Opis:
The relationship between tree-ring growth and climate in Quercus brantii, a widespread and dominant tree species in Zagros-Anti-Taurus Mountains, was investigated by both age-dependent and independent approaches. A total number of 118 trees were sampled in a region where severe Mediterranean climate prevailed. An overall chronology plus three age-dependent chronologies of <80, 80 to 160 and >160 years old were constructed to study growth-climate relationships based on an integrated approach of principle component stepwise regression followed by complementary response function analysis. High age heterogeneity of overall chronology diminished its climatic signals and growth priority was significantly presented in the models. Biennial and triennial precipitation variations were highly related with annual tree ring growth of young and old oaks, respectively. However, hot growing season negatively affected all age-dependent chronology indices. By increasing tree ages the negative effects of warm autumn prior to growth decreased and late winter fall became a limiting climatic factor in old trees. Results of response function analysis also revealed that all oak trees from each age classes were sensitive to increasing April temperature. It’s anticipated that, regarding the trends of late frost, this species will face with many challenges in this region and similar areas.

Opis:
Leaves from three fig (Ficus carica L.) varieties (White, Black Royal and White Royal) were collected at different development stages of the tree, i.e. flowering, fruit development, fruit maturity, and postharvest, after which the variation of macro- (K, Na, Ca, Mg, N, P) and micronutrient (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, B) concentrations during the growing season were measured. The leaf concentrations of N, P, K, Ca and Mg during the studied period for the White variety ranged from 19 to 25, from 1.1 to 1.3, from 13 to 18, from 20 to 24 and from 2.7 to 2.9 g kg-1 (on dry weight basis DW), respectively. The corresponding values for the Black Royal variety ranged from 22 to 26, from 1.1 to 1.4, from 13 to 19, from 23 to 29 and from 2.5 to 3.4 g kg-1 (DW), respectively. The corresponding values for the White Royal variety ranged from 19 to 25, 0.9 to 1.2, 10 to 17, 26 to 30 and 4.3 to 4.5 g kg-1 (DW), respectively. The leaf content values of Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, and B during the studied period for the White variety ranged from 107 to 147, from 42 to 35, from 10 to 9, from 52 to 61 and from 23 to 40 mg kg-1 (DW), respectively. The corresponding values for the Black Royal variety ranged from 77 to 155, from 38 to 41, from 8 to 9, from 52 to 66 and from 23 to 56 mg kg-1 (DW), respectively. The corresponding values for the White Royal variety ranged from 84 to 126, from 44 to 48, from 8 to 9, from 88 to 98 and from 23 to 47 mg kg-1 (DW), respectively. According to the results, the leaf nutritional content varies in the plant’s development stages and there were differences between the fig varieties in the nutrient content at different development stages, which indicated that different varieties of plants need different amounts of nutrients during the growing cycle. These results should be taken into consideration when elaborating a fertilization program.

Opis:
In terms of climate forecasting, the Mediterranean region is among the most difficult. It is correlated with the five significant subtropical high pressure belts of the oceans and is symbolized by dry and hot summer and cold and rainy winter. Due to its location in the area, Albania is particularly susceptible to climatic changes. It has been noted that summertime sees the greatest temperature increases. More intense heat waves that stay longer and occur more frequently are anticipated in the eastern Mediterranean. The seasonal patterns of precipitation have not changed, but the amount of rain has become more intense. The effects of climate change have drawn attention to various renewable energy sources, including solar and wind power. In this study, the changes and prospective in average temperature, rainfall, humidity, CO2 emission and their impact in energy production were investigated. Several different models such as Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average method; Prophet algorithm; Elastic-Net Regularized Generalized Linear Model; Random Forest Regression models; Prophet Boost algorithm; have been built for the study and prediction of each variable. The appropriate models are used to determine the anticipated values of the indicators for a period of four years. The prediction shows an increase in CO2 emission which leads to a decrease in energy production by hydropower. These findings suggest the use of other renewable sources for energy production in the country and the Mediterranean region.

The world agriculture uses about 70% of the world water resources in irrigation. The concern over the sustainability of water use as demand for agricultural, industrial, and domestic uses continues to increase. Conflicts between particular sectors result in tensions, which some- times lead to “water wars” in different parts of the world. It is the reason why many national and international organizations are putting the water quantity and quality questions on the top of the world’s open questions/problems. The main aim of this paper is to present soil water balance of the Mediterranean region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, prepared for a long-term time series for two locations (Trebinje and Mostar) annually and during the vegetation period. The mean long-term data has been used as a base for future predicted calculation. The predicted PET was based on an increase in air temperature by 2°C and predicted decrease in precipitation by 25%. With so pre- dicted calculated data of monthly PET and monthly precipitation the predicted soil water balance was done.

The preliminary aim of the climatological analysis of the activity of Mediterranean cyclones in Europe is to define the object of study. The type of atmospheric circulation is defined: a Mediterranean cyclone in Central and Eastern Europe (MEC – Mediterranean European Cyclone), i.e. a cyclonic system moving along a trajectory which originates in the Mediterranean Sea basin and reaches an adequately defined area of Europe. As a result of their activity, MECs were assigned precipitation of Mediterranean origin in Poland (Mediterranean Cyclonal Precipitation – MCP).

Opis:
The aim of this study is to compare climatic conditions between the interior of the Iberian Peninsula and the southeastern coast of Spain. The article analyzes selected elements of climate over the last 15 years (2000-2014). Synoptic data from airport meteorological stations in Madrid Barajas and Alicante Elche were used. Attention was focused on annual air temperature, relative humidity and precipitation. The mean climatic conditions over the period 2000-2014 were compared with those over the 1961-1990 period which is recommended by WMO as climate normal and with data for the 1971-2000 coming from ‘Climate Atlas’ of Spanish meteorologists group AEMET. Two of climate elements discussed were characterized by significant changes. The annual air temperature was higher by about 0.2°C in Alicante and 0.9°C in Madrid in the period 2000-2014 compared to the 1961-1990. The current winters were colder than in years 1961-1990 at both stations. Gradual decrease in annual precipitation totals was observed at both stations. In 1961-1990 the annual average precipitation in Madrid amounted to 414 mm, while in Alicante it was 356 mm. However, in the recent years of 2000-2014 these totals were lower compared to 1961-1990 reaching 364.1 mm in the central part of Spain and 245.7 mm on the south-western coast.
