Renewable energy sources (RES) have significant potential to contribute to the economic, social and environmental energy sustainability of small islands. They improve access to energy for most of the population, they also reduce emissions of local and global pollutants and they may create local socioeconomic development opportunities. A majority of the communities around the world rely heavily on oil, natural gas and coal for their energy needs. These fuels draw on lots of resources that will eventually diminish, which in turn makes them too expensive or too environmentally damaging to recover. This review article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of renewable energies; therefore based on the benefits of these energy resources, the use of renewable energies, instead of, fossil fuels will be a good solution for the control of the environmental, social and economical problems of our communities.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, entrepreneurs are able to use the innovations at the universities in order to set up their own business. That collaboration is part of the concept of the “Third Generation University”. The aim of this paper is to outline some possibilities for innovative business development in the Ruse region, Bulgaria that are aimed at supporting technostarters who use biomass for energy production. It describes the need of renewable energy sources in EU context, gives some arguments in university support to entrepreneurs and describes an example of the collaboration of Ruse University with a company that uses biomass for energy production.

The reduction of natural resources and the ever increasing demand for energy forces research on new energy sources. In the case of obtaining energy from non-renewable sources of energy, natural resources are used as fuel in the combustion process. This way relatively high calorific value is achieved but it is associated with the number of fundamental flaws. Among other things, this may include destruction of the environment in the vicinity of extraction of conventional fuels’ sources, emission of large amounts of harmful substances during the combustion of conventional fuels causing the pollution of natural environment and there is a danger of life or health loss for people working in the extraction of fossil fuels. The use of renewable energy sources is related to interesting investment opportunities in the energy field and there are no problems mentioned above. For these reasons, it is worthwhile to conduct research on improving investment efficiency by using new, renewable sources. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is showing the opportunities of improving efficiency of electric power investment by using renewable energy sources. This article presents a comprehensive overview of renewable technologies used to produce electricity. Then, the attention was focused on assessing the financial efficiency of wind turbines. The considerations were illustrated with the examples of calculation of financial ratios NPV and IRR for a hypothetical investment in the production of electric power using the wind farm. The calculations and analysis conducted can provide interesting basis for further research on improving electric power investment efficiency by using renewable energy sources and new comprehensive evaluation methods of such investments. Comprehensive evaluation methods should take into consideration multifaceted nature of the projects.

The energy market paradigm shift towards the so called “green revolution” assumes that in the next few decades dispersed energy sources will replace centralized generation systems. Despite growing energy related spatial conflicts, already accompanying the development of dispersed generation, it is not clear how to integrate new energy infrastructure into planning procedures. This article presents a new approach at the regional level, by unveiling the technology diffusion theory and its implications for the development planning of renewable energy sources (RES). It suggests how to integrate energy related issues into regional spatial policy, by presenting prospects for agricultural biogas plants (ABPs) in the Lubelskie region, Poland; dwelling on the experiences from a best practice region Lower Saxony, Germany.

The study shows an analysis of renewable energy sources in terms of their use in agritourist farms. The conducted survey aimed at finding out whether it was the respondents’ age, farm size or incomes obtained from different sources that had the biggest impact on decisions to invest in ecological energy media. An answer was provided to the question whether implementation of ecological energy systems was followed by significant reduction in agritourist activity costs. The level of interest in such energy media among farmers who do not use them was assessed. The attitude of agritourist service providers toward more effective utilization of natural resources to the advantage of the natural environment was determined.

Environmental emission of road transport is a key problem. Periodic environmental test are designed to ensure minimum emission. Periodic checks are based on measurements. In this emission measurements fuel type plays an important role. The Brettschneider equation is a method used to compare the idealized and actual air fuel ratio. Brettschneider established a method to calculate ratio of oxygen to fuel by comparing the ratio of oxygen molecules to carbon and hydrogen molecules in the exhaust. In this article, authors have investigated blended ethanol effect on idealized and actual air fuel ratio based on Brettschneider equation. The main result of the article that blended ethanol has insignificant effect on air-fuel ratio. The article presents inter alia difference in stoichiometric air fuel ratios in case of different fuels, changes in λ due to blending ethanol and comparison of influence of emissions of different types of transport. In the article authors focus particularly on periodic checks and gasoline driven cars. The main research question was if ethanol blends have effect on idealized and actual air fuel ratio based on Brettschneider equation

Because of deteriorating condition of the environment and more and more difficult situation on the market of energy fuels, the role of renewable energy sources is increasing. In the paper an analysis was performed on the development limitations and perspectives of renewable energy sources on the Polish market. The analysis conducted shows that the renewable energy sources start to be used in a bigger scale in Poland. It may also be noticed that the significance of the particular renewable energy sources is dynamically changing in time. In year 2005 hydropower was largely dominating among the renewable energy sources, however, in 2016 wind power was clearly prevailing. One of the most important factors determining the development of renewable energy sources in Poland are legal conditions. They were subject to analysis, taking into account the European Union regulations and Polish regulations. The research was based on literature review, analysis of legal regulations and of data coming from the reports and statistics published by the Central Statistical Office, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Environment, Energy Regulatory Office, Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, and other organizations.

W pracy przedstawiono wybrane problemy dotyczące kilku odnawialnych źródeł energii (OZE), takich jak energia: wiatru, promieniowania słonecznego oraz geotermalna z wnętrza Ziemi. W oparciu o dostępną literaturę dokonano oceny dostępności energii tych źródeł, następnie przedstawiono typowe rozwiązania techniczne umożliwiające konwersję energii odnawialnej w energię elektryczną i/lub ciepło, a także pokazano na przykładach współcześnie działające elektrownie wiatrowe, kolektory słoneczne, stawy słoneczne, panele fotowoltaiczne oraz instalacje grzewcze z pompą ciepła. Pokazano zarówno obecne, jak i prognozowane do 2035 roku, światowe zapotrzebowanie ludzkości na energię oraz zwrócono uwagę na wady i zalety związane z wykorzystaniem poszczególnych źródeł energii odnawialnej.
The paper presents selected issues on several renewable energy sources (RES) such as: wind, solar, and geothermal energy from the Earth's interior. Based on the available literature an assessment of the energy sources availability was made, then typical technical solutions to convert renewable energy into electricity and/or heat were presented, and finally some examples of contemporary wind turbines, solar panels, solar ponds and heating systems with heat pumps were shown. In addition to this the current and projected up to 2035 year global demand for energy was given and the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of various sources of renewable energy were highlighted.

W artykule przedstawiono w ogólnym zarysie problematykę wykorzystania odnawialnych źródeł energii w gospodarce litewskiej. Na podstawie literatury przedmiotu oraz dokumentów źró- dłowych opisano istotne czynniki wpływające na rozwój tych źródeł energii, które też uległy zmianie po przystąpieniu Litwy do Unii Europejskiej. Z tego względu w artykule przedstawiono analizę polityki energetycznej Litwy wraz ze strategią energetyczną tego państwa do 2020 roku. W badaniu wskazano na uwarunkowania wewnętrzne wynikające między innymi ze struktury gospodarki oraz posiadanych zasobów surowców energetycznych, wyszczególniając źródła energii odnawialnej (energia wodna, słoneczna, wiatrowa, biomasa). Bilans energetyczny został poddany szczegółowej analizie, ponieważ jest podstawowym narzędziem określającym udział energii odnawialnej w bilansie paliwowo-energetycznym Litwy. Przeprowadzona analiza pozwala na sformułowanie wniosków podsumowujących artykuł.
This article considers modern trends in the development of renewable energy (RE) in Lithuania in the period 2003–2014. The national Lithuanian energy policy complies with the current EU energy regulations. The European Commission approved the implementation of the ‘‘Community Strategy and Action Plan on Renewable Energy’’, and the European Parliament adopted a directive on the ‘‘Promotion of Electricity Produced from Renewable Energy Sources in the Internal Electricity Market’’. The Republic of Lithuania Law on Energy from Renewable Sources contains sectoral objectives: to increase the share of electricity produced from RES up to at least 20% of the final national consumption, to increase the share of centrally supplied heat energy, produced from RES, up to at least 60%, of the heat energy balance, and to increase the share of RES used in households up to at least 80% of the total energy consumption balance. According to the Lithuanian Department of Statistics, Lithuania has already reached the 23% target: in 2014, the share of RES in the total energy balance of the country exceeded one fifth, accounting for 23.66%. The article generates the reasons, according to which the utilization of renewable energy is efficient and cost effective way to increase energy self-sufficiency of Lithuania. The certain conclusions about renewable energy (RE) in Lithuania were made on the basis of conducted analysis.

The study deals with barriers to be overcome by agritourist farm owners who choose to invest in renewable energy sources. Research was done in order to check whether before undertaking the investment they raised their qualifications and used financial means offered by the government. In order to obtain information on the possibilities of ecological technologies development in rural areas, also farmers who do not use ecological energy media were interviewed. Both farmer groups were surveyed for information on development prospects of small technologies in rural areas. Farmers involved in agritourist activity were asked whether undertaking the risk of purchasing ‘green equipment’ provided them with measurable benefits.

Celem badań było wykazanie zróżnicowania kształtowania się kosztów wytwarzania energii elektrycznej, ciepła i paliw transportowych. Wykorzystując dane dostępne w literaturze i badania własne wykazano, że na obecnym etapie rozwoju jedynie energia pochodząca z biomasy odpadowej jest w stanie konkurować z energią konwencjonalną. Dotychczasowe tendencje wskazują, że w przyszłości, dzięki postępowi technologicznemu OZE mogą być konkurencyjnie cenowo w porównaniu do źródeł konwencjonalnych. Do tego czasu wymagają wsparcia finansowego, aby nowe technologie można było zastosować w skali zapewniającej ich opłacalność.
The aim of this study was to demonstrate the diversity of formation of the costs of electricity, heat and transport fuels. Using the data available in the literature and own research has shown that at the present stage of development, only energy from waste biomass is able to compete with conventional energy. Past trends suggest that in the future, thanks to technological progress RES can be competitively priced compared to conventional sources. Until then require financial support to new technologies can be applied on a scale sufficient to ensure their profitability.

Due to the damage to the environment and climate caused by the generation of electricity in power plants burning fossil fuels, installations generating it from renewable energy sources are constructed. Spatial development plans for communes should consider their location. In Poland, generation of electricity in photovoltaic cells, wind farms and agricultural biogas plants has the greatest development potential. Due to the nuisance to people and the environment, wind turbines and agricultural biogas plants must be located far from residential buildings. Such conditions exist in sparsely populated rural areas. The observed development of single-family housing in rural areas is the result of the search for cheap construction sites and no local spatial development plans in most areas of rural communes. Dispersed housing construction restricts the construction of wind farms and agricultural biogas plants and thus poses a threat to renewable sources of wind and biogas energy produced in agricultural biogas plants. The situation may be changed by the requirement to include in spatial development plans the needs related to the construction of installations generating electricity from renewable energy sources and the construction of micro and small biogas plants directly at the sites where waste is generated.

Improvement in the efficiency of use of energy resources and the environment condition as a result of reduced atmosphere and water pollution is directly related to the intensive development of renewable energy sources. The growing share of renewable sources in the energy mix makes it possible to reorganize the power system operations, e.g. by creating local energy balancing areas (LOB). The paper presents selected results of model tests, aimed at determining the necessary conditions to enable a separated island area’s resynchronization with the power system.
Poprawa efektywności wykorzystania zasobów surowców energetycznych oraz stanu środowiska w wyniku redukcji zanieczyszczeń do atmosfery i wód jest bezpośrednio związana z intensywnym rozwojem odnawialnych źródeł energii. Coraz większy udział źródeł odnawialnych w bilansie energetycznym umożliwia przeorganizowanie sposobu funkcjonowania systemu elektroenergetycznego, np. poprzez tworzenie lokalnych obszarów bilansowania (LOB) samowystarczalnych energetycznie. W artykule zamieszczono wybrane wyniki badań modelowych, mających na celu wyznaczenie warunków niezbędnych do spełnienia, aby umożliwić resynchronizację wydzielonego obszaru wyspowego z systemem energetycznym.
