Opis:
the first seed orchards of lime trees Tilia cordata Mill. were established in Poland in the Susz Forest district in 1985. Currently, there are 21 seed orchards of this species in the country in order to satisfy the seed demand and preserve the species as well as genetic diversity. due to disease symptoms occurring on Tilia trees and irregular fruiting, an attempt was made to collect information on the problems of seed orchards and their characteristics in Poland. In order to achieve this goal, the average annual seed yield and the total amount of seeds collected in plantations located in Poland were analyzed and compared. each of the selected plantations currently has several dozen different Tilia clones, which mainly serve to preserve the genetic diversity. these orchards are producing seeds from which new tree seedlings are grown and therefore increases in yield are desired. In this study, we analysed orchard location and their seed yield based on the information provided by Forest districts and the National Seed register, in which foresters record data on the collection of seeds as well as breeding difficulties resulting from unsuitable soil types. we were able to determine that the seed yield is primarily influenced by the age of the trees. In addition, trees are exposed to changing weather conditions each year, which may not always be conducive to seed formation. Furthermore, it is during seed collection that disease symptoms or nutritional deficiencies of trees are noticed and recorded, which may not occur every year due to variability in seed formation and demand. In addition, trees are exposed to changing weather conditions each year, which may not be conducive to seed formation.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the susceptibility of small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.) seeds to drying and freezing in liquid nitrogen (-196°C). Seed samples were frozen in liquid nitrogen for 24 h at 11 different levels of seed moisture content (m.c.), ranging from 3.1% to 22.8% (fresh weight basis). All samples, including unfrozen control samples, were subjected to scarification with concentrated sulphuric acid (Tylkowski 1998) either before or after freezing. Seed pre-treatment before germination (at 3~15°C/16~8h) involved cold stratification at 3°C without substrate. Seed drying to 3.1% m.c. significantly reduced their germinability (to 63%), as compared to the high germinability (82-88%) of seeds with 5.2-20.9% m.c. Thus seeds of this species can be assigned to the ‘suborthodox' category. Such a high germinability (79-87%) was preserved after freezing in liquid nitrogen in samples dried to 9.0-17.4% m.c. if scarification was performed before freezing, and in samples dried to 9.1-16.2% m.c. if scarification was performed after freezing. The highest percentage of seedlings emerged after freezing in liquid nitrogen from seeds dried to 11.1-20.1% m.c. (emergence 65-75%) if scarification was performed before freezing, and from seeds dried to 7.3-17.8% m.c. (emergence 53%-71%) if scarification was performed after freezing.

Critical transport velocity, thickness, width, length, angle of sliding friction and weight of small−leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.) seeds from five batches, harvested in four neighboring seed regions in Poland, were determined. The values of shape factor, cross−sectional area, volume and density were calculated for each seed. The results were compared using standard statistical methods (simple ANOVA, correlation, single−variable and multivariate regression analysis). The highest correlation was observed between weight of seeds and their thickness and width. Majority of regression equations developed in the study was characterized by a relatively high percentage of explained variation, taking into account the type of experimental material.

Opis:
In 1970-2000, the state of the natural environment in many regions of Poland was unsatisfactory. This situation has been improving since the integration with the European Union, mainly owing to the reduction of emissions of sulphur and nitrogen oxides. The present study included three tree species: rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L. em. Hedl.), small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.), and aspen (Populus tremula L.). The trees grew in a pollution free environment (Huszlew) and in an urban agglomeration (Lublin). The aim of this research was to make comparative observations of the structure of leaves in relation to the content of lead, zinc, copper, nitrogen and sulphur determined in these organs. The N/S ratio in the leaves was accepted as an indicator of proper metabolic processes. Observations of leaves were made with using light microscopy and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. The content of heavy metals in leaves was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) after dry mineralization. Total sulphur was determined by the turbidimetric method, while nitrogen by the Kjeldahl method after mineralization in sulphuric acid. When influenced by polluted air, the epidermis of the examined leaves was composed of smaller cells with higher stomatal density per unit area and had a lower number of open pores compared to the epidermis of the leaves developed in a clean environment. Among the species investigated, aspen was characterized by the highest ability to bioaccumulate heavy metals in its leaves. Among the elements determined only the Zn content exceeded the permissible limit, whereas Pb and Cu were found to occur in the range of values considered to be optimal. The dominant share of lead in suspended dust caused changes in the epidermis of leaves, which led to disorders in plant water relations.

Opis:
The study concerns the ecological responses of Tilia cordata Mill. to pollution and describes the advantages of estimating of the degree of environmental pollution. The aim was, to find out whether the degree of pollution conforms to the contents of the investigated elements in leaves, the assessment of variability of morphometric leaf traits and the cationic equilibrium values. The study has shown a statistically significant differentiation between the analysed sites in respect of dust fall, concentrations of elements in soils and leaves, morphometric traits of leaves and the cationic equilibrium. The hierarchical tree plot of cluster analysis qualified the sites as polluted and non-polluted. In polluted sites the contents of metals in leaves were significantly higher and the cationic equilibrium in leaves was disturbed. The surface, width and asymmetry of leaves, and also the variability of these measures were higher in polluted sites. In sites, which are not directly affected by pollution the cationic equilibrium is close to the const. value, whereas leaf traits have shown the lowest values and a considerably lower variability. The investigations show that leaf traits and cationic equilibrium correspond to the level of pollution and can be used as a tool for evaluation of the environment status.

Opis:
Trees are an important component of the urban landscape. Their aesthetics qualities and especially a positive impact on the environment translate into increased life quality of urban communities. From this point of view the aspect of trees’ growth in urban areas is an object of intensive research all over the world. The better the knowledge of factors and mechanisms affecting growth and development trees in urban areas, the more accurate is in example monetary evaluation of trees value and their effects on the environment (value of the retained stormwater, produced oxygen, assimilated CO2, retained pollutions of water, soil and air, reduction of heat islands, etc.). Research on the correlation of tree age, environmental factors and the growth of dendrometric parameters serve as a starting point for developing various computer programs enabling one to calculate the economic effect of trees on savings and expenditure of individual households, towns and cities. Results of tree growth research prove that savings resulting from the presence of trees in towns can be more than three times the cost of tree maintenance. Trees growth is with no doubt dependent on their age. This paper evaluates the possibility of determining tree age based simultaneously on dbh (diameter at breast height 1,3 m) and total tree height, using species most commonly growing along streets in Warsaw: common lime (Tilia cordata Mill.), common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) and horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.). The first step of research was the identification and measuring of age homogenous trees populations growing in similar conditions (street side trees in Warsaw, excluding city’s downtown) for which planting ages were known (mainly from archive data). Next, multifactoral regression models were developed describing the growth of both parameters (dbh and height) over time. In the majority of cases, plotting tree age against diameter and height yielded a regression coefficient r value and determination coefficient r2 value above 0.9. For graphical interpretation of elaborated multifactoral model nomograms were applied. This kind of graph explains tree age based on both dbh and height of trees. Another aspect of the research was a verification. The resulting model was applied to unrelated groups of trees of known age. Mean bias values were established for each model. The difference between the actual age and mean age calculated with the model was less than ±15%. Presented model, although not meant for application to individual trees might be useful to determine the age of trees populations growing along streets and roads.
