimated by calculating the radial distribution function. The angular and translational velocity autocorrelation functions and their Fourier transforms were also calculated. The frequency dependence of potassium ion vibrations in different nanotubes at room temperature was observed and discussed. A dependenci between the angular motion of endo-fullerenes and the nanotube chirality was found.

Opis:
The electronic structure of the ground state of fullerene-like and wurtzite-like $Zn_{n}O_{n}$ and $Zn_{n - x}Cd_{x}O_{n}$ clusters has been investigated by computer physics methods. A relative evaluation of the stability and band gap width of clusters depending on the number of atoms in the cluster and its geometry has been performed. The model of a fullerene-like $(ZnO)_{60}$ particle with a mixed $sp^3//sp^2$ type of bonds has been constructed. A $(ZnO)_{12}$ cluster of $T_{h}$ symmetry was taken as a base of the model. Within the framework of the B3LYP electron density hybrid functional method with a set of 3-21G(d) split valence basis functions, a numerical investigation of the influence of the incorporation of cadmium (33%) into the ZnO matrix on the electronic structure and the band gap width has been performed.

Bilayer sandwich structures were fabricated by the sequential thermal evaporation of gold, copper phthalocyanine (CuPc), C$\text{}_{60}$ and gold onto sapphire substrates. When the current-voltage characteristics of a freshly made device are measured in an atmosphere of argon, fairly strong rectification is observed. When the bilayer device is exposed to ammonia vapor, the rectification slowly decreases and almost disappears. If the device is then placed under vacuum and the ammonia removed, the initial conditions slowly return. We attribute the rectification to the formation of a p-n junction.

Phase transition in polycrystalline fullerene C$\text{}_{60}$ from fcc phase to a simple cubic phase sc induced by hydrostatic pressure up to 0.5GPa was studied by dielectric method. Pressure coefficient dT$\text{}_{c}$/dp=144±8 K/GPa was determined. This value is consistent with pressure coefficients obtained with other experimental techniques.

Fullerenes (C60) and fullerene-based composites are considered as promising substrates for biological cell colonization. It might be mainly due to their nanostructure, resembling the nanoarchitecture of the natural extracellular matrix. Thin films of binary C60/Ti composites with various concentrations of Ti ranging from 25% (i.e., 25 Ti atoms and 75 C60 molecules) to 70% were deposited on microscopic glass coverslips in micro-patterned form through a metallic mask, and were tested for their potential use in bone tissue engineering. It is known that fullerenes and their derivatives can cause cytotoxic injury, cell death or inhibition of cell growth. These effects are based mainly on the reactivity of fullerenes, which may weaken with time due to the oxidization and polymerization of fullerenes in an air atmosphere. We therefore tested the dependence between the age of C60/Ti composites (i.e., from one week to one year) and the level of DNA damage of human osteoblast-like MG 63 cells in cultures on these materials. The DNA damage was analyzed by immunofluorescence staining of markers of DNA damage response, such as phosphorylation of histone H2AX and focal recruitment of p53-binding protein. As positive control to markers of DNA damage response was used 7 days long treatment with 2,5 mM Thymidine. We also monitored the proliferation and morphological changes of the cells. After 7 days of cultivation, we observe no cytotoxic morphological changes, such as enlarged cells or cytosolic vacuole formation, which are signs of cell senescence, and no increased induction of cell death. In addition, there was no increased level of DNA damage response on the C60/Ti composites (FIG.1). We also found no significant differences in cell population densities and no increased level of DNA damage among various Ti concentrations (FIG.1). Moreover, there was no effect of the age of the C60/Ti composites on the cell population densities or on the DNA damage response (FIG.1). These results suggest that fullerenes in combination with Ti do not cause cytotoxic injury and this material could be used in bone tissue engineering.

We have observed the piezoelectric and elastooptic effects for the 2-cyclooctylamino-5-nitropyridine complex, chromophore doped by an inter-molecular acceptor – fullerene C70. The discovered features may be used for optically operated piezoelectric triggers, modulators and deflectors. The observed effects are caused by the effective interaction of external light with the polarizable chromophore. As a pumping laser beam we have used both a nanosecond fundamental 1064 nm laser wavelength as well as its second harmonic generation at 532 nm. A principal role in the observed effects play photoinduced anharmonic phonons, effectively contributing to the output effect.
