Opis:
The author analyses Copernicus’s ideas described in De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (1543) and the different view of the universe put forward by the excellent Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546–1601). Elias Olsen Morsing (1550–1590), a collaborator of Tycho Brahe, was sent to Frombork (Frauenburg) in 1584 to take the same measurements as Copernicus, but with his own, much better, instruments. The idea was to compare the new measurements with those taken by Copernicus. The expedition was a success. Morsing was able to detect certain errors in Copernicus’s measurements, and the scope of these errors. While in Frombork, Morsing received a primitive astronomical instrument and a portrait of Copernicus as gifts from canon Jan Hannovius. The author of this paper notes the Catholic Church’s scepticism about Copernicus’s theory of the universe, while acknowledging that both Copernicus and Brahe had deep faith in God and shared the belief that they owed their learning and achievement to God.

Opis:
The eminent French historian Fernand Barudel pointed out in his works about the Med that one would need for understanding of activites of an individual a wide context created by the social space and environment in which the main hero tends to live in. For Braudel became Philippe 2nd only a pretence to analyse the whole civilisation of the Med in his times. This context can be employed on the man of letters, a loner, spending the most of his life in his astronomical observatory – Nicolaus Copernicus. Unquestionably, the social environment of Thorn exerted the biggest influence on the formation of the young Copernicus. The city was located on the lower Vistula, on the boarder of the state of Teutonic Knights and Poland, with strong relationships with Silesia, Cracow and Hansa and over Hansa with Northern Europe. This location created extraordinary circumstances for the formation of the one of the biggest intellects of his times. This cultural mosaic was the native environment of Nicolaus Copernicus, a German-speaking Pole, on the maternal side a descendant of immigrants from Westphalia, on the paternal side of Silesian Copernicus-family with Slavic roots, from his birth to his death the faithful subject of the Polish kings.

Opis:
The article discusses various inspirations in the philosophy of Copernicus. According to the author of the text, scholastic views were of key importance in the reflections of the Polish astronomer. In addition, there are influences of the open Christian Aristotelism and also refrences to Platonism. Basically, the scholar belongs to the philosophy of the late Middle Ages as he referred to the thought of John Buridan, Wojciech Brudzewski and other Polish and Western scholastic authors. To sum up, the conducted research shows that in a general sense Nicolaus Copernicus may be classified as a well- educated scholastic master and medieval philosopher, an open thinker of the Late Middle Ages. More detailed study on various influences and inspirations adopted in his reflection results in the following approximate summary: Copernicus’ philosophy is medieval in its three quarters and Renaissanse in one quarter. Hence, three quarters are scholastic and traditional while one quarter is innovative. Innovation-novelty- was decisive for meaning and gradual success of the work of the Polish astronomer, however, it was tradition that enabled this novelty and paved the way to the new vision of the world. Physics of Copernicus is a modified Aristotelism and rules of the order and hierarchy are classified as Christian Platonism and Pythagoreism.

I reply to recent arguments by Peter Barker & Tofigh Heidarzadeh, Arun Bala, and F. Jamil Ragep claiming that certain aspects Copernicus’s astronomical models where influenced by late Islamic authors connected with the Maragha school. In particular, I argue that: the deleted passage in De revolutionibus that allegedly references unspecified previous authors on the Tusi couple actually refers to a simple harmonic motion, and not the Tusi couple; the arguments based on lettering and other conventions used in Copernicus’s figure for the Tusi couple have no evidentiary merit whatever; alleged indications that Nicole Oresme was aware of the Tusi couple are much more naturally explained on other grounds; plausibility considerations regarding the status of Arabic astronomy and norms regarding novelty claims weight against the influence thesis, not for it.

The UNESCO proclaimed the year 1973 as Copernicus Year. Polish immigrants in Denmark, who left the Polish People’s Republic between 1969–1973, with the encouragement of the Editor-in-chief of the newspaper „Chronicle” in Copenhagen, took the initiative to celebrate the great jubilee and arranged a symposium. The main paper, by Professor Leon Koczy (Glasgow), was about Copernicus and the excellent Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. Participants of the symposium also had the opportunity to listen to five other papers and to take part in a long discussion. The second day of the symposium was dedicated to Polish and international music – a mass was celebrated in memory of Polish scientists and artists who had perished or been killed, followed by a classical music concert performed by immigrant master-musicians. The jubilee celebration in Denmark was under the patronage of Edward Raczyński, Polish ambassador to the UK and one of the Polish political leaders in exile. For the new immigration this was the first great step in their new life, because the symposium was in support of WWII combatant emigration and the President of the Polish Republic in exile.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the history of transformation and re-arrangement of the first from the West chapel on the South side of the Gothic parish church of the Old Town in Toruń, at present the Toruń Cathedral of St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist. The former merchants’ chapel dedicated to St Nicholas over its history had changed its furnishing and patrocinium twice (St Michael the Archangel/ The Guardian Angels), which had been dictated by religious needs. In the 19th century it had also assumed the function of baptismal chapel and in 1973 – the Copernicus Jubilee Year – gained an entirely new arrangement to suit the memoria of the astronomer, who was born in this town. From than on it is universally referred to “The Copernicus Chapel”. The Authors analyse the historic grounds for that commemoration (the Copernicus memorabilia collected in that interior), the principles of its new arrangement with the use of Medieval elements of the church furnishing, the elements of historic and emotional narrative as well as the contemporary implications of that creation.

Information on the spatial distribution and variability of forests is important in monitoring of forest resources, biodiversity assessment, threat prevention, estimation of carbon content and forest management. The Pan−European High Resolution Layers (HRLs) produced as part of the European Earth Monitoring Programme – Copernicus provide detailed information on the land cover characteristics in Europe. The HRLs are produced using satellite imagery based on an interactive rule−based classification. There are the following HRL themes: imperviousness, forest, water and wetness and grasslands. The HRLs are available for the reference year 2012 and 2015, at the spatial resolution of 20 m. The forest related HRL consists of tree cover density, dominant tree type and forest type products. In this study, we performed a) the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the accuracy of the dominant leaf type (DLT) layer for the 2015 year at the national scale, and b) detailed analysis of the data quality at the forest stand level over the selected forest districts. The DLT layer was compared with the national orthophotos. The detailed analysis was carried out using Sentinel−2 images and forest inventory data obtained from the Forest Data Bank over the selected forest districts. The accuracy analysis of the national DLT layer revealed the high omission error equal to 18.8%, and lower commission error of 5.4%. The omission error is mostly related to the omitted orchards and young forest plantations, which are included in the DLT layer. The commission error of the broadleaved forest is related mostly to the small patches of coniferous forest that was misclassified as broadleaved. In general, commission errors were identified more frequently in broadleaved forest than in the coniferous forest. In many locations the patches of coniferous forest were misclassified as broadleaved forest. In general, the area of the broadleaved forest is overestimated.

Opis:
The article aims to describe the regional security challenges and major threats for India in South Asia. Since 1947, India has been suffering from external security threats such as a form of proxy warfare and terrorism from neighbouring countries. To this purpose, the article also examines recurring issues where India has major border issues with China in the Himalayan terrain to the eastern region. India has been facing bigger security threats from China and Pakistan in the South Asia region. This article looks at defence cooperation between India and France through the prism of India's serious security threats in the South Asian region. India's soft power policy reflected in a neo-realist approach and expanded its long-standing defence cooperation with France. Therefore, India has been receiving support from the French government whenever the country needs defence equipment and other assistance. The article uses case studies and discourse analysis methods to answer the questions and draw the main findings and conclusions of the study. Finally, as a result of the study, India's serious security threats in the South Asian region are pushing the country to purchase defence equipment from France. The relationship between India and France is strengthening bilateral cooperation at a broader level and shaping a strong strategic partnership by uniting in South Asia and the Indo-Pacific as well.

Opis:
Nigerian democracy is increasingly becoming a shadow of itself because of the historical violence associated with elections. Knowing that a peaceful transition through an election guaranteeing the total right to choose representatives is crucial to achieving a sustainable democracy, there is an increasing academic effort to look into the ways by which electoral violence can be curbed in Nigeria and Africa. The gubernatorial election conducted in Osun State in 2018 was marked with violence, which questioned the credibility of its outcome. Using a quantitative research method, the findings indicated that the use of political thugs, vote-buying and intimidation of voters had a negative impact on the credibility of the 2018 gubernatorial election. While the study concludes that electoral violence is a recurring factor in Nigerian elections, it recommends a policy framework focused on stern measures to punish perpetrators and improve voter education before and during elections.

The aim of the article is to present the views of the founder of offensive realism, John J. Mearsheimer, on the issue of Ukrainian security from the 1990s to 2022 and to indicate which of them were criticized by liberal researchers. The research problem is which assumptions of a realist and liberals have been empirically verified. The most important conclusion from the article is that Mearsheimer accurately diagnosed the issue of Ukrainian nuclear deterrence. At the same time, his theses regarding the causes of Russia's aggression in 2014 and 2022 are not relevant to the strategic situation. The opposite is true for liberal thinkers. The work is a comparative analysis. The methods used in the article are primarily content analysis and the tracing process.
