    Introduction and objective. The γ-amino butyric acid (GABA) plays important role in the proliferation and migration of cancer cells. The aim of the study was to evaluate the level of GABA in breast cancer, in relation to clinical and epidemiological data. Materials and method. The study was conducted on 89 patients with breast cancer in stage I-II. GABA level was assessed using spectrofluorometric method in tumour homogenates. Immunoexpression of E-cadherin was evaluated histologically on paraffin fixed specimens. Overall and disease-free survival was assessed for a 15-year interval period. Results. Median overall survival was significantly longer (127.2 months) in patients with a high level of GABA (>89.3 μg/1), compared with a group with a low level of the amino acid (106.4 months). Disease-free survival was insignificantly different – 99 and 109 months, respectively. A significantly longer overall survival (131.2 months) was seen among patients with a high level of GABA and positive E-cadherin immunoexpression, compared with a group characterized by a low level of GABA and lack of E-cadherin immunorectivity (98.1 months). The co-existence of negative immunoexpression of E-cadherin and low GABA concentration resulted in a six-fold increase in the risk of death (HR=6.03). Conclusion. GABA has a significant prognostic value in breast cancer. Co-existence of a low level of GABA and loss of E-cadherin immune-expression seems to be a new, independent, and negative prognostic marker of the neoplasm.

    Introduction. The main mediators of the sympathetic nervous system in the effectors part are catecholamines (CA). An increased sympathetic nerve activity observed in chronic kidney disease (CKD), is due to a raised level of CA in plasma. Renalase is a protein secreted by the kidneys, composed of 342 amino acids, which is able to metabolize the circulating CA and possibly play an important role in the regulation of sympathetic tone and blood pressure. Also, oxidative stress, defined as a disruption of the equilibrium between the generation of oxidants, is a crucial factor in the development of the inflammatory syndrome associated with CKD. The advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) represent exquisite markers of phagocyte-derived oxidative stress. Objective. The aim of the study was to investigate the concentration of renalase and explore the associations between AOPP with regards to CA in haemodialysis (HD) patients. Materials and method. The study was conducted among 50 residents of the municipality and neighbouring villages in the province of Lublin, central-eastern Poland. Results. In the studied patients, it was found that an average concentration of renalase was 44.8 ± 6.5 μg/mL, whereas of AOPP plasma levels – 57.5 ± 21.5 μmol/L. The results demonstrated the correlation between levels of renalase and AOPP in the HD patients. Indeed, elevated levels of renalase and AOPP in HD may be due to the presence of uremic toxins in blood. The concentration of urea affects the plasma concentrations of AOPP and renalase causing a direct relationship between renalase and AOPP. However, there is no clear relationship between renalase and circulating catecholamines in HD patients.

    Publikowane listy Ludwika Solskiego do córki – Anny Sosnowskiej (1905–1997) pochodzą z lat 1945–1954. Większość z nich aktor wysyłał z Krakowa, gdzie wtedy mieszkał, kilka z miast, w których przebywał na występach gościnnych (Warszawa, Bielsko) lub wypoczywał (Krynica, Morawin). Anna od 1945 przebywała za granicą. W Paryżu miała kłopoty ze znalezieniem stałej pracy, uczyła się stenografii. Solski pisze o warunkach życia w kraju, pogarszającym się zdrowiu, przekazach pieniężnych dla córki i paczkach od niej, przed którymi się wzbraniał. Towarzyszy mu ciągła troska o córkę. Listy i kartki pocztowe dotyczą przede wszystkim spraw prywatnych, ale dowiadujemy się z nich też wiele o pracy aktora, o objazdach z Grubymi rybami Bałuckiego po całym kraju i reakcjach publiczności, o uroczystościach jubileuszowych w 1951 i 1954. Korespondencja pokazuje pracę artysty teatralnego i funkcjonowanie teatru w Polsce w pierwszych latach powojennych. Listy Solskiej – matki do córki ogłosiła Lidia Kuchtówna (Listy Ireny Solskiej, Warszawa 1984). Teraz możliwa jest lektura listów obojga rodziców do Anny, kierowanych do Paryża. Zamieszczamy 61 listów. Oryginały (rękopisy, przeważnie z kopertami) znajdują się  w Muzeum Teatru im. Henryka Tomaszewskiego we Wrocławiu. W 2015 pamiątki po Ludwiku i Irenie Solskich, wśród nich listy, podarował Muzeum Mathias von Poswik, wnuk brata Solskiej, który wszedł w ich posiadanie po śmierci Anny Sosnowskiej.
    Ludwik Solski's published letters to his daughter - Anna Sosnowska (1905-1997) - come from 1945-1954. Most of them were sent by the actor from Krakow, where he lived at that time, from several of the cities where he stayed during guest performances (Warsaw, Bielsko) or rested (Krynica, Morawin). Anna lived abroad after 1945. In Paris, she had trouble finding a permanent job; she was studying shorthand. Solski writes about living conditions in Poland, his deteriorating health, money transfers for his daughter and parcels from her, which he begged her not to send him. He expresses constant care for his daughter. Letters and postcards concern primarily private affairs, but we also learn a lot about the actor's work, tours with Bałucki’s Grube ryby (Big Shots) around the country and audience reactions, jubilee celebrations in 1951 and 1954. The correspondence shows the work of a theatre artist and the functioning of the theatre in Poland in the first post-war years. Solska’s letters - mother to daughter, were published by Lidia Kuchtówna (Irena Solska’s Letters, Warsaw, 1984). Now it is possible to read the letters of both parents to Anna, sent to Paris. We include 61 letters. The originals (manuscripts, mostly with envelopes) are at Henryk Tomaszewski Museum of the Theatre in Wrocław. In 2015, souvenirs of Ludwik and Irena Solski, among them letters, were donated to the Museum by Mathias von Poswik, grandson of Solska’s brother, who came into their possession after the death of Anna Sosnowska.
