The private Polish elementary school in Lupeni was founded in 1929 based on the Romanian Private Learning Act of 1925 permitting the organisation of minority schools. It was created in a magyarised and romanised environment and dealt with the education of Polish miners’ children. Wilhelm Zöller became the organiser and the first teacher of the school on behalf of the Polish School Motherland in Romania. After two years of operation, the school came under the patronage of the Polish School Association in Romania. Under his tutelage in the 1936/1937 school year, the school became public and its rank in the local community increased. It was also active during the World War II. With the consent of the Romanian Minister of Education, in 1946 it became a Polish public school consisting of 7 classes. It was supported by the “Polish House in Romania” Association. This school was the only Polish school in Transylvania that existed the longest in this part of Romania. When the Polish miners and teachers left Poland in 1948, the school was liquidated.

The article tells us about the importance of reading in the process of child’s development. Today, when children interact with mass media they do not develop their thinking and concentration skills and they also become aggressive and violent. A book can teach children how to concentrate and focus, can make them feel kindness and beauty. The second part of the article tells us how to draw the attention of children to reading. Described methods are used by teachers who try to encourage Russian speaking children to read Polish literature.

The article is analysing dramas from school theatres written between the 16th and the 18th century, containing the infanticide motive. It is seen that infanticide varies in different plays. In no case was it a main theme of dramas. Infanticide was an important component of the plot in martyrological plays. These dramas showed the heroism of martyrs and concentrated on the details of the felony. At the same time, in other plays, manslaughter of the child constitutes a subplot. Very often, the motive for killing children was the anxiety about loss of power. In many dramas, justification for committing such a crime was more important than the crime itself. Manslaughter of children probably was not portrayed directly on stage, according to the rules included in „Ratio Studiorum”. It is possible that it was portrayed with the help of allegorical images or with the magic lantern.

W dzieje wielu narodów i państw wpisana jest również historia emigracji, w której to obywatele, będący poza granicami swojego kraju, kultywują tożsamość narodową, język, obyczaje i religię. Do tych narodów należą również Polacy, którzy także we Włoszech dbali o przywiązanie do polskości i do wiary katolickiej. „Wiara i polskość”, to dwa komponenty, które w wymiarze ideowym i praktycznym towarzyszyły polskiej emigracji. Artykuł przybliża postać nieznaną – Teodora Feliksa Domaradzkiego – twórcę i pierwszego dyrektora szkoły w Rzymie oraz jego współpracę z Matką Teresą Kalkstein, przełożoną generalną Zgromadzenia Sióstr Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego, która zaowocowała służbą polskim emigrantom w podjęciu edukacji szkolnej w języku polskim.
History of emigration is inscribed in the history of many nations and countries; in this history it is just the citizens who are outside their countries that cultivate their national identity, the language, customs and religion. These nations also include Poles, who also in Italy took care of the attachment to their Polish identity and to the Catholic faith. „The faith and Polishness” are the two components that in the ideological and practical dimension accompanied Polish emigrants. The article shows an unknown person – Teodor Feliks Domaradzki – who was the founder and the first headmaster of the Rome school, and his cooperation with Mother Teresa Kalkstein, the Superior General of the Sisters of the Resurrection, whose result was the service to Polish emigrants in starting their school education in the Polish language.

The aim of the article is to present how the immediate surroundings can help children acquire language. It presents the case study of a 12-year-old Chinese girl who, as a consequence of parents’ decision, has lived with a Polish family and has a chance to be totally immersed in Polish. The article shows the dynamic acquisition process, including also a cultural adaptation aspect. It shows that not only school teaching can have a good influence on children’s language development.

The history of bilingual education in Poland has its beginning in 1991, when first the French language, and later German, English and Spanish were introduced at schools at secondary level. Geography is one of the most popular subjects taught in bilingual system. In Polish schools we can observe different approaches towards bilingual education at secondary level. They are usually connected with several criteria, according to which schools in Poland organize bilingual classes. One of the most common criteria of organizing this kind of teaching is the syllabus (Polish or international) and the proportion of native and foreign languages used during lessons (usually given in percentages). Bilingual education nowadays is without doubt one of the attempts to adjust curricula to contemporary educational standards existing in Europe. A justification for encouraging bilingual approach in teaching is connected with the European Union directive, according to which all secondary school graduates should speak two foreign languages fluently. Such an idea of contemporary bilingual education is formulated in CLIL Programme (Content and Language Integrated Learning), which promotes full integration of the geography content and language learning. This is based on an assumption that during bilingual geography lessons one of the teaching goals is to practice and develop language skills, which geography teachers seem to forget. This article is an attempt to classify Polish bilingual geography education models and indicate their weaknesses and strengths.

Poles settled in present-day Romania in the fourteenth century. A subsequent influx of Polish settlers followed the fall of the Kościuszko Uprising. The aim of this study is to present the history of education in the Polish minority in Romania. The work focuses on showing various forms of educational and upbringing institutions from the early 19th century to 1939. In the analyzed period, the Poles organized mainly kindergartens and comprehensive primary and secondary schools in Bukowina (now northern Romania). They also made attempts at introducing the Polish language to teachers’ training institutions i.e. teachers’ training colleges for men and women. They established their own socio-educational societies and built Polish Houses in which they pursued a wide range of educational and cultural activities. In the Kingdom of Romania, Polish children could also attend (under certain conditions) Polish language classes in Romanian state schools. Owing to the Polish Schools in Romania, followed by the Polish School Association in Romania, Polish private education assumed various forms.

The article begins by introducing the beginnings of schooling in the Teschen Silesia region. It thencontinues to map the situation after the introduction of compulsory education. The development of schools and the network of schooling institutions are covered, as well as school curricula and the position and competence of teachers in the 17th to 19th centuries. Physical didactic aids of this period are examined, especially textbooks. Finally, the article deals with the issues connected with Germanisation and the national struggle nd awareness of the Polish population in the eschen Silesia region; with the impact of Hasner’s law (Leopold Hasner von Artha) on the development of he national school system in the region; with important figures and organisations that played a ignificant role in the political, cultural and economic changes in society in Teschen Silesia.

Artykuł jest poświęcony filmowi Garby Marka Serafińskiego z serii 14 bajek z królestwa Lailonii Leszka Kołakowskiego wyprodukowanej w TvSFA w Poznaniu w latach 90. Rozważania nad animowaną adaptacją bajki filozoficznej przywołują kontekst rewizjonistycznej myśli Leszka Kołakowskiego z lat 50. i 60. odnajdywanej w tekstach z tamtego okresu, zwłaszcza w pobocznym nurcie jego aktywności intelektualnej, do której przede wszystkim zalicza się publicystyka oraz twórczość literacka. Istotnym tłem interpretacyjnym pozostaje tradycja polskiej szkoły animacji, która jako formacja artystyczna o szerokim oddziaływaniu filozoficznym i politycznym narodziła się właśnie na przełomie lat 50. i 60.
The article is devoted to Marek Serafiński’s film Hunchbacks from the series 14 Tales from the Kingdom of Lailonia by Leszek Kołakowski, produced by TvSFA in Poznań in 1990s. Reflections on an animated adaptation of a philosophical fairy tale evoke revisionist context of Kołakowski’s thought from the 1950s and 1960s, the evidence of which we may find in his publications of the time, especially in the secondary stream of his intellectual activity, that is texts published in popular journals and literary works. An important element of the interpretation is the tradition of the Polish school of animation, which as an artistic formation of a broad philosophical and political impact came into existence at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s.

This study aimed to evaluate Polish school principals’ coronavirus-related health literacy (HL) level and explore the respondents’ feelings in the context of the pandemic media information overload. The survey was conducted in 8 out of 16 provinces in Poland between June 2021 and December 2021 using an online questionnaire. Research revealed that the most challenging for Polish school principals was judging the reliability of the media-based information about COVID-19. Moreover, respondents’ coronavirus-related HL was positively associated with feeling well-informed about the pandemic and less confused concerning media information about coronavirus. Enhancing school principals’ HL is recommended, as it can positively affect the entire school community through health-oriented leadership behaviour and prevent an infodemic, facilitating school management and making the right decisions.

W roku 1989 na terenach byłego ZSRR dokonały się zmiany polityczne i społeczne. Na fali odzyskiwania niepodległości w krajach anektowanych do składu Kraju Rad, uaktywniła się polska mniejszość narodowa. Zyskała szansę na odtworzenie szkół polskich istniejących przed wojną między innymi w niepodległej Łotwie. Zaczęto powoływać do życia placówki edukacyjne, w których dzieci mogły pobierać naukę w języku ich przodków. Otwarto sześć takich szkół - trzy średnie i trzy podstawowe. Z różnym powodzeniem rozwijały one swoją działalność „potykając się” o problemy, jakie stawiano im po drodze, zmieniając prawo oświatowe, ograniczając finansowanie z budżetów gminnych. Nie wszystkie szkoły poradziły sobie i po kilkunastu latach działania zostały zamknięte. Tekst przedstawia historię najnowszą jednej z nich. Pokazany został wieloletni wysiłek organizatorów placówki działającej w Jekabpils od 1994 i zamkniętej w 2015 roku. Opisana została nadzieja towarzysząca powstaniu szkoły, tworzenie klimatu i kultury szkoły. Przez wiele lat trwała walka o pozyskanie uczniów. Pokazany został wysiłek nauczycieli delegowanych do pracy z Polski, upominających się o poziom kształcenia w języku polskim, przeciwstawiających się zmianie koncepcji pracy szkoły pomyślanej jako placówka z wykładowym językiem polskim, którego status władze zmieniły na język obcy. Przedstawiona dokumentacja planów remontu, rozbudowy czy budowy od podstaw nowej placówki wytworzona w latach 2005-2010 przez zainteresowane sprawą podmioty po obydwu stronach granicy, pokazuje determinację miejscowego środowiska polskiego, poszukującego wsparcia swojej inicjatywy po obu stronach granicy. Jednak okazało się, że na szkole w Jekabpils nikomu nie zależało, poza działaczami Związku Polaków na Łotwie i polskimi nauczycielami. Dzisiaj pozostały jedynie dokumenty i wspomnienia.
In 1989, political and social changes took place in the territory of the former USSR. On the wave of regaining independence in the countries annexed to the state of the Soviets, the Polish national minority became active. It gained a chance to recreate Polish schools that existed before the war, among others, in independent Latvia. Educational institutions were established where children could learn in the language of their ancestors. Six such schools were opened – three secondary and three primary. With varying degrees of success, they developed their activities, “stumbling” over the problems that were imposed on them along the way, changing the education law and limiting the financing from municipal budgets. Not all schools managed to cope and after about a dozen years the activities were closed. The text presents the recent history of one of them. It shows the many years of efforts of the organizers of the facility operating in Jekabpils since 1994 and closed in 2015. It describes the hope accompanying the establishment of the school, creating its atmosphere and culture. For many years, there was a struggle to acquire an apprentice. It shows the efforts of teachers delegated to work from Poland, calling for the level of education in Polish, opposing the change in the concept of school work, conceived as an institution with the Polish language of instruction, reduced by the authorities to teaching it as a foreign language. The presented documentation of plans for renovation, expansion or construction of a new facility from scratch, created in 2005–2010 by interested entities on both sides of the border, shows the determination of the local Polish community seeking support for their initiative on both sides of the border. However, it turned out that no one cared about the school in Jekabpils, apart from the activists of the Union of Poles in Latvia and Polish teachers. Today only documents and memories have remained.

W artykule przedstawiono wybrane wnioski z badania dotyczącego szkolnych doświadczeń gejów i lesbijek zmieszczone w publikacji pt. Przecież jesteśmy! Homofobiczna przemoc w polskich szkołach – narracje gejów i lesbijek. Dane zgromadzono za pomocą wywiadów pogłębionych, opracowanych i przeanalizowanych z użyciem jakościowej metodologii badawczej, w tym analizy tematycznej treści. W tekście zwraca się uwagę na kulturowe źródła przemocy homofobicznej oraz przejawy jej występowania w odniesieniu do szkolnych przestrzeni, sprawców i sprawczyń, podkreślając wszechobecność oraz różnorodność form tego rodzaju przemocy. Naszkicowano również sylwetki osób doznających przemocy, wskazując, że nawet niewielkie odstępstwa od przyjętych w danej społeczności norm kobiecości czy męskości stają się bodźcem aktywującym zachowania przemocowe.
The article presents selected parts of the research on the school experiences of gays and lesbians, included in the publication entitled “We are here! Homophobic violence in Polish schools – gay and lesbian narratives”. The data was collected through in-depth interviews, developed and analyzed using qualitative research methodology with thematic content analysis. The text draws attention to the cultural sources of homophobic violence and the manifestations of its occurrence in relation to school spaces and perpetrators, highlighting pervasiveness and variety of forms of this type of violence. The authors also outline the profiles of people experiencing violence, pointing out that even slight deviations from the norms of femininity or masculinity adopted in a given community, become a stimulus that activates violent behaviour.

The socio-political and economic transformations initiated in 1989 caused a severe crisis in the Polish animated film of the 1990s. After a period of stagnation, the first decades of the new century brought a significant revival of Polish artistic animation. The author presents the works of Polish artistic animation and examines its achievements against the historical background of the “Polish school of animation”, which has always been a world-famous, unique cultural phenomenon. Aware of the fact that new generations of artists both continue this tradition, as well as engage with it polemically, the author emphasizes the role of internationally renowned film education, which is crucial to the transfer of the school’s values. At the same time, he indicates that, in recent decades, a distinctive feature of Polish animation has been its intense feminisation.

20 marca 2014 szkolnictwo wyższe oraz oświata w Polsce poniosły niepowetowaną stratę – zmarł prof. zw. dr hab. Ryszard Borowicz, wybitny naukowiec, którego obszar badań rozciągał się od socjologii po pedagogikę. Badacz ten przez całe swoje życie zawodowe poszukiwał odpowiedzi na nurtujące socjologów edukacji i pedagogów pytania i wątpliwości oraz próbował rozwiązać tzw. nierozwiązywalne kwestie społeczne. Jedną z takich kwestii okazuje się stan polskiego systemu edukacji. Liczne reformy i nieustające zmiany podstaw programowych, sprzeczność wielu regulacji prawnych – to tylko przykłady problemów, z jakimi od lat boryka się polska oświata. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi zbiór wybranych przemyśleń autora z zakresu problemów współczesnej edukacji i poświęcony jest próbie odpowiedzi na pytania na temat kondycji polskiego systemu edukacji oraz potrzeby jego reformowania, jak również kierunków tych zmian. Ta tematyka była bowiem przedmiotem wielu niedokończonych dyskusji toczonych między autorem tekstu a śp. prof. Ryszardem Borowiczem, którego pamięci ten tekst jest dedykowany.
March 20, 2014, higher education in Poland suffered irreparable loss of eminent scientist – educational researcher, moving between sociology and pedagogy – professor Ryszard Borowicz. His whole academic life, Professor Ryszard Borowicz sought answers to questions and doubts interesting both sociologists of education and pedagogues, and tried to solve the so-called. unsolvable social issues. One of those unsolved social issues proves to be the state of Polish education system. Numerous reforms, incessant changes and modifications of programs basis, the contradiction of many legal regulations are only examples of the problems that have plagued Polish education for years. This article is devoted to an attempt to answer questions about the condition of the Polish education system and the need for its reform, as well as the direction of these changes. This theme was the subject of number of unfinished debates between the author of this article and already mentioned late professor Ryszard Borowicz, to Whose memory I dedicate this text. The article is a collection of selected author’s thoughts concerning the problems of modern education.
