Discussion of the knowledge that is created through human cognitive efforts in different periods of history proceeds has a varying intensity. In the second half of the twentieth century, when it was announced that mankind had entered the age of knowledge society, reflection on its condition requires special attention. In order to meet this challenge, the article seeks to answer two basic questions: a) What knowledge currently enjoys the greatest social recognition? b) What are the parameters of such knowledge that put it in a dominant position among other forms? When attempting to answer these questions, the author does not try to idealize the intellectual product considered to be the most valuable, but also points to its weaker sides, confronting the facts with the expectations placed upon it.

This review article discusses the book Understanding How Science Explains the World by Kevin McCain, published by Cambridge University Press (2022). With an impressive combination of clarity and depth, McCain provides the reader with a firm grasp of how science works, of what science aims to achieve, and of what makes science a successful epistemic enterprise. The review article reconstructs the book’s overall dialectic and identifies one potential point of tension which concerns the role of truth or accuracy in scientific knowledge.

Opis:
The article studies the problem of biographical narrative in the novel «Measuring the World» by Austrian writer Daniel Kelman. The purpose of the research is to consider genre features of the work, to determine its literary structure, the narrative system in the context of postmodernist Austrian prose, and, in particular, the «magic realism» in Latin American literature; to illustrate how the ironic reinterpretation of traditional forms and postmodern play with mass literature cliches, the combination of an exciting plot and deep philosophical problems allow the writer to carry out the process of decoding, on account of the fact that each reader interprets the text in their own way, subject to their knowledge and worldview. Portraying the fate of two German science geniuses of the 19th century, the prominent mathematician Karl Friedrich Gauss and the outstanding naturalist Alexander Humboldt, the Austrian writer depicts two different world views: the theoretical, presented by Gauss, and the practical, introduced by Humboldt. Two different personalities, two different characters are associated with the metaphor «Measuring the world.» It is argued that the combination of two plot lines is something more than just a compositional technique that refers to the peculiar biocentrism on which the entire narrative is based. To achieve the research aim, the following methods are used: biographical, culture-historical, contextual, comparative typological, structural and functional, psychoanalytic. Based upon the analysis, the following results are obtained: it is concluded that the novel «Measuring the world» is one of the most successful German-language novels of recent decades, a striking example of an effective combination of the Austrian literary and artistic tradition with the achievements of the Latin American novel. Subsequently, we have a complex intertexture with ambiguous imagery relative to the contemporary patterns in Austrian prose with regard to the renovation of literary language and the transformation of genre forms.

The main goal of the following article is to motivate Polish research units to take journalists into consideration in their external activities - journalists are one of the key groups of recipients guaranteeing prestige and reaching various addressees. The author of this article thinks that one of the basic ways of helping to achieve this goal is to take advantage of the website of an institution and publish there contents addressed to the media (beginning with contact data for journalists). The author would like to encourage representatives of research and scientific organizations to analyse the websites of their institutions and search there for information enabling journalists to establish contact with a particular institution. A starting point for the presentation of this subject are the author's own analyses, which were supposed to check how many Polish scientific units take into consideration in their actions contacts with the media and address the needs of journalists. For this purpose it was investigated whether the websites of scientific institutions have sections dedicated to the media and whether they provide contact information for journalists, whether they post press announcements or other materials useful for the representatives of the media, as well as whether they present scientific workers as experts in their areas of works.

The main field of interest is the sensational character of texts with scientific subject matter. This is a characteristic trait of potentially every field of social life and almost every type of discourse, but in popular science texts and texts popularizing scientificknowledge it is presented in a more balanced way. On the basis of many examples of texts presented in online information portals the author shows how variously journalists value scientific discoveries and how this opinion depends on the evaluation of the scientific circles. In conclusion, it might be stated that the sensational character, so inseparably connected with tabloids, differs from the sensational character of popular science texts and texts popularizing scientific knowledge.

Though the issue of knowledge management is a hot subject of interest in nowadays market companies, integrated solutions fit to the specific needs of research institutes still require more attention. This paper documents a part of the research activities performed at National Institute of Telecommunications, related to development of research institute knowledge management support system. The ideas lying in the background of the system come from the recent theories of knowledge creation and creativity support and from experience with everyday practice of knowledge management in market companies. Main focus is put here on the issue of creation of a research topics ontology that is meant to be a semantic backbone of the system. Three-stage approach is proposed, aiming at the construction of ontologies for different levels of organizational hierarchy, from individual researcher, through group or unit, up to the whole institute. Created ontologies are linked to knowledge resources and support diverse activities performed at those levels.

The predictions of science fiction play an important part in the cultural landscape of contemporary western culture, being integral to the popular culture (novels, movies, TV series, graphic novels). Science fiction narratives predict the future of society, technology, culture but also – the science itself and a university as a scientific institution. The aim of this work is to shed light on the depiction of the future of science, knowledge, and university in the science fiction works, predicting the ineluctable societal collapse. The essay focuses on the use of the scientific discourse and scientific knowledge in the chosen science fiction narratives by Stanisław Lem, Walter M. Miller jr., John Brunner, and Paolo Bacigalupi.

A successful application of scientific research in science education requires adequate professional training of teachers. The study presents the results of research focused on the level of scientific inquiry skills of future biology teachers. The results showed that students with a success rate of over 80 % solved tasks focused on applying numerical methods, determining relationships between variables and evaluating the uses and misuses of scientific information with a more than 80 % success rate. On the other side, the students had considerable problems associated with planning and implementing of the experiment. The results indicated that there is no significant difference in the level of scientific inquiry skills between students who study biology teaching in combination with other science subject, and students who study biology teaching in combination with a non-science subject.
Skuteczne zastosowanie badań naukowych w edukacji naukowej wymaga odpowiedniego przeszkolenia zawodowego nauczycieli.

This paper discusses the concept of Technology Assessment (TA) and its rationale in light of complex relations between technology, market and democracy. The author points out their limitations: market proliferates discoveries and inventions but distorts mechanism of cultural limitations of the process of scientific innovation; democracy is in deep accord with scientific meritocracy, individualism and creativity, but on the other hand it slowly loses its control grip over science; technology is predominantly responsible for positive public representation of science, but it is guilty of most terrifying and problematic inventions. In conclusion, the author argues that only taking into account the complex hybrid of science, technology, market and democracy may provide understanding and control over technological innovations.

Opis:
At the end of the 20th century, the theory of art history shifted from the area of methodology understood as a normative field of the philosophy of science to the area of the social practice of constructing knowledge. The term “art historical methodology” itself became trivialized when its meaning was detached from the horizon of epistemology and became extremely inclusive, encompassing all methods practised in the discipline, with a method being considered to be the use of any theory as a tool of interpretation. As a consequence, the basic problem of scientific methodology, which is the critical assessment of explanatory and interpretive theories due to the value of their justification, is not addressed in the self-reflection of contemporary art history. The retreat from the rigors of methodology was related to the reception of structuralism, initiated by Ernst Gombrich in the book Art and Illusion. Popper’s model of situational logic as a method of historical explanation of works of art was transformed into a structuralist model, referring to constant rules of pictorial representation, symbolization and communication. Michael Fried and Norman Bryson formulated their own theories of invariant rules defining the necessary initial conditions for the formation and reception of pictures, so that individual works could be interpreted in terms of these rules and, as a result, confirm the general theory, which created a vicious circle. Structuralist theories did not function as hypotheses requiring critical testing, but as interpretive codes that served to read each work of art within their own conceptual system. The next step in the process of the reception of structuralism was the development of theories defining general rules that would govern the discursive practice of art history, and the detection of which at the basis of this practice would discredit or invalidate its epistemological dimension. Hayden White’s narrativism was the theory that historical discourse is subject to narrative conventions, not to the laws of logic and the rigors of methodology that serve to limit the pool of alternative explanations or interpretations. This theory was intended to justify the pluralism of equal versions of history as a politically correct idea, appropriate for a “democratic” model of knowledge. Theorists developing White’s theses in the field of art history claimed that the discursive practice of this discipline was not governed by methodological rules but by political motivations (Keith Moxey) or aesthetic principles of artwriting (David Carrier). After the phase of open denial of the dependence of the art history discourse on methodology, the theory of the discipline turned into an analysis of techniques for building this discourse, which no longer included methodological issues, as in James Elkins’ book Our Beautiful, Dry, and Distant Texts. A critical review of theories separating art history from methodology leads to the conclusion that they are untenable. It is impossible to maintain the scientific status of our discipline without respecting the principles of methodology founded in the contemporary philosophy of science.
