Opis:
This paper deals with a nonlinear problem modelling the contact between an elastic body and a rigid foundation. The elastic constitutive law is assumed to be nonlinear and the contact is modelled by the well-known Signorini conditions. Two weak formulations of the model are presented and existence and uniqueness results are established using classical arguments of elliptic variational inequalities. Some equivalence results are presented and a strong convergence result involving a penalized problem is also proved.

We study an evolution problem which describes the quasistatic contact of a viscoelastic body with a foundation. We model the contact with normal damped response and a local friction law. We derive a variational formulation of the model and we establish the existence of a unique weak solution to the problem. The proof is based on monotone operators and fixed point arguments. We also establish the continuous dependence of the solution on the contact boundary conditions.

Opis:
Wheel-rail thermoelastic contact problem is analysed and numerically solved in the paper. The surface of the rail is assumed to consist from layers having distinct constant material parameters and a functionally graded material layer between. Thermal and mechanical properties of the graded layer are dependent on its depth rather than constant as it is considered in the literature. Numerous laboratory experiments indicate that graded materials layers or coatings covering the conventional steel body can reduce the magnitude of contact and/or thermal stresses as well as the noise and the rolling contact fatigue. The contact phenomenon includes friction as well as frictional heat generation and wear. Quasistatic numerical approach is used to solve numerically this contact problem. Numerical results are provided and discussed.

Opis:
The paper deals with the problem of development of fatigue cracks in a surface layer, which is at present one of the most actual issues of contact mechanics. The results obtained by the authors from experimental and numerical investigations of the factors, which exert an essential influence on the propagation process of a crack of the "squat" type in the wheel/rail contact zone are presented. In the first part of the work, the results obtained using the Immersion Method of Holographic Interferometry from the investigation into the shapes of faces of the cracks detected in rail heads are presented. Furthermore the experimental investigations into crack faces interactions conducted on the samples made of 900A steel under comlex loads obtained by means of the Grating Holographic Interferometry are presented as well. In the second part of the paper, the results of numerical investigations into 3D cracks of the "squat" type are discussed, with a complex stress state in the contact zone, stresses due to rail bending, residual stresses as well as thermal stresses taken into account. The investigations of the effect of conditions of crack faces interaction on simulation results, which have been conducted using 2D models are presented as well. Eight different cases were considered, and the results having the form of Stress Intansity Factor... courses versus the load position relative to the crack are presented. In the last part of the work the results of numerical simulations of rolling the wheel over the raceway with an oblique crack are presented. The conditions of crack faces interaction used in simulations were determined, basing on the experimental investigations.
Problemy mechaniki kontaktu - rozwój pęknięć zmęczeniowych w warstwie wierzchniej. The solution for a multifield material subjected to temperature loading in a circular region is presented in an explicit analytical form. The study concerns the steady – state thermal loading infinite region (heated embedded inclusion), half – space region and two – constituent magneto – electro – thermo – elastic material region. The new mono – harmonic potential functions, obtained by the author, are used in the analysis of punch problem. The more interested case in which the contact region is annular is analyzed. By using the methods of triple integraf equations and series solution technique the solution for an indentured multifield substrate over an annular contact region is given. The sensitivity analysis of obtained indentation parameters shows some interesting points. In particular, it shows that the increasing of the applied electric and magnetic potentials reduces the indentation depth in multifield materials.

Opis:
We consider a mathematical model which describes the adhesive contact between a linearly elastic body and an obstacle. The process is static and frictionless. The normal contact is governed by two laws. The first one is a Signorini law, representing the fact that there is no penetration between a body and an obstacle. The second one is a Winkler type law signifying that if there is no contact, the bonding force is proportional to the displacement below a given bonding threshold and equal to zero above the bonding threshold. The model leads to a variational-hemivariational inequality. We present the numerical results for solving a simple two-dimensional model problem with the Proximal Bundle Method (PBM). We analyze the method sensitivity and convergence speed with respect to its parameters.

We study a mathematical problem modelling the antiplane shear deformation of a viscoelastic body in frictional contact with a rigid foundation. The contact is bilateral and is modelled with a slip-dependent friction law. We present the classical formulation for the antiplane problem and write the corresponding variational formulation. Then we establish the existence of a unique weak solution to the model, by using the Banach fixed-point theorem and classical results for elliptic variational inequalities. Finally, we prove that the solution converges to the solution of the corresponding elastic problem as the viscosity converges to zero.

In this study, the partial slip contact problem for a monoclinic coated half plane indented by a rigid cylindrical punch is considered. The main objective of current study is to illustrate the effects of material anisotropy on the surface stresses, the contact width and the stick/slip region of the partial slip contact. Using the Fourier integral transform and boundary conditions of the problem, the singular integral equation of the system is obtained. Numerical results of the problem are provided for typical fibrous composites applying the Gauss-Chebyshev discretization method. Sensitivity analysis of the surface stresses is performed for both the material and geometric parameters. The results indicate that the coating fiber angle can significantly alter the distribution of contact tractions. As the fiber angle ranges from θ = 0° to θ = 90°, the contact half-length increases up to 20% whereas the stick zone half-length varies significantly.

Opis:
A plane problem of frictional contact interaction between two elastic isotropic half planes one of which possesses a single shallow recess (depression) is examined in the case of successive application of remote constant normal and shear forces. The loads steps (compression, and next monotonically increasing shear loads) lead to the main contact problem with an unknown stick-slip boundary determined by the Amonton-Coulomb law. It is reduced to a Cauchy-type singular integral equation for the tangential displacement jump in the unknown sliding region. Its size is derived from an additional condition of finiteness of shear stresses at the edges of the slip zone. Considerations are carried out for some general shape of the recess. Analytical results with the characterization of the considered contact are given and illustrated for the certain form of the initial recess.

A numerical method is presented for a mathematical model which describes the frictional contact between a thermo-electro-elastic body and a conductive foundation. The contact is described by Signorini’s conditions and Tresca’s friction law including electrical and ther- mal conductivity conditions. Our aim is to present a detailed description of the numerical modelling of the problem. To this end, we introduce a discrete scheme based on the finite element method. Under some regularity assumptions imposed on the true solution, optimal order error estimates are derived for the linear element solution. This theoretical result is illustrated numerically.

A numerical solution is presented to investigate the influence of the geometry and the amplitude of the transverse ridge on the characteristics of elastohydrodynamic lubrication for point contact problem under steady state condition. Several shapes of ridges with different amplitudes are used in the stationary case, such as flat-top ridge, cosine wave ridge and sharp ridge of triangular shape. Results of film thickness and pressure distributions of the aforementioned ridge feature are presented at different locations through an elastohydrodynamically lubricated contact zone for different amplitude of the ridge. Simulations were performed using the Newton-Raphson iteration technique to solve the Reynolds equation. The numerical results reveal that, to predict optimum solution for lubricated contact problem with artificial surface roughness, the geometrical characteristics of the ridge should have profiles with smooth transitions such as those of a cosine wave shape with relatively low amplitude to reduce pressure spike and therefore cause the reduction in the film thickness. The position of the location of the ridge across the contact zone and the amplitude of the ridge play an important role in the formation of lubricant film thickness and therefore determine the pressure distribution through the contact zone.

We consider a mathematical model which describes the contact between a linearly elastic body and an obstacle, the so-called foundation. The process is static and the contact is bilateral, i.e., there is no loss of contact. The friction is modeled with a nonmotonone law. The purpose of this work is to provide an error estimate for the Galerkin method as well as to present and compare two numerical methods for solving the resulting nonsmooth and nonconvex frictional contact problem. The first approach is based on the nonconvex proximal bundle method, whereas the second one deals with the approximation of a nonconvex problem by a sequence of nonsmooth convex programming problems. Some numerical experiments are realized to compare the two numerical approaches.
