Opis:
It is well known that from the two fundamental thermodynamic parameters pressure p is much more efficient in transformation of the matter state than temperature T. Optical breakdown in a form of microexplosion proved to be a simple, cheap, and efficient source of transient extreme pressure and temperature. Our interest is focused on the breakdown performed with femstosecond laser pulses both on a surface and in the bulk of material. The paper delivers some examples of the transformation effects observed mostly in the transparent dielectrics under irradiation with femtosecond laser pulses.

Opis:
The Z Refurbishment Project was completed in September 2007. Prior to the shutdown of the Z facility in July 2006 to install the new hardware, it provided currents of ≤ 20 MA to produce energetic, intense X-ray sources ( ≈1.6 MJ, > 200 TW) for performing high energy density science experiments and to produce high magnetic fields and pressures for performing dynamic material property experiments. The refurbishment project doubled the stored energy within the existing tank structure and replaced older components with modern, conventional technology and systems that were designed to drive both short-pulse Z-pinch implosions and long-pulse dynamic material property experiments. The project goals were to increase the delivered current for additional performance capability, improve overall precision and pulse shape flexibility for better reproducibility and data quality, and provide the capacity to perform more shots. Experiments over the past year have been devoted to bringing the facility up to full operating capabilities and implementing a refurbished suite of diagnostics. In addition, we have enhanced our X-ray backlighting diagnostics through the addition of a two-frame capability to the Z-Beamlet system and the addition of a high power laser (Z-Petawatt). In this paper, we will summarize the changes made to the Z facility, highlight the new capabilities, and discuss the results of some of the early experiments.

Opis:
Majority-vote models on scale-free hypergraphs are investigated by means of numerical simulations with different variants of system dynamics. Hypergraphs are generalisations of ordinary graphs in which higher order of social organisation is included by introducing hyperedges corresponding to social groups, connecting more than two nodes. In the models under study, opinions of agents (two-state spins) placed in nodes are updated according to a probabilistic rule with control parameter representing social noise. The probability of a single spin flip depends on the average opinion within only one social group (hyperedge) the agent belongs to. This introduces an intermediate level of social interactions, in contrast with the case of networks, where the opinion of an agent usually depends on the average opinion of all neighbours. In all cases under consideration a second-order phase transition to a state with an uniform opinion was found as a function of the social noise, with the critical value of the control parameter and the critical exponents depending on the hypergraph topology and details of the system dynamics (node or hyperedge update).

Different types of lattice spin systems with competing interactions have rich and interesting phase diagrams. In this study we present some new results for such systems involving the Ising spin system (i.e. σ = ± 1) using a generalization of the Cayley tree-like lattice approximation. We study the phase diagrams for the Ising model on a Cayley tree-like lattice, a new lattice type called pentagonal chandelier, with competing nearest-neighbor interactions $J_1$, prolonged next-nearest-neighbor interactions $J_{p}$ and one-level next-nearest-neighbor senary interactions $J_{l_1}^{(6)}$. The colored phase diagrams contain some multicritical Lifshitz points that are at nonzero temperature and many modulated new phases. We also investigate the variation of the wave vector with temperature in the modulated phase and the Lyapunov exponent associated with the trajectory of the system.

A hybrid lattice-statistical model on doubly decorated planar lattices, which have localized Ising spins at their nodal lattice sites and two itinerant electrons at each pair of decorating sites, is exactly solved by the use of a generalized decoration-iteration transformation. Our main attention is focused on an influence of the on-site Coulomb repulsion on ground-state properties and critical behavior of the investigated system.

Opis:
Intermetallic compounds $AB_5$ type (A = rare-earth atoms, B = transition metal) are known to store reversibly large amounts of hydrogen and as that are discussed in this work. It was shown that the alloy cycling stability can be significantly improved by employing the so-called non-stoichiometric compounds $AB_5+x$ and that is why analysis of change of structure turned out to be interesting. A tendency for ordering of hydrogen atoms is one of the most intriguing problems for the unsaturated hydrides. The symmetry analysis method in the frame of the theory of space group and their representation gives opportunity to find all possible transformations of the parent structure. In this work symmetry analysis method was applied for $AB_5+x$ structure type (P6/mmm parent symmetry space group). There were investigated all possible ordering types and accompanying atom displacements in positions 1a, 2c, 3g (fully occupied in stoichiometric compounds $AB_5$), in positions 2e, 6l (where atom B could appear in non-stoichiometric compounds) and also 4h, 6m, 6k, 12n, 12o, which could be partly occupied by hydrogen as a result of hydrides. An analysis was carried out of all possible structures of lower symmetry, following from P6/mmm for we k=(0, 0, 0). Also the way of getting the structure described by the $P6_3mc$ space group with double cell along the z-axiswe k=(0, 0, 0.5), as it is suggested in the work of Latroche et al. is discussed by the symmetry analysis. The analysis was obtained by computer program MODY. The program calculates the so-called basis vectors of irreducible representations of a given symmetry group, which can be used for calculation of possible ordering modes.

An Ising model with competing interactions has recently been studied extensively because of the appearance of nontrivial magnetic orderings. In this paper, we study the phase diagrams for the Ising model on a Cayley tree with competing nearest-neighbor interactions J and ternary prolonged interactions $J_{t_{p}}$ on a Cayley tree of arbitrary order k and compare with the phase diagrams obtained in Uguz et al. and Vannimenus results for the Ising model on a Cayley tree with competing nearest-neighbor interactions J and ternary prolonged interactions $J_{p}$. For some values of k, we obtain phase diagrams of the model. We clarify the role of order k of the Cayley tree. We also plot the variation of the wave vector with temperature.

An ideal Bose-gas confined in a harmonic potential is studied. The thermodynamic properties of the said system are obtained in a general case of D dimensions, where D can be fractional (this corresponds to, e.g., porous medium). For the critical temperature, expansions with respect to the number of particles in the system are obtained. Numerical study is made for D = ln8/ln3 corresponding to the dimensionality of the so-called Sierpiński carpet.

Motivated by the properties of one-dimensional lattice systems with asymmetric on-site potential, one can formulate a hypothesis of an asymmetry driven phase transformation. Characteristic feature of one-dimensional systems exhibiting asymmetry driven phase transformation is a sequence of the two phase conversions. In particular class of such systems with a triple-well potential, phase conversions of one-dimensional systems would evolve into a sequence of two phase transitions in three-dimensional models. We propose here a model of three-dimensional system exhibiting a sequence of two first order asymmetry driven phase transitions.

Opis:
The role of anisotropic rotation for electron spin resonance lineshape and nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion profiles for paramagnetic molecules with electron spin quantum number S ≥ 1 is discussed. The ESR spectra and nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion profiles are calculated by means of an approach based on the stochastic Liouville equation and referred to in the literature as "Swedish slow motion theory". This description is valid for arbitrary motional conditions and interaction strengths. Molecular tumbling influences the ESR spectra by modulating zero field splitting interactions. The nuclear spin relaxation is affected by the rotational motion in a twofold way: via the electron spin dynamics and as a direct source of modulations of the electron-nuclear dipole-dipole interactions. For coinciding principal axes systems of the permanent (residual, static) zero field splitting and rotational tensors the ESR lineshape is not affected by rotational anisotropy. Rotational anisotropy is important for nuclear relaxation as it is influenced by molecular rotation not only via the electron spin dynamics, but also directly by modulations of the electron spin-nuclear spin dipole-dipole interaction (when the dipole-dipole and zero field splitting frames do not coincide). The anisotropy effects depend strongly on the relative orientation of the dipole-dipole and permanent zero field splitting axes. Nevertheless, a different scenario is also possible. When the diffusion axis coincides with the dipole-dipole axis (but not with the principal axis system of the permanent zero field splitting), the nuclear spin relaxation as well as the ESR lineshape, become sensitive to the rotational anisotropy. The possible dependence of the ESR lineshape and nuclear spin relaxation on the rotational anisotropy should be carefully considered when attempting a joint analysis of ESR and nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion results for paramagnetic molecules.

The melting of two-dimensional films formed on the (100) fcc crystal is studied by Monte Carlo simulation. The results obtained suggest that in systems with only weakly corrugated surface potential, exhibiting the hexagonal close packed solid structure, the melting transition is followed by the Ising-type transition as predicted by the theory of Nelson and Halperin. In the case of highly corrugated surface potential, the film forms registered structure which disorders gradually as the temperature is raised.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of non-interacting bosons in a one-dimensional ring-shaped lattice is studied by means of the kinetic Monte Carlo method. The system is approximated by the classical XY model (the kinetic term is neglected) and then the simulations are performed for the planar classical spins. We study the dynamics that follows a finite-time quench to zero temperature. If the quench is slow enough the system can equilibrate and finally reaches the ground state with uniform spin alignment. However, we show that if the quench is faster than the relaxation rate, the system can get locked in a current-carrying metastable state characterized by a nonzero winding number. We analyze how the zero-temperature state depends on the quench rate.

A popular method for network analysis of financial markets is a notable part of econophysics research. The networks created in such efforts are focused exclusively on linear correlations between stocks. While Pearson's correlation is the obvious starting point, it would be useful to look at its alternatives as to whether they provide improvements to this methodology, particularly given Pearson's correlation coefficient considers only a limited class of association patterns. We propose to use mutual information-based hierarchical networks, as mutual information is a natural generalisation of Pearson's correlation. We estimate mutual information using naive plug-in estimator as consistent bias is not harmful to this application, however other methods may also be used. We then transform the mutual information into an Euclidean metric and create minimal spanning trees and maximally filtered planar graphs. We apply this methodology to Warsaw Stock Exchange for years between 2000 and 2013, and comment on the differences with the standard methodology, as well as the structural changes on Warsaw Stock Exchange which the study reveals.

Thermal properties of glasses from the system $Ag_x(As_{40}S_{30}Se_{30})_{100-x}$ for x=0, 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 at.% were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The DSC curves were obtained under non-isothermal conditions which allowed determination of the glass transition temperature $T_{g}$ (onset temperature), crystallization temperature $T_{p}$ (corresponding to the crystallization peak maximum), melting temperature $T_{m}$, crystallization enthalpy $H_{c}$, and melting enthalpy $H_{m}$. The DSC curves obtained at the same heating rate were analyzed in order to study the variation of glass transition temperature with Ag concentration. Observed $T_{g}$ shift toward higher values, with increase in the heating rate, is in agreement with the Lasocka equation. Samples with 3 at.% and 5 at.% Ag were further thermally treated at different heating rates with the aim of analyzing kinetic processes of crystallization. The Moynihan and Kissinger models were used to calculate the activation energy of glass transition and activation energy of crystallization. For the samples that showed the crystallization processes an assessment of the thermal stability was done based on different criteria.

We review some recent results obtained for the dynamics of a single hole and for the ground states at finite hole doping in t-J model. Next, we address the role of orbital degeneracy in doped Mott-Hubbard insulators and show examples of effective strong coupling models which include the orbital degrees of freedom. These new t-J models have interesting phase diagrams, with the new magnetic phases stabilized by a competition between magnetic energy and excitonic excitations. It is argued that the doped holes always bind to the excitons and that the new phases identified on the mean-field level give rise to local distortions of the lattice. We conclude that realistic t-J models derived from the electronic structure of particular compounds may be successfully applied for understanding both the observed magnetic ground states, and the results of photoemission experiments, as we have demonstrated recently for NiO.
