- The purpose of the article is to bring the reader closer to the history and losses of historical cemeteries in the Bieszczady Mts., which in the southeastern part of this region frequently constitute the only material trace of the culture of the Bojko and Łemko people. Once the local villages grew depopulated as a result of postwar resettlement campaigns, the cemeteries became doomed to oblivion. Out of a total of more than fifty pre-1918 cemeteries only twenty have survived and 22 are no longer extant; there are traces of 12 objects. Over sixty nineteenth- and twentieth-century gravestones have survived. The process of their destruction, albeit slow, progresses steadily. The most interesting examples are to be found in Berehy Górne, Beniowa, Wołosate and Dźwiniacz Górny. The stone pedestals, crowned with stone or cast iron cross, feature epitaphs and diverse religious symbols. The cemeteries are invariably associated with plants (linden, maple, ash, larch, spruce, periwinkle, bluebottle and buphthalmum speciosa), producing a unique historicalnatural phenomenon which deserves to conserved.
