Coetzee's Waiting for Barbarians Following the titular threat of approaching barbarity the article explores the ambiguous concept of the Empire perceived in terms of a mental construct of its inhabitants located in a metaphorical space beyond history and beyond time. Futile attempts to mobilize the "civilised" Imperial identity seen as the barbarians' glorious Other demonstrate however the provisionality of all identity-related definitions based on binary oppositions, pointing to the devastating consequences such political/discursive strategy may bring about. This particular dichotomy, metaphorically located against the background of a symbolic journey into borderland of civilised culture, reveals nevertheless a disturbing truth; the real threat for the Empire's unity lies not in the mysterious and desolate land supposedly occupied by the barbarians, but in the Empire itself, in its spiritual emptiness and its inability to establish its own borders in a way other than that of a negative confrontation.

    This article places Graham Swift’s latest novel Here We Are (2020) in the context of his previous writing and argues that much of his fiction is underpinned by the characters’ desire to transcend the limitations of their ordinary lives and to seek solace or a temporary escape within the realm of illusion. The analysis aims to demonstrate that the opposition between the two realms is the central preoccupation in Here We Are. The wish to surmount the mundane is fulfilled quite literally through the protagonist’s dedication to the practice of magic. The meaning of magic as a craft is briefly discussed, especially its quasi-religious connotations. It is also suggested that magic may be a tentative, personal answer to the problem of the “disenchantment” of the world, as diagnosed by Max Weber a hundred years ago. In Swift’s novel, far from being only a set of professional skills, magic creates an illusory realm, alternative to and more appealing than daily life.

    Opis:
    A striking feature of Muriel Spark’s fiction is its insistence on the reality of the supernatural, which occasionally breaks into the naturalistic level, defying and challenging habitual modes of perception. The fact of Spark being a religious convert is well known, but her faith is manifested in ways different from what is normally assumed to be religious writing. Spark’s novels are never overtly didactic or moralistic; the impact of her faith is manifest in the notion of reality as conveyed by her fiction. Spark’s vision of reality, underlain by her Catholicism, is based on her conviction that empirical reality coexists with the supernatural world; therefore, interactions with the supernatural, however strange they may seem, are presented in her fiction as compellingly plausible. It is argued in the article that Spark’s ontology of fiction is rooted in a tradition going back to Chesterton, who insisted on the paradoxical conjunction of nonsense and faith, both capable of invoking a sense of spiritual wonder at the world we normally take for granted. Memento Mori, Reality and Dreams as well as selected short stories are referenced to illustrate the peculiar combination of the empirical and the supernatural in Spark’s fiction. The article asserts the paradox, central to Spark’s vision of reality, that the supernatural should be accepted as a natural part of profane experience.

    This article analyses Graeme Macrae Burnet’s novel His Bloody Project (2015) as a metafictional exemplification of the problem of truth in historical accounts. Spuriouslyclaiming that his novel contains authentic material related to a nineteenth-century crime, Burnet recounts the case in the form of a collection of miscellaneous texts. The novel may be read in the light of the stance upheld in postmodern historiography that there is no ultimate truth to be reached at the end of a historical enquiry. This analysis of His Bloody Project aims to demonstrate that the obscure, multifaceted truth about the murder case is constituted by all the diverse − even if incongruous and contradictory − perspectives presented in the book.

    This article analyses literary reflections on the process of migration both from and to Ireland in selected contemporary short stories and poems. Changing Skies (2014), an anthology of stories by Manchester Irish writers, represents a wide spectrum of the Irish migrant experience. Although traditionally perceived as a country which has sent waves of emigrants to other parts of the world, recently Ireland has itself become the destination and adopted home for thousands of immigrants. The second part of the article discusses how foreign writers residing in Ireland view the questions of home, identity and migration in two companion volumes of poetry. The concluding section surveys a sample of Irish writers’ reactions to the process of Brexit, which is redefining migration, home and identity both in Britain and on the island of Ireland, and is causing widespread regret in the Irish community that the tendency towards greater diversity, mobility and heterogeneity has been halted.
    Artykuł analizuje literackie refleksje na temat procesu migracji z Irlandii i do Irlandii w wybranych współczesnych opowiadaniach i wierszach. Changing Skies (2014), antologia opowiadań autorstwa irlandzkich pisarzy z Manchesteru, przedstawia szerokie spektrum doświadczeń irlandzkich migrantów. Choć tradycyjnie postrzegana jako źródło fal emigracji, Irlandia ostatnio sama stała się celem dla tysięcy przybyszów. Druga część artykułu omawia kwestie domu, tożsamości i migracji w dwóch pokrewnych zbiorach poezji reprezentujących twórczość zagranicznych pisarzy osiadłych w Irlandii. Końcową część stanowi przegląd wybranych opinii irlandzkich pisarzy na temat Brexitu, który wymusza przedefiniowanie pojęć migracji, domu i tożsamości zarówno w Wielkiej Brytanii, jak i w Irlandii i wywołuje wśród irlandzkiej społeczności ubolewanie, że tendencje do większej różnorodności i mobilności zostały zahamowane.

    This article explores the problem of the self in The Sea by John Banville. The narrator’s professed lack of a stable identity coexists with a multiplication of his different “selves.” It is argued that the splitting of the self in Banville’s novel is more complicated than the split between a narrating self and the subject of narration, common to retrospective first-person narratives. Due to the intensely visual and time-defying nature of his memory, the protagonist seems to revive the past and achieves the sense of a simultaneous existence as two beings. The narrator’s need to locate himself at a fixed point in his narrative, combined with his inability to adopt a definitive perspective, results in a permanent erosion of identity.

    Artykuł analizuje powieść Colma Tóib ́ına Południe jako zapis wewnętrznej przemiany bohaterki, wywołanej kontaktem z obcą kulturą. Wyjazd z Irlandii jest dla Katherine Proctor przede wszystkim ucieczką od rodzinnej i narodowej historii, ale osiedlenie się w Hiszpanii nie prowadzi do pełnej asymilacji w nowym środowisku. Artykuł podkreśla, że do poczucia wyobcowania w istotnym stopniu przyczynia się początkowa nieznajomość języka; nawet jednak po opanowaniu hiszpańskiego (a później także katalońskiego) w stopniu komunikacyjnym przeszkodą w porozumiewaniu się pozostaje brak zrozumienia kontekstu kulturowego. Stopniowe odkrywanie pewnych zbieżności w historii Hiszpanii i Irlandii pozwala natomiast bohaterce na lepsze zrozumienie własnego kraju i akceptację swej irlandzkiej tożsamości.
    El artículo analiza la novela de Colm Tóibín Sur desde el punto de vista de la escritura de la metamórfosis interna de la protagonista que se produce en el contacto que ella tiene con una cultura extranjera. La salida de Irlanda, es para ella una huída de su historia familiar y nacional, sin embargo el hecho de establecerse en España no la lleva a una asimilación en un nuevo contexto cultural. El autor subraya que el desconocimiento de la lengua es un factor que provoca el sentimiento de aislamiento. Incluso, después de haber dominado el castellano y luego el catalán, la protagonista no es capaz de comunicar bien porque no entiende el nevo contexto cutural. Solo gracias al descubrimiento paulatino de la historia de España e Irlanda le permite comprender mejor su país y aceptar su identidad irlandesa.
    This article analyses Colm Tóibín’s novel South as an account of the heroine’s inner transformation, prompted by her contact with an alien culture. Katherine Proctor’s departure from Ireland is primarily an escape from familial and national history, but settlement in Spain does not lead to full assimilation in a new environment. The article stresses that Katherine’s sense of alienation is compounded by her initial ignorance of the language; however, even after she acquires a working knowledge of Spanish (and later also Catalan), her lack of knowledge about the cultural context in which the language functions continues to impede communication. On the other hand, the heroine’s gradual discovery of certain convergences between Spanish and Irish histories enables her to understand her own country better and to come to terms with her Irishness.

Był zasłużonym pracownikiem naukowym Instytutu Języka Polskiego PAN, nauczycielem akademickim, wychowawcą wielu roczników polonistów Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, popularyzatorem wiedzy o języku ojczystym. Wniósł ogromny wkład naukowy i organizacyjny w rozwój „Języka Polskiego”, jednego z najbardziej cenionych polskich czasopism językoznawczych. Do najważniejszych prac Pana Profesora należą następujące publikacje zwarte: Porównawczy słownik trzech wsi małopolskich Rozwój iteratiwów dokonanych w języku polskim; Rodzaj gramatyczny w historii polszczyzny; Jakuba Parkosza traktat o ortografii polskiej; Twoja mowa cię zdradza. Regionalizmy i dialektyzmy języka polskiego; Mały słownik poprawnej polszczyzny. W roku 2000 Instytut Języka Polskiego PAN wydał zbiór jego najważniejszych artykułów naukowych – Polszczyzna dawna i współczesna. Studia i szkice. Profesor Marian Kucała był współredaktorem Słownika staropolskiego oraz twórcą koncepcji i redaktorem Słownika polszczyzny Jana Kochanowskiego. Jego prace naukowe z zakresu językoznawstwa diachronicznego i synchronicznego w najróżniejszych jego aspektach należą do głównego nurtu polskiego i słowiańskiego językoznawstwa. Profesor Marian Kucała prowadził wszechstronne badania językoznawcze, miał ogromną wiedzę na temat funkcjonowania języka polskiego w aspekcie diachronicznym i synchronicznym, cieszył się wielkim uznaniem w środowisku językoznawczym jako naukowiec i jako mistrz, promotor, nauczyciel, redaktor, który wywarł ogromny wpływ na rozwój naukowy wielu językoznawców w Polsce, udzielając im swojej wiedzy i patronując ich pracom naukowym.
    The article shows the silhouette of prof. dr. hab. Marian Kucała (1927–2014), a great linguist, master and teacher. Professor is the author of about 300 books, articles, studies in the field of dialectology, history of Polish language, historical and contemporary lexicography, religious language, onomastics, linguistic correctness, contemporary Polish language and even glottodidactics. He was a distinguished scientist at the Institute of the Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences, an academic teacher, teacher of many Polish students at the Catholic University of Lublin, popularizer of knowledge about native language, which should be described as a language teacher. He made a huge scientific and organizational contribution to the development of “Język Polski”, one of the most valued Polish linguistics journals. The most important of his works are the following compact publications: Porównawczy słownik trzech wsi małopolskich; Rozwój iteratiwów dokonanych w języku polskim; Rodzaj gramatyczny w historii polszczyzny; Jakuba Parkosza traktat o ortografii polskiej; Twoja mowa cię zdradza. Regionalizmy i dialektyzmy języka polskiego; Mały słownik poprawnej polszczyzny. In 2000, the Institute of the Polish Language of the Pollish Academy of Science published a collection of his most important scientific articles: Polszczyzna dawna i współczesna. Studia i szkice. Professor Marian Kucała was the co-editor and editor of such significant lexicographical studies as the Słownik staropolski and the Słownik polszczyzny Jana Kochanowskiego. His scientific works representing diachronic and synchronous linguistics in a variety of aspects have had a significant impact on the development of Polish and Slavic linguistics. Professor Marian Kucała conducted a wide range of linguistic research, he had a great knowledge of how the Polish language functions in a diachronic and synchronous aspect, he enjoyed great recognition in the linguistic environment as a scientist and as a master, promoter, teacher who had a huge impact on the scientific development of many linguists in Poland, providing knowledge and promoting their scientific work.
