Opis:
The origin of maritime research lies in a multi‐disciplinary approach. The philosophical grounding for academic research inherently shapes the methodological approach, data collection methods adopted, and analysis techniques deployed. Thus, there is a need for an insight into the philosophical underpinnings of maritime research for better understanding of research design in maritime context. The paper will examine social science and its grounding in philosophical concepts for qualitative research, and the relevance of philosophical approach to ‘values’ in social science, to maritime research by using qualitative methods. The aim is to apprise the novice maritime researchers ‐ in simplistic language, about the philosophical approach to values, as an alternative to complex descriptions of concepts available in philosophical articles and references.

Opis:
The Symbiosity of Creation (2012 – ca. 2034) by Jarosław Czarnecki (aka Elvin Flamingo) is an interdisciplinary art and research project which consists of six mobile incubators, whose interiors recreate the natural habitat of three species of ants. The project consists of three part-stories: “The Reconstruction of Non-human Culture”, “The Kingdom of the Shared Quotidian”, and “After Humans. The Biocorporation”, plus the recordings of failed attempts to create the colony collected in the form of “Subterranean Struggle”. As a result of the materials used (in vivo organism) Czarnecki’s work may seem to be a typical bio-art piece. In my text I would like to point out one very important, yet so far overlooked, critical aspect of the project and show Czarnecki’s artistic activities in the light of the theory of paraartistic values contained in the book Reality aesthetics by Maria Gołaszewska.

The Michael Heller’s article entitled “How is philosophy in science possible?” was originally published in Polish in 1986 (see Heller, 1986) and then translated into English by Bartosz Brożek and Aeddan Shaw and published in 2011 in the collection of essays entitled Philosophy in Science. Methods and Applications (Heller, 2011). This seminal paper has founded further growth of the ‘philosophy in science’ and become the reference point in the methodological discussions, especially in Poland. On the 40th anniversary of Philosophical Problems in Science we wanted to make this paper freely available to the international public by reprinting its English version. In this issue it is followed by two additional articles-commentaries (by Paweł Polak and Kamil Trombik).

This ethnographic research attempts to find relevance of Grundtvigian educational philosophy in promoting lifelong learning opportunities and the institutionalisation of community education for adults in rural India. The researcher analyses thoroughly the concept of Grundtvig’s social and educational anthropology in Indian context, which comprises pedagogical strategies and people’s enlightenment through education and social development. The research utilises relevant literature, case-study and educational model in order to analyse the contemporaneity, relevance and creative adaptation and assimilation of Grundtvigian philosophy in Indian adult education. The research argues that if the Grundtvigian alternative education and social concept could be creatively adopted and assimilated in the adult education system in rural India, the core of learning ecology in the Grundtvigian concept would be able to bring significant improvement to the traditionally rigid adult education system and support learners in exposing their inherited potential to a greater extent.

Nowadays, computers are in common use, both in experimental and theoretical research. It is worth considering if the implementation of a new, universal research tool has significantly changed the science of the end of 20th century. The crucial question which I will try to answer is if computers have revolutionized the scientific research. In order to find the answer, I will describe modern digitally aided science, taking into consideration the research conducted in the greatest elementary physics laboratory. Subsequently, I will refer to the classic concept of scientific revolution proposed by Thomas S. Kuhn. Finally, I will answer the question related to digital revolution in science.

This paper presents Michael Heller’s notion of “philosophy in science” and re-introduces Michael Heller’s classical text that first presented this concept of philosophy entitled How is “philosophy in science” possible?. The paper discusses the historical context of Heller’s idea as it emerged from the discussions and works of the Krakow philosophical scene and discusses the basic tenants of this philosophy, its analytic character, the role of intellectual tradition in the development of this philosophy, and the critical role played by an interdisciplinary dialogue between philosophy, science, and theology. Despite the idea of philosophy in science having emerged about 40 years ago, this concept still inspires and fuels innovative research. The notion of “philosophy in science” lies at the foundations of the philosophy published in two journals: Philosophical Problems in Science (Zagadnienia Filozoficzne w Nauce) and Philosophy in Science.

The paper is a critical analysis of fundamental assumptions for the empirical research methodology in the jurisprudence field. It is aimed to compare the profile of empirical methodology with jurisprudence-dominant analytic philosophy. This is archived through a) examining the basic profile of the positivist attitude of a researcher along with assumptions integrating empiricism, which derives from the positivist methodology, into different philosophies of the law which specifically appeal to the naturalism of the legal phenomenon; next b) detailing characteristic features of empirical methods which take jurisprudence specifics into account; and finally c) coming to a set of conclusions concerning the success of research conducted this way in the jurisprudence field.

The main aim of my article is indicating the unsolved research problems connected to causation in the area of the philosophy of economics. First, I briefly define causation and discuss two most notable approaches, i.e. the realist theory of causation and the instrumentalist theory of causation. Second, I review the most recent researches focused on the problem of causation in economics. Third, I discuss a number of case studies. On the grounds of comparison of the research practice of economists and the current issues undertaken by the philosophers of economics, I conclude that there is a gap between the research practice and the normative methodological analyses and indicate the research questions that need to be answered.

The aim of this article is to examine whether the “seven myths” identified and presented by Uroboros in “In venenoso Dracone …,” more than thirty years ago still function in the academic community. It also aims to address whether there are indications that this state has undergone a change. It seems that naturalists found that excessive adherence to a physicalist style of doing science severely limits research work. At the same time, scientists often grapple with the consequences of implementing physicalism and stumble while addressing philosophical issues.

Opis:
The text is a reflection on modern universities based on the thought of Thomas Aquinas, Nicolai Hartmann, Karl Jaspers and Michał Heller. The main claim is that the purpose of scientific research is truth, which, however, can never be achieved in an absolute way due to cognitive limitations. The ethical aspect of practicing science is also underlined. Some aspects of the institutional functioning of universities are also discussed, as well as the more important characteristics that should characterise the scholar. The posture of openness of mind and responsibility for science and the academic community is postulated. The first part of the text addresses the issue of the identity of the university and the research community. Attention was also paid to the most important characteristics of the scientist: reason and morality, which should take precedence over will and institutionalisation. The second part of the text raises the problem of truth and the possibility of its achieving. The arguments point to the impossibility of obtaining unambiguously objective and absolute knowledge. However, this does not mean scep-ticism, because scientific progress allows a better understanding of reality and leads to a reduction in the area of irrationality. In the third part of the text, ‘commandments of the man of Academy’, are given, which boil down to responsibility, conscientiousness, cooperation and openness to criticism in their principles. At the end, the author puts the thesis, that university should be a place to build a community of people devoted to truth and science. All activities within it should be an implementation of an idea of the university, reaching back to the medieval roots of the Academy.

The aim of this paper is to examine a complex pattern of mutual interdependence between Unified Growth Theory (subroutine) and the evolution of the entire field of economic growth theories (main routine) from a philosophical and methodological perspective. The analysis utilises the recently introduced concept of research routine (and respectively, subroutine) aimed at an explanation of the evolution of scientific research. The study identifies the inuflence of the subroutine (and its specific concept of demographic transition) on the core concepts of the main routine: human capital, population growth and learning. The results are based on network analyses of extensive bibliometric evidence from Scopus and the Web of Knowledge.

It is no secret that the methodology within psychiatric research has been challenged to the point of a possible paradigm shift. After decades of failed attempts to determine biological markers for the mental illnesses classified by the Diagnostic Statistical Manual, we are witnessing a radical transformation of the way we think about mental illness. While research seems to be on the right track by migrating from a discrete categorical approach to a dimensional matrix of the neurobiological conditions responsible for cognition, there are concerns that the neurosciences involved in the development of this dimensional framework will be unable to arrive at a diagnostic system appropriate for clinicians. Consequently, it has been suggested that researchers and clinicians should develop distinct ontologies. I argue that such an approach will not do justice to the complexity of mental illness and offer insight into the applicability of a phenomenological approach in psychiatric research.
