This study is an attempt to reassess the state of research on Joseph Conrad, his life and literary work. This research is strongly subjugated to only one line of anthropological discourse. It was developed around the cultural anthropology paradigm, and only in accordance with this discipline, thus determining not only basic notions of a narrative, but also the concept of cognition which is organising these narratives. It is not the aim of this paper to distinguish any components of Conrad’s philosophical worldview. Instead, the author would like to present Conrad’s work within the framework of, and using tools proffered by, philosophical anthropology, regardless whether they may be ignored by cultural anthropologists. The comparison of Conrad’s protagonists’ ethics (the author here analyses Victory, Chance, Nostromo and Duel) with the philosophical system of David Hume signifies, according to the author, a shifting emphasis in the perception of the role of auxiliary sciences in building knowledge about the world of values of Conrad’s novels and novellas. Not only has a cultural anthropologist working in the field of philosophy, using the classic quotations from Immanuel Kant, the potential to unlock this convoluted universe, but also a philosophical anthropologist is capable of comparison of fictional moral values attributed to the Conrad world with sophisticated texts such as less known Kants’s essay Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View. The final conclusion of these explorations is establishing the somewhat blurry attributes of the Scottish School of Common Sense which impacted Conrad’s work.

In this article I argue that the sphere of complex and difficult relations between men and women plays an important role in Conrad’s fiction, as it brings together all the existential, socio-philosophical and ethical dilemmas faced by the protagonists. Scholars who have discussed this subject include A. Gillon, E.B. Harrington, S. Jones, B. Meyer, A.M. Roberts, B. Soane and C. Watts. It would seem that there was a strong link between Conrad’s traumatic experiences as a child (when his parents were unable to provide him with the emotional warmth and security which he needed), his later unsuccessful relationships with various women and the way in which he portrayed relations between the sexes in his fiction. Conrad’s pessimistic outlook on life and the difficulties he had experienced in forming relationships with women would seem to have been reflected in the way in which he constructed the ‘represented world’ of his novels. Conrad’s characters are torn between attraction to the opposite sex and a feeling of alienation resulting from an inability to achieve mutual understanding. The words “irresistible and fateful impulse” – used by Conrad in the story Amy Foster – not only seem to be particularly applicable to relations between men and women in Conrad’s fiction, but would also seem to constitute a model according to which the author maps out the courses of their lives. The Conradian drama of relations between men and women is played out between two extremes or poles, as it were. In most cases we have an “irresistible and fateful impulse”. At other times the woman is idealized, while the man is left to play the equally unconvincing role of enthralled admirer. Either way, there is an awareness of the immense obstacles which hinder mutual understanding and which result from a sense of the tragic nature of human existence – and relations between men and women in particular.

Later degenerative symptoms suggest Osteoarthritis rather than the destructive inflammatory arthritis typically associated with gout.

The text is a discussion of the UMCS publicationPolskość i europejskość w Josepha Conrada wizjach historii, polityki i etyki[Polishness and Europeanism in Joseph Conrad's vision of history, politics and ethics] edited by Wieslaw Krajka. This is the second volume in the series Joseph Conrad a Polska, Europa Środkowo-Wschodnia i świat [Joseph Conrad and Poland, Central and Eastern Europe and the world], is part of the research activities carried out by the Conrad Research Department at the UMCS. The monograph, like its predecessor, is a selection of texts previously published in English in the 22 volumes of the series Conrad: Eastern and Western Perspectives. The review highlights the qualities of the publication, which presents works by leading Polish and foreign Conrad experts. In addition to popularizing the author, it also is an attempt to recover Conrad, who is almost absent in the Polish education.
Tekst jest omówieniem publikacji Wydawnictwa UMCS Polskość i europejskość w Josepha Conrada wizjach historii, polityki i etyki pod redakcją Wiesława Krajki. Jest to drugi tom serii Joseph Conrad a Polska, Europa Środkowo-Wschodnia i świat, stanowi część działań naukowych prowadzonych przez Zakład Badań Conradoznawczych UMCS. Monografia, podobnie jak poprzedniczka, jest wyborem tekstów opublikowanych wcześniej w języku angielskim w 22 tomach serii Conrad: Eastern and Western Perspectives. Recenzja zwraca uwagę na walory tego wydawnictwa, które zawiera badania czołowych polskich i zagranicznych conradystów. Prócz tego pełni funkcję popularyzatorską, jest swoistym odzyskiwaniem Conrada, autora niemal nieobecnego w polskiej edukacji.

The filmography of films based on the works of Joseph Conrad testifies that since the silent film era numerous filmmakers have turned to Conrad for source material. In most cases, the screen adaptations of his works were artistic and box-office failures. The release of Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now in 1979 sparked a revival of creative and commercial interest in Conrad as a source for films. Coppola’s picture, which has achieved the status of a modern classic, and Alfred Hitchcock’s famous adaptation of The Secret Agent (1936), seem to belie the prevailing opinion that Conrad’s works are impossible to adapt for the cinema successfully. This paper seeks to examine the ways in which Conrad’s works have been adapted and appropriated by two major film directors in the twentieth century.
Filmografia adaptacji dzieł Josepha Conrada świadczy o tym, że od czasów filmu niemego liczni filmowcy sięgali po utwory Conrada jako materiał na scenariusze filmowe. W większości przypadków okazało się, że ekranizacje utworów Conrada to porażki artystyczne i fiasko finansowe. Film Francisa Forda Coppoli Czas Apokalipsy (1979) zapoczątkował odrodzenie artystycznego i finansowego zainteresowania środowiska filmowców twórczością Conrada. Obraz Coppoli, który osiągnął status współczesnej klasyki filmowej, oraz słynna adaptacja powieści Tajny agent w reżyserii Alfreda Hitchcocka (1936), wydają się zaprzeczać powszechnej opinii, że ekranizacje dzieł Conrada z góry skazane są na niepowodzenie. Celem artykułu jest zbadanie metod i środków artystycznego wyrazu jakimi posługiwali się dwaj czołowi reżyserzy XX wieku w swoich adaptacjach utworów Conrada.

Nauczanie Josepha Conrada nie jest łatwym zadaniem, niemniej jednak niektórych trudności można uniknąć, starannie planując wykłady i zajęcia praktyczne. Obejmuje to zapoznanie studentów z głównymi faktami z życia Conrada i zaangażowanie ich w projekty grupowe. Znajomość trudnego dzieciństwa i wczesnej młodości Conrada w Polsce po klęsce powstania styczniowego pomaga studentom zrozumieć złożoną osobowość Conrada i jego wewnętrzne konflikty, które z kolei wpłynęły na jego literacką twórczość. Mając to na uwadze, studenci mogą odpowiednio interpretować conradowskie tematy, takie jak rozczarowanie, poczucie winy i izolacja z jednej strony oraz pokuta, (uniwersalna) solidarność i wiara w ludzkość z drugiej strony. Ponadto postrzeganie Conrada jako pisarza polskiego pochodzenia może być korzystne dla właściwej oceny jego stylu literackiego.

Although there would seem to be no apparent link between the English novelist Joseph Conrad and Marshal Józef Piłsudski, who restored the Polish State after World War I, they did in fact have much in common. Both hailed from the Polish eastern borderlands and both came from patriotic noble families. Both had been nurtured on the Polish Romantic poets – and Słowacki in particular. For both of them the failure of the 1863 January Uprising was a traumatic experience and both of them suffered exile in Russia. However, whereas Conrad did not believe that Poland would ever be able to regain her independence, Piłsudski led a successful armed struggle for the Polish cause, thus earning the writer’s unstinting admiration. Piłsudski for his part took pleasure in reading Conrad’s Lord Jim.

This article discusses Joseph Conrad’s links with Cracow, the historic capital of Poland and a major centre of Polish culture. Conrad fi rst came to Cracow in February 1869, accompanied by his father Apollo Korzeniowski, who - after several years of exile in northern Russia - had become gravely ill. Conrad visited the city a second time in the summer of 1914, having accepted an invitation from the young Polish politician Józef Hieronim Retinger, and (not without some diffi culty) eventually managed to get himself and his family safely back to Britain after the outbreak of World War I. Both of these sojourns in Cracow played an important role in Conrad’s life - and, one might say, in his creative work as a writer. One of the most vivid memories of his fi rst stay in Cracow was the hero’s funeral given to his father, who had been a victim of tsarist oppression. It was from Cracow that the young Conrad set out for France in order to take up a maritime career in Marseilles. During his second stay in Cracow (and Zakopane) Conrad made the acquaintance of many members of the Polish intellectual elite and took the decision to become actively involved in the cause of Polish independence.

Wit Tarnawski (1894-1988) was an eminent Conrad critic and translator. His research developed within three areas: the translation, interpretation and popularisation of Conrad’s works and biography. In the present essay we shall focus on the least researched part of Tarnawski’s work – his literary translations. In particular, we shall analyse his translation of The Sisters, which has been widely discussed in Polish literary and critical circles.

In an interview with Didier Eribon, Claude Lévi-Strauss admitted that he wished he had written Joseph Conrad’s books. It seems that once he even started writing a “Conradian” novel entitled Tristes Tropiques, but the only known fragment of this novel would seem to be the description of a sunset, which has become part of another book of the same title containing reminiscences from his journeys. In what way, then, did Conrad infl uence this unusual book by Lévi-Strauss? There are certainly similarities between the works of both writers. Apart from a similarity of literary form and cultural substance, we can fi nd a unique “optical experience” (Dariusz Czaja) in their descriptions of sunsets, which I interpret as a substructure of their studies of the world, culture and human knowledge.

Under the Stalinist regime which was foisted on Poland after the Second World War the printing of Conrad’s works was not allowed, partly because his books had been popular with members of the wartime Polish Resistance and partly because of their cultural impact. Communist officials condemned Conrad on both aesthetic and ideological grounds: Conrad’s individualistic ethic was incompatible with the collectivist tenets of communism, while the innovative nature of his prose exceeded the narrow framework of ‘socialist realism’. Things improved after the political “thaw” of 1956, which saw the publication of Lord Jim. After the next “thaw” of 1970 the chances for the publication of a Polish edition of Conrad’s collected works were greatly enhanced by the coming fiftieth anniversary of the author’s death. The initiator and editor of this new Polish edition of Conrad’s works – comprising 27 volumes – was Zdzisław Najder. Although the whole collection was published by the PIW publishing house between 1972 and 1974, some of Conrad’s political essays and other texts were removed by government censors because of their anti-Russian and anti-despotic import. However, Najder eventually found a way to publish them. In the autumn of 1974 he went to the United States to give a series of lectures on Conrad and asked Wit Tarnawski – a Polish émigré living in Britain – to help him. Before returning to Poland, Najder collected the letters which he and Tarnawski had sent to each other. This correspondence is now kept at the Jagiellonian University Joseph Conrad Research Centre. Tarnawski enrolled the support of Andrzej Stypułkowski, who was the director of the London-based Polonia Book Fund. Together with Andrzej Pomian, Tarnawski acted as an intermediary between the publishers and Najder in order to safeguard the latter’s anonymity. Stypułkowski had the idea of copying the graphic layout and artwork of the censored edition that had been published in Poland. The anonymous additional ‘counterfeit’ volume – entitled Political Essays – came out in the middle of 1975 and evoked a nervous response from the Polish secret police, who were unable to find any evidence to connect Najder with it. Copies of the ‘missing’ volume soon found their way to readers in Poland. It was only in 1996 that this 28th volume of Conrad’s collected works was published in Poland – by the very same PIW publishers – and this time with Zdzisław Najder as the editor.

Conrad Detrez is undoubtedly one of Belgium’s most important writers of the 70s of the 20th century. After having translated Brazilian revolutionary authors, he resumed the review of his provincial past, named «hallucinating autobiography». His first autofictional novel Ludo (1974) bring to life his first Belgian years in his native land where the inundation invades everything, the incessant rain causes floods and the river enters the houses. With excellent wit, Detrez’s scalpel-pen dissects characters and situations through which such topics as friendship, everyday marginal life and panic of people during the Second World War. Through selffiction, Detrez´s novel present the author and narrator’s obsessions.
Conrad Detrez est sans aucun doute l’un des écrivains les plus importants de Belgique des années 70 du XXème siècle. Après avoir traduit quelques auteurs révolutionnaires brésiliens, cet écrivain cosmopolite a repris la revue de son passé provincial, nommé « autobiographie hallucinante ». Son premier roman autofictionnel intitulé Ludo (1974) fait vivre ses premières années belges dans son pays natal où l’inondation envahit tout, la pluie incessante provoque des crues et la rivière pénètre dans les maisons. Doté d’un excellent esprit, Detrez décrit des personnages et des situations à travers lesquels sont abordés des sujets comme l’amitié, la vie quotidienne marginale ainsi que la panique des gens pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. À travers de l’autofiction, le roman detrezien présente les obsessions aussi bien de l’auteur que du narrateur.
